Fewer touches than Raya: Arteta must drop 4/10 Arsenal star after Bilbao

If Arsenal’s victory over Nottingham Forest was about sweeping joyous football and a team that reminded us of 2022/23, the 2-0 win over Athletic Club in the Champions League was more about attrition.

It was a reminder of the progress and changes Mikel Arteta has made to his team since 2022. Arsenal are more stern; they’re difficult to break down and it’s about trying to find a way to win at all costs. They did that in Bilbao on Tuesday evening.

This was not their finest performance in Europe over the last few years, far from it, but they found a way and their ability to get over the line courtesy of their impressive defence was seen again.

This was the Basque club’s first game in the Champions League for 11 years. The first time the euphoric theme song had been played inside their stadium for over a decade. It was never going to be an easy tie. It proved just that.

Ultimately, the north Londoners left it late but headed back to the English capital with a pair of substitutes to thank. This time it wasn’t about the shiny new toys, as it was against Forest. This time, it was two of the old guard who rescued Arsenal.

How Arsenal won in Bilbao

Heading into this clash, Arteta made just one change to his starting XI, which saw Declan Rice come into the team at the expense of the injured Martin Odegaard.

There was perhaps a surprise in defence too. Riccardo Calafiori, who spent a lot of last season out with injury, played his fifth game in a row, starting ahead of Myles Lewis-Skelly and new signing Piero Hincapie.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

It’s evident Arteta really values the way the Italian can drive forward and invert from left-back.

A lot of the praise come full-time was deservedly sent the way of Calafiori and his fellow defenders, not least Cristhian Mosquera, who continues to go from strength to strength in Arsenal colours.

William Saliba, who? The young Spaniard has ensured that Saliba’s injury hasn’t impacted the side at all.

While the hosts did not dominate possession, they had their spells in the game, but ultimately they came to very little. Gabriel and Mosquera were titans at the back, the former winning five of his six duels and the latter winning seven of his 13 battles.

It was perhaps up front where the Gunners struggled most on this occasion.

A few days ago, Eberechi Eze and Noni Madueke dazzled as they defeated Ange Postecoglou’s men but on this occasion, they found it more difficult.

Madueke was still a consistent threat, attempting four dribbles but unlike Forest, he struggled to create. He provided five key passes a few days ago but none on Tuesday.

On the other hand, Eze really found his work difficult. He made one key pass and didn’t have a shot. His magic abilities were limited but he will no doubt have brighter nights in Europe this season.

What that meant is that with just under 20 minutes to go, Arteta needed a rescue act. He got that courtesy of Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard.

With Madueke and Eze entering the building, it looked like their days as regular starters were numbered but they issued a reminder on Tuesday night that they are still part of this squad.

Within 36 seconds of coming on Martinelli showed he’s made for European away nights, bursting clear of the Bilbao defence before coolly slotting the ball past Unai Simon having been subbed on for Eze.

Martinelli was involved in the second goal too, acting as the supply line for Trossard who scored his first goal of the campaign with just three minutes to go.

It was a difficult night for the Gunners, one where they had to suffer, and it was made trickier by the midfield three.

Arsenal star must be dropped after Bilbao

Against Liverpool a few weeks ago, a match in which Arsenal set up tactically in a similar fashion to Tuesday evening on the continent, Arteta selected a midfield three of Martin Zubimendi, Mikel Merino and Rice.

For Zubimendi and Merino, this week’s clash was one with extra narrative. Once of Real Sociedad, they were heading back to the club’s rivals. They knew what this game and type of atmosphere would bring.

Unfortunately, they struggled to make much of an imprint on the game. Merino was perhaps the biggest culprit in that regard.

Merino’s time at Arsenal has been curious. In midfield, he’s showcased his technical ability but also his flaws. It’s actually up front where he’s shone most, notably scoring six times towards the back end of last season when operating as an emergency striker.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

He has showcased he can do it from deeper areas too, scoring a hat-trick for Spain against Turkey over the international break.

