    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Chelsea boss Emma Hayes, whose 12-year spell at the club will come to an end after Saturday's final day, confirmed on Tuesday that she will be without January signing Mayra Ramirez and attacking midfielder Jelena Cankovic for the Spurs game though, and how much James will be involved is unclear, too. The England star has missed the last two matches with a foot injury.

  • WHAT HAYES SAID

Asked about James' fitness, Hayes told reporters: "Lauren's trained once in 18 days, so still having a problem with her foot. That's her reality. She's definitely not in contention to start tomorrow."

Maharashtra climb to top of Group A table

Maharashtra make it three in a rowMaharashtra climbed to the top of the Super League Group A table of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy with a 14-run win over Jharkhand, the victory giving them 12 points from three games and a great chance of making the title round.Batting first, Maharashtra rode on good hands from Vijay Zol (50 in 43 balls) and Ankit Bawne (64 not out in 46) to put up a competitive 153 for 4.It was likely to be a steep chase for Jharkhand anyway, and only got tougher after they lost their top-five batsmen with only 64 runs on the board by the 11th over. There was no real let up, as the eighth wicket fell on 95, and Vikash Singh’s slam-bang 46 not out in 29 balls, with three fours and three sixes, only served to reduce the deficit.Jharkhand’s campaign ended with two wins and two losses in the Super League stage.Deshpande, Bista help Mumbai rout VidarbhaMumbai kept their chances of qualification alive with a six-wicket win over Vidarbha, first restricting the Ranji Trophy champions to 137 for 8 and then dashing past the target in just 15.4 overs.Tushar Deshpande, the medium pacer, followed up his 4 for 19 in the previous game against Delhi with returns of 3 for 38 and Shardul Thakur picked up 2 for 21 as Vidarbha struggled to put together a major partnership. Four of their batsmen – Jitesh Sharma, Ganesh Satish, Rushabh Rathod and Umesh Yadav, from No. 8 – got past 20 but couldn’t carry on as Mumbai got a breakthrough each time they needed it.The chase was helmed by opener Jay Bista. He lost opening partner Siddhesh Lad early, but then added 51 for the second wicket with Shreyas Iyer (28) and 33 more for the third with Suryakumar Yadav, who blazed away to a 10-ball 25. Bista ended with an unbeaten 73 in 51 balls, with nine fours and two sixes.Mumbai’s last game of the Super League is against Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday.Piyush Chawla in his delivery stride•BCCI

Spinners help Gujarat get on the points tableAfter being pushed to the bottom half of the Group A table in the Super League stage of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, Gujarat finally registered a win, their spinners applying the choke on bottom-placed Railways.Led by Piyush Chawla, Gujarat’s bowlers restricted Railways to 110 for 9 in 20 overs and their batsmen then needed less than 16 overs to chase down the target, with Piyush Tanwar’s unbeaten 55 setting up the run past the post. The Railways innings did not get off the ground after they had opted to bat, as they lost their first five wickets within the Powerplay for only 36. The lower middle-order, particularly Harsh Tyagi (32 not out off 34 balls) tried to inject some fight and managed to push the score past 100 in the last few overs.Apart from the three wickets, Chawla was also the most economical bowler, conceding 12 runs off his four overs, and was ably supported by offspinner Karan Patel (1-23) and Axar Patel (10 runs off 3 overs).Gujarat lost captain Priyank Panchal in the first over, but by the time Railways managed to take a second wicket, Parthiv Patel and Tanwar had added 68 in 8.1 overs, as good as confirming the victory. Tanwar’s 55 came off 43 balls and included five fours and two sixes.Pawan Negi plays on the leg side•PTI

Negi, Shorey hand Delhi first win in the tournamentDelhi earned their first points in the tournament with a four-wicket win over Uttar Pradesh, who suffered their third straight loss in the competition. With the win, Delhi, who have now completed their campaign, pushed UP down to last place in the group, though UP have another game, and can still avoid the ignominy of a bottom-place finish.UP’s decision to bat first didn’t quite go as planned as they scored at less than a run a ball in the Powerplay. Pawan Negi’s double-strike in the seventh over then reduced UP to 37 for 2. A 44-run third-wicket stand between Priyam Garg and Akshdeep Nath resuscitated the innings, but the pair fell within the space of four deliveries for only a run thanks to Navdeep Saini, who removed Garg, and Negi, who accounted for Nath.Rinku Singh’s 17-ball 21, along with Shubham Chaubey’s 29 off 21 balls helped UP put on 140 for 6.In reply, Delhi lost their top three inside the first eight balls. Ankit Rajpoot dealt two blows in the opening over, taking out Manjot Kalra and Unmukt Chand before Hiten Dalal fell to Yash Dayal in the following over. Dhruv Shorey and Nitish Rana added a sedate 41 for the fourth wicket, with Shorey pressing on to make an unbeaten 48-ball 62. His fifty anchored the chase as Pranshu Vijayran and Lalit Rana chipped in with 34 and 16 respectively that helped seal the chase with two balls to spare.

