Burnley Transfer News: Sunderland Plan To Fend Off Jack Clarke Interest

Burnley have been eager to try and sign Jack Clarke this summer, and Black Cats boss Tony Mowbray has spoken to The Sunderland Echo about the winger's future with Sunderland.

Is Jack Clarke staying at Sunderland?

The forward has had plenty of interest in his services this summer after an excellent 2022/23 campaign for the Black Cats. Having bagged nine goals with eleven assists in 44 league starts for the club, and it represented his best ever goal contribution haul over the course of his career.

Having arrived at the Stadium of Light on an initial loan deal whilst they were in League One, he then made the switch permanent as they sealed a spot in the second tier. That campaign in the third tier, he could manage only one goal and two assists, but was also started on just nine occasions. It was enough to convince Sunderland though to bring him in full-time – and that gamble has since paid off as his end product has skyrocketed to match his obvious talent on the ball.

It's led to Burnley, amongst other sides, trying to snap up the attacker on a deal this summer. Reports have suggested that the Clarets are currently the only club making official bids for the star and whilst those have been snubbed so far, it doesn't mean that the newly-promoted Premier League side won't come back in with more bids.

Are Burnley signing Jack Clarke?

Now though, speaking to The Sunderland Echo, who confirmed the Clarets have bid, Black Cats boss Tony Mowbray has spoken out about the player after a pre-season game and has declared that Clarke is happy to stay at Sunderland for now – but refused to rule out a definite stay at the club for the winger this summer.

He mentioned that the forward is currently "working hard" and is happy to stay with the Championship side but also added that "if he moves, he moves".

Mowbray said: "My conversation with him – and again, I don't get overly involved with what goes on behind the scenes. He said to me he loves playing here, he's in no rush to leave but if that's what pans out, he's a footballer, if he moves he moves. He's not stamping his feet or being petulant or creating a problem in training. He's working hard and enjoys his football."

Whilst Burnley are keen to try and sort out an agreement, Clarke has actually yet to try his luck in the Premier League. His only first-team football so far has come in the Championship, with the 22-year-old relying on stints with Leeds, Stoke, QPR and now Sunderland for gametime.

Anyone who has watched Clarke in action though has praised his ability, especially for Sunderland in the last campaign. Journalist and Black Cats fan Josh Bunting stated that the winger was "dynamite" during a performance for the Black Cats and it shows how highly he is viewed and how important he is for the second tier outfit.

Losing the attacker this summer would be a blow to their play-off chances then – but it would be a huge boost to Burnley if they could sign him and help him make the step up to the top tier.

Stokes, Unadkat lift Rising Pune to No. 2

Ben Stokes’ all-round efforts and a five-wicket haul from Jaydev Unadkat moved Rising Pune Supergiants to second place with a 12-run win against Sunrisers Hyderabad

The Report by Karthik Krishnaswamy06-May-2017
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details5:10

Bangar: Rising Pune have fitted their jigsaw

Ben Stokes and Jaydev Unadkat have been pivotal to Rising Pune Supergiant’s surge up the IPL points table, and their efforts on a dry, up-and-down pitch at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium led them to second with a 12-run win against Sunrisers Hyderabad. It was Sunrisers’ first home defeat of the season.Stokes energised a moribund Pune innings with 39 off 25 balls, and his innings, along with 31 off 21 from MS Dhoni, gave them a total of 148 and a fighting chance. Then, bowling cross-seam and extracting inconsistent bounce, Stokes took three key wickets – Shikhar Dhawan, Kane Williamson and David Warner – to ensure Sunrisers never took control of the chase. They were never entirely out of it either, though, and when Unadkat began the last over, they needed 13 runs with four wickets in hand. Incredibly, Unadkat bowled a maiden took a hat-trick to end with figures of 5 for 30.Won’t concede boundaries, won’t take catchesThe first big moment of the game was a bit of quality fielding. Rahul Tripathi, flicking Ashish Nehra to the left of short fine-leg, set off immediately. Perhaps he didn’t factor in Bipul Sharma’s left-handedness. Bipul moved quickly to the ball, took aim, and hit direct at the striker’s end with Tripathi not even close to regaining his ground. It was the only bit of quality fielding in the Powerplay, though; Bipul dropped a sitter at the same position to let off Steven Smith, Siddarth Kaul did not move at mid-on when Ajinkya Rahane spooned a possible catch towards him, and Bhuvneshwar Kumar, diving to his left at short fine leg, gave Smith a second life.Maybe it was deliberate from Sunrisers, for apart from a Rahane six over long-on, off Moises Henriques, there were no boundaries in the first 10 overs. There was little attacking intent as well, with Rahane and Smith content to milk leg-side singles for most part. After 10 overs, Rising Pune were 51 for 2.Getty Images

