Better signing than Akanji: Spurs make late approach for "incredible" star

Throughout the vast majority of the summer transfer window, Tottenham Hotspur have focused the majority of their attention on new additions within the forward line.

Mohammed Kudus has been the biggest addition in such a department, costing a whopping £55m from Premier League rivals West Ham United back in July.

However, he looks set to be joined by Xavi Simons, after the Lilywhites agreed a €60m (£52m) transfer fee with RB Leipzig for the Dutchman’s signature.

The player has travelled to North London to undergo his medical with Thomas Frank’s men, looking set to complete his own transfer before Monday’s transfer deadline.

Despite the pending big-money addition, other areas are now being targeted for reinforcements, with the new boss evidently wanting further depth in the defensive third.

Spurs’ hunt for added defensive reinforcements

Over the last few hours, journalist Fabrizio Romano confirmed that Spurs have explored a deal to sign Manchester City defender Manuel Akanji before the window slams shut.

The Swiss international is said to be free to leave Pep Guardiola’s side before Monday night, leading to a £15m transfer fee being mooted for the 30-year-old’s signature.

However, attention is also being directed the way of Akanji’s teammate Nathan Ake, that’s according to GIVEMESPORT’s latest update on the Lilywhites’ transfer activity.

They claim that Frank’s side have held talks with the Citizens over a move for the 30-year-old, who’s spent the last five years under Guardiola’s guidance at the Etihad.

The report also states that the player himself held face-to-face talks with Spurs representatives last week, after the impressive 2-0 victory in Manchester last weekend.

Why Spurs’ latest target would be a better signing than Akanji

The rumours over potential deals to land new defensive reinforcements have certainly come out of the blue – leading to an exciting final few days of the window for the Spurs faithful.

Tottenham Hotspur managerThomasFrankcelebrates after the match

Akanji has been a key member of the City squad over the last couple of seasons, registering 85 appearances in the top-flight – subsequently winning two titles in the last three years.

However, like the Lilywhites, the Citizens have undergone somewhat of an overhaul during the summer to help Guardiola mount a charge for top spot after missing out to Liverpool in 2024/25.

It appears as though Akanji could be sold, whether that be to Spurs or Galatasaray, but Frank’s men would be much better off pursuing a move for his teammate, Ake.

Given his previous spells at Chelsea and Watford, he’s a more established Premier League defender, offering needed versatility that can see him operate at the centre or left side of the backline.

Manchester City's Nathan Ake

When comparing the pair’s respective stats from the recent campaign, the Dutchman has managed to massively outperform Akanji, undoubtedly offering more of a presence should he move to North London.

Ake, who’s been labelled “incredible” by current boss Guardiola, completed more of the passes he attempted, offering Frank’s side an added ball-playing presence at the back.

Out of possession, the Dutchman has also dominated Akanji, winning more of the tackles he entered, whilst also making more blocks – handing the side the added defensive quality to help build on their impressive start in 2025/26.

He has also thrived in the air, winning more of the aerial battles he entered, an asset that could make him a threat at both ends of the pitch in North London.

It’s unclear how much a deal for Ake would set the Lilywhites hierarchy back this summer, but his experience in England’s top-flight could prove to be a valuable asset to Frank’s side.

It also remains to be seen if the player himself is keen on a move to join the Lilywhites, but any move before Monday’s deadline would be a superb signing and one that would hand the side added quality in the defensive department.

'Yes absolutely' – Harry Kane responds to growing Premier League transfer speculation and is asked about his commitment to Bayern Munich amid Tottenham and Man Utd links

Harry Kane has addressed speculation he may return to the Premier League next season amid links with former club Tottenham. The England captain is said to have a release clause worth just under £57 million that kicks in next summer, provided he expresses a desire to leave before the end of January 2026. But following a brace for Bayern Munich, the striker has set the record straight on his future.

Tottenham keen on Kane reunion

The England captain swapped Tottenham for Bayern in 2023, and since then, he has scored a remarkable 100 goals in just 104 games – a club and top five European leagues record. Speculation has mounted that he could return to the north London team in 2026, something current Spurs boss Thomas Frank has openly welcomed.

Earlier this week, the former Brentford boss said: "I think there's a lot of Tottenham fans, including myself, who would like to see Kane back. He's a top player. Personally, I don't think he will do it right now, if I'm honest, he'll probably stay in Bayern and continue performing well. He was top scorer last year and won the championship, he's doing fantastic now. I don't know what he's thinking. Myself, I'm a traveller, I like to travel, I like to explore things as well. He's been here for many years so why not enjoy the time at Bayern a little bit more. But he's welcome. If he wants to join us, he's more than welcome."