Predicted Celtic lineup to face St Mirren including Nawrocki and "revelation"

Celtic will be hoping to kick off 2024 in style as they travel away from Parkhead to take on St Mirren in the Scottish Premiership this evening.

The Hoops head into this match off the back of three straight wins in the top-flight and are eight points clear at the top of the table, albeit having played two more matches than their closest rivals.

Brendan Rodgers' side ran out 2-1 winners in the Old Firm clash last time out as goals from Paulo Bernardo and Kyogo Furuhashi secured all three points.

However, the Northern Irish head coach is now set to be without Daizen Maeda and Reo Hatate as they head off to play for Japan at the Asia Cup, although Kyogo has not been selected for his country.

The former Leicester boss could now make some alterations to the starting XI that beat Rangers on Saturday. With that in mind, here is FFC's predicted Celtic XI to take on St Mirren…

1 Joe Hart

Celtic goalkeeper Joe Hart.

Rodgers could stick with Joe Hart as his number one once again. The former England international has kept eight clean sheets in 20 appearances so far this term.

Celtic have been touted with an interest in Ipswich Town goalkeeper Vaclav Hladky and that could motivate the English stopper to improve his performances to convince the club to avoid dipping into the market to sign a new goalkeeper.

2 Anthony Ralston

Celtic defender Anthony Ralston.

The first change to the XI could come at right-back as Alistair Johnston could be taken out of the firing line to provide Anthony Ralston with a chance to shine.

Johnston's performance against Rangers was embroiled in controversy as his alleged handball when contesting Abdallah Sima in the box has led to the opposition requesting audio from VAR to explain why no decision was made.

The Canada international was also somewhat fortunate not to receive a second yellow during the second half as he was penalised for an elbow on Sima whilst also on a booking.

Ralston could now come in to replace the defender. The Scottish full-back has made nine Premiership appearances this season and made 1.7 key passes per match.

3 Maik Nawrocki

Former Legia Warsaw centre-back Maik Nawrocki.

The second alteration could come at the heart of the defence after Stephen Welsh was forced off during the first half on Saturday with a shoulder injury.

This forced Rodgers to bring Maik Nawrocki into the match after just 35 minutes but the Polish defender did not take any time to get into the match as he went on to enjoy a fantastic performance.

The summer signing made four clearances, three blocks, two interceptions, and two tackles in just 55 minutes of action at Parkhead.

As you can see from the table above, the 22-year-old colossus has been rarely used in the Premiership this season but has impressed when called upon with vital defensive contributions, which is why he should be rewarded with a start against St Mirren.

4 Liam Scales

Liam Scales in action for Celtic.

Alongside Nawrocki, Rodgers should once again select Liam Scales on the left side of the central defensive pairing. The Irish ace won 100% (4/4) of his ground duels against Rangers as he snuffed out any danger from Cyriel Dessers on the deck with ease.

5 Greg Taylor

Celtic defender Greg Taylor.

Another player who could keep their place in the starting line-up is left-back Greg Taylor. The Scotland international was dominant on Saturday as he won an outstanding 100% of his nine duels, including five on the deck and four in the air.

6 Paulo Bernardo

Celtic midfielder Paulo Bernardo.

In the middle of the park, Paulo Bernardo deserves to keep his place in midfield. The Portuguese starlet scored his second goal in as many matches with a terrific volley to open the scoring against Rangers.

He also showed grit and determination with three tackles won and seven of his 12 duels won, which shows that the young gem can get stuck in as well as being able to provide quality in the final third.

7 Callum McGregor

Celtic midfielder Callum McGregor.

Callum McGregor is another player who should start once again. The Celtic leader and captain completed 94% of his attempted passes and created two chances against the Gers in what was a composed performance.

8 Matt O'Riley

Celtic midfielder Matt O'Riley.

Matt O'Riley had to battle through the game on Saturday as his nose was left bloodied and needed treatment. The Denmark international stuck with it and did not allow the blow to affect his performance.

9 Liel Abada

Celtic winger Liel Abada.

