Their new Trent: FSG’s key target flying to sign for Liverpool on Thursday

Liverpool’s Premier League opener against Bournemouth looms large, and for a club that typically shows plenty of restraint in the transfer market, it’s curious to see so many fresh faces.

And there are more yet to come.

After winning the Premier League with relative ease last season, Arne Slot has strengthened his attack with fast-rising striker Hugo Ekitike and a new playmaker in Florian Wirtz, who is considered one of the most exciting talents in world football.

Trent Alexander-Arnold has left for Real Madrid, the 31-year-old Andy Robertson has lost a yard and Kostas Tsimikas is edging toward an Anfield exit, so adding Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong to the defensive flanks has perhaps reinforced the widths for years to come.

Richard Hughes and Arne Slot

Led by Richard Hughes, this summer’s approach feels very different, but it’s unlikely to be the new normal. Undergoing a period of transformation, the Merseysiders are laying the foundations for a new era, and there are still several stunning deals which may be completed.

Liverpool planning for more signings

The interminable pursuit of Newcastle United’s Alexander Isak continues. Liverpool desperately want the striker; the Magpies desperately don’t want him to leave. Isak, for what it’s worth, is perhaps the most desperate of them all, so intent on joining Slot’s squad this summer.

It all hinges on Newcastle signing replacements, which will need to be found in the aggregate, rather than just one new goalscorer.

Liverpool have already seen an initial £110m offer rejected by Eddie Howe’s side, but with the Sweden international refusing to reintegrate into the Tyneside squad, it’s clear that Liverpool stand more than a swinging chance of getting it done before the end of the month.

Elsewhere, talks continue for Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi, who would be the perfect man to complete Virgil van Dijk’s backline.

However, there are plenty of variables at play with that one, with conflicting reports leaving the jury out.

Though Liverpool want the England defender, the urgency has been tempered somewhat by the completion of another deal for a rising talent destined for the top.

Key target travelling to Merseyside

As confirmed by Sky Sports, Liverpool have agreed a deal with Serie A side Parma for the transfer of centre-back Giovanni Leoni, who is slated to arrive for an initial £26m fee.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

And Fabrizio Romano has since informed the masses that the 18-year-old is on his way to Merseyside for a medical, with the player and his agent set to be in Liverpool today.

Despite competition from the Premier League and various Italian clubs, Liverpool have succeeded in winning the battle for the sought-after defender, who has made the brave decision to leave his homeland while still in the fledgling stage of his career.

Why Liverpool are signing Giovanni Leoni

Such a prodigious defensive talent eases the woes from the failed bid to sign Dean Huijsen from Bournemouth in May, the 20-year-old instead signing for Real Madrid.

It also provides Slot with his own version of Alexander-Arnold, who also emerged onto the scene as a youngster, so clearly cut from expensive cloth when Jurgen Klopp watched him curl a free-kick over the wall and into the back of Hoffenheim’s net in 2017, thus starting a remarkable journey to the apex of the game.

Though Trent’s decision to leave Liverpool for Los Blancos at the end of his contract last season left a bitter taste in fans’ mouths, there’s no denying the 25-year-old is one of the greatest Redmen in modern history, having played 354 matches for his boyhood club, scoring 23 goals, providing 94 assists and winning the whole gamut.

In any case, he will be missed, for his playmaking abilities stretch beyond what is expected or even conceivable for defenders to have within their locker.

Liverpool’s staggering summer spending has eased his departure, that and winning last year’s Premier League title, but in Leoni, Slot could land his answer to the all-inspiring right-back, landing a talented defender with hype around his name at such an early stage.

Leoni, despite only breaking into Parma’s first team last season, has earned a reputation for his strong protective ability and his expansive technical game.

Talent scout Jacek Kulig has already declared him to be “one of the most complete teenage centre-backs in Europe”, and having started 14 Serie A games last season, all of which came from November and beyond, he’s clearly established himself as a reliable option in Italy.

Indeed, he completed 89% of his passes and won 63% of his aerial battles in the Italian top-flight last year, emphasising a precocious understanding and reading of the game.

Moreover, the 6 foot 5 sensation has an aggressiveness and progressiveness to his game, which allows him to step beyond what is required for someone of his position.

In this way, he could actually serve as the symbolic successor to Alexander-Arnold’s position at Liverpool, joining the manager’s Slot in its infancy. If a bit more substance is needed, Leoni also played three matches as a makeshift right-back last season, further underlining his athleticism and capacity to succeed.

