Moeen Ali makes Test case as Steven Davies digs in to guide Somerset

Steven Davies top-scored against his former county as Somerset twice fought back from testing situations

ECB Reporters Network22-Jul-2018Somerset 324 for 9 (Davies 72, Hildreth 57) v Worcestershire
ScorecardSteven Davies top-scored against his former county as Somerset twice fought back from testing situations on the opening day of the Specsavers County Championship Division One clash with bottom-placed Worcestershire at Blackfinch New Road. The wicketkeeper batsman hit a fluent 72 and there were also half centuries from Tom Abell and James Hildreth as Somerset recovered from 11 for 2 and then 115 for 4 to reach 324 for 9 from 96 overs by the close.England spinner Moeen Ali picked up three wickets on his return to Championship cricket.Worcestershire handed a Championship debut to wicket-keeper batsman Alex Milton, who was tidy and picked up three catches, and on loan Nottinghamshire paceman Luke Wood.Somerset’s new overseas player, Azhar Ali, made his first appearance for the County as the replacement for the injured Australian batsman Matt Renshaw.Brett D’Oliveira opted to put the visitors into bat after winning the toss and the new ball attack of Magoffin and Wood made a double breakthrough.Magoffin asked questions of both batsmen during an initial spell of 6-4-5-1 and he accounted for Edward Byrom (5) – caught behind by Milton who replaced broken-rib victim Ben Cox after 76 successive Championship appearances spanning five seasons. In the next over Wood trapped Marcus Trescothick lbw for 6 in his first appearance since May after recovering from a broken metatarsal with the total on 11.Azhar and Hildreth were initially watchful but then flourished during a third wicket stand of 99 in 28 overs.Hildreth, a century-maker at Taunton in the early season fixture between the sides, was the dominant partner and reached a 99 ball half century with 11 boundaries but Azhar provided a solid ally. The game edged back in Worcestershire favour with two wickets to Dillon Pennington during a fiery pre-lunch spell. Azhar (37) pushed forward and nicked through to Milton and then Hildreth (57) shouldered arms and was bowled at 115 for 4.A second Somerset period of recovery was instigated by Abell and Davies during a partnership of 126 in 33 overs. But it could have ended with the total on 140 as Abell (25) swept Moeen to backward square leg only for Joe Clarke, who was directly facing the sun, to allow the ball to slip through his hands and over the boundary rope.Davies straight drove Moeen for six and was first to his half century from 72 balls with also eight fours to his name.Abell followed his team-mate to fifty in more circumspect fashion from 107 balls. But Moeen broke the partnership when Davies (72) played back and nicked to Milton who held onto a sharp chance. He then claimed another wicket as Peter Trego (1) was leg before.Magoffin returned with the second new ball and picked up a deserved second wicket as Abell – 70 from 151 balls with 13 fours – was lbw.But then the Overton brothers, Craig (31) and Jamie (28), plundered 51 in eight overs before falling to Moeen and Ed Barnard respectively.

Prolific Heino Kuhn's fourth hundred outdoes Ben Cox's first to earn Kent a Lord's final

A wonderful game of 50-over cricket was decided with two balls to spare much to the despair of a young Worcestershire team

