Imagine him & Windass: Sheffield Wednesday could sign "insane" Ugbo upgrade

Sheffield Wednesday are unbeaten in 2025 to date, but that doesn’t mean the Hillsborough masses aren’t still frustrated by what is being served up.

The Owls had to settle for a late 2-2 draw with Millwall last time out that could well have been three points on another day, considering Danny Rohl’s men missed a penalty late into the first half that could have given them a needed foothold in the Championship contest.

Ike Ugbo spurned that spot-kick opportunity, with the ex-Chelsea striker still without a league goal since his permanent return back to South Yorkshire, meaning this January transfer window could see a fresh attacker enter the building.

Sheffield Wednesday could swoop for potent striker

As per a recent report by journalist Alan Nixon, Wednesday are keen to sign deadly Stoke City marksman Tom Cannon, despite the 22-year-old being situated at the Potters on a season-long loan deal.

Nixon reveals that this window can see clubs attempt to test the waters with Cannon’s parent club Leicester City at the expense of Mark Robins’ men, with Wednesday and Luton Town now sniffing around.

Rohl’s side could do with that added boost up top when you look at how much Ugbo has struggled, alongside the fact Josh Windass might also be off this month, having been unexpectedly linked with Brazilian outfit Santos.

Of course, that might just be a wild rumour floating about, with Rohl loving the idea of having both Cannon and Windass at his disposal to terrorise Championship defences and potentially see his team push into playoff contention.

What Cannon could offer Sheffield Wednesday

It’s no secret in EFL circles that the Owls target has been a saving grace for Stoke so far this campaign, having lit up the second tier with ten strikes fired home in all competitions, despite his side lingering all the way down in 19th in the overall standings.

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

His electric start to life at the Potters – which saw him amazingly fire home four goals in just one game versus Portsmouth – even saw journalist Pete Smith label his goalscoring heroics as “insane”, which is a fitting adjective too for some of Windass’ outrageous moments of quality for Wednesday.

On New Year’s Day, the ex-Accrington Stanley ace jaw-droppingly scored the pearler above, which might well even be in consideration for a Puskas award down the line.

Away from this unbelievable strike, Windass has a further nine goals to brag about in league action on top of helping himself to two assists, with the captivating 30-year-old way out in front as his club’s top scorer.

Michael Smith is the only real competitor to Windass’ throne with five goals of his own, with the Owls suffering from not having a clinical marksman in their ranks after having that last campaign when Ugbo was at the peak of his powers.

Annoyingly, his goals have dried up ever since he penned a permanent switch, having fired home 11 league strikes last campaign, before squandering five big chances this season as a goalless member of the squad.

Whilst Rohl won’t completely write off the misfiring 26-year-old, it’s clear that the addition of Cannon would improve Wednesday’s goal numbers up top and give them a better fighting chance at a surprise promotion surge.

Liverpool consider Ben Doak transfer swap to sign £50m star winger for Slot

Liverpool are considering offering up one of their brightest young stars as part of a deal to land a £50 million-rated “clinical” new forward, according to a new report.

Liverpool finally see the best of Chiesa

Liverpool eased into the fourth round of the FA Cup over the weekend as they thumped Accrington Stanley 4-0 at Anfield. Diogo Jota, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Jayden Danns and Federico Chiesa were all on the scoresheet in the victory, which was the Reds’ first in three games in all competitions, having recently lost to Tottenham Hotspur in the EFL Cup semifinals and drawn with Manchester United in the Premier League.

While pleased to get back to winning ways, Chiesa’s goal, which was his first in a Liverpool shirt, against Accrington was particularly satisfying for manager Arne Slot.

The Italian, who joined the Reds in the summer from Juventus, has endured a difficult start to life at Anfield due to injury, being limited to just one start in all competitions. So tough has his time been with Liverpool so far, he’s even been linked with a return to Italy.

“It’s nice to make your debut and if you have played for this club already then you want to score your first goal, especially in front of your own fans. That’s what he did now, so that’s a good next step,” Slot said after the game.

Liverpool prepared to offer Doak for Semenyo

Despite scoring his first goal for Liverpool, Chiesa could soon find playing at Anfield even more difficult to come by. According to a new report from The Daily Star, the Reds are keen on bringing Bournemouth forward Antoine Semenyo to the club either this month or at the end of the season.