However, he had no such joy in Bilbao on Tuesday. In fact, Arteta should have picked a more creative outlet with Odegaard out injured, perhaps Ethan Nwaneri.

Fielded in the ‘Odegaard role’, the 29-year-old struggled to get on the ball much, ultimately having just 40 touches, 16 fewer than goalkeeper David Raya, not what you want from a midfielder on a big night in Europe.

Described as “clunky” by the Athletic’s Aaron Catterson-Reid, with those touches, he completed just 75% of his passes. Only one of those passes transpired into a key pass or a goalscoring opportunity.

Usually heralded as something of a duel monster, Merino struggled in this capacity too.

The Spaniard won just two of his six ground duels. He also only won three of his seven aerial battles. This wasn’t a good night for him and Arteta must consider dropping him to the bench when they take on Manchester City this weekend.

Merino and Rice as the two 8s in this team simply doesn’t work. They are fantastic players, but they look a lot better when paired with someone more creative.

Arteta must heed that warning against Man City, or else it may be another struggle for Arsenal to create. Stable and tenacious Merino may be, but his influence on this Arsenal team wanes significantly when he plays in Odegaard’s position. It must not happen again.

Man Utd struck gold signing "incredible" gem worth more than Mbeumo & Cunha

Manchester United have splashed the cash once again this summer, with the board handing manager Ruben Amorim the opportunity to make the desired changes to his first-team squad.

Such spending is no surprise to the fanbase, especially after previous manager Erik ten Hag was handed over £600m in the transfer market during his own tenure at Old Trafford.

However, there will be hope that the additions made by the 40-year-old will be more impactful, hopefully making a positive impact and subsequently catapulting the side up the Premier League table.

Manchester United manager RubenAmorimbefore the match

Antony and Rasmus Hojlund are just two players signed by the Dutchman, but both departed Old Trafford on deadline day after falling down the pecking order since Amorim’s arrival.

Their departures highlight the faith the manager has in his new additions to help provide the goods in his quest for future success during his time in England.

United’s moves to land Cunha & Mbeumo this summer

After scoring just 44 times in the Premier League in 2024/25, attention was turned to United’s frontline – with £200m being spent on new additions in such a department.

Matheus Cunha joined the Red Devils in a £62.5m deal from Wolverhampton Wanderers, offering an added threat within the attacking department after scoring 15 times last season.

Manchester United's Matheus Cunha

Whilst the Brazilian is yet to score since his big-money transfer, he has shown glimpses of his talent, creating 1.3 chances per 90 to date – but he may be set for a spell on the sideline after picking up a hamstring injury against Burnley.

He’s been joined in such a department by Bryan Mbeumo, after the Cameroonian international also cost a whopping £65m from Brentford – after netting 20 goals of his own in England’s top-flight in 2024/25.

The 26-year-old has already opened his account at Old Trafford, netting against Burnley last weekend – helping the side claim their first win of the new campaign.

The United player who’s worth more than Mbeuno & Cunha

Despite Ten Hag’s failures in the transfer market, he did make some impressive additions to the United squad – including that of centre-back Lisandro Martínez.

The Argentine joined the Red Devils in a package totalling £57m in the summer of 2022, going on to make 91 appearances for the club over the last three campaigns.

Whilst injuries have massively halted his progress at Old Trafford, he’s still produced numerous moments of magic, including his superb strike against Liverpool at Anfield last season.

The 27-year-old still remains sidelined with a knee injury, but could return in November, potentially partnering Leny Yoro at the heart of the backline once again.

The Frenchman joined United in a £52m transfer from Lille last summer, with the teenager seen as an immediate and long-term option to help bolster the club’s defensive department.

He’s since racked up 36 first-team appearances over the last 12 months, starting in all three of the Red Devils’ league outings in the 2025/26 campaign to date.

Despite his defensive role, the 19-year-old has already found the net once, scoring in the first leg of the Europa League quarter-final against Lyon last campaign – subsequently helping Amorim’s side reach another European final.

In the early stages of the new season, Yoro has already won 60% of the tackles he’s entered, whilst winning 82% of his aerial battles – offering Amorim’s side a commanding presence at the heart of his defence.