The third and final change to the XI could come on the right wing as Liel Abada could finally be unleashed after his injury issues this season.

He made his return off the bench against Rangers and that was his first appearance for the club in any competition since the start of September.

Abada, who was once hailed as a "revelation" by Alan Hutton, could replace Maeda, who struggled on the wing at Parkhead on Saturday.

The Japan international lost six of his eight duels and failed to complete a single dribble or create a chance for his teammates in 83 minutes.

Abada produced one goal, one assist, and two 'big chances' created in his first four league appearances of the campaign before his injury and could provide a spark out wide on the right for the Scottish giants.

10 Kyogo Furuhashi

Celtic forward Kyogo Furuhashi.

Kyogo Furuhashi should lead the line for the Hoops this evening after his wondergoal at the weekend. The Japan international produced an outrageous left-footed effort into the top corner from the edge of the box to beat a fully-stretched Jack Butland to make it 2-0 at the time.

He has plundered eight goals in 21 league matches so far this term and will be hoping that his derby brilliance will help him to kick on and hit a rich vein of form over the coming weeks and months.

Klopp must unleash Liverpool’s "agent of chaos" to terrorise Man Utd again

Liverpool suffered a surprising defeat to Union Saint-Gilloise in midweek, but the result didn’t matter too much in reality as the club had already topped their Europa League group before the final round of fixtures.

Jurgen Klopp will have had one eye on the upcoming Premier League clash against Manchester United today, and he gave a rest to some of his senior players.

With Erik ten Hag under some pressure at United, it is the perfect time to face the Red Devils and the German will be looking to unleash his strongest available starting XI.

This will include Darwin Nunez, who came on for a brief cameo against USG on Thursday evening, and he will be well-rested to face the Old Trafford side.

Darwin Núñez’s statistics this season

The 6 foot 1 centre-forward has settled into life at Anfield better this season than during his maiden campaign, and he already has seven goals and seven assists across 23 matches during 2023/24.

The Uruguayan has missed 15 big chances however and this is an area in which he really needs to improve, especially if he wants to score 20-plus goals per season.

cody-gakpo-darwin-nunez-liverpool-opinion

The striker does rank first across the squad for shots per game (three) along with ranking third for big chances created (six) and third for scoring frequency (a goal every 220 minutes) and this indicates that he could prove to be a solid attacking threat against United today.

Lauded by journalist Theo Squires as an “agent of chaos” before the Reds took on Real Madrid in the Champions League last term, his unpredictability could be a big advantage for Klopp.

United’s defence is flagging, and they have conceded 21 league goals already this term, six more than Liverpool.

Darwin Núñez’s record against Manchester United

The former Benfica hitman has only played against United once during his career. He was suspended for the first meeting of the 2022/23 campaign last August as Liverpool suffered a 2-1 defeat, but he was available for the return clash a few months later.

That match proved to be historic as Liverpool secured a stunning 7-0 win over their rivals and humiliated United in the process.

Nunez managed to score twice during the tie while also missing a big chance and taking four shots in total and with a bit of luck, he may well have had a hat trick.

This performance could play a part in Klopp’s selection ahead of the game and with several big names rested prior to the clash, the Anfield side will be raring to go.

Another massive win against the Red Devils could further boost their Premier League title hopes and should give them the confidence to secure another couple of wins before the end of 2023.

Nunez may have missed a few chances this season, but he has improved following a stop-start 2022/23 season and if he can replicate his display during the 7-0 win back in March, the United defence will struggle to cope with him.

Mumbai’s preparations for the Super League phase of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy have suffered a jolt with their captain Ajinkya Rahane declared unfit.Ajit Agarkar, Mumbai’s chairman of selectors, said Rahane had “pushed through” the group stage but he needed rest to recover. In the league stage, Mumbai topped the Group C table, winning five out of six matches, but Rahane made just 58 runs at an average of 9.67. Agarkar felt Rahane’s experience would have been the key during the Super League stage.”He was carrying niggles even during the league phase, which he kind of pushed through when we were in a bit of trouble. But he would not be 100% (for Super League),” Agarkar said.Suresh Raina is set to be another notable absentee from the Super League phase of the tournament. The Uttar Pradesh batsman wasn’t at his best before being ruled out, aggregating 80 runs in six matches, with just one fifty and four single digit scores.Closely watching Rahane and Raina’s recovery will be their IPL franchises Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings, where Rahane is the captain and Raina the most prolific run-getter. The IPL will start on March 23 with the Super Kings taking on Royal Challengers Bangalore. Royals will start their campaign in Jaipur against Kings XI Punjab on March 25.