Stokes, Dhoni and the power differenceSmith ended up facing 39 balls without hitting a four or a six. At the post-match presentation, he noted the difficulty of timing the ball, and praised the contributions of his team’s “stronger boys”. Stokes was one of them – he hit three sixes in his 39 – and MS Dhoni the other. Before this game, against the quicker bowlers, Dhoni had scored 75 off 35 balls when they had pitched it full or short, but only 43 off 52 balls off the in-between lengths. Initially, the Sunrisers seamers kept pitching it on a good length or just short of a good length, and Dhoni was batting on 10 off 14 balls at the 18-overs mark. Uncharacteristically, it was Bhuvneshwar Kumar who lost his length, feeding him two short balls and an overpitched wide ball in the 19th over, and Dhoni spanked them for 4, 6 and 6.The cross-seam masterclassWhen Stokes came into the attack, Sunrisers were 25 for 0 after two expensive overs from Unadkat, who kept providing width to Dhawan and Warner, and two quiet overs from Washington Sundar, who kept denying them width. Stokes struck with his first ball and his third, both legcutters. One, bowled cross-seam, hit the shiny side, skidded low, and bowled Dhawan. The other, hitting the seam, bounced extra and kissed Williamson’s glove.Giving himself room against Washington in the next over, Warner hit the offspinner for three fours, but Stokes made sure Sunrisers wouldn’t claw things back too quickly, only conceding two off his second over.Unadkat ends Sunrisers fightbackTaking Stokes’ cue, Shardul Thakur and Daniel Christian mixed up slower balls with cross-seam deliveries, and in tandem with Imran Tahir kept Warner and Yuvraj Singh relatively quiet, with the odd boundary keeping the teams neck-and-neck. Stokes returned in the 13th over and derived extra bounce again; Warner failing to keep down a slash, picked out sweeper cover. When Tahir bowled Henriques with a googly, Sunrisers needed 53 from 36.By the time Unadkat came back to bowl the 18th over, the equation read 32 off 18, with Yuvraj on 47. Both Yuvraj and Naman Ojha fell in that over, caught by sweeper cover, failing to generate enough power against Unadkat’s slower ball.Three twos in Stokes’ final over left Sunrisers needing 13 off 6. They would end up getting 0 for 3 off those six balls, their lower order finding no way of dealing with Unadkat’s slower ball. He kept pitching them at a length that was too short to hit down the ground and not short enough to pull. Bipul Sharma, Rashid Khan and Bhuvneshwar Kumar all holed out, one after another, getting far more elevation and far less distance than they desired, and what should have been a tense final over turned into a rout.

Arsenal: Edu Could Now Axe High-Earning Star

Arsenal winger Nicolas Pepe "will certainly" leave the Emirates Stadium "soon" as the Gunners have shown to be "ruthless", says reporter Charles Watts.

Who will leave Arsenal?

The Gunners have been very busy this transfer window, having spent north of £200 million already and further additions haven't been ruled out.

Germany international winger Kai Havertz put pen to paper on a £65 million move from Chelsea, while Arsenal eventually confirmed the club-record signing of midfielder Declan Rice in a £105 million deal.

Former Ajax defender and Netherlands international Jurrien Timber is now an Arsenal player as well, strengthening Mikel Arteta's ranks significantly ahead of the 2023/2024 Premier League season.

However, to balance the books, certain stars need to be ejected from the squad. Thomas Partey, who has attracted interest from Saudi sides in the Middle East, is being repeatedly linked with an Arsenal exit while their USA international Folarin Balogun can also leave for around £50 million.

Pepe, who was once Arsenal's club-record acquisition after his £72m move from Nice in 2019, is certainly on the chopping block as journalist Watts explains to TEAMtalk.

“He’s got one year left on his contract and he’s not part of Arsenal’s plans. It’s very, very clear," said Watts.

“He’s on such high wages; they’ve ended up cancelling contracts with a lot of those big name players from that era at the club. Pepe is probably the last of them who they haven’t managed to deal with.