As a result of his performances of late, the youngster is now valued at £69.4m by FootballTransfers – a figure that is higher than the fees paid for Mbeumo and Cunha this window.

At just 19, Yoro has bags of time to develop further at United, potentially cementing himself in the club’s first-team for at least the next decade and maybe even beyond.

Should he build on his impressive start to life in England, it would be a sensational transfer, with the Frenchman having the chance to make himself a fan-favourite and take the side back to their former glory.

'Cristiano Ronaldo doesn't have to apologise for anything' – CR7 spared criticism after penalty miss as Portuguese GOAT remains untouchable

Cristiano Ronaldo remains untouchable in his homeland as the Portuguese GOAT, with the all-time great being told that he has nothing to apologise for after missing a penalty against the Republic of Ireland. The Al-Nassr superstar fluffed his lines from 12 yards during a 2026 World Cup qualifier, with former Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher keeping out his spot-kick before Ruben Neves snatched a dramatic stoppage-time winner.

  • Neves goal & Jota tribute after Ronaldo penalty miss

Ronaldo was let off the hook when ex-Wolves midfielder Neves – who also plies his club trade in the Middle East for Al-Hilal – struck in the 91st minute and delivered another tribute to former international team-mate Diogo Jota. Portugal remain top of qualification Group A on the back of a third successive victory en route to the 2026 finals.

It appeared at one stage as though points would be dropped against Irish opposition, with Ronaldo having to take his share of the blame for that. His penalty, in the 75th minute, was struck well enough, but he decided to go straight down the middle. Rather than ‘Panenka’ said strike and dink beyond the diving goalkeeper, Ronaldo’s effort did not get enough air on it. That allowed Kelleher to stick out a leg and volley the ball to safety.

CR7 was distraught, as he trudged off with his head in his hands, but he was given the chance to complete the full 90 minutes. Had he hit the net against Ireland, then more history would have been made. As it stands, Ronaldo is locked on 39 World Cup qualifying goals with Guatemala forward Carlos Ruiz – with one more required in order to claim another entry in the record books.

Ronaldo remains a legend to those in Portugal

Nobody in Portugal is about to accuse Ronaldo of letting his country down, with the 40-year-old frontman a European Championship winner with two UEFA Nations League titles to his name. He has registered 141 international goals through 224 appearances and continues to chase down 1,000 efforts in total over the course of his remarkable career.

Renato Veiga told reporters when asked about Ronaldo’s failure to take a golden opportunity against Ireland, with a national hero apologising to supporters afterwards as he held his hands up to the crowd: "Cristiano doesn't have to apologise for anything. For everything he's done for Portugal and Portuguese football, for what he still does, and for the great performance he put in."

  • World Cup win for Ronaldo? Portugal among favourites

As current holders of the Nations League crown, and with a talented group of players available to Roberto Martinez – which includes the likes of Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes, Joao Felix, Ruben Dias, Vitinha and Rafael Leao – Portugal are among the favourites to capture a global title in the United States, Canada and Mexico next summer.

Veiga insists that nobody is buying into that big billing just yet, saying of a potential bid to claim a historic crown in 2026: "Before that, the focus is on qualifying, then we can think further ahead. Of course, with this victory, Portugal is closer to the World Cup. We haven't qualified yet, and there's no point in dwelling on something we haven't achieved yet. We know our quality and are confident in how good we are, but we must be very humble and take it game by game."

Emulate Messi: Ronaldo desperate for global title

Ronaldo will be desperate to get his hands on the World Cup, allowing him to emulate the achievements of eternal rival Lionel Messi. Felix has previously told of CR7 gracing another finals and setting his sights on the ultimate prize: "Yes, I think so and everything indicates that he will. He dreams of winning the World Cup, we will do everything we can to give him that prize. I think it is the only one he is missing."

Portugal will be back in action on Tuesday when playing host to Hungary at Estadio Jose Alvalade in Lisbon. Ronaldo will likely figure prominently in that contest, with there no desire on his part to ever take a rest.