While Liverpool still hope to sign Guehi before the end of the month, it’s clear that Leoni has what it takes to become a superstar of a defender, and he might just reach the heights and the success on Merseyside to establish himself as Slot’s answer to Alexander-Arnold.

Dream Baleba alternative: Amorim leading Man Utd chase to sign £30m CM

Manchester United’s season begins this weekend, with Ruben Amorim’s side welcoming Arsenal to Old Trafford for a fiery curtain-raising clash in the Premier League.

So much hinges on this campaign for United, who have emerged from a disastrous year of struggle: slumping, losing Erik ten Hag, appointing Amorim, plummeting further, finishing 15th, losing the Europa League final.

Brighton & Hove Albion's CarlosBalebacelebrates scoring their first goal with Joao Pedro and Matt O'Riley

But INEOS and Jason Wilcox have refashioned the frontline and remain intent on bolstering further. Gianluigi Donnarumma has been targeted, though is also in Manchester City’s sights, but it’s an all-action midfield player who Amorim feels would have the most significant impact on his side.

Man United's chase for new midfielder

Man United’s interest in Carlos Baleba has been well-documented across the past few weeks, with the Brighton & Hove Albion star viewed as the perfect long-term option to complete Amorim’s midfield.

However, Baleba remains in first-team training with the Seagulls, who are going to resist with full force the Man United advances.

With much uncertainty around the 21-year-old’s signature, a different Premier League star has been earmarked too.

Indeed, according to talkSPORT’s Alex Crook, Amorim is a big admirer of Southampton talent Mateus Fernandes, who was one of the relegated side’s standout players last season.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

West Ham United are felt to have the lead in the battle, having opened talks with the south coast club, but United could surely sway the odds in their favour, should they raise their interest.

Southampton will demand in excess of £30m.

What Mateus Fernandes would bring to Man United

The 21-year-old Fernandes shone despite Saints’ woes last year, and he’s been described as having the tools to become the “ultimate Premier League midfielder” by former pro Jo Tessem.

Fulham's Ryan Sessegnon in action with Southampton'sMateusFernandes

Having joined Southampton from Sporting Lisbon for a smart £15m fee last summer, he has featured 44 times in total, starring across his outfit’s opening two matches of the current campaign, this time in England’s second tier.

Given that he is available for a portion of the price required for Baleba’s signature, Fernandes might be the perfect fallback, perhaps even a more prudent and economical signing – one which might still bloom ripe results for Amorim’s resurgence-seeking side.

We are not, of course, advocating Fernandes as being a midfielder of superiority; Baleba has been valued in excess of £100m after all. However, there’s an exciting player in this Portuguese prospect, one who shares some of the Cameroonian’s tactical strengths and has plenty of room for development.

There’s a case to be made that Fernandes has a bit more completeness about his game. Given the trammels that were imposed on his skill set by a lifeless Southampton side, constantly weighted down by their opponents, he did a rather good job, protecting his backline as best he could while pushing play forward too.

With impressive strength and precision in front of goal, the rising talent truly might have the skill set to become the “perfect midfielder”, as has been noted by analyst Ben Mattinson.

Though Baleba is the talk of the town and is perhaps further down the line in his development than Fernandes, the latter man weathered a harsh storm at St. Mary’s Stadium last year and still managed to make a good impression.

His steely presence and underrated technical game suggest he could prove a shrewd signing indeed.

Derby County agree £3m deal to sign "real leader" who Eustace knows well

Derby County have met the £3 million asking price to sign a “real leader” who manager John Eustace has worked with before, according to a recent report.

Derby in transfer race with Wrexham to sign 32 y/o Championship defender

There’s serious competition for his signature…

ByBrett Worthington Jul 16, 2025

The Championship side are yet to really utilise the loan market, but that could be about to change, as the Telegraph’s John Percy reports that Derby are close to signing Owen Beck on loan from Liverpool.

The Wales under-21 international is expected to undergo his medical at Derby later this week and then become their sixth signing of the summer.

The 22-year-old has already enjoyed a few loan spells in the EFL, as he joined Bolton Wanderers for the 2022/23 campaign and then Eustace’s Blackburn Rovers team for the entirety of last season.

Beck will be the third addition this summer who has worked with Eustace before moving to Derby, and the Rams could soon make it four, as they eye another defensive signing.

Derby meet £3m asking price to sign Callum Brittain

According to EFL Analysis’ Graeme Bailey, Derby have met Blackburn’s asking price to sign defender Callum Brittain.

Callum Brittain.

