Per Kicker, Bayern have made Wirtz a top target for the summer transfer window and while there was an expectation of competition from Europe's top clubs, it appears the field has narrowed to two, with the attacking midfielder set to choose between Liverpool and Bavaria in the next 10 days. Real Madrid had been linked, as had Manchester City, but the Reds have moved ahead of both, having met with Wirtz's family last week.

Liverpool are said to have told Wirtz that he could be the focal point of a new-look side under Arne Slot next season. The Reds' pitch is said to have impressed the 22-year-old, but any move will cost over €100 million (£84.5m), and Bayern have been in consistent communication as they aim to secure one of the Bundesliga's best players.

The Germany international has enjoyed a superb season in the German top-flight, scoring 10 goals and registering 13 assists in 31 appearances. He also scored six goals in nine games in the Champions League, although, of course, Leverkusen were knocked out of the competition by Bayern.

Sri Lanka, as a result, miss out on qualifying for this year’s World Cup directly
Andrew Fidel Fernando31-Mar-2023New Zealand’s seamers triggered a second successive Sri Lanka collapse, sending the visitors sprawling in the first few overs, before they eventually sputtered to 157 all out. Then, despite an early wobble of their own, New Zealand strode confidently to the target, inside 33 overs, to wrap up the series 2-0.Will Young held the chase together from No. 3, making an unruffled 86 not out. Though wickets fell at the other end, he remained steady, until Henry Nicholls joined him, and the pair put on 100 for the fifth wicket – Nicholls making an unbeaten 44.This is Sri Lanka’s fifth consecutive loss (in completed matches), and their seventh loss in eight games, and as such, it confirms that they have not qualified for this year’s World Cup directly. They will instead have to play the qualifying series in Zimbabwe in the middle of the year to earn their place. New Zealand, meanwhile, have cemented their position atop the ODI Super League table, with 175 points. It had been Matt Henry who set the tone for the match, however, setting off the collapse by nicking two of Sri Lanka’s top three off, before returning figures of 3 for 14 from his 10 overs. Henry Shipley and Daryl Mitchell also took three wickets apiece, as Sri Lanka’s batters struggled again to negotiate the bounce New Zealand’s seamers were generating. But then, the likes of Charith Asalanka and Dhananjaya de Silva also fell against the bowling of allrounder Mitchell, both attempting legside strokes, while failing to account for the extra bounce in the surface. Asalanka was caught at deep midwicket, and de Silva’s leading edge settled in the hands of mid off. At their demise, Sri Lanka were 70 for 5 in the 19th over.Matt Henry celebrates after dismissing Kusal Mendis•AFP/Getty ImagesPathum Nissanka played Sri Lanka’s only innings of substance, twice overturning “out” decisions in the powerplay, before progressing to 57 off 64 balls. Nissanka put away a couple of bad balls early on, but was largely quiet through the powerplay, as Sri Lanka kept losing wickets at the other end. He did pull Shipley for six in the 10th over, but this was largely as a means of relieving pressure, after the previous six overs had failed to yield a boundary and cost three wickets.Soon after he got to his fifth career half-century off 58 balls, but then was out next over in Sri Lanka’s most wasteful dismissal. Having set off for a quick single towards cover, Nissanka changed his mind and attempted to send non-striker Shanaka back to his crease. Shanaka kept coming, however, and Nissanka had no hope of making his ground, having paused.Although Sri Lanka’s lower middle order resisted briefly through Shanaka, who made 31, and Chamika Karunaratne, who hit 24, they could put together sufficiently substantial innings. Sri Lanka were all out inside 42 overs.Having come to the crease in the second over, Young was largely watchful through the powerplay, hitting only three genuinely poor deliveries to the boundary, as he moved to 20 off 36 while the fielding restrictions were in operation. He seemed settled through the early middle overs, even as Tom Latham fell, leaving New Zealand 59 for 4, and Sri Lanka with a small window of opportunity.Young and Nicholls eventually settled into a rhythm of collecting risk-free runs into the outfield, although there were nervous moments at the start of their partnership. One pull shot from Young, off the bowling of Kumara, landed only a little way short of the deep fielder; Nicholls was given out lbw on 