ScorecardSo now we know that Heino Kuhn is not unstoppable; it is just that Worcestershire did not stop him soon enough. Kent will contest the Royal London Cup final thanks to Kuhn’s fourth hundred in five matches, all of them in the 50-over competition, but the ball before they secured their two-wicket victory in a stomach-churning final over at New Road, Kuhn was holding back the tears as he left the field grim-faced fearing another magnificent display had this time ended in failure.Kuhn was 121 not out as Worcestershire sought to defend 11 off the final over, the task at the end of a wonderful semi-final handed to their 19-year-old seamer, Pat Brown, whose experience stretched to 16 matches across all competitions. Brown, attempting a full delivery for the first time, watched his second ball sail over his head for six, only to produce a nerveless response by deceiving Kuhn with a knuckle ball with his next and have him caught at short midwicket. The youngster, only playing because of injuries to Joe Leach and Josh Tongue, had outwitted county cricket’s form batsman, only for Harry Podmore, who had achieved something of a miracle by crossing while the ball was in the air, to strike Brown’s next ball over mid-off to take the game.Kent now await the winners of Monday’ s semi-final between Hampshire and Yorkshire, leaving Worcestershire to come to terms with defeat in a semi-final for the second successive year. This was not Kuhn’s most attractive century in the sequence by any means, but his game craft after Kent lost 3 for 31 in pursuit of 307 was once again excellent. Worcestershire will forever rue the simple return catch Daryl Mitchell shelled when the South African was 50. That enabled Kuhn and Alex Blake, who contributed an open-your-shoulders 61, to add a decisive 115 in 14 overs for the sixth wicket.By the time Blake fell at long-off, Kent were in sight of the line. Ed Barnard produced two excellent overs at the death, underlining what his innovative half century had shown earlier – that here is an allrounder who relishes the pressure – but to no avail. All that meant that Ben Cox might feel that this was another game when his excellence was overshadowed through no fault of his own. Such is the competition among England’s young wicketkeepers that, even at 26, Cox cannot be sure that he will one day win the England opportunity that many down Worcester way are adamant he deserves, but his reputation has risen another notch even if his maiden hundred in 50-over cricket failed to take Worcestershire to their first Lord’s final for 14 years.Beneath the Big Three of Jonny Bairstow, Jos Buttler and Sam Billings, county cricket can take pride in some natural glovemen who would have passed muster in any era, Ben Foakes and Ryan Davies among them, and Cox’s undoubted talents will be more widely recognised after he backed up his usual exemplary display behind the stumps with an unbeaten 122 from 106 balls which revived Worcestershire. They had subsided to 48 for 4 by the time the cathedral clock showed noon, but Cox, find willing allies in Brett D’Oliveira and Barnard, swept them to 306 for 6 with a potent combination of energetic scampers, powerful blows and judicious improvisation.Worcestershire’s early wobble was one wicket away from feeling terminal. Matt Henry, Kent’s incisive and influential Kiwi, struck immediately by having George Rhodes caught at slip. Podmore silenced Callum Ferguson, who looked in mint form before he shuffled across his stumps to be lbw, Darren Stevens, cricket’s version of the Baobab tree, bowled through a canny spell in which Joe Clarke failed to hit him over the top and Mitchell was bowled off his pads ad he tried to make room.Cox, though, has had an excellent tournament. He secured Worcestershire’s semi-final spot with 80 from 85 balls in their final group game victory against Warwickshire. Stevens might have bowled both him and D’Oliveira before marking the end of his spell by munching a banana. The stand swelled to 140 from 24 overs before D’Oliveira, who should have been stumped on 45 against Denly’s legspin, fell to a full toss from the same bowler when 78, a brilliant one-handed catch in the deep by Henry. If Calum Haggett had not wandered infield from long leg, Cox would have fallen to the hook shot on 82, which equalled his previous best; the bowler, Podmore was furious. There was another nervy moment on 95 when the small scoreboard showed him on 109 and the crowd’s jeers caused him to momentarily lose concentration: when you are chasing a maiden hundred, the last thing you need is for the scoreboard to award you a fantasy one.But Worcestershire regathered and 44 came from the last two overs as Cox was backed up by Barnard’s 50 from 28 balls, an innings of wonderful invention.Cox judged that Worcestershire’s 306 was “about par”. The average score at Worcester in this season’s Royal London Cup was 349, but this was a used pitch and there was a little bit of encouragement for the new ball. But Kent recovered from early damage as Worcestershire had earlier as Kuhn added to hundreds already logged against Surrey, Gloucestershire and Nottinghamshire.Lord’s was theirs and Billings, who seems fated never to get near the side he has been chosen to captain, will pray that he can surf Kuhn’s wave and make a contribution when it most matters.

Nottingham Forest: Cooper could already have Yates’ heir in dynamic teen dynamo

Nottingham Forest have reaped the benefits of nurturing academy stars following their return to the Premier League, with graduates both giving back on the pitch and financially through departures over the past few years.

From Matty Cash to Brennan Johnson, Forest’s academy has witnessed some of their own generate huge profit back to the club due to their worth at the point of flying the next, while others continue to flourish at the City Ground.

Steve Cooper has utilised the academy for his own strengths, as Joe Worrall and Ryan Yates remain at the club as integral members of the squad, with plenty of talent waiting in the wings to follow in their footsteps.

Who is Kristian Clarke?

One name that has been brought to attention this week is that of 16-year-old academy midfielder Kristian Clarke, who is a key member of the Reds’ U18’s side.

