Amelia Kerr and Sophie Devine put New Zealand 1-0 ahead in T20I series against South Africa

Wolvaardt fifty and Luus 45 not good enough for a Kapp-less South Africa in a high-scoring contest

ESPNcricinfo staff14-Oct-2023After three abandoned fixtures, South Africa and New Zealand finally met in the fourth T20I in Benoni, where an unbeaten 135-run partnership between Amelia Kerr (70*) and Sophie Devine (61*) sealed the win for the visitors by eight wickets.Their half-centuries helped New Zealand recover after losing both openers in the chase of 173 inside the powerplay, and after that, their partnership, including 14 fours and three sixes, didn’t give South Africa a way in. It is also the highest partnership for the third wicket for New Zealand, breaking the record of 124 previously held by Katey Martin and Amy Sattherthwaite. Masabata Klaas and Tumi Sekhukhune took a wicket apiece, but were also expensive, conceding 75 runs in their combined seven overs. That South Africa were without Marizanne Kapp and Lara Goodall didn’t help their cause either. Kapp sustained a bruise to her lower right leg after being hit by a ball during the second T20I, while Goodall experienced a right ankle sprain during a warm-up fielding drill ahead of the aforementioned game. Both players will be unavailable for the fifth T20I as well but are expected to be back to training next week.In their batting innings, South Africa made a promising 172 for 4 after being asked to bat first at the toss, on the back of Laura Wolvaardt’s ninth half-century. She helped South Africa stitch a 53-run partnership with Anneke Bosch and a 37-run partnership with Sune Luus, but the skipper fell for 53, in the 16th over, to Hannah Rowe. Luus, with her unbeaten 30-ball 45, and Chloe Tryon (22 off 10) provided the late flourish as South Africa hit 67 runs in the last five overs, but eventually their target was chased with seven balls to spare. The fifth and final T20I in the series will be played in Benoni again on Sunday.

Bayern sporting director Max Eberl has apparently taken concrete steps to bring Borussia Dortmund winger Gittens to Sabener Street. However, according to, he was probably too late. Thepodcast 'Bayern Insider' reports that Eberl called Dortmund sporting director Sebastian Kehl on Saturday to discuss Gittens. However, the 20-year-old Englishman is said to have already completed his medical at Chelsea.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Eberl apparently also indicated in his conversation with Kehl that Bayern would "only" be willing to pay a transfer fee of €55 million (£47m/$63m). However, Dortmund are said to have already rejected a more generous offer from Chelsea at the beginning of June, with the Blues now reportedly paying €65m (£55m/$75m), including bonuses, for Gittens.

The BVB star is said to have been Eberl's preferred candidate for Bayern's desired offensive reinforcement alongside Nico Williams from Athletic Bilbao. The German champions are now likely to miss out on both players, as Williams is reportedly keen to join Barcelona.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Gittens is reportedly set to sign a contract with Chelsea until 2032. The England Under 21 international is said to have informed Dortmund's bosses of his desire to leave weeks ago, with only minor details remaining to be finalised before the transfer to London is officially announced. Kehl recently confirmed that "things are moving a bit, but no decision has been made yet" regarding Gittens' future.

Following the expected rejections from Gittens and Williams, Bayern still have a few other candidates in mind. Rafael Leao from AC Milan, and Liverpool duo of Cody Gakpo and Luis Diaz are said to be in the frame. Meanwhile, there is also speculation about a move for Stuttgart's Nick Woltemade, although he is being looked at as a successor to Harry Kane rather than an option to bolster the wings.

Meanwhile, Dortmund will face Mexican side Monterrey in the round of 16 of the Club World Cup on Tuesday night. Chelsea have already qualified for the quarter-finals, where they will face Palmeiras.