Here's a detailed look at Chelsea's 10 most expensive signings: 10 Joao Pedro £60m from Brighton

Chelsea’s biggest signing in 2025 was centre-forward Joao Pedro, who was signed in time to link up with the Blues during their Club World Cup campaign.

The Brazilian became an instant hit with his goals in the USA, and he is under contract at Stamford Bridge until 2033.

9 Alvaro Morata £60m from Real Madrid

The oldest arrival in this top 10 is Alvaro Morata, who joined Chelsea in a club-record £60m transfer from Real Madrid back in 2017. The striker’s move to England ultimately didn’t work out, though, with the Spaniard returning to La Liga with Atletico Madrid on loan in 2019 before making that move permanent a year later.

Morata is currently the captain of the Spanish national team and scored 24 goals in 72 games for the Blues.

8 Marc Cucurella £60m from Brighton

Chelsea won the race ahead of Manchester City to sign left-back Marc Cucurella from Brighton & Hove Albion in 2022 for just over £60m, with the Spaniard making the left-back role his own at Stamford Bridge.

A former Barcelona youngster, Cucurella impressed in his first year in England with the Seagulls under Graham Potter, and the pair would soon be reunited when the Blues brought in the latter as manager a month later.

7 Mykhailo Mudryk £62m from Shakhtar Donetsk

Mykhaylo Mudryk for Chelsea

Chelsea swooped in ahead of Arsenal to sign winger Mykhailo Mudryk from Shakhtar Donetsk in 2023 for £62m, with the Ukraine international signing a huge eight-and-a-half-year contract at Stamford Bridge.

His Chelsea deal could reach a total of £89m, but having not had much success thus far, Shakhtar look set to miss out on nearly £30m worth of bonuses.

6 Wesley Fofana £70m from Leicester City

Centre-back Wesley Fofana was brought to Stamford Bridge from Leicester City in 2022, but the Frenchman’s stay with Chelsea so far has been hampered by injury.

However, considering he signed a seven-year deal, the Blues still have plenty of time to get the best out of the Frenchman, who cost the west Londoners a handsome £70m – proving Leicester sure know how to get a decent sum for a promising centre-back.

5 Kai Havertz £71m from Bayer Leverkusen

Kai Havertz Chelsea

Versatile attacker Kai Havertz was brought to England by Chelsea in 2020, joining in a big-money £71m deal from Bayer Leverkusen.

The German went on to score the winning goal for the Blues in the 2021 Champions League final against Manchester City before being sold to rivals Arsenal in 2023, with Chelsea bringing in the majority of the fee they spent on the player.

Chelsea's most expensive sales of all time

A look at the record departures from Stamford Bridge.

ByCharlie Smith Oct 8, 2025 4 Kepa Arrizabalaga £71m from Athletic Club

Kepa Arrizabalaga is the most expensive goalkeeper in history, but he only sits 4th in Chelsea’s record signings list, showing the Blues’ spending power in the years that have followed.

Famously remembered in a Chelsea shirt for refusing to be substituted in extra time of an EFL Cup final under Maurizio Sarri, Kepa signed for the Blues back in 2018 from Athletic Club for just over £71m and was allowed to join Arsenal for just £5m in 2025.

The best EFL Cup finals of all time – ranked

Some of these finals have been true classics…

ByStephan Georgiou Feb 8, 2024 3 Romelu Lukaku £97.5m from Inter

Striker Romelu Lukaku returned to Chelsea for a second Stamford Bridge stint back in 2021, with the Blues paying Inter what was a club-record fee of £97.5m for the Belgian.

It appeared to be a masterstroke at first, with Lukaku scoring freely back in a Chelsea shirt, but over time, it has proven to be a costly mistake, with the player spending recent years on loan in Italy with Inter and Roma before finally being sold by Chelsea for the second time, this time to Napoli.

2 Enzo Fernandez £107m from Benfica

Midfielder Enzo Fernandez joined Chelsea in a £107m deal from Benfica in 2023 shortly after winning the World Cup with Argentina.

