With Spurs due to play Newcastle in a friendly in Son's native South Korea on Sunday, the forward was on media duties and, just as the pre-match press conference was starting, he announced he wishes to leave the club this summer. Son joined Spurs from Bayer Leverkusen in 2015 and wrote himself into the club's history books by lifting their first piece of silverware in 17 years following the 1-0 victory over Manchester United in the Europa League final. Son's playing time has, however, been limited by injury and mixed form in recent seasons and his place in the starting line-up is no longer the guaranteed spot it once was. He explained he is seeking a new challenge and regular football ahead of the World Cup next year.

    WHAT SON SAID

Speaking at the press conference, Son said: “Before we start, I just want to share the information that I have decided to leave this club this summer.

“Respectfully, this club is helping me to make my decision. It was the most difficult decision I have made in my career. The main reason is I have achieved everything I can at Tottenham. I need a new environment for a fresh challenge.

“I have been here for 10 years. It’s a beautiful club with beautiful fans. I have such amazing memories. I just felt like I need a new environment to push myself to get more out of me. I think I need a little bit of change. Ten years is a long time.

“I came to north London as a kid. 23 years old, a very young age. A boy who couldn’t speak English. I leave this club as a man. Thank you to all the Spurs fans who have given me so much love. It felt like it was my home. It was one of the toughest decisions I ever made. I think it is the right time to leave. I hope that everyone understands that and respects that.”

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Speculation over Son's future is not new. Last summer, there was no expectation that Son would extend his existing terms at the club and a departure in 2025, particularly after the Europa League success, was always likely. The forward has been linked with a move to MLS and LAFC have reportedly tabled an offer to Son. Indeed, the Athletic goes as far as reporting that Son 'is keen' on the move and wants it to happen. With the World Cup being held in the US, Canada and Mexico next year, Son seemingly favours a switch that allows him to best prepare for what is likely his final World Cup with South Korea.

    WHAT NEXT FOR SON?

Son's representatives will now continue talks with LAFC in an attempt to get the move over the line, while other clubs across Europe and the world will likely be alerted to his availability. He will play what is set to be his final ever game for Spurs against Newcastle in Seoul in a pre-season friendly on Sunday.

Tom Westley underpins Essex as Lancashire face uphill battle

Late Porter wicket cements another forceful display from table-toppers

Tom Westley made 81 as Essex built a big lead•Getty Images

Tom Westley kick-started his season with an innings that helped underpin Essex’s commanding position against Lancashire in the Vitality County Championship at Chelmsford. The Essex captain chalked up 1,130 runs last season but had contributed just 56 in four innings this time around. However, his fluent 81 from 138 balls signalled a personal return to form and helped Essex construct a 231 first-innings lead against ailing Lancashire. By close of play Lancashire had lost captain Keaton Jennings while crawling to 10-1 in 10 evening overs as they battled to avoid an innings defeat. In a throwback to earlier times, there was a Cook scoring runs near the top of the Essex order, though this was the unlikely figures of Sam rather than Sir Alastair. The nightwatchman hung around for nearly two and a half hours and 126 balls for a highest first-class score that marooned him one run short of a maiden fifty.Essex had overhauled Lancashire’s first-innings total inside 36 overs for the loss of the overnight wicket of Feroze Khushi, who had laid the foundations with a half-century at a strike-rate of 160. Elgar and Cook were more circumspect, though their impact was just as demoralising for the flagging fielding side as they put on 120 in 36 overs.Cook pulled George Balderson for one consummate boundary while Elgar also pulled Balderson to the ropes and followed next ball with an angled glide to third man for another of his 10 fours.Lancashire did not help themselves when just after he had brought up the century partnership in 187 balls, Cook was dropped at third slip by George Bell on 44. He went to lunch on 49 and was back in the pavilion promptly afterwards, caught first ball at slip misdriving outside off-stump against Balderson.Elgar passed 17,000 first-class career runs during his three-and-three-quarter-hour stay, but was eventually out caught behind when wafting at Will Williams on 79, his third 50-plus score in five innings for his new county. There was no let-up with Elgar’s departure. Westley and Jordan Cox settled into a steady rhythm, Westley characteristically strong off his legs and Cox helping on its way to the boundary a Lyon ball that drifted down legside.Their partnership was worth 57 when Cox dragged Jack Blatherwick tamely to short midwicket. Matt Critchley, centurion against Kent last week, came and went quickly, Lyon finding one to turn sharply and catch the angled bat on its way into slip’s hands. The introduction of Luke Wells’s spin just before tea resulted in a flurry of scoring, his only over in the spell conceding 17 runs. Westley whipped a delivery through the covers to reach his fifty and then Michael Pepper twice lofted over long-on for a combined total of 10 runs.Pepper treated Bailey and the new ball with similar distain, hooking a six to fine leg and then driving through midwicket along the ground. But he played down the wrong line to Williams in the next over and was caught in the slips for 30 from 31 balls.Noah Thain played attractively on his first-class debut for 24 from 50 balls before being undone by one that kept low from Balderson and disturbed his middle and off stumps. Four overs later, Westley was also the victim of another low delivery from Lyon that beat his mistimed swish and hit his protruding front pad.The innings was wrapped up in the space of eight balls when Wells trapped both Shane Snater and Simon Harmer.Lancashire’s reply faltered when Jennings, a century-maker against Hampshire last week, went for his second single-figure score in the match, lbw misjudging a delivery from Jamie Porter. Nightwatchman Williams might have gone first ball but Harmer put down a routine chance at second slip.