Cummins throws weight behind larger squad sizes at World Cups

Pat Cummins has backed an increase in the 15-man limit on squad sizes at the World Cup, as his Australia side face the prospect of picking a team from just 13 available players against England in Ahmedabad on Saturday.Mitchell Marsh has flown home for family reasons while Glenn Maxwell has been ruled out under concussion protocols, after falling off the back of a golf buggy on Monday. With both men due to return later in the tournament, Australia have opted against naming replacement players since doing so would render Marsh and Maxwell ineligible.New Zealand are also down to bare bones ahead of their fixture against Pakistan in Bengaluru on Saturday morning. Several players are nursing injuries or niggles following their defeat to South Africa, and they will consider selecting Kyle Jamieson less than 48 hours after he arrived in the country as injury cover for Matt Henry.Related

“Yeah, to be honest,” Cummins said on Friday, when asked if he would support a change to the regulations allowing teams to pick bigger squads. “It’s a two-month tournament. You wouldn’t want to be in a position where, say, a team like New Zealand have had some injuries.”Luckily, they’ve been able to hold someone like Kane [Williamson] in the squad but if they suddenly had to rule him out, I think that wouldn’t be good for cricket or the World Cup. It’s not like you can poach players from other countries, so I always think as many players as you need, you should be able to pick from.”Sean Abbott is the only member of Australia’s 15-man squad yet to feature in the World Cup and they are yet to have a full complement of players to pick from, with Travis Head only returning to fitness for Saturday’s win against New Zealand in Dharamsala. “We knew at the start of the tournament we were going to need a full squad of 15,” Cummins said.”It’s unfortunate, but we knew over a two-month tournament, you’re going to have to chop and change a bit,” he added. “To be honest, once the tournament started, we thought we’d have 15 available. But one-day cricket more than any other format, you have injuries, it’s high intensity, games are close together.”Glenn Maxwell will be unavailable for Saturday’s game against England due to concussion protocols•AFP/Getty Images

Cummins said that he has a clear idea of what Australia’s best XI looks like, but that he has been “really happy” with performances throughout the squad. “We need to obviously make the semi-finals, but hopefully this is the last hiccup where we’ve got a smaller squad to pick from and then once we get closer, we’ve got a full squad.”I’ve got in my mind the main XI – the way that we want to play – but I’m really happy with our squad. I think we’ve shown throughout this tournament, we’ve been able to mix up the batting order and anyone that’s come in has stepped up and done really well.”Australia will make at least two changes on Saturday, with Maxwell and Marsh sitting out, and are likely to bring Cameron Green and Marcus Stoinis into the side. That will mean Steven Smith and Marnus Labuschagne returning to Nos. 3 and 4 respectively. “It’s 11 of the 13,” Cummins said. “But I don’t think there’ll be too many surprises.”Maxwell was involved in light training on Thursday afternoon but will not be considered for selection until Australia’s fixture against Afghanistan in Mumbai on Tuesday. “He’ll just miss this one,” Cummins said. “He trained well yesterday and we’re still taking it day by day.”Stoinis said on Thursday that Maxwell’s injury was the result of “boys being boys” but Cummins played the incident down: “I played golf with him in the arvo [afternoon]. He played quite nicely… it was unfortunate, one of those things, a freak accident. It’s good to know it’s not something serious.”Marsh texted Stoinis to say that he would be coming back to India “to win this World Cup” and Cummins confirmed that Australia are expecting him to return: “He’ll definitely come back – I don’t think it’ll be a super long trip back home to Perth – but the main thing is he’s back home and we’ll give him as much time and space as he needs.”

Jonassen 'deflated' but determined after Australia axing

The left-arm spinner is excited to lead Brisbane Heat again in the WBBL after losing her place in the Australia side

Alex Malcolm16-Oct-2023Jess Jonassen admits she was left “pretty deflated” after being dropped during the recent T20I series against West Indies and revealed she is going back to basics ahead of the WBBL with an eye on playing a big part in the upcoming tour of India.Jonassen was left out of Australia’s side for the third T20I in Brisbane and the subsequent ODI series after copping the brunt of the Hayley Matthews onslaught in the first two matches at North Sydney Oval. She bowled just two overs in each match and conceded 54 runs in total, including eight boundaries and two sixes, all struck by Matthews. In game two, bowling the 19th over with West Indies needing 25 runs off 12 balls, she gave up four consecutive boundaries before finally dismissing Matthews. But the damage was done and Jonassen knew her fate.Related