Semenyo has been a star player for the Cherries since the appointment of Andoni Iraola last summer, scoring 14 goals, registering five assists and impressing with his dynamic performances on the wings. The Daily Star report that to land the 25-year-old, who is rated at £50 million by the Cherries, Liverpool could be prepared to offer young striker Ben Doak as part of a deal.

Bournemouth are one of a number of clubs reported to be interested in Doak, who has impressed while on loan at Middlesbrough this season, scoring two goals and registering six assists in 21 games.

Semenyo, who was on the scoresheet as Bournemouth beat West Bromwich Albion 5-1 in the FA Cup third round at the weekend, has previously been hailed by his Cherries teammate Lewis Cook as “a powerful lad and has all the ability in the world”.

Cook’s comments suggest the winger would be a good fit in Liverpool’s system too: “As a team, we knew the quality he has and we saw that last year. He’s got to just keep working hard – being aggressive and being clinical. He’s got a lot better at running back and helping out the team too.”

Rangers and Koppen now targeting players from one country ahead of January

Rangers and technical director Nils Koppen are believed to be targeting players in a specific country ahead of the January transfer window, according to a fresh update.

Latest Rangers news

The Gers will feel that they have turned a corner of some sorts under Philippe Clement, following a slight improvement in results in recent weeks, allowing themselves to gain a little ground on Celtic in the Scottish Premiership title race. A 1-1 draw at home to Tottenham in the Europa League was also a good result.

While the Hoops still have a big lead at the top of the table, Rangers have at least managed to narrow the gap to nine points, and they will hope to gradually close in on their rivals as the weeks and months pass.

For that to happen, reinforcements could be needed in the January window, however, giving Clement the extra depth that he craves in his squad. Standard Liege youngster Isaac Price is one player who has been linked with a move to Ibrox, with the 21-year-old starting 16 matches in the Belgian Jupiler Pro League this season.

Chelsea midfielder Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall has emerged as more of a high-profile option for Rangers, too, having struggled to be a key player under Enzo Maresca this season, following his move from Leicester City in the summer. The Englishman could be a great signing for Clement, adding genuine quality in the middle of the park.

Rangers and Koppen eyeing players from Belgium ahead of January

According to a fresh claim from Ibrox News, Rangers will turn their attention to signing players from Belgium ahead of January, as they look to bolster Clement’s squad.

It is stated that Koppen is “gathering information about potential targets” in the country, although the Gers’ technical director “does not have anything imminent in the pipeline” currently.

Philippe Clement

This has to be seen as encouraging for Rangers, in terms of it being clear that they are showing an element of intent ahead of the January window opening next week.

Granted, there are no specific players who are mentioned, but it suggests that Koppen is working hard to bring in individuals who can enhance the Gers’ hopes of pulling off a miraculous comeback in the title race. Clement himself has hinted at a “hectic” January taking place, too, saying:

“It’s always a hectic period because players start to doubt whether to stay or not, there are a lot of talks from us with players and their agents to convince them about things.”

It will be interesting to see if Koppen’s Belgian scouting mission comes to anything, but Price could be an excellent choice to come in as a long-term option with lots of ability.

Are Leeds falling apart again? Daniel Farke feeling the heat at Elland Road as latest Championship promotion bid threatens to unravel

History is in danger of repeating itself for the Whites after an alarming dip in form at the worst possible time

On March 17, 2024, Leeds United went top of the Championship after a comfortable 2-0 win over Millwall at Elland Road. That result extended their unbeaten run to 13 games, with just one draw included in that sequence, and at that stage it seemed a decent bet that Daniel Farke's side would secure automatic promotion back to the Premier League at the first time of asking.

Unfortunately, everything changed after the international break. Leeds were held to a 2-2 draw away at Watford in their first game back, and only won two of their next seven matches, with the biggest low point coming in the form of a 4-0 hammering at QPR.

Leeds had to settle for the play-offs in the end, and that process just brought more heartbreak. After seeing off Norwich City impressively in the semi-finals, the Whites choked in the final at Wembley, losing 1-0 to Southampton, and were subsequently unable to keep hold of star trio Crysencio Summerville, Archie Gray and Georginio Rutter.