“[Sead] Kolasinac, [Shkodran] Mustafi, as well as [Pierre-Emerick] Aubameyang and Mesut Ozil. They’ve shown they can be ruthless.

“Edu’s talked about it before. He’d much rather cancel a contract than have someone on big wages just sitting around for a season because he says that does a squad no good at all. He’s gone on record as saying that.

“It would not surprise me if that happened which seems remarkable when you think this is Arsenal’s club-record signing, a £72m signing.

“We’ll have to wait and see but I think Arsenal, from their point of view, they would love someone from Saudi Arabia becoming interested in Pepe.

"We shall wait and see what happens but one thing’s for sure: he’s got no long term future at Arsenal. He’ll certainly be gone soon. He’s one of the highest earners, probably in the top five.”

How good is Nicolas Pepe?

Despite some injury problems on loan at Nice last season, Pepe displayed moments of real quality – chipping in with six goals over his temporary spell (WhoScored).

Statistically, he was actually one of the Ligue 1 side's most potent threats in the final third – completing more successful take-ons per 90 than any other player in their squad (WhoScored).

The 28-year-old also ranked in Nice's top two for both attempts at goal and key passes completed on average – making him a credible candidate for any side who wish to add firepower.

After-all, there's a reason Arteta's side once smashed their transfer record to bring him to north London.

However, his salary could be an issue for any interested side, so the player himself may need to take a considerable pay cut on his reported £140,000-per-week wages.

Liverpool "Exploring" Deal To Steal Club’s "Shining Star"

Liverpool are 'exploring' a deal to sign Southampton midfielder Romeo Lavia and will turn their attention towards targeting a central defender once another body in the middle of the park has been secured, according to journalist Ben Jacobs.

How much will Romeo Lavia cost?

Sky Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg has issued an update on Liverpool's pursuit of Lavia on Twitter, stating: "Talks between Liverpool & Lavia are concrete and ongoing. Understand there is no agreement in terms of salary conditions yet. As reported: His price tag is around £50m. Klopp wants him! Very press resistant player – even in high pressure situations, he loses the ball only once out of 10 times."

Football Insider follow up reports on Liverpool's interest in Lavia and claim that the Reds are 'convinced' that Lavia would favour a move to Anfield over other potential destinations this summer.

Arsenal and Chelsea are also keen on the Belgium international alongside La Liga holders Barcelona; however, the latter are expected to be priced out of a move for Lavia.

Manchester City hold a buyback clause that they inserted in Lavia's deal conditions when he left for Southampton in 2022 worth £40 million, though it doesn't activate until 2024, enabling rival suitors to steal a march on them this off-season, as per Fabrizio Romano.

The Citizens have asked to be kept aware of Lavia's situation and Manchester United along with Newcastle United are monitoring developments, according to 90min.

Liverpool have already taken steps to reshape their midfield and have brought in Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai from Brighton & Hove Albion and RB Leipzig, respectively.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, journalist Jacobs has confirmed that Liverpool are 'exploring' a deal to sign Lavia from Southampton.

Jacobs stated: "Liverpool and potentially Arsenal have looked in the past on Lavia too. They're certainly exploring the deal. I think from Liverpool's point of view, between now and the end of the window, it's very, very likely that they'll still bring in one more midfielder and then they'll turn their attention to centre-back as well."

Is Romeo Lavia good?

Lavia, who has been a "shining star" for Southampton, is a very good young midfielder that has the potential to develop into a Premier League star with the correct stewardship to aid his growth as a player.

Last term, the 19-year-old was a rare bright spark for Southampton during a campaign where they finished bottom of the pile, registering one goal and one assist in 34 senior appearances across all competitions, as per Transfermarkt.

Making his presence known in midfield, Lavia excelled in doing the dirty work for his side and completed around 2.1 tackles per match in the English top flight, according to WhoScored.

Combining successful challenges with interceptions, Lavia won 93 in total over the course of the campaign, illustrating his insatiable hunger to regain possession and turn over possession, as per FBRef.

Of course, Lavia can still go up a few gears in the next few seasons of his career and a move to a big club would likely equip him with the tools to succeed at the elite level.

Klopp will hope to sell Lavia his vision that Liverpool is the place to do that and inherit what could be the final piece of his midfield jigsaw.