“I was pretty deflated,” Jonassen told ESPNcricinfo. “Obviously, it’s never nice to be on the receiving end of a batting masterclass like that. And then obviously finding myself out of the team was pretty challenging as well.”It’s really cut-throat at the moment. If your execution is slightly off, where the women’s game is at the moment, you’re going to get found out. And with where Hayley was at, you didn’t have to miss by much and you were sailing over the rope.”The fact that we couldn’t get her out as a bowling unit, something had to change.”That something meant that Jonassen was left to carry the drinks for the remainder of the series. It is a rare position for Jonassen to find herself in as she has been the fulcrum of the Australian attack for nearly a decade. She is unequivocally Australia’s greatest-ever T20 spinner, having been a key bowler in four T20 World Cup triumphs as well as the Commonwealth Games gold medal-winning team and the ODI World Cup victory last year. The only title she has missed in Australia’s golden generation was the 2018 T20 World Cup, where an untimely knee injury kept her out of the side in the lead-up and the form of her young replacements, Sophie Molineux and Georgia Wareham, meant she could not win her place back.Aside from the 2022 ODI World Cup, where she was left out for one game for match-up reasons, she has been an automatic on Australia’s team sheet. But her form forced the hands of coach Shelley Nitschke and head selector Shawn Flegler and forced some tough conversations.”The conversations I was able to have with both Shell and Flegs, I was able to be really honest and really frank with them, and likewise them to me,” Jonassen said. “It’s never nice when you’re on the receiving end of it as a player but equally it still keeps you hungry, and you’ve still got to keep trying to find ways to improve.”One of our mantras as an Australian team is to keep evolving. Even though I’m one of the senior players there are still ways that I can improve whether that’s tactically, physically, or mentally.”Aged 30, after more than a decade in international cricket, Jonassen has found herself going back to basics to improve her skill execution under pressure.”Often you can get caught up, particularly as a spin bowler, in just becoming a bowling machine in the nets and you focus too much on what the batter is doing as opposed to what you need to do or what you need to execute,” Jonassen said.”For me, even in the recent series, I just did some simple target bowling. I just put a box of cones down and just had to try and hit that and then I put four or five separate little cones which replicated certain deliveries that I wanted to execute and it was taking the technique side out of it and just being like, okay, just find a way to hit spot. Basically, keeping it that simple.”Ultimately, if you go the journey after executing the ball that you want it to bowl, you can live with that more so than a really big mis-execution. It’s the balance between that as well as genuine competitive bat versus ball in the nets.”I think for me that stripping it back stuff is really vital, making sure that I really balance that and include that in my preparation. So when I come to games I know I’m 100% confident that I can hit that spot.”Jess Jonassen will lead Brisbane Heat again•Getty Images

Jonassen’s confident she can hit the spot in the WBBL again as she leads a high-quality Brisbane Heat outfit that is looking to claim their second title having been a genuine threat in the last three seasons without making it to the final.Despite having a lot of experience in her group, including international legspinners Sarah Glenn (first five games) and Amelia Kerr (last nine games plus finals), Jonassen knows she has a vital role to play with the ball and an opportunity to prepare herself for the upcoming tour of India.”The conversations with [the selectors were] that I’m a really crucial member of the side and there’s the opportunity to play a really big role over there,” Jonassen said. “There were also conversations around what sort of role am I going to play within the WBBL to be able to, I guess, help facilitate things over there in the sense of whether it’s powerplay bowling, and what types of deliveries to continue to work on at different phases of the game.”It gives me confidence knowing that just because I missed some games in this series doesn’t mean that things are over or I’m on the outer.”It just came down to execution and it’s something that I can control. Like I said, I’d be more than happy to be going for runs if it’s off my best deliveries all the time. There are quality players around the world. They’re allowed to play good shots as well.”My goal is always to get back to what I’ve built my entire career on, building pressure and bowling in partnerships. I’m not the go-for-glory type bowler coming on to be a genuine wicket-taker. I do take wickets but I get them through building pressure and bowling in partnerships.”It’s just going back to that and figuring out my method of what I need to do before I get onto the field to be able to make that happen.”

Perth curator expects 'fast, hard, bouncy wicket' for first Australia vs Pakistan Test

Pressure has been on the ground staff after a sedate pitch in last summer’s Australia vs West Indies Test

Tristan Lavalette12-Dec-2023Ten millimetres of grass has been left on the Optus Stadium pitch two days ahead of the first Test between Australia and Pakistan, but more is expected to be shaven off with head curator Isaac McDonald tipping a “hard, fast and bouncy” surface.Pressure has been on the ground staff after a sedate pitch in last summer’s dreary Test between Australia and West Indies, which went well into the fifth day. This match marks just the fourth Test to played at the 60,000-capacity stadium, which has yet to reel in fans in large numbers.A fiery wicket mimicking the WACA’s famous pace and bounce is being hoped for to help spark a Test match, with seemingly much at stake for Western Australia cricket. The drop-in pitch was moved into the stadium’s playing surface less than three weeks ago, having been curated at Optus Stadium since February. It contains the same local clay and grass species as the surfaces at the WACA, although pitches there played sluggishly earlier in the Sheffield Shield season.Related