Clarke arrived on Trentside as a 12-year-old from Exeter, and has since worked his way through the pathways of the academy at Forest to now find himself in a position of power behind the scenes.

This summer, it was revealed that the youngster had signed his first scholarship with the Tricky Trees, signalling the start of what could be a make-or-break journey for the starlet with reference to his trajectory to the Premier League.

It could be assumed that the teen has grasped the opportunities ahead of him with a tight grip, as he was this week named as the Forest representative in the Guardian’s ‘Next Generation 2023’ list, giving readers a hint on notable prospects to track the progression of.

In the article, journalist Will Unwin declared that the 16-year-old has ‘all the attributes required’ to become a ‘fine central midfielder’, which is the position he is predominantly deployed at for the U18’s.

A versatile player, the Englishman can play as both an attacking midfielder and in a deeper role, with the Guardian dubbing him a player that is ‘mobile, quick over short distances and comfortable on the ball’.

Having made 12 appearances in the U18 Premier League last term, where he also claimed a goal, the future looks to be bright for the starlet, who has plenty of inspiration to follow at the City Ground.

What could the future hold for Kristian Clarke?

Budding talents within Forest’s academy will have seen first hand just how far hard work can get you, with Johnson being integral to his club’s promotion, and playing a significant role in ensuring the Reds stayed up in their return campaign.

The forward – who scored 29 goals in 109 games for the club – left his familiar surroundings to make the £47.5m move to Spurs on deadline day this summer, completing his success story as an academy graduate to a multi-million-pound acquisition for a top club.

While Johnson has been the recent poster boy for academy stars at the City Ground, a player that Clarke in particular could model his future around is Yates, who plays in an identical position and took the same path the 16-year-old is hoping to walk.

Once lauded as a “culture-setter” by Cooper, the 25-year-old defeated the odds to remain as a favourite at Forest, amid prior criticism from his own support and the competition within the squad for places.

Yates is the ideal model for Clarke to study, with the teen sporting a similar ideology, as the Guardian describe him as a ‘popular member of the team’ due to his stand-out attitude within the academy.

Having now secured 170 appearances for his boyhood club, Yates continues to live his dream on Trentside, setting the standard for those who may follow him as all signs point to Clarke potentially being one that could tell a similar story in years to come.

Celtic: Rodgers must replace Lagerbielke with 6 ft 3 "monster"

Champions League group-stage football is due to return to Parkhead under the lights this evening as Celtic host Serie A side Lazio in Glasgow.

The Hoops come into the match on zero points in their group after they lost 2-0 to Feyenoord in their first match in the competition this season and are up against a struggling side.

Lazio are currently 16th in the Serie A and have only won two of their seven league games this term, whilst they also recorded a draw against Atletico Madrid in their first group stage outing.

Brendan Rodgers' side will be hoping to build on the positive momentum that was started with a dramatic win over Motherwell in the Scottish Premiership last Saturday.

The Bhoys won 2-1 away from Paradise as Matt O'Riley scored a 97th-minute winner for the Scottish giants, after the home side had equalised and looked set for a point in the 95th minute.

What's the latest Celtic team news?

Rodgers has confirmed that central defender Cameron Carter-Vickers will not be available for selection against Lazio as he continues to recover from his hamstring injury.

The Hoops will also be without two players who were sent off against Feyenoord in the Netherlands, as they are now suspended for tonight's clash.

Odin Thiago Holm was shown a straight red card and will not be in the mix to start in central midfield, whilst centre-back Gustaf Lagerbielke is also out after being sent off for two bookable offences.

This means that there is an opening for a player to come in at the heart of Celtic's defence after the Sweden international started the win over Motherwell.

Will Nat Phillips start against Lazio?

Rodgers must now unleash Liverpool loanee Nat Phillips from the start as Lagerbielke, Carter-Vickers and Maik Nawrocki, who did not make the Champions League squad list, are all unavailable.

The Swedish summer signing started alongside Liam Scales on the right side of the defence at the weekend and this is the perfect position for the English titan, who is right-footed, to come in and take.

Therefore, the Northern Irishman should start the 6 foot 3 stopper for the first time in Europe this season since his temporary move to Parkhead from the Premier League side.

Liverpool defender Nat Phillips.

Celtic are facing a minor crisis at centre-back with so many options out of action, including Stephen Welsh, who is set to be out for three to four months, but Phillips has the quality to put in an excellent performance tonight to ease any fears from supporters.

