Jeetan Patel wheels Warwickshire into ascendancy against champions Surrey

Captain bags four-for with only Ben Foakes marshalling resistance for Surrey, giving hosts a 105-run lead

After scaling impressive heights last year, Surrey’s 2019 season is still at base camp. Like Somerset, who at this stage look favourites to take their title, they have yet to suffer a defeat, but neither have they registered a win. Warwickshire have tasted only defeat yet at the halfway point are the team in control.Their most potent weapon, as it has been so many times in the last eight seasons here, in only one of which he has not snared at least 51 first-class wickets, has been Jeetan Patel. The New Zealand offspinner and club captain turned 39 earlier this month, yet has a contract until the end of next season. It is not difficult to appreciate why Warwickshire value him so highly. On a slow surface from which Gareth Batty had been able to extract some turn on the first day, Patel introduced himself in the ninth over of Surrey’s innings and bowled beautifully for 31 overs unchanged. The heavy weight of left-handers in Surrey’s line-up doubtless came into his thinking and he troubled Scott Borthwick and Rory Burns from the outset, while simultaneously blocking off one end. Five of his first nine overs were maidens.Repeatedly, he turned the ball past the bat or found the edge only for the ball to fall safe. He had three or four men in a claustrophobic cluster round the batsman. There were stifled appeals, oohs and aahs from spectators, but no wickets for 15 overs until, suddenly, three came at once, in the space of five balls.Dean Elgar, another left-hander, frustrated for almost an hour, ran out of patience and smacked one straight to extra cover. It was a wicket well earned and there were two more right behind it. Patel’s namesake Ryan survived his first two balls but nicked the third to Dominic Sibley at second slip. Will Jacks lasted only one, Will Rhodes snatching the ball almost off the floor at first slip.It meant that Surrey, who had been 73 for 1 barely 40 minutes earlier, were in something of a spot at 92 for 6. Back in the pavilion, Burns was regretting still more keenly that he had played so loosely after working hard to get to 40 that a wide long-hop from Olly Hannon-Dalby had ended up in the hands of backward point.Liam Norwell, whose free-scoring 64 at No. 10 was now growing in value, had followed up his early dismissal of Mark Stoneman with a fine delivery that clipped the top of off, claimed a second success when Scott Borthwick, trying to work to leg, was pinned in front. Surrey could now think only of damage limitation, still more than 200 behind. They managed at least to avoid the follow-on. Rikki Clarke, who spent eight-and-a-half seasons pulling on a Warwickshire shirt before returning to Surrey during the 2017 season, launched a counter-attack, beginning with 14 runs from three balls off Norwell, prompting the former Gloucestershire bowler’s temporary removal from the attack.Clarke and Ben Foakes added 58 but the charge ended when a brilliant throw from cover point by Sibley ran out Clarke with a direct hit. Sibley, of course, is the ex-Surrey man who moved to Edgbaston as part of the agreement that allowed Clarke to travel in the other direction.Surrey immediately lost Morne Morkel, who lasted only four deliveries before Patel bagged him as his fourth success. With Batty at the other end, Foakes completed his half-century, but two wickets in two balls by Henry Brookes left the champions with a deficit of 105, to which Sibley and Rhodes added 26, coming through a testing 12 overs unscathed at the close.Patel was as pleased with the collective effort as much as his own performance. “To win three sessions today was huge,” he said. “To perform as we did all day was tremendous.”It is only halfway and we have to keep it going session after session. We have a young team but we have showed signs in the last two matches that the younger players are learning about playing Division One cricket and that is very positive for us.”

Sam Robson settles in on return to Radlett, as Middlesex make solid start against Glamorgan