It was a British record at the time, and although the midfielder is arguably still working to pay off that price tag, he has become a vital member of the team under Enzo Maresca, wearing the captain’s armband in the absence of Reece James.

1 Moises Caicedo £115m from Brighton

Moises Caicedo

Central midfielder Moises Caicedo only made 53 appearances for Brighton & Hove Albion between 2021 and 2023, but that was enough for Chelsea to spend big on the Ecuador international.

The Blues won the race ahead of Liverpool for Caicedo, who endured a tough start to life at Stamford Bridge before eventually showing his best form. He’s under contract until 2031, so he has plenty of time to become an important Chelsea star.

Rabada serves suspension for recreational drug use

Kagiso Rabada has admitted to testing positive for recreational drug use and serving a provisional suspension, which led to his departure from IPL 2025 on April 3. At the time, Rabada’s team Gujarat Titans said he had returned home to deal with a “significant personal matter,” and did not indicate if or when he would return to India.”ESPNcricinfo understands that Rabada’s transgression took place during the SA20 in January-February this year. He represented MI Cape Town in that tournament. While the exact length of his sanction has not been confirmed, he has since traveled back to India and his return to play is imminent. Rabada has not played a match since March 29.Related

In statement issued by Rabada through the South African Cricketers’ Association (SACA), Rabada apologised for his actions and recommitted himself to the game.”As has been reported, I recently returned to South Africa from participating in the IPL for personal reasons,” Rabada said in his statement. “This was due to my returning an adverse analytical finding for the use of a recreational drug.”I am deeply sorry to all those that I have let down. I will never take the privilege of playing cricket for granted. This privilege is much larger than me. It goes beyond my personal aspirations.”I am serving a provisional suspension and I am looking forward to returning to the game I love playing.”I couldn’t have gone through this alone. I’d like to thank my agent, CSA, and Gujarat Titans for their support. I’d also like to thank SACA and my legal team for their guidance and counsel. Most importantly I’d like to thank my friends and family for their understanding and love.”Moving forward, this moment will not define me. I will keep doing what I have always done, continuously working hard and playing with passion and devotion to my craft.”SACA have declined to answer questions relating to the matter while the South African Agency for Drug-Free Sport (SAIDS) is expected to release a statement early next week explaining the situation. SAIDS is a signatory to the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), which means that any sanction SAIDS oversees would need to be ratified by WADA.In the last four years, there has only been one instance of an athlete receiving a one-month ban from SAIDS: powerlifter Matt Bekker, who was banned in April 2021 for testing positive for THC, which is found in cannabis. In November last year, New Zealand cricketer Doug Bracewell was effectively banned for a month for cocaine use – a sanction that was reduced from three months after Bracewell satisfactorily completed a treatment program. ESPNcricinfo has established that Rabada’s case is expected to be similar. There are no concerns from sources close to CSA over Rabada missing any more cricket, including the World Test Championship final against Australia in June.

Here's a detailed look at Barcelona's top 10 earners… 10 Dani Olmo €240,385 per week

On a salary of €9.38m a year is Dani Olmo, whom Barcelona won the race for from RB Leipzig in 2024.

The Catalan giants then had to move on a number of players in order to register Olmo’s €60m transfer, with the attacking midfielder previously coming through at La Masia as a teenager.

9 Ronald Araujo €240,385 per week

Ronald Araujo signed for Barcelona as a teenager back in 2018 and has progressed through the academy and into a first-team regular at the Nou Camp.

The Uruguayan signed his latest and best-ever contract in January 2025, keeping him at the club until 2031.

8 Pedri €240,385 per week

La Masia graduate Pedri, alongside teammate Gavi, are the central midfielders looking to repeat the successes of Andres Iniesta and Xavi Hernandez in years to come.

Pedri signed his most recent Barcelona contract back in 2025, which will keep him at the club until 2030.

7 Marcus Rashford €269,231 per week

Marcus Rashford became the first English player to sign for Barcelona since Gary Lineker in 1986, joining on loan from Manchester United.

Those at the Nou Camp are paying €14m to the forward in wages for the 2025/26 season.