He is set to be up against legendary Lazio forward Ciro Immobile, who has scored 198 goals in 305 matches for the club, and will be in for a tough evening. However, the 26-year-old defender has experience at this level and has shown that he has the ability to excel against the best of the best.

How many Champions League appearances has Phillips made?

The central defender played five Champions League matches during his time at Liverpool with those games coming against AC Milan, Atletico Madrid, Real Madrid, and RB Leipzig. Tough opposition indeed.

His side won three of those clashes and only conceded four goals, three of which came in a 3-1 defeat at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium against Real.

Liverpool defender Nat Phillips.

Phillips averaged a Sofascore rating of 7.10 across three games against Real and Leipzig combined during the 2020/21 campaign and caught the eye with a dominant 71% aerial duel success rate.

The English centre-back, who made 3.7 tackles and interceptions combined per match, has the potential to dominate Lazio and Immobile, who happens to have lost 75% of his Serie A aerial battles this season.

Celtic's central defender has consistently showcased an ability to win the physical battle with the opposition and the Italy international has struggled with that side of the game this season.

How many goals has Immobile scored this season?

Immobile has registered two goals in eight games for the Italian side throughout the 2023/24 campaign to date and is coming off the back of 14 goals and seven assists in 38 matches last term.

The 33-year-old, who has scored nine goals in 16 Champions League career matches, had also netted a a whopping 32 goals in 40 matches in all competitions during the 2021/22 campaign.

Lazio captain Ciro Immobile.

He has proven himself to be an exceptional goalscorer for Lazio over the course of a number of years, with only two goals needed to reach a double century of strikes for the club, but his physical play has been less-than-impressive this term.

Immobile has lost 66% of his ground duels and 75% of his aerial battles across seven Serie A outings this season which suggests that Phillips could be able to dominate him.

How good is Phillips in the air?

The English brute was once described as a "monster" in the air by Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp and this is backed up by his statistics over the years.

Phillips won 66% of his aerial contests across 17 Premier League appearances during the 2020/21 campaign and then caught the eye on loan with Bournemouth the following term, coming out on top in 69% of those duels in 17 Championship games for the Cherries.

Therefore, the Reds loanee has the potential to dominate Immobile, who has started seven of Lazio's eight games in the Serie A and Champions League, with his outstanding ability when the ball is off the ground.

The Hoops enforcer has consistently proven himself to be a dominant force and by contrast, the Italy international has struggled to deal with those situations, which could allow Phillips to impose himself on the veteran finisher this evening.

That's not to suggest his impact is limited to those situations, however. Indeed, the £65k-per-week gem, who was once dubbed "immense" by Klopp, could also make an impact in possession as he ranked among the top 7% of centre-backs for progressive passes per 90 (seven) during the 2020/21 Champions League campaign.

This essentially means that he was one of the best players in his position at progressing the ball through the thirds to start attacks for his side from centre-back on a regular basis.

Phillips could help Celtic to build play out from the back to create chances which paired with his aerial prowess, could well set Rodgers' men on the way to an unlikely result.

Man Utd could sign a bigger talent than Garnacho in £15m star

Manchester United are enduring a torrid start to the campaign, and thus Erik ten Hag is seemingly already looking ahead to January in an effort to fix their ever-increasing issues…

Who could Manchester United sign in January?

Wallowing in tenth and in very serious danger of a group-stage Champions League exit, things have hardly gone to plan for the former Ajax head coach, who is seeing some of his key stars wilt where they previously shone last year.

The likes of Casemiro and Marcus Rashford are both underperforming, with the latter in particular finding the net just once in all competitions so far this season.

Should his age truly be catching up with him, perhaps it is time to start investing in a successor, with there arguably being no better value option on the market than Royal Antwerp's Arthur Vermeeren, available for just £15m and of interest to the Red Devils among many other of Europe's elite.

Arthur Vermeeren

Having shone in Belgium for the last 18 months, there is scope for him to move to England and instantly dominate, given he boasts all the physical and technical qualities needed for success.

Who is Arthur Vermeeren?

Starting 23 times in the Pro League last term, it is actually his start to the new campaign that is now catching the eye, with the 18-year-old a key creative presence in the engine room despite operating as a steadfast and solid number six.

