Legspinner Karn Sharma extended his dominance over New Zealand A into the List A format with a five-for that helped India A take a 1-0 lead in the five-match one-day series. Karn, who had taken 16 wickets in the two four-dayers against New Zealand A, took 5 for 22 to limit the opposition to 143 in the third match in Visakhapatnam on Wednesday. Despite a top-order slump, India A completed the chase with six wickets and more than 25 overs to spare.New Zealand A had a promising start after opting to bat first, with George Worker and Colin Munro adding 39 by the eighth over. Both, however, were out within a short span and two more wickets left New Zealand A at 97 for 4. Henry Nicholls and Colin de Grandhomme attempted something of a repair job with a partnership of 37 for the fifth wicket but it took only eight overs for the rest of New Zealand A’s innings to unravel. Nicholls was dismissed for 35 in the 31st over and his wicket began a slide that saw New Zealand A lose six wickets for merely nine runs. Karn was central to this slide, taking four of the six wickets in consecutive overs, including those of Nicholls and de Grandhomme. Left-arm spinner Shahbaz Nadeem and allrounder Deepak Hooda took three wickets between them to wipe out the rest of the line-up.India A’s top three were all dismissed for single digits but Shreyas Iyer, Vijay Shankar (47 not out) and Hooda (35 not out) ensured they reached the target comfortably. Iyer, who had struck 90 in the tied match on Tuesday, made 37 off 36 before Hooda and Shankar completed the chase with a 57-run partnership.

West Ham Close To Sealing "World-Class" £30m Maestro

It has been a chaotic week for West Ham United.

Firstly, the Irons agreed a £35m deal to sign Edson Alvarez from Ajax, before reaching a £30m agreement for Manchester United’s Harry Maguire.

But most importantly, the 2023 Europa Conference League winners have also agreed a deal to sign James Ward-Prowse.

What’s the latest on James Ward-Prowse to West Ham?

According to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, the Hammers and Southampton are set to agree on a £30m deal for Ward-Prowse.

The 28-year-old is expected to sign a four-year contract and is keen to complete the move as soon as possible.

The three aforementioned signings would see Irons boss David Moyes reinvest nearly £100m of the £105m acquired from the record-breaking sale of Declan Rice.

This will be welcome information for the Hammers faithful after that gut-wrenching news that Manchester City are actively pursuing a deal to sign Lucas Paqueta.

Would James Ward-Prowse be a good signing for West Ham?

After a glorious 20-year association with the Saints, it seems that Englishman is finally set to depart to continue playing top-flight football.

When Ward-Prowse made his Premier League debut back in 2012, then-manager Nigel Adkins described the youngster as “outstanding” and his latest top-flight campaign is a testament to his everlasting consistency.

Last year, in a dismal season for Southampton, Ward-Prowse started every domestic game, was the club’s scorer and creator (nine goals and four assists), and averaged the most key passes per game (1.9).

His seismic influence was recognised by former manager Nathan Jones, who said:

“He's been absolutely world-class for me. He's one of the best technicians I've ever seen, the consistency he shows is world-class."

Ward-Prowse’s esteemed creativity and goal threat could make a worthy Paqueta deputy, should the Brazilian move to the Etihad Stadium.

The reigning Premier League Champions are yet to make a formal offer for the 25-year-old but West Ham have no intention in selling of their star assets.

Fabrizio Romano outlined that Man City began discussions over a £70m package, but this was considered insufficient.

The reputable Italian journalist later revealed that Paqueta has a release clause worth £85m in his current contract, but this is only valid from June 2024.

Nevertheless, the treble winners have already allowed Riyad Mahrez and Ilkay Gundogan to leave and could benefit from some attacking depth, so it is likely that they will use their financial muscle to try again.

Although Paqueta began life in east London slowly, he finished the term with 12 goal involvements in 41 appearances and provided the assist for Jarrod Bowen to win the club’s first European trophy since 1965.

Lucas Paqueta

Whilst Alvarez is viewed as the conventional Rice replacement, playing 139 games as a defensive midfielder, Ward-Prowse offers a different type of versatility that could see him as a deep-lying playmaker or a further advanced deputy for Paqueta.