Opener unbeaten on 85 as Seaxes reach 151 for 3 after rain delays start

ECB Reporters Network16-Jun-2019Middlesex opener Sam Robson demonstrated his penchant for batting at Radlett again as he hit his highest first-class score of the season against Glamorgan.Robson – who scored a century at the same venue against Somerset in the Royal London One-Day Cup – was closing in on a second ton for the season, having compiled an unbeaten 85 on a truncated first day of County Championship cricket at the Cobden Hill ground. As well as playing at Radlett, the 29-year-old clearly enjoys taking on the Glamorgan attack – he notched 79 against them in white-ball cricket earlier in the season – and his latest effort enabled Middlesex to post 151 for 3 from 51 overs after being put in to bat.Rain in the morning postponed the arrival of first-class cricket at Radlett until 3pm, but it was little surprise that Glamorgan declined the toss of a coin and set about getting their bowlers warmed up.The recalled Marchant de Lange found some movement during a tidy opening spell, getting Stevie Eskinazi to push forward and miss on more than one occasion as the opener struggled to get off the mark. There were a few anxious moments for Eskinazi, who survived two lbw shouts by de Lange and was also dropped on 15, flashing hard outside off stump and getting a thick edge to third slip, where Charlie Hemphrey was unable to hold on.Despite those chances, the opening pair added 77 and seemed set to remain in tandem at the tea interval – only for David Lloyd to strike with the final ball of the session, removing Eskinazi lbw for 31.Nick Gubbins made a cagey start, getting under way with a bottom edge that flew to the boundary, but he managed just five before Graham Wagg produced a ball that nipped back and pinned him leg before.Dawid Malan might well have made an immediate return to the pavilion, opting to hook his first ball and watching in relief as it dropped short of Timm van der Gugten, fielding at long leg. However, the Middlesex skipper seemed to be into his stride and had just dispatched de Lange for a sweetly driven boundary when he feathered one through to Tom Cullen, who sprang in front of first slip to take the catch.Robson, having progressed to his half-century from 95 deliveries, continued to look strong on the off side and carved Lukas Carey for two boundaries to advance to 85 at the close, with Paul Stirling alongside him at the crease, unbeaten on three.

West Ham hold transfer talks with another new forward alongside Osman

West Ham United have held talks with a "fascinating" new forward over joining them alongside FC Nordsjaelland winger Ibrahim Osman, according to broadcast giant talkSPORT.

Busy week at West Ham as Steidten eyes double signing

As we fast approach January deadline day, West Ham have enjoyed a very busy week of transfers with technical director Tim Steidten aiming to tie up a double deal.

"Beast" striker very keen to join West Ham in boost for David Moyes

The Irons have been linked with a new forward.

ByEmilio Galantini Jan 25, 2024

The club have already put pen to paper on a loan move for Man City midfielder and England international Kalvin Phillips, who comes in to bolster manager David Moyes' midfield in what is a serious boost.

West Ham have largely struggled in the middle of the park when Edson Alvarez isn't available, so the 28-year-old's availability as an alternative or partner to the Mexican will prove invaluable.

Phillips struggled to establish himself under Pep Guardiola at Eastlands, with one of the world's best defensive midfielders, Rodri, always ahead of him in the City pecking order.

Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips.

The former Leeds star is an established key player under Gareth Southgate at international level, though, and Moyes has long been an admirer of Phillips.

After moving for the Yorkshireman, West Ham have set their sights on Osman from Nordsjaelland, and talks have progressed rather quickly since news broke of their interest earlier this week.

The exciting 19-year-old is a product of the "Right to Dream" academy in Ghana, the same place West Ham winger Mohammed Kudus honed his craft as an up-and-coming talent.

Osman, despite his young age, has been a mainstay for Nordsjaelland in the Danish Super Liga – making 16 appearances for them.

West Ham have wasted no time in getting their business done over the last few days, coming after a fairly quiet first few weeks of the winter window.

West Ham hold transfer talks with Jota

Alongside Osman, talkSPORT back that West Ham are eyeing up a loan move for Al-Ittihad forward Jota.

The 24-year-old, who is apparently eager to make a move back to Europe before February 1, is on the Hammers' radar ahead of deadline day.

It is believed West Ham have held talks with Jota over joining them in January, alongside two other English top flight clubs.

The former Celtic star is desperate to quit Saudi and Moyes' side could offer him a way out of the Middle East, but he'll have to take a big pay cut on his £200,000-per-week salary.

Al-Ittihad, for their part, are happy to cut their losses on the player after not even registering him in their domestic squad.

Jota bagged 11 goals and 11 assists during his final season at Celtic, with journalist Josh Bunting calling him a "fascinating watch".

Modric has been impressed by the 20-year-old for many reasons throughout the campaign, but it is his mentality and his work in training that has earned the most praise from the Croatian veteran, citing his football IQ as another excellent trait.

WHAT MODRIC SAID

He told : "Jude has shown to everyone what kind of player and what kind of talent he is, but what surprised me most about him, because I didn't know him when I saw him playing and I heard the things about him, was his mentality. His work ethic is second to none. He is amazing every training session, every game. His winning mentality is what impressed me most apart from his football IQ."