Abrar likely to miss first Test after 'discomfort in right leg'

The Optus Stadium drop-in pitch was inserted during oppressive late-spring weather, but the match is expected to be played in somewhat milder temperatures, around 30-degrees Celsius.”The conditions are really favourable for making a really nice, fast, hard and bouncy wicket,” McDonald told reporters on Tuesday, with a green-tinged pitch notable in the backdrop. “I’m really happy with the presentation and how it’s going.”At the moment I’m at 10mm [of grass] and that’s where I started last year’s game. But there’s still a day of prep. It’s hard to give a number, but I can’t see it staying at 10. Definitely not having as much grass on top is what I’m aiming for.”With temperatures forecast to be milder, in contrast to many Perth Test matches played in stifling conditions, the pitch is unlikely to crack in the backend of the match.

“I just don’t think it gets hot enough. You need like three-four days of high 30s-mid-40s to really make it blow open,” McDonald said. “In this stadium we are quite sheltered whereas at the WACA it’s open and you get the wind, so it’s a different kind of an environment where we’re kind of stuck in.”With conditions set to be pace-friendly, there could be a temptation to bowl first for the captain who wins the toss.”I think there’s a little bit of grass on it, I can see from afar, so maybe a bit of seam movement early on and probably get a bit flatter as the game goes on,” Australia vice-captain Steven Smith said. “I assume it’ll have some decent pace and bounce, which is what it normally does here… but we’ll wait and see and play it by ear each day.”While the focus will be on the quicks, Australia’s major edge appears to be returning offspinner Nathan Lyon, who has previously extracted menacing bounce in his previous three Tests on the ground, yielding 22 wickets.”I like playing my role here. I enjoy bowling here, there’s nice bounce on offer, and it’s a nice place to bowl,” Lyon said. “The wicket looks like a typical Perth wicket. It’s all good signs.”Pakistan will be without legspinner Abrar Ahmed, who has a leg injury, and left-arm spinner Noman Ali is set to play. They started their preparation for the expected faster pitch with a centre-wicket training session at the WACA on Monday, having played a four-day match against the Prime Minister’s XI on a sedate surface in Canberra.”That was the slowest pitch a visiting team could ever play on in Australia,” Pakistan team director Mohammad Hafeez said on Monday. “As a team we are really happy with our preparations because we ticked most of the boxes.”

England forward Hemp has lavished national team-mate Hampton with immense praise, claiming the Chelsea goalkeeper is "thriving" in her role as the Lionesses' first-choice goalkeeper at the ongoing Euro 2025 following the retirement of the legendary Earps.

Hampton made her international debut for the senior women's team in 2022, being named in the squads for Euro 2022 and the 2023 Women's World Cup. However, she had to make do with a reserve role behind Earps, who was named in the Euro 2022 Team of the Tournament as England emerged victorious. She also won the Golden Glove at the 2023 World Cup, where England finished runners-up to Spain. Hampton, though, started getting more opportunities under Sarina Wiegman following Earps' injury in May 2024. In fact, in April 2025, Wiegman clearly stated that the 24-year-old was ahead of the veteran PSG custodian. "I have two world-class goalkeepers. At the moment, [Hannah] is a little bit ahead," the head coach said. Earps, with 53 caps and 26 clean sheets to her name, shockingly announced her retirement in May 2025 at the age of 32. Hampton has taken over the reins and was the only capped goalkeeper to be named in the squad for Euro 2025.

WHAT HEMP SAID

Speaking to , Hemp said: “Yeah I feel like Hannah is thriving in this tournament. I was witnessing that ball fly across to the other side of the pitch and I was in awe. It was a great pass in for that first goal.

“Hannah’s unbelievable, she’s great with the ball at her feet and she has proven… you’ve seen all the saves she has made in the last couple of games and she kept a really good clean sheet for us which was so important on Wednesday. She is incredible to have in goal and she’s a great person as well.”

According to , Real Madrid's request to postpone the opening game of the 2025-26 season against Osasuna has been turned down by La Liga, with the body chaired by league president Javier Tebas firmly of the believe that postponing the games in light of the Club World Cup is not justified.