AdvertisementGetty ImagesBayern Munich not confident on keeping Kane

Soon after Frank's comments, Bayern sporting director Max Eberl did not strike a particularly confident figure when asked if the German giants would be able to keep their star striker. That is despite him having two years left on his contract.

"He's old enough to make his own decisions. Whether there is a clause or no clause, it's down to him. If he says, 'I want to make a decision', then he'll make it, as he showed at Tottenham," he said. "But our wish is, of course, to be very, very successful with Harry this season and in the future."

Kane responds to transfer speculation

Kane, who has also been linked with Barcelona and Manchester United, was asked about his future following Bayern's 4-0 win over Werder Bremen in the Bundesliga on Friday night. And going by his comments, there is nowhere else he'd rather be.

Asked whether he was thinking about returning to England, he told reporters after the victory, "No, not at the moment. I'm really happy here. I have two years left on my contract. I'm enjoying every moment. [Returning to England] is not in my thought process. I'm enjoying it with the team, with the coach, and hopefully we continue to be successful."

When pressed on if Bayern is the best place for him to win trophies, he replied, "Yes, absolutely."

Amid all this talk of a Bayern exit and release clauses, Bavarian legend Lothar Matthaus insists the striker is "in very good hands" in Munich.

He told and this week "Exit clause or not. It's not a mandatory clause. He can stay at Bayern. Kane is in very good hands in Munich. He feels very comfortable there. He has been Germany's top scorer twice and is on the verge of his third top scorer award. He's winning titles with Bayern, something he didn't do with Tottenham. I don't think he can feel more comfortable anywhere else than at FC Bayern."

'I just felt so emotional' – Vancouver Whitecaps' Sebastian Berhalter opens up on USMNT debut

Vancouver Whitecaps midfielder Sebastian Berhalter reflected on his first USMNT appearance earlier this summer, recalling the emotions of stepping onto the field in June against Turkey. The 23-year-old described his debut as “overwhelmingly emotional” and voiced his determination to seize more chances with the national team.

    A lifelong soccer journey

The Vancouver midfielder discussed the indescribable feeling and physical reaction he experienced when stepping onto the field at Pratt & Whitney Stadium in Hartford for his international debut

“I think it’s something I can’t even describe,” Berhalter told podcast. “Like it was goosebumps, it was like, I remember the first game in Hartford, Connecticut. I’m on the bus and I’m seeing like, everyone’s like tailgating right outside the stadium, and like kids are just running alongside the bus…

"I just felt so emotional and knowing that I was that kid chasing the bus, like I couldn’t control [my emotions] like I looked at Brian [White] and he’s [like] ‘Dude, are you crying?’ I was like, ‘I don’t know, I think so. ’ I just had like tears running down my face, I was like, 'wow.'"

Berhalter expressed wanting to return to the national team environment, indicating that his debut had only intensified his desire for further international opportunities.

“I felt so fortunate and so proud that I got to represent my country, and just being there, obviously, I want to be back,” Berhalter admitted. “But being there was incredible. So again, I think it’s a feeling that you can’t really describe, and it’s something that you just want more of…And you want to help your country and make the people proud.”

'Fun group to be a part of'

The 24-year-old midfielder has enjoyed a good season with his club side, the Vancouver Whitecaps, with eight assists and two goals. They currently sit second on the Western Conference table, two points behind leaders San Diego FC, but do have two games in hand. Berhalter believes team chemistry has been criticial to that success.

“It’s a good group,” Berhalter said. “We always have guys stepping up, and when people go down, we have the next guy always there. And sometimes you don’t get that because guys aren’t playing and are a little grumpy, but it's really been every guy’s wanted to play their role and done great. It’s guys that have been together for three or four years, so we know each other really well.

“And then you know, different pieces have kind of come in here and there, so yeah, it’s a fun locker room. Fun group to be a part of, and we want to win a trophy.”

Nottingham Forest win race to sign another South American star with Victor

With a deal agreed to sign goalkeeper John Victor, Nottingham Forest are now reportedly leading the race to sign another South American star for Nuno Espirito Santo.

Nottingham Forest agree Victor deal

Espirito Santo requested a goalkeeper and it looks as though he’s set to get one in the form of Victor this week. According to Fabrizio Romano, Nottingham Forest have agreed a deal to sign the Brazilian from Botafogo, who is set to get the Premier League move that he’s been after since West Ham United ditched their attempts to secure his signature.

Espirito Santo also requested full-back cover and has also seen that demand met by those at the City Ground, who have welcomed Nicolo Savona from Juventus.