The Belgian manager is all set to write a new chapter in his professional coaching career at one of the top European clubs despite failing to keep Burnley afloat in the Premier League after a disastrous season at Turf Moor. Bayern have shown their faith in Kompany and according to have coughed up around €10-12m (£8.50m/$11m – £10m/$13m) as a compensation fee to Burnley to lure him to the club. The former Manchester City centre-back has been awarded a three-year deal that will keep him at Allianz Arena until 2027.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Bayern have had a frustrating few months in their search for a replacement for Tuchel – who might restart his career in the Premier League after leaving the German club. Several candidates, including Xabi Alonso, Julian Nagelsmann, and Ralf Rangnick, have rejected the Bavarian giants, with Kompany actually ending up being the ninth choice for the job.

  • WHAT KOMPANY SAID

Speaking to the club's official website, Kompany said: "I'm looking forward to the challenge of FC Bayern. It's a great honour to be able to work for this club – FC Bayern is an institution in international football. As a coach, you have to stand for who you are as a person: I love having the ball, being creative – and we also have to be aggressive on the pitch and courageous. I'm now looking forward to the most basic things: working with the players, building a team. When the foundation is in place, success will follow."

  • WHAT NEXT FOR BAYERN?

Kompany will have little time to prove his mettle as Bayern's boss. The German heavyweights will seek immediate results as they are not willing to settle for anything less than the top domestic honours – the Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal titles, and a respectable finish in Europe. With a formidable squad at his disposable, which includes the likes of Harry Kane and Jamal Musiala, the Manchester City legend still has his work cut out.

Rangers chiefs now considering move for "fantastic" Premier League player

Rangers are understood to be interested in signing a "fantastic" Premier League player on loan in the January transfer window, according to a fresh update.

January transfer rumours

Philippe Clement is sure to be eyeing up potential new signings this month, in order to give his side the best possible chance to beat Celtic to Scottish Premiership title. A host of different players have been linked with moves to Ibrox in recent weeks, with a recent report claiming Rangers are keen on signing Hellas Verona left-back Josh Doig, who initially made a name for himself as a teenager at Hibernian.

Other defensive rumours have also emerged, with Everton centre-back Ben Godfrey mooted as a possible target in the latter part of last year, while in attack, Hearts striker Lawrence Shankland, who is enjoying an impressive season currently, has also been thrown into the mix as an option for Clement.

Now, it looks as though the Gers could be looking to the Premier League for a new addition, with a temporary move in January looking possible.

Rangers eyeing Owen Beck loan deal

According to Liverpool writer Dave O'Conell, Rangers are interested in signing Liverpool youngster Owen Beck on loan this month, should Andy Robertson return in time to allow the Reds to let the youngster go.

"Celtic and Rangers want to sign Owen Beck on loan. The highly rated 21-year-old has played 17 times in the championship, catching the eye of Scottish heavyweights Celtic and Rangers.

"Kostas Tsimikas left the field against Newcastle in considerable pain after a challenge with Bakayo Saka. The Greek international collided with Jurgen Klopp on the touchline in which Kostas Tsimikas broke his collar bone. Owen Beck is set to be given a chance to impress after a positive loan spell in the Scottish Premier League. Should Robertson return before the end of January it is believed that both Celtic and Rangers will battle it out for a loan move for Beck."

Beck could be a big boost for Clement in a position of need, having made his way through Liverpool's youth system and made two appearances for the Reds' first team, which says a lot about his ability. It seems unlikely that Jurgen Klopp will want the 21-year-old to have to feature prominently for his side at a key point in the season, however, so the hope for Rangers is that Robertson is back soon and that the Merseysiders sanction a loan move.

The Englishman is someone who has already been impressing in the Scottish Premiership this season, bagging two goals and assists apiece in 17 appearances for Dundee, and former Reds Under-23s boss Barry Lewtas has hailed him in the past, saying:

"I thought Owen was fantastic. The progress he has made over his time at the Academy, but certainly the last couple of years, is a credit to him with the work he puts in [and] how coachable he is because he listens and takes on board the information we give him."

Rangers in the mix to sign "incredible" defender in £5.2m deal

Beck could come in and give Clement an important extra left-back option as the games come thick and fast, and his experience of training with some world-class players at Anfield, from Virgil van Dijk to Mohamed Salah, could be invaluable.