  • AFP

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Per the report, Tebas has denied the existence of an agreement to postpone the opening matchday of the 2025–26 season, despite a consensus reportedly reached between La Liga, the Association of Spanish Footballers (AFE), and clubs. The deal — which Real Madrid insists was settled — stated that if either of the two Madrid-based outfits reached the final phase of the Club World Cup, their first league fixtures would be postponed to allow for the agreed three-week off-season layoff. AFE claims this was settled in a May 16 email and later confirmed on a joint call, following talks involving club representatives Dani Carvajal and Koke. La Liga, however, now insists no binding agreement exists, claiming Tebas never publicly confirmed it and that the criteria for postponement aren't met. The final decision rests in the hands of the Competition Committee's Sole Judge, who reports directly to the Spanish football association (RFEF). While there is already an agreement to postpone between Real Madrid and Osasuna, La Liga's stance on the matter lies on the opposite end of the spectrum.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Tebas has been blunt in voicing his criticism against the revamped Club World Cup, stating that he would go to any lengths possible to ensure the competition doesn't continue in the future. Ahead of the tournament in June, Tebas already hinted that La Liga will not make adjustments in accordance to Real or Atletico's progress in the CWC.

“There is already controversy over when Real Madrid and Atletico will start La Liga, which disrupts our usual football schedule and hurts us in the medium term," Tebas said.

“The decision on whether Real Madrid and Atletico will start La Liga later in order to rest is not mine alone. It will be made in due course when we see where they stand. But it can’t be that we keep having to constantly change our schedule for other competitions that we are not in favour of."

A drama-filled first 75 minutes on the fourth morning ended with Sneh Rana and Rajeshwari Gayakwad spinning Australia out of the only Test as India completed a historic win at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. It was India Women’s first triumph against Australia in Tests, in 11 attempts since 1977.Most of the hard work done by the likes of Tahlia McGrath, Ellyse Perry and Alyssa Healy on the third day to take Australia to 233 for 5 – with an overnight lead of 46 runs – was undone by India’s bowlers who picked up five wickets for just 28 runs in the first session on the final day. On a pitch offering turn and low bounce, Rana’s two wickets in two balls to dismiss well-set Annabel Sutherland and Alana King left Australia reeling. Gayakwad’s two unplayable deliveries then wrapped Australia up for 261, setting India a target of just 75, which they chased in under 19 overs.Rana ended the match with overall figures of 7 for 119, the best for an Indian spinner against Australia, which also earned her the Player-of-the-Match title.Related

Stats – India Women's first-ever Test win against Australia

The day began with Pooja Vastrakar, fresh off her four-wicket haul in the first innings, providing the early breakthrough by trapping Ashleigh Gardner lbw with a little help from the DRS. The start of the collapse also saw India becoming desperate as they had two unsuccessful reviews after Gardner’s dismissal.Amidst that, India’s spinners exploited the pitch better to move ahead. Sutherland, who seemed set to grind, fell to Rana for 27 playing the sweep shot when she gloved one behind, and India used a review to get the decision changed. The next delivery saw King getting an inside edge onto the stumps. At 251 for 8, the game was all but over for Australia with Rana scalping 4 for 63 in the third innings.Sneh Rana finished the match with figures 7 for 119•BCCI

Gayakwad then completed the formalities, first flummoxing Kim Garth with an excellent delivery that spun sharply past the outside edge to hit top of off stump. In her next over, she tossed the ball up outside off stump and got it to deviate into the batter sharply. Jess Jonassen, this time trying to hold the fort for Australia with the bat, missed an expansive drive and got cleaned up. Having been a bit unlucky on the third day when she bowled wicket-taking deliveries across her 27 overs that didn’t fetch her one, Gayakwad came back well to bowl out Australia on the final day.Chasing a small target, India lost Shafali Varma caught behind to Garth on the fourth ball of the innings and went to lunch at 29 for 1. Debutant Richa Ghosh threw her wicket away with 20 runs needed when she went for a wild heave across the line to hand Gardner her fifth wicket of the match. However, a steady Smriti Mandhana negated the spin threat with her unbeaten 38 and sealed victory ten overs after lunch with a lofted straight hit after charging down the pitch. The hosts, thus, completed back-to-back Test victories at home against two quality opponents in England and Australia, with clinical all-round dominance.