Across just ten appearances this term he already boasts three assists, whilst also averaging an 88% pass accuracy alongside 1.6 key passes, 1.8 tackles and 8.3 ball recoveries per game, via Sofascore.

Given the ease with which he has taken to senior football, it should come as no surprise that Football Talent Scout Jacek Kulig has rushed to praise him on a number of occasions. He would first write: "He plays like a 30-year-old with plenty of games at the pro level. High-quality midfield controller," before then branding him: "One of the most complete young midfielders in Europe."

To further emphasise his outstanding quality across almost every facet of the game, the teenage enforcer also stars when compared against those in the next 14 divisions similar to the Pro League, as he sits in the top 18% for progressive passes per 90, the top 17% for tackles per 90 and the top 16% for interceptions per 90 amongst a sea of other green figures, via FBref.

Such consistency in someone so young could arguably have seen Vermeeren even surpass Alejandro Garnacho, who may be Ten Hag's best young protégée now, but could quickly be usurped.

After all, whilst the Argentine boasts blistering speed and does have an eye for a goal, his record of just six goals in 45 senior appearances is hardly mesmerising, with his boss even suggesting his form had been "not good enough" to start the new season.

Although he too is just 19 years old, Vermeeren is not only one year his junior, but actually has four more senior appearances for Royal Antwerp than the former Atletico Madrid flyer, needing no time to acclimatise to the increase in level, but simply starring from the start. Starring in midfield too, is arguably an area where greater maturity is needed.

With the engine room being a particular area in need of desperate revamp too, perhaps Ten Hag could solve all of his issues with a January swoop for a talent who could easily surpass his current outstanding youngster.

Aaron Ramsdale reacts to 'tough' Arsenal return in Brentford victory as David Raya stand-in sends message to Gunners fans following potentially-costly error

Aaron Ramsdale admitted his return to the Arsenal team was "tough" after his Brentford error while sending a message to the club's "amazing" fans.

Ramsdale's long-awaited return to the Gunners' starting lineup looked set to be a disappointing one after his error led to Yoane Wissa's equaliser following Declan Rice's opener. However, Kai Havertz's late winner ensured Mikel Arteta's men secured all three points to save the stand-in keeper's blushes at the Emirates on Saturday. The morning after, the 25-year-old, who replaced first-choice stopper David Raya as he was ineligible to face his parent club, took to Instagram to give his thoughts on an eventful contest.

The ex-Bournemouth star, who made just his sixth league start of the season, wrote on Instagram: "This team ❤️❤️. It was tough out there but it was special to be back. I owe my team mates and the you amazing fans the world for the support I get week in week out 🙏🏻❤️"

Despite the England international making some important saves following his mistake, Raya, who will sign permanently for the north London outfit in the summer after a season-long loan spell from Brentford, is likely to be back in goal for Arsenal for the rest of the campaign. The former Sheffield United ace has been linked with a transfer exit after falling down the pecking order at the Emirates and while his future may lie elsewhere, Arteta still values his contribution to the squad.

WHAT NEXT?

Arsenal, who went top of the Premier League with the win, next face FC Porto in the second leg of their last 16 Champions League tie. The Gunners are hoping to overturn a 1-0 first leg deficit to reach the last eight of the competition.

Transfer news: Arsenal eye "excellent" new player; he’s friends with Rice

Some may have had doubts over Arsenal's ability to simply go again after the heartbreak of missing out on the Premier League title last season, but after the Gunners defeated Manchester City, it's fair to say that Mikel Arteta's side are well and truly back in contention once more. The North London club, alongside rivals Tottenham Hotspur, are still unbeaten, perhaps hoping that the international break hasn't brought their momentum to a halt.

It looks as though Arteta is already eyeing further additions to his squad in 2024, too, with one particular out-of-favour midfielder potentially receiving a second chance in the form of a move to The Emirates.

What's the latest Arsenal transfer news?

The Gunners don't look like a side in need of any major reinforcements, as shown by their almost flawless start to the Premier League campaign. That's not to say that Arteta shouldn't aim to add even more depth, however, especially now that his side are competing among Europe's elite in the Champions League, as well as balancing domestic duties. And that could see them make a surprise move in the winter window, weakening Manchester City's depth in the process.

The latest Kalvin Phillips transfer news claims that Arsenal are interested in the former Leeds United midfielder. According to reports in Spain, via Caught Offside, the 27-year-old is on the radar of those at The Emirates, who could yet turn their interest into a concrete offer come January, or next summer.