The Lancashire side had placed a £3 million price tag on the player’s head, and while the Rams have agreed a deal in that ballpark, Middlesbrough are expected to make a new offer and match that after their initial bid was turned down. It will then presumably be up to the player to choose his next destination.

The 27-year-old has been at Ewood Park since 2022, when he joined the club from Barnsley. Brittain has been a regular in the Blackburn side since his move, playing 104 games in the Championship across three campaigns. Last season was a productive one for the versatile full-back, as he scored two goals and recorded five assists in 33 league games.

Brittain was an important figure in Eustace’s former side, and the now Derby boss even reserved special praise for the defender, labelling him “one of the best full-backs in the league” and a “real leader” on and off the pitch.

Brittain’s potential arrival at Pride Park would see him compete alongside Ryan Nyambe and Kane Wilson for that right-back spot, but given his versatility, he can also cover at left-back, right midfield and even central midfield if needed.

Big worry for Man City! Omar Marmoush spotted on crutches with leg in brace after suffering knee injury on international duty ahead of Manchester derby

Manchester City have been dealt a huge blow just days before the Manchester derby after Omar Marmoush was spotted in a leg brace and on crutches following a knee injury sustained on international duty. The 25-year-old forward, a January signing who has quickly become a favourite under Pep Guardiola, suffered the problem in Egypt’s World Cup qualifier against Burkina Faso on Tuesday.

Marmoush hobbled off and was later seen wearing his national team hoodie with his right leg strapped, sparking fears he could face a lengthy spell on the sidelines. The Egyptian FA released a statement confirming that he has sustained a knee ligament bruising at a minimum during the eighth round of qualifiers.

WHAT EGYPT FA & MAN CITY SAID

The Egyptian FA statement said: "Dr Mohamed Abou El-Ela, the doctor of Egypt’s national football team, confirmed that Omar Marmoush sustained a knee ligament bruise during today’s match against Burkina Faso in the eighth round of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. The player will undergo scans upon his arrival in Cairo on Wednesday morning."

Later on Wednesday, City issued their own update: "Manchester City FC can confirm that Omar Marmoush has sustained a knee injury whilst on international duty with Egypt. The City striker suffered the injury in the early stages of Egypt’s World Cup qualifying match with Burkina Faso on Tuesday evening. Initial results on a scan performed in Egypt indicate he will not be available for the Manchester derby on Sunday, and he will now return to Manchester for more assessment and to begin his rehabilitation. Everyone at City wishes Omar a speedy recovery."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

The timing could hardly be worse for Guardiola. His squad is already stretched thin, and the injury list reads more like a starting XI than a fitness report. Rayan Cherki is sidelined for at least two months with a thigh tear, while Kalvin Phillips remains a long-term absentee after Achilles surgery. Defenders Josko Gvardiol, Abdukodir Khusanov and John Stones are all battling to be fit, with Stones pulling out of the England camp due to a muscle issue. Phil Foden and Savinho both missed City’s defeat to Brighton before the break and are racing against time to return. Guardiola could be without nine senior players for Sunday's Manchester derby, a nightmare scenario as United look to exploit City’s weakened ranks.

It's not Palmer: PSG now submit £130m offer for "unbelievable" Chelsea star

Paris Saint-Germain have now submitted a staggering £130m offer for an “unbelievable” Chelsea star, who Luis Enrique has personally requested, according to a report.

Maresca's star players attracting interest

It should come as no surprise that Cole Palmer has been attracting interest from rival clubs this summer, given the attacking midfielder’s exploits at the Club World Cup, and there have even been suggestions that Manchester City launched a £170m offer.

Palmer has also caught PSG’s attention, with the French club being touted to smash the existing world-record transfer fee with a £217m move for the Englishman, but the deal did not come to fruition.

In what has proven to be a savvy move, BlueCo tied the former Manchester City man down on a deal spanning until 2033, meaning they remain in a very strong negotiating position, and there is little reason to cash-in this summer.

However, Palmer is not the only Chelsea star attracting interest from elsewhere, with a report from Spain revealing that PSG have now submitted an offer amounting to €150m (£130m) for midfielder Enzo Fernandez.

Same agent as Caicedo: Chelsea now eyeing "warrior" who's better than Araujo

Chelsea defender Levi Colwill is set to miss a significant portion of the upcoming season.

ByBen Goodwin Aug 11, 2025

Enrique has personally requested the signing of Fernandez, with the PSG manager of the belief that the Argentine would be the ideal replacement for Fabian Ruiz, and the French club are now hoping to close the deal within the next few weeks.