Pay dispute not an 'excuse' for early exit – Lehmann

Australia’s coach Darren Lehmann has denied that the ongoing pay dispute involving Cricket Australia and the nation’s cricketers played any role in his team’s early exit from the Champions Trophy. Having had their first two group matches washed out, Australia needed to win against England on Saturday to progress, but instead suffered a 40-run defeat via the DLS method.Australia will now head home to begin preparations for their tour of Bangladesh later this year, but they will do so against the backdrop of employment uncertainty. CA and the Australian Cricketers’ Association have until the end of this month to reach a consensus on a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) or risk an ugly situation in which players may find themselves uncontracted. The pay standoff has been going on for many months now and Australia’s vice-captain David Warner last week expressed his disappointment that CA had distributed an information video stating their case for MoU changes while Australia’s players should have been focusing on the Champions Trophy.Warner said at the time: “If CA were trying to help us win, I don’t think they’d be trying to release videos like that”. However, after the loss to England in Birmingham on Saturday, Lehmann said he did not believe the pay dispute had played any part in Australia failing to progress to the Champions Trophy semi-finals.”No excuses from our point of view on the MoU,” Lehmann said. “That’s going on behind the scenes – it can probably come to the forefront now that we’ve finished. They’ll get down to that and sort that out. No excuses from our end on the MoU.”It’s always there. It’s the elephant in the room. It’s always going to be talked about. But from a playing point of view, you’re out there, surely you’re not thinking about the MoU when you’re batting or bowling. I wouldn’t think that would have affected the players’ performance at all.”Australia’s preparation for the tournament was not helped by a washed out warm-up game, and their first two matches against New Zealand and Bangladesh were also rained out – they were on track to beat Bangladesh in the second game when it started pouring heavily, but New Zealand had the upper hand in the first match. Lehmann said Australia’s preparation had been adequate, but they had not been up to the task in the critical match.”We were just outplayed,” Lehmann said. “We were probably 30 or so short with the bat. We needed some of those guys to go on and get hundreds. [Aaron] Finch and [Steven] Smith played well, but we needed the top four to get a hundred. And then we bowled pretty poorly after the rain break. Disappointing result.”Just disappointing, I think we lost 5 for 15 at one stage. Credit to England, they bowled well, but I think we helped them a bit in the back end of our innings. We were sitting reasonably well at one stage but once you lose wickets you’re always in a bit of trouble. I think it was 4 for 240 odd when Maxi got out. You’d hope to get close to 300, but we didn’t.”Australia’s cause was not helped by a let-off for England captain Eoin Morgan, who was dropped down the leg side by Matthew Wade early in the chase. Morgan was on 12 at the time, and pressed on to make 87.”It was disappointing. He should grab them, but nobody means to drop them, either,” Lehmann said. “Disappointing part of the game, especially at that time. But again, they played really well. Morgan and Stokes were very good today.”Australia’s own batting set-up did not work as they hoped, with the addition of Moises Henriques at No.4 proving ineffective. Henriques scored 18 and 17 in his two innings in the tournament, and his presence in the side meant there was no room for fellow allrounder Marcus Stoinis, who struck a stunning 146 not out in an ODI in Auckland earlier this year.”We’ll have to sit back and have a look at that, moving forward, what we do there,” Lehmann said. “Marcus was very good in New Zealand so it’s a tough selection call. You take advice from everyone and you make a call and the skipper was quite keen for him to bat four. He [Henriques] looked good but probably didn’t capitalise.”Lehmann said Australia would need to find a way to return to the “brave” style of play that they displayed at the 2015 World Cup. It is an approach that he believes England and New Zealand have now adopted, and Lehmann bristled somewhat at the suggestion that Australia could learn something from the way England and New Zealand were currently playing in the ODI format.”I think England and New Zealand took the way we played in the last World Cup,” he said. “We played with bravery and we smashed every side, bar obviously New Zealand in Auckland. They’re starting to take the way we played, not vice-versa. When they win a World Cup, then we can take the way they play.”We certainly want to get back to playing brave cricket. I don’t think we were brave enough or smart enough in this tournament. I would have liked us to play with a lot more freedom or bravery.”

Leeds Can Copy Adams Success With "Extraordinary" £11m-rated Gem

Leeds United could be set to repeat a recent transfer success of theirs, should they choose to once again sign from the Bundesliga.

Is Alexander Nubel leaving Bayern Munich?