Moyes’ new midfield set-up is also dependent on Tomas Soucek – the 28-year-old has featured in 109 of the club’s last 114 Premier League games, but a new era for the side could see the Czech shifted to a less prominent role.

Regardless of whether Paqueta stays or not, Ward-Prowse is well-equipped for different roles within the midfield and is a hugely important piece of business for the Hammers.

Hammers Reportedly End Interest In Midfield Target

West Ham United have ended their interest in James Ward-Prowse after Southampton rejected another bid, according to Alex Crook.

West Ham have been interested in the England international following the sale of Declan Rice.

Is James Ward-Prowse leaving Southampton this window?

The midfielder could leave St Mary's this summer.

The player has been the subject of plenty of interest from Premier League sides, with Fulham, Brentford, Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United, however the Hammers have been the side most interested in the 28-year-old. Southampton are resigned to the fact that their club captain is set to depart this summer, but are holding firm in their stance regarding his asking price of £40-50m.

The Hammers had an opening bid of £20m rejected by the Saints earlier in the window, with the report saying that the south coast side were "disgruntled" by the opening bid. Despite the poor opening bid, many expected that the deal would be completed, with Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth stating on the Transfer Talk Podcast:

"It looks likely he will go. West Ham have held talks with Southampton over the potential signing of James Ward-Prowse. West Ham will continue to push. No fee agreed as yet. Ward-Prowse, though, we understand he is keen to move to the London Stadium. So, I think West Ham are getting a bit of encouragement on that side of it. Personal terms, not expected to be a problem on this one."

Southampton midfielder James Ward-Prowse.

However, according to Sky Sports, following the rejection of the Hammers second bid for the midfielder, the club have reportedly moved on from the English midfielder as they have no intention of meeting the Saints asking price.

Speaking on talkSPORT, journalist Crook confirmed that early this morning the Hammers have seen a bid rejected by the Championship side, and if they are "true to their word" they will not bid for the player again:

"They have come back with an answer and, as it has been expected as we said this morning, that Southampton would hold firm in their valuation, they are holding firm. I'm told the bid was £27m up front rising to £30m with add-ons. I'm told that Southampton have said not thanks so if West Ham are true to their word, their interest in James Ward-Prowse will be over, but lets see if that was just negotiation tactics or a genuine threat"

Who can West Ham go for instead?

The Hammers do have other options that they could go to after moving on from Ward-Prowse.

One option is Manchester United's Scott McTominay, who is being considered by the Hammers according to reports. The midfielder has struggled for starts under Erik ten Hag and is free to depart this summer should the Red Devils receive a "very big offer", with current Hammers boss David Moyes reportedly a big fan, and hoping to complete a double swoop for both the Scotland international as well as Red Devils defender Harry Maguire. The United youth product is an experienced and versatile option, having made over 200 career appearances across central midfield, centre forward and central defence.

Another option is Ajax midfielder Edson Alvarez. The Mexican was reportedly close to joining German giants Borussia Dortmund earlier this window, however, that move collapsed due to the German side not wanting to pay the asking price that Ajax have set, which is reportedly between £35-40m. Alvarez is an unbelievable all-around option, with his passing numbers of 83.91 passes attempted and 88.7% passes completed putting him in the top five percent among players outside Europe's top five leagues in those categories, whilst his defensive numbers are consistently strong according to FBref.

Liverpool Want To Sign 21-Year-old Centre-Back Alongside Midfield Saga

Liverpool are interested in Sporting CP star Goncalo Inacio this summer, and a journalist from Portugal has shared news on Twitter involving the player's release clause.

Are Liverpool signing more players?

The Reds are going through one of their more dramatic summers in recent times, with business tending to be relatively low-key during Jurgen Klopp's time at the club. There have been drastic changes to Liverpool's squad, however, with Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai coming in and as many as five different midfielders leaving, including Fabinho and Jordan Henderson, who has departed for Saudi Arabia, along with Roberto Firmino.