Speculation over Farke's future was rife, too, especially after the German admitted "it will be difficult to come back stronger", but Leeds stuck with the man they'd handed a four-year contract to the previous year. Fast-forward to the present, though, and supporters must be feeling like cast members in 'Groundhog Day'.

Leeds are very much back in the mix for a top-two finish, but their form has dropped off a cliff again when it really matters. Now, Farke must galvanise his troops before it's too late, with his job very much on the line entering a season-defining seven-game period…

  • Getty Images Sport

    Huge victory marred by injury

Some of the Leeds players may have been planning a Championship title party in their heads as early as February 24. Farke's side followed up a dramatic comeback win against Sunderland with more late heroics to see off main promotion rivals Sheffield United 3-1 at Bramall Lane, which saw them move five points clear at the summit and seven ahead of third-place Burnley.

Farke, however, refused to get carried away. "Each and every point brings us closer to where we want to finish, but you have to keep going," he told a post-match press conference. "We're seven points clear of third before this round of matches and we are seven points clear now. In this league the momentum can change quickly and you can need some luck."

The cautious tone in Farke's voice had a lot to do with the loss of club captain Ethan Ampadu, who sat out the trip to Sheffield after damaging the cartilage in one of his knees. The Leeds boss added when pressed for an update on the former Chelsea midfielder: "He won't be available for the upcoming games at least. He more or less didn't miss a minute last season. It's a blow for us. Perhaps it was the reason we didn't start this game well."

  • Getty Images Sport

    March madness

Indeed, Leeds missed Ampadu more than perhaps even Farke could have imagined over the next three games. The Whites were held to a 1-1 draw at home by West Brom before they surrendered their unbeaten run when going down 1-0 to Portsmouth at Fratton Park.

Victory over Millwall briefly lifted the mood, but Leeds then arrived at Loftus Road to try and exorcise the ghosts of last season, and ultimately fell short as they battled back from two goals down to draw 2-2 with QPR. Still, that point was enough for Leeds to go into the March international break top of the Championship for the second year running.

Leeds were also boosted by Ampadu returning from injury ahead of schedule, and there was an expectation that they would end the month on a high note against Swansea. The omens looked even better when Brenden Aaronson put Leeds 1-0 up at Elland Road inside 35 seconds, with the United States midfielder poking home from close range after a goalmouth scramble.

But instead of going in for the kill thereafter, Leeds were tentative; they survived one scare when Ilan Meslier saved a penalty from Josh Tymon, but the French goalkeeper would soon turn into the villain. Just after the hour mark, Meslier fumbled a routine corner, and was punished dearly as Harry Darling slid in the equaliser. Leeds looked devoid of any kind of rhythm as Ampadu struggled and the likes of Daniel James, Manor Solomon and Joel Piroe offered next to nothing in the final third.

Swansea deserved at least a point, but incredibly, Wilfried Gnonto appeared to have stolen all three for Leeds in the 86th minute, as he drilled a first-time shot into the net just moments after coming on as a substitute. There was to be one last sting in the tail, though, as Zan Vipotnik fired past Meslier from a tight angle right at the death to send the Welsh fans in the away end into raptures.

  • Getty Images Sport

    Time for changes

Meslier should have been able to parry Vipotnik's shot away from danger. It was well struck, but flew pretty much straight at the Frenchman, and when Leeds simply needed him to throw out a strong hand and push the ball away from danger, he was found wanting again.

Leeds have let too many wins slip away because of Meslier's ineptitude, including in the away fixtures against Hull City and Sunderland, and things reached a head following the Swansea draw where questions were being asked about Farke's judgement, and why on earth he was still sticking with Meslier when Karl Darlow was sat on the bench?

The ex-Norwich boss has acquiesced, however, and revealed on Thursday that he is set to make a change between the sticks for the run-in. Darlow, who made 52 Premier League appearances for Newcastle between 2014 and 2023, is the current Wales No.1, and a far more reliable pair of hands than Meslier, with the hope being that should shore up matters behind an otherwise pretty watertight defence.

Meanwhile, at the other end of the pitch, Farke would also be wise to take Aaronson out of the firing line. The American's goal against Swansea was only his second since the turn of the year, which explains why he did not make the latest U.S. squad.