1, but reviewed successfully.Eventually, batting got easier, and New Zealand were loping to their target, both batters finding boundaries around the ground. Young got to his half-century – the third time he’s crossed this milestone, with the other two trips to 50 having brought centuries – off the 71st delivery he faced, easing Lahiru Kumara to the straight boundary. The pair brought up their century stand with the last hit of the game. From Sri Lanka’s bowlers, Lahiru Kumara had been the most intense, taking the wicket of Chad Bowes with his first delivery, then dismissing Tom Blundell in that same over, both batters nicking to the wicketkeeper. When Kasun Rajitha also had Mitchell edging in the seventh over, they had New Zealand at 21 for 3.But thanks to Young, the hosts saw through that tough period.
Manchester City fell to a disappointing 1-0 defeat at the hands of Nottingham Forest at the City Ground, in a crucial game in the race for Champions League qualification.
Pep Guardiola’s side were made to work hard against a well-drilled Forest side, who eventually managed to break the deadlock and earn all three points.
Manchester City manager PepGuardiola
City had their chances throughout the game, and actually managed 14 shots, according to Sofascore. However, there were just three on target for the visitors, and the highest expected goals shot came from Phil Foden, a total of 0.16xG.
Forest came close to scoring just past the hour mark. Callum Hudson-Odoi lashed a shot at the City goal, cutting inside onto his right foot. However, Brazilian goalkeeper Ederson pulled out a brilliant save, diving low to his left and tipping the ball onto the post to keep City on level terms.
However, with seven minutes of normal time remaining, it was Hudson-Odoi who did break the deadlock. The former Chelsea attacker got on the end of a lovely ball from Morgan Gibbs-White, before driving at Josko Gvardiol and letting fly. This time, Ederson could not make the save, letting the ball in at the near post.
There was one player on the pitch, Gibbs-White, who was a standout, and City struggled to deal with him.
Gibbs-White’s performance vs. City
When a player like Gibbs-White is on song, it is hard to stop him. Well, City certainly found that out today. He was everywhere, orchestrating attacks for his side and of course, created the chance from which Hudson-Odoi scored from.
Talking of the pass, what a ball it was from the Forest captain. He picked up the ball inside his own half, and, under little pressure, was able to pick a perfectly weighted pass that was cushioned and brought down with ease from Hudson-Odoi, who did the rest.
City struggled to keep him quiet for much of the game. Allowing a player of that quality so much time on the ball to pick a pass like that was far from ideal for Guardiola’s side, and arguably cost them the three points.
It was a brilliant performance from Gibbs-White against the reigning Premier League champions. Frustratingly, one of their midfielders struggled to have the same kind of impact on the game.
The City star who struggled vs. Forest
It was a disappointing day for City as a whole, given the result, and one of their players did struggle in the centre of the park. It was a tough day at the office for one of the more experienced City players, Bernardo Silva.
Chalkboard
The Portugal international was given a 5/10 post-match rating from Simon Bajkowski, the chief Manchester City writer for The Manchester Evening News. He said the midfielder looked ‘like he could use a rest’, and criticised him for the fact ‘City attacks broke down at his feet too many times’, which is unlike him.
When comparing the stats of Gibbs-White and Bernardo, there are actually not too many differences. The City number 20 had 56 touches and completed 84% of his passes, whereas the Forest man had 52 touches and completed 90% of his passes. Bernardo created two chances, and the England international one.

However, stats do not always paint the full picture, and ultimately it was Gibbs-White who got the crucial assist. It was certainly a day where Bernardo, who lost the ball nine times, was outclassed by his opposite number.
With a game against Brighton and Hove Albion next up for City next Saturday, perhaps it is a game where Guardiola decides to rotate Bernardo out of the side. He put in a disappointing performance against Forest, and, as Bajkowski suggested, he looked tired.
Bernardo Silva for Manchester City.
It will certainly be a big call for the legendary City manager, who has relied on Bernardo so often over the years. However, perhaps some rest and rotation is what is needed to help him find his best form.