Suzie Bates' nerveless final over keeps series alive after Sophie Devine stars

England threw away a winning position after a terrific innings form Maia Bouchier

Andrew McGlashan24-Mar-2024Centered around a captain’s performance from Sophie Devine, New Zealand kept the T20I series alive in dramatic circumstances after England had appeared to have victory wrapped up following a blistering innings from Maia Bouchier. The visitors needed 30 off 30 balls with eight wickets in hand when Devine removed Bouchier and the middle order made a huge mess of things. Amelia Kerr ran out Heather Knight then removed Amy Jones. It came down to eight required off the last over which was bowled by Suzie Bates, her first of the match, and she was able to get her team across the line.Devine, with 60 off 37 balls, and Kerr had earlier been key figures with the bat as they added 99 for the third wicket to take New Zealand to their highest T20I total against England.Final over dramaThere was a hint of controversy with the last ball of the penultimate over from Devine which looked to be a wide but wasn’t called, much to the disbelief of Danielle Gibson. It meant England needed eight off the last and Devine threw the ball to the experienced Bates who had not been used up to that point in the innings.Bates removed Holly Armitage first ball after she had been brought in as a concussion sub for Sarah Glenn. Then, although Bates missed a chance to run out Charlie Dean, she was able to close out the gap when Dean swung and missed at the last delivery.Devine hits her strideNew Zealand had a solid powerplay, reaching 40 without loss, but England were again threatening to stifle the innings as both openers departed. Devine and Kerr consolidated initially before the captain started to open her shoulders which included taking 15 off Linsey Smith’s final over.Devine’s fifty came off 30 balls when she lofted Dean for the second six of her innings although Gibson ended the innings with a terrific final over that cost just four runs to keep New Zealand under 160. Overall they managed 90 off their second 10 overs and 55 off the last five, although after the game Devine did question if they could have gone harder a little earlier.Maia Bouchier made her maiden T20I half-century•Getty ImagesBouchier’s blitzSophia Dunkley was run-out in the second over by a direct hit from Rosemary Mair, but Bouchier gave England early momentum when she took Mair for four consecutive boundaries in the fifth over. At the end of the powerplay. England were a healthy 60 for 1.Bouchier had not quite been able to go through the gears in the first two games but was very impressive here as she brought up a maiden T20I fifty off 33 balls. Overall she struck 11 fours and a six, which meant 50 off her 71 runs came in boundaries. She and Tammy Beaumont gave England the platform from where they should have won with the pair adding 92 in 61 balls. But when Beaumont found mid-off New Zealand started to squeeze with Knight not finding the fluency of the earlier matches. Devine gave her side the opening when she removed Bouchier although it still needed a remarkable effort to come out on top.Sarah Glenn subbed outIn the sixth over, Glenn dropped a catch at mid-off and banged her head on the outfield in the process. She didn’t appear to be immediately checked and came on to bowl the seventh over where she had Bates stumped to give England their first breakthrough. However, shortly after, she left the field and didn’t return. At the interval it was confirmed she had failed a concussion test and was replaced by Armitage to make it her T20I debut.”Sarah Glenn had a head injury assessment (HIA) and hasn’t passed,” an ECB spokesperson said. “Sarah will be assessed later today to determine next steps.”Losing Glenn for a period of time would be a blow to England’s attack, but it will be compensated for by the return of Sophie Ecclestone with those players who had been at the WPL available from the fourth match of this series in Wellington.