Zimbabwe to break cricket hiatus with series against UAE

Zimbabwe’s extended international hiatus will come to an end when they host United Arab Emirates in April, after which they will visit Netherlands and Ireland in June and July.Zimbabwe Cricket has struggled to fill the gaps in its calendar since failing to qualify for the World Cup, with a rare trip to India – originally scheduled for March in the Future Tours Programme – falling through and Afghanistan pulling out of a tour scheduled for late April because the games would not be televised. The national side has had no engagements since November last year, when they visited Bangladesh, with players spending the season taking part in Zimbabwean domestic cricket or seeking opportunities in franchise T20 cricket overseas. The gap between international assignments will have stretched to five months before Zimbabwe host UAE for five ODIs, with the matches scheduled for April 10, 12, 14 and 16, all at Harare Sports Club. Before the ODI series gets underway, UAE will first face Zimbabwe A in a 50-over warm-up match at Old Hararians Sports Club on April 8, two days after their arrival in the country.Next up for Zimbabwe on the international arena will be an away tour to the Netherlands for two ODIs pencilled in for June 19 and 21, and two Twenty20 international matches set for June 23 and 25.From there, Zimbabwe will proceed to Ireland where they will play three ODI matches and three T20Is. The ODIs against Ireland are scheduled for July 1, 4 and 7, while the T20I matches are slated for July 10, 12 and 14.While the exact dates are yet to be confirmed, the current ICC FTP suggests that Zimbabwe could host Afghanistan for a Test, five ODIs and three T20Is in August, and then West Indies for five ODIs and one Test in October.

A massive U-turn from Bayern! Only one stumbling block could prevent Thomas Tuchel staying on as coach amid positive talks with German giants after Harry Kane & Co push for club to keep him

Thomas Tuchel is reportedly close to staying on as Bayern Munich coach amid positive talks with the club, with just one issue yet to be resolved.

  • Tuchel's agent in talks with Bayern board
  • German manager likely to stay on next season
  • Has backing of sporting director and key players
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

According to the talks between the Bayern hierarchy and Tuchel's management took place on Wednesday, indicating the club's desire to retain him for the upcoming season. This marks a significant shift in Bayern's stance as the Bavarian giants had launched an extensive search operation to find Tuchel's successor after the manager and the club announced the decision to part ways back in February.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

However, a comprehensive agreement between all parties has yet to be reached. The primary issue revolves around the duration of the new contract as Tuchel's original agreement remains set to expire on June 30, 2025. During fresh discussions, the coach's entourage is seeking an extension that would prolong his tenure until at least 2026. Despite this obstacle, there is renewed optimism that an agreement can be reached soon.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

While Bayern has explored alternative options, in Xabi Alonso, Roberto De Zerbi, Ralf Rangnick and Erik ten Hag, there has been little success in their endeavours. Hence, the current focus appears to be on solidifying a longer-term collaboration with Tuchel who went close to steering them to a Champions League final but fell short due to a spirited comeback from Real Madrid in the dying minutes of the match.

The club's willingness to engage in discussions to retain Tuchel underscores his importance within the organisation. He reportedly has the backing of key administrative figures like Max Eberl and Christoph Freund while several senior voices in the dressing room like Manuel Neuer, Thomas Muller, Harry Kane, and Leroy Sane have also put their weight behind the former Chelsea manager.

Shoaib Malik's captaincy in focus as Pakistan seek ODI turnaround

Australia are coming off an unexpected triumph against India, but will be without the unwell Glenn Maxwell for the first ODI