There is also an ongoing battle with Chelsea over the signings of Brighter star Moises Caicedo and Southampton teenager Romeo Lavia, with more depth badly required in the middle of the park in 2023/24, in what remains a tense situation.

Liverpool could also do with signing a new left-sided centre-back, however – someone who can also play at left-back, in order to provide stern competition for Andy Robertson, who hasn't always looked at home in a tweaked role recently, sitter deeper to allow Trent Alexander-Arnold to step into midfield.

Sporting CP youngster Inacio is one player who has been linked with a summer move to Anfield, with the 21-year-old a highly-rated prospect who will be available if his release clause is met.

Sporting centre-back Goncalo Inacio.

Will Liverpool sign Goncalo Inacio?

Taking to Twitter, a Portuguese journalist claims that Liverpool are keen on making a move for Inacio in the near future, even reporting they are happy to pay his €45m (£38.8m) clause in the process:

"Excl: Liverpool want Goncalo Inacio from Sporting and accept to pay release clause (€45m)."

While so much focus has rightly been on Liverpool's midfield, given the changes that have taken place there since the end of last season, it is also essential that another central defender arrives, and Inacio could be the perfect option in that area of the pitch.

Not only is he a young player with an extremely high ceiling, but his price tag would also be relatively cheap in the current market because of the release clause, acting as an added bonus. Last season, he completed 90% of his passes in the Primeira Liga, showcasing his ability in possession, and he also averaged 1.9 clearances per game.

Inacio has been hailed as a "complete" centre-back by football talent scout Jacek Kulig, and at just 21 years of age he is already a genuine key man and leader for Sporting, winning the league title with the Portuguese giants back in 2021.

The Portugal international would come in as an immediate improvement on both Joel Matip and Joe Gomez, neither of whom look like the players they used to be, and he would also put pressure on Robertson for minutes – particularly the latter, who hasn't always found it easy to stay fit in a Liverpool shirt.

Snapping up Inacio would be another massive step in the right direction for the Reds this summer, further suggesting they could mount a Premier League title bid, but at least one top-quality midfielder is needed for that to happen, if not two.

Markram quickly puts near-miss behind him

Aiden Markram fell close to the line as his maiden century approached last week, but made no mistake second time around

Firdose Moonda06-Oct-2017Aiden Markram has developed a habit of making his girlfriend, Nicole, cry.Last week, when he was run out for 97 on debut, his long-time partner was spotted in the Senwes Park stands wiping away tears of disappointment. This week, when Markram banished 97 with a swat to fine leg, there were emotions on show again – but this time of joy.”She knows how much it means to and that’s probably why,” Markram said. It’s been a big week for the young couple. Between Markram’s South Africa debut and his first major milestone, he also turned 23. Next week, he will return to his franchise Titans, which he captains, a vastly more experienced man than the one who started the season. Although a young skipper, Markram will take a lot of lessons with him from his first international experience. “I am still a young guy and I have never been one to stamp my authority on environments. But I will take what I have learnt and share it with the guys.”Lesson number one has been not to underestimate anyone, especially not Bangladesh. Though their attack has barely threatened, Markram was full of compliments. “They were at us quite a bit. The score says they didn’t bowl that well. I don’t think that’s the case. It’s a quick outfield and all of that reflected in the score,” he said. “They had a plan to bowl short. As comfortable as you can be on the short ball, it’s never a great thing to keep facing. They bowled with great energy, good intensity.”Markram batted with even more energy and intensity, almost as though he was trying to make up for not reaching the milestone last week, by scooting passed it when his chance came again. He admitted it was special to have the man who played a part in his run out then, Dean Elgar, to be in the middle for his achievement.”It hasn’t quite hit home yet. I think it will at some stage tonight. It’s quite a proud moment for me, especially after last week,” Markram said. “Today I had a little bit of extra focus in the 90s. Dean was with me. And he said it’s a special moment to have shared with me. It was nice for him to have been at the other end.”If you look at the replays closely, there may have been a glint in Elgar’s eyes too.

Liverpool: Reds Among Clubs Interested In Piero Hincapie

Alongside solving their midfield crisis this summer, Liverpool are reportedly targeting another central defender before the transfer window slams shut in just under two weeks.