Aaronson continues to fill the No.10 slot because Farke doesn't feel he has anyone else capable, having seen reported January target Emi Buendia move to Bayer Leverkusen instead. It's high time that Farke revises that stance, particularly after Gnonto's latest cameo from the bench.

    Unleash Gnonto

Gnonto is the obvious alternative to Aaronson, but there is a feeling that Italian ace still hasn't convinced Farke after handing in a transfer request following Leeds' first game of the 2023-24 season. That ill-advised move led Farke to drop Gnonto for two weeks, and the 21-year-old has yet to win back the full trust of his manager to this day.

That's understandable, especially since Gnonto's application levels still fall slightly below the required standard, but he is a match-winner on his day, and Leeds could use his fresh legs. Farke's refusal to rotate his attackers backfired last term as the Whites ran out of steam, and making the same mistake would be unforgivable.

From the outside, it's obvious that the likes of Aaronson, Solomon, James and Piroe need a bit of rest, and there's no excuse for Farke not to give them it with Gnonto, Largie Ramazani, Mateo Joseph and – if he ever stays fit – Patrick Bamford waiting in the wings. At the very least, Leeds need Gnonto on the pitch for longer than 10 minutes at a time, especially in tight games that he can edge in their favour with moments of individual brilliance.

Everton eyeing dream Moyes alternative who once held talks with Liverpool

Merseyside was rocked as Everton dismissed Sean Dyche from his duties hours before their FA Cup third-round tie against Peterborough.

The Friedkin Group have barely settled into their seat at the head of the table, but the ruthlessness shown by the new owners will perhaps feed supporters with a sense of ambition.

Everton manager Sean Dyche.

Everton are 16th in the Premier League, two points above the drop zone, and appear to have lined up a replacement already.

Everton lining up Dyche's replacement

Numerous sources including The Athletic have revealed that Everton have identified their former manager David Moyes as the top target to replace Dyche in the dugout.

Moyes has been out of work since departing West Ham United at the end of the 2023/24 season having led the Hammers to three successive European campaigns, the middle of which brought triumph in the Conference League.

Manager Focus

Who are the greatest coaches in the land? Football FanCast's Manager Focus series aims to reveal all.

However, the Goodison Park side could go down a different track. Transfer insider Graeme Bailey has confirmed that Everton are interested in moving for former AC Milan boss Paulo Fonseca, having held talks with West Ham before they appointed Graham Potter this week.

Why Paulo Fonseca would be "perfect" for Everton

The most distinctive tactical shift would be in regard to Everton’s emphasis on ball retention. Fonseca led LOSC Lille throughout the 2023/24 campaign and recorded the second-highest possession average at 57%, behind only Paris Saint-Germain.

Lille bossPaulo Fonseca.

It’s a progressive and more modern-catered style, with reporter Robin Bairner confirming last year that Liverpool had “held talks” with the 51-year-old. The Reds won’t be displeased with their final decision given Arne Slot’s success, but it suggests that Everton might be in line for a wonderful new chapter.

Indeed, Fonseca has maintained a respectable points average across his past five clubs, and even though he was dismissed by AC Milan last month, the Portuguese’s 1.75 average far surpasses Dyche’s at Everton (1.23 per game).

Fonseca has confirmed in the past that he seeks to win, first and foremost, but that he strives to do so with style, commenting that his team’s set up to “dominate and create more chances than the opposition.”

A seven-time trophy winner with Shakhtar Donetsk in Ukraine, there would be no promises of silverware at Everton, but perhaps a willingness to drive the club forward and into warmer climes, away from the biting cold of the relegation fodder.

Moyes would be a more pragmatic appointment, but perhaps one which would add a layer of security and stability that Fonseca’s expansive approach cannot promise.

Couple that with the fact he’s “perfect in the dressing room”, as was said by Fabrizio Romano, if TFG want to show some ambition, this may be the perfect move to make.