While the central midfielder is regarded as one of their main targets, it could be difficult for PSG to get a deal done, given that he is under contract until 2032, which means there is little reason for Enzo Maresca’s side to cash-in anytime soon.

"Unbelievable" Fernandez must remain at Stamford Bridge

After a shaky start under BlueCo ownership, Chelsea look like they are now building something under Maresca, having won the Club World Cup, and they shouldn’t risk that by cashing-in on one of their most important players.

Moreover, the Blues should be on a solid footing financially after defeating PSG in the Club World Cup final in New York, so there is little reason to sanction the Argentina international’s departure this summer.

The 24-year-old played a key role in the Blues securing a top-five finish last season, picking up six goals and seven assists in 36 Premier League outings, while he has also been lauded as “unbelievable” by journalist Lloyd Canfield and “world-class” by members of the media.

Rather than making any sales of key players, BlueCo should continue to strengthen Maresca’s squad prior to the window closing on September 1st, and it is now particularly important to bring in a new centre-back, with Levi Colwill suffering an ACL injury.

Potter's new Bissouma: West Ham accelerate move for "outstanding" £20m star

West Ham United are looking to sign at least one new midfielder before the end of the summer transfer window. Graham Potter’s options in the centre of the park currently include James Ward-Prowse, Edson Alvarez, and Tomas Soucek, amongst others.

Yet, that does not seem to be enough for the Hammers boss, who is now chasing a new man in midfield. One of the names they have been linked with is his former midfielder at Brighton, Yves Bissouma, according to reports.

However, with Tottenham Hotspur demanding just £17m, he is seen as a viable option for Juventus, which could make this a tough deal for West Ham to do.

There are other options, too, with the Hammers in talks to sign an alternative to Bissouma.

West Ham’s Bissouma alternative

It seems clear that Potter would love to recruit another midfielder this summer, with West Ham looking to climb up the table and build on last season’s 14th-place finish. If Bissouma is indeed unattainable, then they may well have identified a different option.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

According to a recent report from Belgian news outlet Voetbalnieuws, via PUNCH Sports Extra, the Hammers are set to accelerate their plans to sign Club Brugge and Nigeria international midfielder Raphael Onyedika. He is said to be ‘their number one priority for midfield reinforcement’ this summer.

Indeed, this is not a deal where Brugge will stand in the player’s way, with the club said to be ‘open to a transfer’ in the coming weeks.

At the end of May, the midfielder was valued at £20m, and with the player ‘patiently awaiting the right offer’, the East Londoners could look to push for a deal.

Why Onyedika would be a good signing

With Onyedika 24 years of age, it feels like now could be a great time for West Ham to pounce on the Nigerian international and bring him to the Premier League. Described as an “outstanding” midfielder by Belgian coach Hein Vanhaezebrouck, he has certainly built up a strong reputation.

Last season, he was a crucial player for Brugge in the heart of their midfield. Most often deployed as a defensive midfielder, the Hammers target played 52 games in all competitions, chipping in with two goals and two assists.

It will surely be a positive for the Hammers that Onyedika was such an important player in the Champions League, as his side reached the Last 16. He played 90 minutes against Aston Villa twice, Juventus, Borussia Dortmund and Manchester City, against whom he even scored.

Perhaps the 24-year-old could become Potter’s new Bissouma. The Mali international saw great success under the now-Hammers boss on the South Coast with Brighton, playing 90 games under his tutelage, operating in the heart of his midfield.

Surely, the Englishman would love to have a player like Bissouma in his midfield again, especially after praising his “undoubted ability” after his move to North London.

If West Ham miss out on signing the Spurs star, then perhaps Onyedika could be an apt alternative.

A deep dive into the stats via FBref is telling. Using numbers from Bissouma’s last season at Brighton and Onyedika in 2024/25, there is evidence to suggest that the Brugge star could replicate the Malian’s role under Potter in a West Ham shirt.

Progression from midfield will not be an issue, with the Super League star averaging 4.65 progressive passes each game compared to Bissouma’s 3.91.

Off the ball, the ability to make those recovery runs that Spurs’ number eight excels at is certainly there. Per 90 minutes, Onyedika averaged 5.83 compared to Bissouma’s 6.85.

For a fee of around £20m, this could be a dream move for Potter. If he is unsuccessful in signing Bissouma this season, then Onyedika seems to fit the required profile down to a tee, with his high-intensity work rate off the ball and progression in build-up.

West Ham are looking to sign a new midfielder, and they could do far worse than a player with age on his side and excellent numbers behind him.