As things stand, Jurgen Klopp has Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip, Ibrahima Konate, and Joe Gomez to call upon.

The German could yet welcome one more centre-back, however, with the Reds reportedly turning their attention to Bayer Leverkusen.

What's the latest on Piero Hincapie to Liverpool?

Amid their search for a centre-back, Liverpool are one of the clubs interested in making a move for Bayer Leverkusen defender Piero Hincapie, according to Dominik Schneider of Fussball Transfers.

The Ecuadorian is currently out injured, but is on course to return at the end of August, potentially making him available for a move to Anfield, before the window closes.

The Premier League giants may have to act fast to secure Hincapie's signature, however, given that West Ham United and RB Leipzig are also reportedly interested in making their moves for the Leverkusen man this summer.

West Ham, of course, just saw their deal to sign Manchester United's Harry Maguire reportedly break down, meaning that their search for a central defender remains ongoing.

Meanwhile, as per Schneider, Hincapie is Leipzig's backup option if they fail to sign Lyon's Castello Lukeba this summer. With that said, it looks set to be a busy end to the window for the Leverkusen centre-back.

Should Liverpool sign Piero Hincapie?

Bayer Leverkusen's Piero Hincapie

As Matip enters the final year of his Liverpool contract, welcoming 21-year-old Hincapie wouldn't exactly go amiss at Anfield. Swapping an ageing Matip for the far younger Ecuador international would represent an incredibly smart piece of business for the Reds.

It remains to be seen just how much Leverkusen will demand for their defender, but, according to Transfermarkt, Hincapie is currently worth €35m (£30m), potentially making a deal feasible for Liverpool in the coming weeks.

The praise that he has received speaks for itself, with former Leverkusen manager Gerardo Seoane saying, via the official Bundesliga website: "We knew he had the potential, but the way he's rising to the challenge and coping with the intensity levels is really impressive. We're pleasantly surprised with how he's performing in the Bundesliga and Europe."

Read the latest Liverpool transfer news HERE…

The club's sporting director also had positive things to say. Simon Rolfes said: "Piero’s signing 18 months ago was an investment in the future, back then he was a talented central defender with really big potential.

"He became a key performer for our Werkself a long time ago, he has shown his international quality in the Bundesliga, in the Champions League and recently at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Piero is one of the key elements in the team who we can count on to help us achieve ambitious targets in the next few years."

So, with that said, everything points towards a player on the up, and one that Liverpool are right to be targeting.

Of course, time is running out in the summer transfer window, but anything could still happen, making Hincapie's future an interesting one to keep an eye on.

Gayle touts 'tell-all' story on Twitter for $300,000

Chris Gayle, the West Indies batsman, has announced that he intends to cash in after winning his defamation case with Fairfax Media last week, by selling his tell-all story to the highest bidder for at least US$300,000.Gayle successfully sued Fairfax, the publishers of the Sydney Morning Herald and the Age, following the publication of a series of articles in 2016, alleging that he had exposed himself to a female masseuse during West Indies’ World Cup campaign in Australia the previous year.In a series of posts on Twitter, Gayle declared that what went on behind the scenes of the court case was “like a movie”, adding that he believed there had been an agenda to get him banned from playing cricket.”I have a very interested successful story to tell!!” Gayle wrote. “It can be an exclusive 60mins interview or y’all just have to wait on my next book!”It’s about what transpired in court and behind the scenes in Australia, how they went to bigger heads to get me ban…”How they want to use me as a scapegoat over a interview-I’ll tell you what I do every day after court, believe me, when I break this down to y’all it will be like a movie!”He added that there would be “no holding back” and that he had been ready to “fight until my last breath” to clear his name. With 18 T20 centuries to his name, more than twice as many as any other batsman in the format, Gayle has established a reputation as one of the most sought-after players in T20 leagues the world over. However, he has not played in Australia’s Big Bash League since 2016, after igniting a sexism row by appearing to proposition a female reporter during a live interview. He was fined Aus$10,000 (US$7660) by his team, Melbourne Renegades, for “inappropriate conduct”.