Dubey, Shubham, Patidar, bowlers fashion Madhya Pradesh's maiden Ranji Trophy title

Trio’s centuries in the first innings followed by Kartikeya’s four in the second helped restrict Mumbai to a lead of 107

Madhya Pradesh are the Ranji Trophy 2021-22 champions, 69 years after they last won the coveted trophy in their former avatar, as Holkar, and 23 years since they last had a shot at Indian domestic cricket’s biggest prize. At the same venue of their 1998-99 heartbreak, MP redeemed themselves in the best way possible, vanquishing 41-time champions Mumbai to lift the trophy on a cloudy Sunday afternoon.Victory was achieved shortly before tea on the fifth day when Rajat Patidar pushed Sarfaraz Khan for a single wide of point as MP had converted potentially tricky 108 chase into a cruise. Patidar, whose 122 helped set up MP’s 162-run lead in the first innings, was 34 not out, along with Aditya Shrivastava, the captain.Mumbai’s bowlers needed to go for broke and they struck gold early when Dhawal Kulkarni breached Yash Dubey’s defense in the third over to leave MP 4 for 1. The next half hour provided an engaging passage with runs coming in a trickle. But MP hardly looked under pressure, calmly battling through the new-ball burst, and putting away the occasional boundary balls with the fields in to keep tucking away at the runs.Once set, the batters tried to go for the big hits. This led to the dismissals of Himanshu Mantri and Parth Sahani, but there were no more twists in store. Patidar tantalized the crowd with some exquisite cover drives to the all-familiar RCB chants.Madhya Pradesh players pose with the trophy•Afzal Jiwani/ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Mumbai’s aspirations of setting a bigger total took a beating right from the outset as they kept losing wickets at regular intervals, even as MP restored to a defensive line of attack all morning. Their placers employed a wide line – almost sixth stump outside off – with six fielders to protect the off-side boundary. Against spin, especially Kumar Kartikeya’s left-arm variety, they employed a leg-stump line with six fielders stationed on the leg side.As such, the onus was on Mumbai to force the pace. Suved Parkar, who made 252 on debut in the quarterfinals against Uttarakhand, made a half-century but fell soon after Arman Jaffer was castled by a Gaurav Yadav slower delivery. Mumbai lost two early and MP were on the march.Sarfaraz employed the sweep to good effect, and repeatedly kept peppering different parts of the leg-side boundary by hitting against the turn. He made 45 before being the seventh wicket to fall when he holed out to deep backward square leg off left-arm spinner Sahani. He ended the season with 982 runs, 324 more than second-placed Patidar. After sweeping his way to some handy runs, Sarfaraz was out to the very shot that brought him runs – sweeping from way outside off to find the boundary rider. Mumbai’s last three hardly troubled the bowlers and were rolled over quickly for 269, leaving MP more than two sessions to gnaw at the target. When they came out, MP banished early jitters to set the tone for some serious celebrations in the MP camp. After five days of sitting motionless in the dressing room, belting out instructions through the 12th man, Chandrakant Pandit, the man who sobbed pitch side after the 1998-99 heartbreak, had his moment of redemption shortly before tea. As for the rest of the young group led by Shrivastava, it was time for some celebrations as the first step towards dominating the red-ball scene had been taken quite emphatically.

'The noises I hear' – Paul Scholes names the two key stars he expects Man Utd to sell in the summer in bid to raise funds for transfers

The Portuguese tactician is tasked with cleaning up the remnants of a fractured squad, as United’s current campaign edges toward massive disappointment. Amorim has been candid in his assessment, stating that significant changes are needed across the pitch. However, he has also acknowledged the financial limitations he faces – a problem that could make attracting top-tier talent especially difficult.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportTHE BIGGER PICTURE

While Amorim concedes that signings from elite clubs like Real Madrid are unrealistic, he still intends to target the best – and those won't come cheap. With several positions demanding immediate reinforcement, Amorim's initial transfer budget is expected to be modest unless player sales provide additional funds. That reality could lead to difficult decisions, particularly when it comes to offloading players, especially academy products with significant market value.

WHAT SCHOLES SAID

United legend Scholes said on : "It has to be a major concern. Where's the money coming from for new signings? We saw those interviews with Sir Jim, and they didn't make good reading. It doesn't look like Ruben Amorim will get a war chest to go to war with. It doesn't feel like that.