14-year old Vaibhav Suryavanshi kicks off IPL career with first-ball six

The RR opener batted fearlessly on IPL debut to scored34 off 20 balls

Boucher: Suryavanshi must be ‘special’ to be selected at 14

At 14 years and 23 days, Vaibhav Suryavanshi became the IPL’s youngest debutant when he was brought in as an Impact Player in Rajasthan Royals’ (RR) chase of 181 against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in Jaipur on Saturday. He began his IPL career with a six off his first delivery, bowled by Shardul Thakur.Suryavanshi, who hails from Samastipur, a city about 100 kilometres north east of Patna, made his first-class debut at the age of 13 in January last year, and was picked for INR 1.1 crore at last November’s mega IPL auction. He had attracted the attention of IPL scouts when he made a 58-ball century for India in a youth “Test” against Australia in September last year. Having sat on the RR bench for the first half of IPL 2025, he got his opportunity because of an injury to Sanju Samson.”Playing IPL at 14 is unimaginable,” Ambati Rayudu said on ESPNcricinfo TimeOut before the chase once it became clear that Suryavanshi would be getting a go. “He must be a special cricketer,” Mark Boucher said.Related

IPL's youngest debutants: Vaibhav Suryavanshi makes history

“Everybody has been anticipating this day this year right from the auction when he was picked,” Rayudu added. “Everybody was quite curious to know who this kid was. The only other guy that the whole of India saw at 16 was Sachin Tendulkar and from then on we know what he has achieved. So everybody is expecting big things from Suryavanshi as well.”Opening the batting with Yashasvi Jaiswal, Suryavanshi did not hold back. He launched the first ball he faced – a length delivery from India international Thakur – by making room and lofting on the up over the extra-cover boundary. His fearlessness and intent to keep on attacking became evident when he cleared his front leg and swung at his third ball, hitting another India international, Avesh Khan, down the ground for six. He earned a reprieve off his fifth delivery, when Prince Yadav put down a high catch running back from midwicket. As LSG brought in spinner Digvesh Rathi in the fourth over after RR had raced to 39 for no loss, Suryavanshi focused on defence. There was a clear plan to hit anything pitched short or full, like the time he climbed into Rathi when he dropped short, or when he launched legspinner Ravi Bishnoi straight down the ground.Suryavanshi scored 34 off 20 – 26 in boundaries – on IPL debut before Aiden Markram had him stumped when he got one to rip off the surface to beat him in flight. Suryavanshi had overbalanced and lifted is back foot, giving Rishabh Pant the chance to complete the stumping and break the 85-run opening stand that came off 8.4 overs. At that stage, RR were well placed for victory, but a dramatic turn of events in the last three overs sent them crashing to their fourth consecutive defeat.

Zinedine Zidane urged to take over at Juventus as legendary AC Milan boss hails Frenchman for creating 'a machine of beauty' at Real Madrid

AC Milan legend Arrigo Sacchi has publicly urged Zinedine Zidane to take over as Juventus head coach. Sacchi hailed Zidane for creating a "machine of beauty" at Real Madrid, emphasising the Frenchman’s ability to combine attacking football with a winning mentality. With Juventus currently undergoing a major sporting renewal, Sacchi believes Zidane's tactical balance and deep connection to the club make the reunion a perfect fit.

Zidane and Juventus: A reunion that makes sense

Sacchi, the revered former AC Milan and Italy coach known for revolutionising modern football with his innovative tactics, has expressed his desire to see Zidane return to his old club Juventus, this time as head coach. Despite Zidane wanting to manage Les Blues in the future, the former Italian coach remains optimistic for a reunion.

For Sacchi, the idea isn’t rooted in nostalgia but in footballing logic. Zidane’s connection with Juventus runs deep: five years in Turin as a player, two Serie A titles, and the foundation of his world-class career under Marcello Lippi. Now, with Juve entering a new phase under general manager Damien Comolli and in need of both identity and inspiration, Sacchi suggests the Frenchman’s profile aligns perfectly with what the club seeks.