Speaking for the first time since becoming the latest to arrive in the Midlands, the defender said: “I am very excited to be here. It is a new experience for me as a person and a player. It is such a historic club, and the move is a dream come true. I can’t wait to play in front of the fans at the City Ground, and I will give my all for the shirt.”

Medical booked: Nottingham Forest agree deal to sign "phenomenal" Brazilian

The Midlands club are closing in on another arrival.

ByTom Cunningham Aug 30, 2025

Whether Victor and Savona are enough to satisfy Espirito Santo will be the big question. Talks between the Forest boss and Marinakis are reportedly scheduled this weekend in what should give those at the City Ground a strong indication of where Espirito Santo’s immediate future lies.

With the deadline fast-approaching, meanwhile, reports suggest that the Tricky Trees are targeting yet another South American star.

Nottingham Forest leading Cuiabano race

According to reports in Brazil, as relayed by Sport Witness, Nottingham Forest are not leading the race to sign Cuiabano from Botafogo. Forest have, of course, already welcomed Igor Jesus and Jair Cunha from the Brazilian club, whilst an agreement has also been reached for Victor. Now, they could sensationally sign a fourth player from the club.

Full of praise for all three potential Forest stars, analyst Ben Mattinson described Cuiabano as “powerful” and “pacy” when links first emerged that the Tricky Trees had him in their sights. Now, in a late move, they could finally get their man.

Cuiabano in action for Botafogo.

Like Savona, the Brazilian would also satisfy Espirito Santo’s demand for cover at full-back just as the window is coming to a close. At just 22 years old, there’s still plenty of room for improvement in the Midlands too, and European football should ensure that he receives the game time needed to enjoy that improvement.

Tottenham now make direct contact to sign "fantastic" £26m English defender

Tottenham Hotspur have now directly contacted a “fantastic” defender’s club, in order to assess the possibility of a potential deal, according to a report.

Spurs looking to bolster full-back options despite Spence renewal

Tottenham are relatively well-stocked in the full-back department, given that Thomas Frank has Destiny Udogie at his disposal at left-back and Pedro Porro on the opposite flank, while Djed Spence is capable of playing on either side.

Despite a rocky start to his career at Spurs, Spence has now done enough to earn a new long-term contract, and the full-back has admitted he is delighted to extend his stay in north London.

That said, given that Spence has predominantly featured on the left in recent times, Frank may want to bring in another full-back to provide competition for Porro on the right, and Manchester City’s Rico Lewis was recently identified as a potential option.

Last week, intermediaries made contact with the Lilywhites over a potential deal, and Frank’s side have now stepped up their interest, having made direct contact with Man City.

That is according to a report from Caught Offside, which states Tottenham have now submitted an enquiry to City about Lewis, but there could be fierce competition for the full-back’s signature, with a number of rival Premier League clubs also keen.

Indeed, Chelsea, Newcastle United, Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest have all made approaches for the 20-year-old, with the Tricky Trees even submitting an offer worth €30m (£26m), which was knocked back by the Blues.

That said, it remains to be seen whether a deal will be possible, with Pep Guardiola keen to keep hold of the youngster, while also recently saying: “I think he’s going to stay, I think. He told me that. But, I said, maybe tomorrow, after tomorrow, it’ll change.”

"Fantastic" Lewis could challenge for Porro's starting spot

Once lauded as “fantastic” by Guardiola, the English starlet has managed to repay his manager’s faith in him by establishing himself as an important player for City, making 28 appearances in the Premier League in the 2024-25 campaign.

During that time, the Bury-born defender has also showcased his versatility, featuring at left-back and even in central midfield, although right-back is the five-time England international’s favoured position.

As such, Lewis would most likely be brought in as a direct competitor to Porro, and he could have the potential to usurp the Spaniard on a long-term basis, considering Pep has stated the City ace is “one of the best” players he has trained.

That said, it could be difficult for the full-back to displace the 25-year-old in the Tottenham starting XI, given that Porro has outperformed him in both an attacking and defensive sense over the past year.

Emery's new Watkins: Aston Villa exploring move to sign £80m striker

It has been a curious summer for Aston Villa so far. Unai Emery’s side have not brought in many first-team players aside from Evann Guessand.

The Ivorian striker joined the club from French side Nice for a fee of £30m, but forgetting deal, the Villans have been quiet as far as marquee additions are concerned.

There have been departures, with Jacob Ramsey moving to Newcastle United and Leon Bailey switching to Roma.

Next to leave could be star striker Ollie Watkins. The England international is said to be a key target for the Magpies, who Villa faced last weekend.

Well, whatever the future is of the former Brentford star, it seems as though Villa will look to sign another striker of their own.