As Virgil van Dijk continues to move closer and closer to the exit door, Liverpool have reportedly made a fresh approach over signing a defensive reinforcement worth just £40m this summer.
Liverpool eyeing defensive addition
Now in March and into the final months of Van Dijk’s current deal, there’s every chance that the Dutchman will not be a Liverpool player next season, which should be ringing alarm bells for those at Anfield. Not only will they be losing one of the best defenders in Europe, they will be losing him for free to hand any potential suitor one of the bargains of the summer.
The Liverpool captain has been quick to reiterate that his future is not yet sealed, however, recently telling reporters: “I don’t know what’s gonna happen next season.
Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk celebrates scoring their fourth goal with Mohamed Salah
“If anyone says they do know, they are lying to your face. Contract on hold? Nothing on hold. I keep saying same things. If there is news, you will know it. I don’t even know myself.”
That said, it seems as though the Reds are at least planning for life without the Dutchman if it does indeed come to that this summer. According to Graeme Bailey for The Boot Room, Liverpool have now approached Chelsea about signing Levi Colwill this summer in a deal that would cost them just £40m.
Those at Anfield have a long-standing interest in the England international but have been unable to lure the Cobham graduate to Merseyside in the past. Now, in the face of Van Dijk’s potential exit, they have seemingly returned again in the hope of landing his signature.

He’s a future star…
ByTom Cunningham Mar 20, 2025
Still just 22 years old and battling for a top-four place at Chelsea, Colwill is yet to reach the peak of his powers despite already playing an impressive amount of top-level football – something that would have undoubtedly attracted Liverpool.
"Fantastic" Colwill previously pocketed Gakpo
Of course, Liverpool should be well aware of every strength and weakness that Colwill possesses, given that they’ve squared off against the central defender three times in the last three years. Coming against the 22-year-old at both Brighton & Hove Albion and Chelsea, it was at The Amex that Colwill kept Cody Gakpo quiet during the 2022/23 campaign.
As the Seagulls won 3-0, Colwill limited the Liverpool star to 0.08 expected goals and just 25 touches in an impressive display. Now, over two years on, Gakpo could get the chance to breathe a sigh of relief and welcome Colwill as a teammate rather than a rival this summer.

However, whether Chelsea are willing to part ways with their academy graduate is another question. Colwill has often found himself at the centre of praise during his Stamford Bridge rise, including from Mauricio Pochettino.
The former Blues manager told reporters: “At the moment, I need to see him and get to know him better. He is a fantastic talent, of course. We were talking about the things that also the way that we can help improve his game in all areas.
“He is so relaxed, calm and I enjoy talking to him. He has great character and personality. I am so happy to have him in the squad and to have this opportunity to work together.”

Batter racks up third straight fifty for Essex but Anderson has hosts jumping and weaving