Sacchi's admiration for Zidane was clear while he explained how he is a good fit for the managerial position at Juve.

"His Real Madrid played an attacking game, showed courage, kept possession of the ball most of the time, dominated the opponent through a dense network of passes and the fans admired him. I ask myself: why isn't a coach who created such a machine of beauty working?," Sacchi said in a column for .

The former Milan coach further added: "I confess I have hope. He was a great Juventus player, he became a champion in the black and white jersey, he had a maestro like Marcello Lippi as his coaching mentor, so why not imagine him on the Juventus bench? Someone like him, someone who always put attacking football first, someone who believes in team play and talent at the service of the team. Our championship could only benefit from his presence."

How Zidane redefined success at Madrid

Zidane’s coaching career remains one of the most remarkable in modern football. After a brief spell with Real Madrid Castilla, he was appointed first-team coach in January 2016. Within months, he delivered the Champions League title, becoming only the second man in Los Blanco’s history to win it both as a player and a coach.

What followed was an unprecedented period of dominance – three consecutive Champions League titles (2016, 2017, 2018), two La Liga triumphs, two UEFA Super Cups, two Club World Cups and two Supercopa de Espana crowns. His record stands as one of the most decorated managerial runs in modern football: 11 trophies in just five seasons, including a historic 35-match unbeaten run.

Since leaving Madrid in 2021, Zdane has reportedly turned down multiple managerial offers, including from Paris Saint-Germain and several Premier League clubs.

AFPWhere will Zidane end up?

Zidane admitted recently that he does not know why he has not yet stepped into the Juventus hot seat as he prepares to make his return to management. It is not yet known if a Serie A return is on the cards, however, with many reports suggesting he will replace Didier Deschamps as France coach after the World Cup.

Kyle Abbott maintains Somerset stranglehold to give Hampshire first-day honours

James Rew’s rain-affected first day as county captain ends with team six-down for 94

ECB Reporters Network supported by Rothesay18-Apr-2025Kyle Abbott continued his impressive career record against Somerset as Hampshire made the most of little play on day one of their Rothesay County Championship fixture.Abbott added two wickets to take his tally to 71 scalps versus Somerset, with 40 of them coming at an average of 12 at Utilita Bowl.Fellow fast bowlers James Fuller and Brad Wheal also picked up a pair of wickets as Somerset collapsed to 94 for six at lunch – with three wickets falling in 11 balls just before the interval. But the visitors were spared any more damage as rain prevented any play taking place after lunch.Lewis Gregory’s abdominal injury meant that James Rew captained his county for the first time in the Championship – having previously led the Second XI and England Under-19. In doing so, he became the county’s youngest ever skipper, at the age of 21 years and 97 days. His first act was to call incorrectly at the toss, allowing Ben Brown to choose to bowl under threatening grey skies. The wait for the first wicket only lasted 34 balls, as Sean Dickson was late to deal with a Wheal in-ducker and was pinned in front.Archie Vaughan and Tom Lammonby stabilised and attempted to build a foundation but having eased to a 55-run stand both fell within 13 deliveries to Fuller.Fuller had been left out of the opening two rounds of the season in favour of former Somerset tearaway Sonny Baker. But Baker, who is on an ECB Development Contract, was rested, leaving the door open for Fuller.Having been hit for two boundaries in his opening over, he tightened up before rolling his fingers down one to find some away movement and the edge of Vaughan’s bat.To dismiss Lammonby, Fuller pitched it further up and angled it across the left-hander. He found the edge through to Brown. The morning looked like it would end fairly even at 93 for three around 10 minutes until lunch, but Abbott returned to make it clear who the session belonged to with Wheal.Tom Banton couldn’t have been more unlucky with his wicket. The middle-order batter whipped a half-volley with gusto but was sensationally caught by Nick Gubbins. And then five balls later, Rew tentatively pushed behind. Tom Abell added one run before Kasey Aldridge was beaten for pace and had his off stump clattered by Wheal. 11 balls had seen one run and three wickets.Rain at lunch meant not further action was possible, with an early finish confirmed just before 4.30pm.