"I get the impression, and I could be wrong, but I think they might sell the two young players. I think they might sell (Kobbie) Mainoo and (Alejandro) Garnacho. Maybe they sell them this summer. The Mainoo one would hurt. They both would. Garnacho came later, but Mainoo has been at the club since he was a kid. He had a brilliant season last year, and it makes the academy system look bad if a player like him can't make it and they have to sell him. I hope I'm wrong. I hope they don't do that, but the noises I hear it is a big concern."

While Garnacho and Mainoo hold substantial market value – estimated at a combined £85 million according to – they are not the only players who could be sold to generate funds. Several current loanees, including Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, Antony, and Tyrell Malacia, are expected to be moved on permanently. In addition, a handful of veterans will leave as free agents when their contracts expire in July, including Christian Eriksen, Victor Lindelof, Jonny Evans, and Tom Heaton, freeing up space on the wage bill.

George Bartlett cements Somerset dominance after Tom Kohler-Cadmore impresses future team

George Bartlett’s first LV= Insurance County Championship half-century of the season cemented a strong Somerset position on the third day of the match with Yorkshire at Taunton.Having seen hopes of a big summer hit by an early shoulder injury, the 24-year-old top-scored with 88 not out as his side ran up 225 for six in their second innings to lead by 373. Tom Lammonby made 46.Tom Kohler-Cadmore had earlier been dismissed for 100 in a Yorkshire first-innings total of 276, replying to Somerset’s 424. Jonathan Tattersall contributed 43, while Kasey Aldridge claimed three for 23 and Jack Brooks three for 73.Much depended on Kohler-Cadmore, unbeaten on 68 against the county he will join next season, when Yorkshire began the day on 167 for four in their first innings, 257 runs behind.Matthew Waite again offered solid support as the pair extended their fifth-wicket stand to 65.It was broken with the total on 194 when Waite, on 21, was caught at short mid-wicket by the shrewdly-placed Bartlett off Aldridge.Kohler-Cadmore was becalmed in the nineties, partly by Jack Leach’s miserly spell from the River End, but reached a largely untroubled hundred off 199 balls, guiding a Lewis Gregory delivery to third man for two.The 27-year-old, who had struck four sixes and nine fours, received warm applause from Somerset fans, as well as those from Yorkshire, their appetites whetted for next summer. It took the introduction of part-time off-spinner Matt Renshaw shortly before lunch to undo Kohler-Cadmore, beaten by a ball that turned and trapped lbw on the back foot.At the interval, the scoreboard read 228 for six. With six runs added, the second new ball became available.Tattersall’s important 108-ball innings ended when he edged Marchant de Lange to 18-year-old wicketkeeper James Rew, who claimed his maiden first class catch for Somerset.Dom Bess drove a catch to cover off Aldridge and when Jordan Thompson was bowled be de Lange, Yorkshire still required one run to avoid the possibility of following on.A Shannon Gabriel single averted that danger, although Somerset may well have batted again anyway, and the deficit was 148 when he was last man out, skying a catch off de Lange.Openers Renshaw and Lammonby wasted no time building on Somerset’s advantage, taking their second innings score to 57 by tea, Lammonby lofting sixes off Thompson and Waite.Their stand had extended to 65 when Renshaw made a hash of an attempted reverse sweep off Jack Shutt and Kohler-Cadmore held a simple chance at slip.Undeterred, Lammonby soon cleared the ropes again, dispatching Bess over long-on. Another six followed off Shutt, but the next ball saw the left-hander get a leading edge to cover where Harry Brook pouched the catch.Lammonby had made his runs from just 47 balls and Somerset led by 236. Bartlett joined the sixes spree, lifting Shutt over wide long-on.First innings centurion Tom Abell made only ten before falling to another Kohler-Cadmore slip catch, attempting to cut a ball from Bess. But Lewis Goldsworthy helped Bartlett add 48 in sensible fashion before a lapse in concentration on 18 saw him slog-sweep a catch to square leg off Bess. At 162 for four, Somerset led by 310.Bartlett went to fifty off 86 balls, with 2 sixes and 4 fours, a timely reminder of the form that saw him first establish a regular place in Somerset’s red ball side in 2019.Rew and Gregory fell cheaply, but two more Bartlett sixes off Matthew Revis left the hosts reached well placed for a final day declaration.