Matt Critchley is on a roll for Essex•Getty Images
Lancashire 207 and 82 for 1 (Jennings 45*, Bohannon 28*) lead Essex 219 (Critchley 78, Anderson 4-70) by 70 runs Matt Critchley racked up his third fifty for Essex in three LV= Insurance County Championship innings this season on a rain-affected day against Lancashire at Chelmsford. The allrounder enjoyed the better part of an intriguing joust with England paceman James Anderson, who otherwise had Critchley’s team-mates jumping and weaving while taking two more wickets to return figures of 4 for 70.Critchley was last man out for 78 from 154 balls to follow scores of 55 and 53 in last week’s win at Lord’s against Middlesex. It enabled Essex to post 219 and eke out a 12-run advantage that at one time in the day looked beyond them. When a combination of bad light and drizzle curtailed play with 27 overs remaining, Lancashire’s unbeaten second-wicket pair of Keaton Jennings (45) and Josh Bohannon (28) had swung the pendulum back towards the visitors who hold a 70-run lead.Anderson had been almost unplayable in the first hour under slate-grey clouds as he extracted pace and movement from a pitch that had other batters looking like mere mortals. One ball was so full of life and pace that it beat wicketkeeper George Bell’s extravagant dive and raced away for four byes.England hopeful Dan Lawrence had looked comfortable enough against Anderson on the previous evening but failed to add to his overnight 39 when he fended the fifth ball of the morning into slip’s hands.Adam Rossington – who later gave up the wicketkeeping gloves in Lancashire’s second innings to Michael Pepper after damaging a hand – lasted just eight balls before he gave a thick edge to another lifter from Anderson and Luke Wells held on above his right shoulder.A third Essex wicket fell in the first half-hour when Simon Harmer, on nought, fenced at Tom Bailey and Wells snaffled again at first slip.Critchley, who had struggled for consistency last season after his move from Derbyshire, continued to hold up the other end and reached his latest fifty from 100 balls. He played first fiddle in a seventh-wicket stand of 43 in 12 overs with Doug Bracewell, though he was fortunate when dropped by Wells on 53. The enterprising partnership ended when Bracewell chased a wide ball from fellow New Zealander Will Williams and became the fourth slip catch of the morning. When Anderson was rested after a six-over burst worth 2 for 20, it gave Essex some respite and Critchley took advantage by nonchalantly angling Williams past the slips for one of his nine fours. When Anderson did return after the first of three rain breaks, there was not the same venom or spite in his deliveries. Indeed, tail-ender Sam Cook played two controlled drives to the boundary at third off England’s premier strike bowler in a pleasing cameo worth 20.The eighth-wicket pair put on 38 valuable runs that took Essex beyond Lancashire’s first-innings total of 209, but it ended when Cook dollied Colin de Grandhomme to midwicket. Essex were all out soon after when Critchley holed out to deep extra cover to give Williams a third wicket.Lancashire had reached equality when Wells departed for his second single-digit score of the game, going half-forward to Jamie Porter and being judged lbw. However, that brought Bohannon in to join Jennings and the pair patiently pieced together a half-century stand in 16 overs that was embroidered by some loose bowling from Bracewell, who was taken off after conceding a combined total of 24 runs from his third and fourth overs.
Everton are eyeing a move for a £20 million new defender to replace Jarrad Branthwaite if he leaves the club this summer, according to a new report.
Jarrad Branthwaite latest as Man Utd eye £50m move for Everton star
Branthwaite has been one of Everton’s key players since breaking into the team in the 2023/24 season, forming a formidable partnership with James Tarkowski in the heart of the Toffees’ defence.
Tall, strong, great in the air, and comfortable with the ball at his feet, the young Englishman has attracted plenty of suitors thanks to his stellar performances at Goodison Park.
Among those are Manchester United, who are set to go “all out” to try and land him in a £50m deal after seeing two bids rejected last year.
While he has previously said he one day wanted to be Everton’s captain, in a recent interview with BBC Sport, Branthwaite dropped a worrying hint that he could in the future be looking to move on to a club which has a better chance at winning silverware.
“It is about winning as many trophies as possible throughout your career,” said the 22-year-old, who surprisingly wasn’t picked in Thomas Tuchel’s first-ever England squad. “A career is short so you need to make the most of it and give yourself the best possible chance to pick up trophies.”
“To be fighting for trophies is something that would be one of the main ambitions for every player and come the end of the career, have as many trophies as possible.”
Everton make £20m+ De Winter a top target to replace Branthwaite
It appears that Everton and their owners, the Friedkin Group, are already beginning to prepare for life without Branthwaite next season.
According to a new report from TEAMTalk, the Toffees have made Genoa centre-half Koni De Winter a top target if Branthwaite leaves, with the defender enjoying a fine season in Serie A.
Koni De Winter for Genoa.
TEAMTalk reports that Everton’s scouts are following De Winter closely and that the 22-year-old Belgium international is considered a “strong candidate to reinforce their defence.”
The Merseyside club, however, will face competition from Inter Milan, Wolverhampton Wanderers, and a host of other clubs for his services, which Genoa reportedly rate at £21 million.
It’s understood that Genoa, who are currently 12th in Serie A, will not stand in the way of De Winter leaving this summer if the right offer comes in, despite his contract running until 2028.

De Winter, formerly of Juventus, was highly praised by former Juve teammate Leonardo Bonucci after he made his senior debut for the Old Lady back in 2021.
“Koni had a good game, he played with personality,” Bonucci said after the Old Lady’s 1-0 win over Malmo in the Champions League, according to Old Juve. “He has no fear and this will be an advantage for his career.”
“He must remain humble now, he has enormous room for improvement, he has a whole career ahead of him.”