Phil Hay: Leeds now looking at move to sign "brilliant" West Ham talent

Leeds United's full-back ranks have become significantly lighter since the start of the January transfer window. First, Djed Spence was sent back to Tottenham after his loan spell was cut short, and then Luke Ayling joined Middlesbrough on loan as he approaches the end of his contract this summer.

Predictably, then, Daniel Farke has been looking for reinforcements in that area, and a couple of Premier League players have already cropped up on his radar. Leeds are admirers of Nottingham Forest's Neco Williams but he's unlikely to be made available for transfer, while Burnley's Connor Roberts is also on their radar. And now, a third target in the top-flight has emerged.

Leeds eye Johnson to fill gap

According to The Athletic's Phil Hay, Championship promotion-chasers Leeds are "interested" in signing West Ham's Ben Johnson on a temporary deal. One of his biggest assets is his versatility – he can play on either side of the back four and also featured in midfield earlier in his career.

Johnson is a product of West Ham's academy and is nearing 93 games for the club, but he's fallen down the pecking order this season. Last year, he played 29 matches in all competitions and featured in 17 Premier League games, nine of which he started. He also made the XI for six of West Ham's games on their run to Europa Conference League glory.

However, this year, he's only been involved in six first-team games, and it took until West Ham's goalless draw with Brighton last time out, their 20th league game of the season, for him to start a top-flight match. His other starts have come in the Europa League against Backa Topola, and the Carabao Cup against Lincoln and Liverpool.

Having logged some action with the under-21s at Premier League 2 and EFL Trophy level, he's nearly played as many minutes for the youth team (270) as he has for the senior side (365). Last year, when he was given significantly more game time, Johnson called his standing in the squad "disappointing", so you can only imagine how he feels about his situation now.

Johnson has shown more than enough talent

Given that he's been used so little this term, it's easy to forget just how talented a player Johnson is. Last summer, he was part of the England Under-21 squad that won the European Championship without conceding a single goal, starting two of their games in the group stages.

In terms of individual prizes, meanwhile, he was named West Ham's Young Player of the Year in both 2020/21 and 2021/22 after what Paul Robinson called an "absolutely brilliant" first-team breakthrough. One of his coaches at the time, Stuart Pearce, added that he was a "wonderful professional".

It's worth noting that Johnson's contract is up in the summer, so West Ham may look to protect his value with a new deal before loaning him out, but once that gets done, it's hard to see why there'd be any obstacle to a move.

Ornstein: Arsenal eyeing "dangerous" £30m player with same agent as Arteta

Arsenal are thought to be eyeing up a potential move for a “dangerous” new player who shares the same agency as Gunners boss Mikel Arteta, according to David Ornstein.

Arsenal transfer rumours

Arteta and sporting director Edu are yet to make their move in the January transfer window following a busy summer market which saw the likes of Declan Rice, Kai Havertz, Jurrien Timber and David Raya all move to the Emirates.

However, that doesn’t mean that the club have written the current window off, with Arteta keen to bolster Arsenal's ranks in midfield as well as adding a new full-back and a striker. Financial Fair Play rules could make all three tricky with the deadline fast approaching. However, Arsenal have been linked with a number of players.

Transfer talks have reportedly been held for Everton midfielder Amadou Onana, although the club may need to sell before going ahead with any possible transfer. There have also been other rumoured midfield targets.

And now, it looks as if there is a new name on the Gunners’ list.

David Ornstein shares Arsenal interest in Dewsbury-Hall

Taking to X in the last 48 hours, reliable reporter Ornstein said that Brighton & Hove Albion are in talks to sign Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall from Leicester City. However, in his update, Ornstein added that Arsenal are also keen on the player, who is valued at £30m.

Dewsbury-Hall would offer plenty of versatility to Arteta’s side as he is capable of turning out as a holding, central or attacking midfielder. The 25-year-old also appears to be at the top of his game with a career-high €30m Transfermarkt valuation.

The left-footed midfielder also has experience of playing in the Premier League and has starred for the Foxes in the second tier this season, contributing to 18 goals.

Leicester City's KiernanDewsbury-Hallafter the match

Dewsbury-Hall’s manager, Enzo Maresca, also lauded the player as a result of his impressive performances, saying back in November:

"He is so dangerous near the box, and has the quality to score or assist from anywhere. He could already have had 10 or 12 assists. He is probably the most-improved for us and he's in the perfect position."

It could be a deal to keep a close eye on, but, with Brighton currently in pole position, Arsenal may need to act fast if they want to secure his services.