Aston Villa's latest striker target

It will be interesting to see if the Villans can keep hold of Watkins this summer. The forward has been linked with a move away for several weeks, and with Newcastle sniffing around, another departure could be on the cards.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Regardless of his future, a report from Sky Sports has revealed that Villa have ‘explored the conditions of a deal’ to sign Nicolas Jackson from Chelsea.

The Senegalese attacker informed the Blues that ‘he wants to consider his options during the transfer window’, and Villa could now pounce.

At this stage, it is unclear if this deal would be a loan or a permanent move, but with Chelsea still targeting more summer transfers, they may need to sell Jackson to raise funds.

That could mean Villa have to pay his £80m price tag, a fee that was reported last month.

Why Jackson would be a good signing

There is a case to be made that Jackson is one of the Premier League’s most polarising players. Yet, people like football scout Antonio Mango have highly praised him in the past, describing him as an “elite” forward.

Indeed, his numbers from his time as a Chelsea player show great promise. The former Villarreal striker has played 81 games for the West Londoners, scoring 30 times and assisting a further 12.

He also has a knack for scoring in big games, which would surely pique Villa’s interest. The forward has bagged against Liverpool, Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur and, of course, in the 2025 Conference League final. That header against Real Betis showed some of the “elite” centre-forward play that Mango referenced.

Of course, stepping into Watkins’ shoes at Villa Park would not be an easy thing for the Chelsea striker.

With 75 goals to his name in the Premier League, no Villa player has ever bagged more, according to Transfermarkt.

The five full seasons he has spent at Villa have been impressive for the England international. He’s hit double-figure goals in the Premier League every season, with the most he has scored in one season being 2023/24, where he bagged 19 times in the top flight.

The underlying numbers from last season suggest Jackson could be Emery’s new Watkins. The pair are said to be statistically similar in 2024/25, via FBref, with the Chelsea star averaging 0.61 goals and assists and 1.13 key passes per 90 minutes, and Watkins notching up 0.83 goals and assists and 0.83 key passes each game.

Aside from the underlying numbers, the two players both share a key attribute: their ability to run in behind.

This is something Watkins himself described as his “bread and butter” after his Euro 2024 semi-final winner against the Netherlands. Sky Sports analyst Nick Wright said one of Jackson’s key strengths is that he can “stretch defences” and make runs beyond the defence.

So, there is certainly evidence to suggest that this is a deal that works for Villa. Emery has, of course, coached Jackson before at Villarreal and knows the exact profile he would like for his side, which Jackson seems to fill. £80m is a big investment, but it could be a wise move for the Villans.

Tottenham looking to bolster attacking options despite Simons capture

Tottenham managed to get a deal for Xavi Simons over the line in the final stages of the summer transfer window, with Thomas Frank eager to bring in a new playmaker, given that James Maddison has been ruled out with an ACL injury.

However, Bundesliga commentator Kevin Hatchard has since suggested there are some doubts over the signing of Simons, given that he was not always consistent enough in an RB Leipzig shirt due to concerns about his attitude.

Tottenham confirm takeover "interest" after Levy exit, several parties keen

There have been suggestions that ENIC could look to sell Tottenham Hotspur…

ByDominic Lund Sep 8, 2025

It remains to be seen whether the Dutchman can adapt to life in the Premier League, but it appears as though ENIC are pressing ahead with a move for a different attacker regardless.

According to a report from The Boy Hotspur, Tottenham are now plotting a £60m opening bid for Aston Villa star Morgan Rogers, who is capable of playing on both wings and through the middle.

Spurs are said to be implementing a more aggressive transfer strategy following the departure of Levy, and they are now planning to test Villa’s resolve, although Unai Emery’s side are probably not inclined to accept £60m, given that they value Rogers at £100m.

The English attacker could now be open to a move to north London, with Frank’s side taking more concrete action towards securing his signature than Chelsea, who have also been named as potential suitors.

"Sensational" Rogers could kickstart new era at Tottenham

While ENIC have made it clear they have no plans to sell, Levy’s departure marks the start of a new era for Tottenham, who are now expected to be more willing to spend big in the transfer market.

As such, Spurs may be able to compete for Rogers’ signature, and there is every indication he could be a fantastic acquisition, having once again performed very well for Villa last season, picking up 19 goal contributions in 37 Premier League games.

Journalist Eduardo Hagn lauded the England international as “sensational” back in April, and he also proved himself in the Champions League, picking up four goals and three assists in 12 outings.

Rogers is clearly ready to take the next big step in his career, and with Tottenham planning to be more ambitious following Levy’s exit, a move to N17 could be ideal.