> Veja classificação e simulador do Paulistão-2023 clicando aqui

A prioridade do clube, neste momento, é definir as situações do elenco atual.

Rizwan and Fakhar help Pakistan draw level with Ireland

They added 140 off 78 balls after Pakistan had lost two early wickets in the chase

Danyal Rasool12-May-2024For a little over half the game, Ireland held on to the hope of sealing a famous series win. But a crushing onslaught from Mohammad Rizwan and Fakhar Zaman, who combined for a 140-run stand off 78 balls for the third wicket, helped Pakistan win the second T20I in Dublin by seven wickets and 19 balls to spare. Fakhar smashed 78 off 40, while Rizwan was unbeaten on 75 off 46, as Azam Khan ended the match with a flurry for sixes to level the series 1-1.Zaman joined Rizwan after the openers fell cheaply. Saim Ayub’s dry run continued, caught by a diving Curtis Campher third ball, while Babar nicked a harmless medium-pace delivery from Graham Hume in the following over to leave Pakistan 13 for 2 in a chase of 194.But Rizwan, who has been demoted in Ayub’s favour of late, demonstrated his value in the powerplay by combining dazzling slog sweeps with judicious placement. He bore the bulk of the run-scoring load until Zaman bedded in. Zaman dispatched Craig Young over square leg in the fifth over, and aside from a pair of costly drops, Pakistan were not troubled. There was a brief slowdown after the seventh over, but in the absence of Ireland’s ability to break through, Pakistan’s position grew stronger. It was the 13th over when the game moved irrevocably out of Ireland’s hands, as Pakistan plundered 21 off Young, plunging the asking rate from 10 to 8.4. There was even time, after Zaman holed out, for a whirlwind Azam cameo of 30 off 10 balls. The greater concern, after Pakistan failed to defend 183 in the first T20I, was another inconsistent bowling performance. Shaheen Afridi and Mohammad Amir were expensive and Pakistan were unable to contain Ireland in the Powerplay. Lorcan Tucker’s 34-ball 51 strung the first half of Ireland’s innings together, while Campher punished Shaheen through the middle overs once more. Each of the hosts’ top seven managed double figures, and all but two achieved strike rates of 150 or more, resulting in a first-innings score Pakistan’s bowlers will feel they are too good to have permitted on this surface.Graham Hume dropped both Mohammad Rizwan and Fakhar Zaman early in their partnership•Sportsfile via Getty ImagesShaheen, Amir mauled at top and tailShaheen Afridi is famed for being lethal with the new ball, while Amir is prized for his variations at the death. The left-arm pace duo opened the bowling as well as closed it out, and found themselves punished at each stage. Shaheen was among the wickets but that did not spare him from an onslaught as Andy Balbirnie and Paul Stirling went on the attack in the Powerplay. Shaheen got his own back when he dismissed both players in his second over, but didn’t quite learn his lesson from bowling to Campher in the first game.In the 15th over, Shaheen kept fine leg up while bowling at Campher’s body only to be put away for a four and a six. A belated decision to push the fielder back allowed Campher to predict the fuller delivery, driving him beautifully in front of cover for another six, before hitting a boundary to complete the 21-run over.Gareth Delany punished Afridi and Amir as Ireland scored 29 in the final two overs to speed past 190. The duo finished with combined figures of 8-0-93-4.Pakistan spinners drag Ireland backAfter Ireland scored 68 for 2 in seven overs, Pakistan turned to spin with the field spread. It is where Imad Wasim excels in slowing down the opposition. Harry Tector struggled for rhythm and Lorcan Tucker nudged him around. They showed little ambition against part-timer Ayub as Ireland scored 16 in three overs and Pakistan regained some control.Hume’s double dropHume’s day had begun well enough. He removed Babar in the second over of Ireland’s defence, but then made two costly mistakes just when Rizwan and Zaman were whirring into motion. He dropped Rizwan at deep midwicket off the last delivery of the powerplay, and then five balls later put down a top edge from Zaman at fine leg. Ireland had let slip their shot at sealing a historic series win, and Rizwan and Zaman’s century stand took the series into a decider on Tuesday.