The Preview by Danyal Rasool21-Mar-2019Big PictureThe ODI leg of a series that began all the way back in October is finally set to be staged just two months out from the World Cup, with both Pakistan and Australia looking to gather momentum ahead of the marquee tournament in England and Wales. For Pakistan, the tournament begins just five days after the end of the PSL, with five ODIs packed into a ten-day window, and is one of the last remaining chances to assure fans that they are ready to turn a corner after a poor 50-over run over the past 18 months. There was a ripple of excitement when Shoaib Malik was handed the armband while Sarfaraz Ahmed served a suspension midway during the ODI series in South Africa. He began with a comprehensive win over the hosts in Johannesburg, inflicting a first ever Pink Day loss upon South Africa. Since then, however, results under his leadership have tailed off, with a loss in the decisive ODI and the following T20I series meaning Pakistan surrendered their unbeaten 11-series streak in the shortest format, one that had been built under Sarfaraz. To drive the point home further, Multan Sultans finished joint-bottom in the PSL under Malik’s leadership, while the Sarfaraz-led Quetta Gladiators romped to the title in Karachi last week. All of that means Sarfaraz’s absence for this five-match series – he is being rested – places particular scrutiny on Malik’s leadership skills. He will also have to cope without two young players who have become stalwarts over the past two years – Shadab Khan and Babar Azam – while uncapped batsmen Abid Ali and Saad Ali are new additions to the side, as is Quetta pace sensation Mohammad Hasnain.Australia, by contrast, are coming off a somewhat unexpected 3-2 series win against India, where they won the last three games after going 2-0 down. That result came against the run, popular opinion, and a general trend that had seen the world champions in a rut in the format. After the second game, Australia had won four of 28 ODIs since they last played against Pakistan in January 2017, and nearly doubled that in a week against one of the World Cup favourites, that too away from home.If Australia, who bring much the same squad to the UAE to face Pakistan, continue to play the sort of cricket that trumped India, a less than full strength Pakistan will have their hands full in Sharjah. Pakistan may have triumphed in both the Test and T20I legs of this series, but the 50-over format isn’t nearly as predictable at the moment.Form guide Australia WWWLL (last five completed matches, most recent first)
Pakistan LWLLWIn the spotlightYou would have got long odds just a few weeks ago on Umar Akmal ever playing for Pakistan while Mickey Arthur remains the coach. Following Umar being sent home from the Champions Trophy in 2017 and dropped from the contracted players’ list, there was a high profile bust-up between the coach and the player in September 2017. Since then, Umar hasn’t been in contention for any Pakistan squad, and the decision to recall him for the five-match series against Australia took many by surprise. His last international for Pakistan came against Australia in January 2017, and here, against the same opposition, is his chance at an astonishing redemption. Is he finally, belatedly, ready to become the player he promised to be all those years ago? Don’t hold your breath, but do tune in.Usman Khawaja hadn’t scored an ODI hundred till a fortnight ago. That was before the series was on the line against India, and since that third ODI, he has registered scores of 104, 91 and 100, nearly increasing his career ODI run tally by 50% over those three games. It is by no means a run that’s come from nowhere, with Khawaja looking a more focused, relaxed player ever since he revamped his whole fitness routine last summer, dropped around seven kilos and added a burst of speed that his game often lacked. Since then, he has scored a hundred against Sri Lanka in Canberra last month, and most impressively, a Test-match-saving hundred against Pakistan in Dubai in October, the second longest fourth-innings effort in Test history. As he faces his country of birth once more, Khawaja is at present the leader of the Australian batting line-up, and has looked the part for the past few months.Team newsPakistan are obviously taking the opportunity to experiment ahead of the World Cup. Abid Ali, Mohammad Hasnain and Saad Ali could all be in line for debuts at some point, but when that happens over the course of this series remains to be seen.Pakistan (possible): 1 Imam-ul-Haq, 2 Shan Masood, 3 Umar Akmal, 4 Haris Sohail, 5 Shoaib Malik (capt), 6 Mohammad Rizwan (wk), 7 Faheem Ashraf, 8 Imad Wasim, 9 Yasir Shah, 10 Mohammad Amir/Usman Shinwari, 11 Mohammad HasnainAn illness has swept through the Australian camp and has put Glenn Maxwell in doubt for the opening match. But on a dry Sharjah pitch, they could be expected to field more than one spinner.Australia (possible): 1 Usman Khawaja, 2 Aaron Finch (capt), 3 Peter Handscomb, 4 Shaun Marsh, 5 Marcus Stoinis, 6 Ashton Turner, 7 Alex Carey (wk), 8 Jhye Richardson, 9 Pat Cummins, 10 Nathan Lyon, 11 Adam ZampaPitch and conditionsSharjah hasn’t hosted an ODI for over a year, but the pitch looks notably dry, which will bring quality spinners into the game. Conditions are expected to be humid and sunny, with no rain expected.Stats and trivia No international ground has seen more ODI cricket played than Sharjah’s 236. Pakistan have been involved in 124 of them, winning 83 and losing 40. Pakistan last won a bilateral ODI series against Australia in 2002, one of just two such victories over the Australians in their history.Quotes”We have a few places left so performance here is crucial for those final places that Inzi [Inzamam-ul-Haq] and I have identified.”
“We are starting to get a real clear strategy and game plan for how we want to play one-day cricket and it’s just about making sure we continue that. We are always improving, we obviously want to win, that’s important, but leading into the World Cup it’s important to keep improving the whole time.”