It would certainly be an interesting move, given how much Phillips has struggled under Pep Guardiola, failing to do enough to ever earn a run in the Spaniard's treble-winning side. The fact that he is good friends with Gunners midfielder Declan Rice could see him favour a move to North London, too. Whether it be at Arsenal, or elsewhere, Phillips is a player in desperate need of a fresh start and minutes on the pitch, particularly if he wants to keep his place in Gareth Southgate's England side ahead of the Euros next summer.

How many times has Kalvin Phillips played for Man City?

Manchester City'sKalvinPhillipsarrives before the match

To say that Phillips' game-time at Manchester City has been limited would be an understatement. The England international has started just two Premier League games since joining the Citizens in the summer of 2022. HHe has made just 15 appearances under Guardiola in England's top flight during that time. Even when Rodri was suspended for three games this season, Phillips did not get the call from the City manager.

The more that you look at it, the more it becomes clear that Phillips must move on if he is to get some crucial minutes on the pitch. When handed the chance, he has been more than capable in the past, too, earning the praise of Southgate, who said:

"He’s been excellent. The way he has taken to international football, it hasn’t surprised us because what we’d seen with Leeds, even in the Championship, we felt could convert into our team. We felt he could play an important role with us.

"To play in the enormity of the matches he did in the summer and play as well as he did is massive credit to him. He’s a very, very good player and he’s been a really important part of this – we’re 16 games unbeaten [in regulation time] now and he’s been a huge part of that."

Tottenham: Levy could make "concrete" Spurs move to sign "game-changer"

Tottenham Hotspur and chairman Daniel Levy by extension could make a "concrete" move to sign one player who's been called a "game-changer", according to reports.

Who have Spurs signed 2023?

Boosted by the summer signings of goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, young centre-back Ashley Phillips, assured defender Micky van de Ven, England midfield star James Maddison, winger Manor Solomon, exciting striker Alejo Veliz and Wales forward Brennan Johnson, Spurs have started this Premier League campaign in very fine fashion.

Sealing four wins from their first league matches, whilst scoring an impressive 15 goals in the process, new manager Ange Postecoglou's exciting, attack-minded style is on full display for all to see. Tottenham's latest battle saw them clinch an entertaining 2-2 draw away at north London rivals and title hopefuls Arsenal.

A brace from captain Son Heung-min helped them fight back from a goal down on two separate occasions, with Postecoglou hailing his young side for their grit and determination.

"They’ve come through that, going toe to toe with a top side," said Postecoglou. "There's a real will and desire to become the team we want to be, which includes making sure that you're disciplined and you're buying into the team ethos and we had a really young team out there. Vic, that's his first derby, Destiny, van de Ven, Pape Matar Sarr, Brennan, they're all in their early twenties, Porro, even Kulusevski is only 23, so it was a young team but just super proud of the experienced players we did have in there.

"Romero was outstanding, Bissouma has been brilliant all year, Maddison, and Sonny was just on a different level, not just his goals, although they were outstanding, but his work rate, his work ethic was incredible."

Spurs host Liverpool at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday afternoon, and while Jurgen Klopp's side are on a similar run of form, again remaining unbeaten, Postecoglou's side will be in very high spirits.

What's the latest Spurs transfer news?

Despite Tottenham's excellent form on the field, there could be concerns surrounding strength in depth if any of their key men – like Maddison for instance – get injured. Stars from last season, like both Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Eric Dier, have been tipped to leave in January after becoming fringe members of Postecoglou's new-look Spurs side.

As a result, the Lilywhites are said to have their eyes on centre-back signings and midfield men for January, with a report by CaughtOffside sharing an update involving Chelsea star Conor Gallagher. They claim Tottenham and Levy could make a "concrete" move for the Englishman if Hojbjerg ends up leaving the club.

Conor Gallagher for Chelsea

Nothing else is said beyond that, but Gallagher has become a mainstay under Mauricio Pochettino so far this season; starting all six of their league games while also ranking as their second-best performer according to WhoScored.

Former Spurs star, once speaking to Match of the Day (via The Sun), has expressed his admiration for the 23-year-old saying:

“I think he is a game-changer aswell Conor Gallagher. He’s the type of player that you bring on and he has an impact on the game. He presses, gets himself in the box and creates chances."