Capsey the mainstay as England close out 'scrappy' 37-run win

Pakistan bat out full 50 overs as England struggle to make dominance tell

Alice Capsey set the foundations by finding her 50-over form with the bat before England’s spin twins, Sophie Ecclestone and Charlie Dean, sealed a “scrappy” victory for the hosts in their opening ODI against Pakistan in Derby.Pakistan’s search for an ODI win over England continues after this, their 13th match, which England won by 37 runs with two more games to come, at Taunton on Sunday and Chelmsford on Wednesday.Capsey top-scored with 44, her ODI career-best, as England set a victory target of 244 for Pakistan, who had never scored more than 209 in the format against England, although they gave that a nudge, finishing on 206 for 9 as England failed to finish the game off when they had their opponents on the ropes.Capsey’s innings broke a run of six in ODIs where she had failed to pass 6 and followed scores of 5, 31 and 1 during the T20I series with Pakistan, which England swept 3-0.Pakistan were well in the contest through the first powerplay but struggled against the spin of Ecclestone and Dean – who claimed five wickets between them – in a win Heather Knight, England’s captain, described at the presentation as “scrappy”. Seamers Lauren Bell and Kate Cross finished with two wickets apiece. After being put in to bat, England had a number of moderate contributors, as they did through the first two T20Is, with Amy Jones, Tammy Beaumont and Nat Sciver-Brunt making it into the 30s but failing to kick on. Capsey – the player of the match in Northampton with 31 and two wickets – threatened to do just that here after overturning an lbw decision off Dar when she was on 35. But she hung her head in disappointment after spooning a return catch to Nashra Sandhu with six overs of England’s innings left.Capsey faced 18 deliveries for her first boundary, picking the gap between extra cover and mid-off beautifully with a well-timed drive off Aliya Riaz and she followed that two balls later with a sumptuous drive for four.Capsey and Jones combined for a 67-run partnership after Knight fell for a laboured 29 from 49 deliveries, which included two chances, before Jones swept Dar and sent a top edge to Ayesha Zafar at square leg for 37.Openers Maia Bouchier and Beaumont had fallen lbw to Nashra and Umm-e-Hani respectively to leave England 61 for 2 in the 14th over.Knight was dropped on nought off Nashra when she skied one towards mid-on where Hani made a meal of the opportunity and Hani was again the culprit when Knight, on 18, struck Dar straight to midwicket only to see the chance spilled. It was Aliya who finally removed Knight, slashing at a wide delivery and producing a thick edge to Najiha Alvi behind the stumps. Sciver-Brunt fell in similar fashion, attempting to drive another wide one from Aliya but managing only to edge behind as England slipped to 118 for 4 just after the halfway point of their innings.Charlie Dean halted Pakistan’s recovery•PA Photos/Getty Images

After Capsey’s dismissal, the wickets fell steadily for an England side missing Danni Wyatt, who had scored a 48-ball 87 in the third and final T20I at Headingley but woke up feeling unwell on Thursday. Dean offered a neat cameo worth 20 before she was bowled, giving Dar her third wicket for the match, and Sarah Glenn remained unbeaten on 16 off 13 balls as England reached 243 for 9 in 50 their overs. In pursuit, Sidra Amin was dropped on 2 by wicketkeeper Jones off Bell but Jones made amends a while later by holding on as Sidra drove at a lovely Bell delivery which nipped away off the pitch outside off stump and brushed the outside edge on its way to the keeper without adding to her score. After 15 overs, Pakistan were 66 for 1 but, immediately after the drinks break, Ecclestone had Sadaf Shamas out chopping onto her stumps for 28.Muneeba Ali survived when Jones failed to hold an edge as the batter attempted a cut shot against Dean. But then Ecclestone pushed a gem through the gap between bat and pad to remove Ayesha Zafar in single figures and, although Muneeba reached 34, she fell driving at another excellent Bell delivery, full and jagging away to catch the edge for caught behind.Pakistan needed to score at around a run-a-ball going into the last 20 overs with four wickets down but when their captain, Dar, slog-swept Dean to Beaumont at deep midwicket it was the breakthrough England needed.Ecclestone claimed her third wicket in the next over when she pinned Fatima Sana on the front pad in line with leg stump as she strode forward and Dean then had Aliya out lbw as Pakistan lost three wickets for seven runs in the space of 15 balls. From there, the task proved too steep for Pakistan, despite Nashra and Najiha proving stubborn with an unbroken 28-run stand for the 10th wicket, underlining England’s inability to fully kill off the match. The hosts faced 157 dot balls compared to Pakistan’s 203, although England gifted them 40 extras, including 31 wides, and so they leave Derby with a good amount of work still to do.

Revealed: Man Utd plotting 'last-minute gamble' on 43-goal striker if Benjamin Sesko transfer pursuit fails

Manchester United are reportedly plotting a "last-minute gamble" on an alternative option in case their pursuit of Benjamin Sesko fails. While the Slovenian remains the preferred choice, United are said to be exploring contingency options as the clock ticks down on their summer business. The Red Devils are determined to bring in a new No.9 to complete Ruben Amorim's attack for the new season.

  • Face stiff competition from Newcastle
  • Might pivot to Serie A striker

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

United face fierce competition from fellow Premier League side Newcastle United in the race for Sesko. The Magpies have increased their bid to €80 million (£69.6m/$92.5m) in an effort to convince Leipzig to part with their highly rated striker. This has forced the Red Devils to scour the market for alternatives, and suggests that the think tank has zeroed in on Juventus forward Dusan Vlahovic.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

While United remain focused on Sesko, reports out of Italy suggest that intermediaries connected to Vlahovic have made overtures toward the English club. He is reportedly seeking a fresh challenge and has declined to commit to a new deal in Turin, which has spurred his entourage to actively explore options that align with his financial expectations and career goals. United are now weighing a "last-minute gamble" on Vlahovic if they step back from Sesko.

  • TELL ME MORE

Back in June, reported that a possible swap deal involving Jadon Sancho and Vlahovic was under discussion. While that arrangement never came to fruition, it marked the beginning of speculation linking the Serbian forward with a move to Old Trafford. Despite initial optimism in Italy that a player-plus-cash exchange might materialise, talks eventually stalled, and no agreement was reached.

Vlahovic, who has scored 43 Serie A goals for Juve to date, does not have a lengthy list of suitors, as only AC Milan have shown tangible interest in securing his services, though they too are weighing their financial limits before making a move. This makes the Serbian an affordable target for United, who have already invested nearly £135m ($179m) this summer to acquire Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha.

BCCI approaches Gautam Gambhir to become India's head coach

Former India batter Gautam Gambhir is on top of the BCCI’s wishlist to take up the position of India men’s head coach after Rahul Dravid’s term ends at the conclusion of the 2024 T20 World Cup in June.ESPNcricinfo has learned Gambhir, who is currently the mentor of Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL, has been contacted by the BCCI to gauge his interest in the job, and further discussions are expected after KKR complete their IPL 2024 campaign. However, the deadline for applying for the India head coach job is May 27, a day after the IPL final.Dravid, it is learnt, has communicated to the BCCI his decision not to seek another tenure. VVS Laxman, who had been expected to succeed Dravid, had made himself unavailable last year due to personal reasons. While Gambhir, 42, has no experience of coaching at international or domestic level, he has been in charge of the coaching staff at two IPL franchises. He was the mentor at Lucknow Super Giants in IPL 2022 and 2023 – they qualified for the playoffs in both seasons – before joining KKR for the 2024 season, where they will finish the league stage on top of the points table. Gambhir’s move to KKR for IPL 2024 was unexpected but it is learned he was persuaded to become the team’s mentor by the franchise’s principal owner Shah Rukh Khan.Related