With Daniel Farke's summer revamp having been kicked off by the signing of Ethan Amapdu, it now finally feels like the 49ers will start to exert their influence on their new club and help forge a brighter future for this struggling giant.

Dropping into the Championship last season was a gut punch to their reputation, having only spent three years back in the Premier League. However, it already seems like the new owners are planning for an instant return, with a fresh report coming from Sky Sports Germany to reaffirm the Whites' interest in Bayern Munich goalkeeper Alexander Nubel.

Whilst VfB Stuttgart seem in the lead for his signature, the report does not discount the pull of the Yorkshire team, who remain in the race despite having yet to make an offer.

The German shot-stopper is valued at €13m (£11m) by FootballTransfers.

How good is Alexander Nubel?

Having spent the last two seasons on loan at AS Monaco, as playtime at his parent club was limited given the legendary status of Manuel Neuer, the 26-year-old has proven himself more than capable of starring as a first-choice option.

After all, his 6.93 average rating last term in Ligue 1 is indicative of this, with his 71% save success rate feeding into the mammoth 3.7 stops he averages per game, via Sofascore. A tally of 24 clean sheets across his 97 appearances for the French club is an admirable one.

However, his talents reach far beyond his ability to keep the ball out of his net, as Germany's U21 coach Klaus Thomforde claimed: "You can only speak highly of Alex – he's an incredibly talented goalkeeper, with the world at his feet. He's got an extraordinary footballing ability, but he's also very down to earth and is a great lad."

In once again returning to the Bundesliga for a signing, similar to how they did by prying Tyler Adams from RB Leipzig, the Elland Road outfit could be set to repeat old successes that would all but assure their promotion next season.

tyler-adams

After all, the USMNT international proved to be an instant hit in the engine room despite relegation, having provided a much-needed injection of pace, dynamism and defensive steel.

This was outlined through his statistics, as he posted 1.5 interceptions, 3.7 tackles, one clearance and one key pass per game, whilst maintaining an 82% pass accuracy too, via Sofascore.

His ability to break up and dictate the play was impressive, as his 6.98 average rating in the Premier League made him the club's best performer of those who had started five or more games.

Sky Sports journalist Tim Thornton sought to support this, noting back in September:

"He's done really, really well. He knows his game. When he came in, he said ‘I'm not going to be the man to replace Kalvin Phillips, I’m my own man.’ There are similarities in the way he plays with Phillips in the way that he breaks play up and screens the defence. But he's also very different in a lot of ways. So he's done brilliantly."

Given the immediate success the 24-year-old garnered, translating his form from Germany to England in a flash, perhaps Nubel could seek to emulate this switch and help alleviate an area of huge weakness for Leeds.

SCG curator Tom Parker steps down

The long-serving SCG curator Tom Parker will step down later this year, just a few months before Australia’s home Ashes series

ESPNcricinfo staff21-Jun-2017The long-serving SCG curator Tom Parker will step down later this year, just a few months before Australia’s home Ashes series.Parker has spent 20 years in charge of the SCG pitch and turf, and will be joined in his exit by Allianz Stadium curator Michael Finch, with the SCG Trust planning to bring both the cricket and soccer venues together under one team of groundstaff.”It’s been a privilege to work at this magnificent ground,” Parker said. “There are certainly some special moments that I’ll look back on in coming years but the opportunity to call the SCG home for the past two decades is what I’m most proud of.”SCG Trust chairman Tony Shepherd said: “Tom has been a key figure in the ground’s history and has played a huge part in its success over the years. On behalf of my fellow Trustees I would like to thank him, both professionally and personally, for the commitment he has shown to the SCG.”Despite Parker’s achievements over the past two decades, he did face criticism in 2015, when a Sheffield Shield match at the SCG was abandoned due to what was deemed an unsafe outfield. After several players slipped over, the match officials decided to abandon the match, a decision that neither Parker nor the SCG Trust believed was necessary.

Leeds Could Secure Farke’s New Isak In £66k-p/w "Machine"

Leeds United could be set to hand Daniel Farke a new man to spearhead his reign, who bears a striking resemblance to an old star of his…

Who is Yussef Poulsen?

The latest on that proposed move came early last week, as it was reported that the Whites were interested in a swoop for RB Leipzig's Yussuf Poulsen.

Standing at 6 foot 4, the hulking striker has endured a largely profligate career but boasts a stunning work rate that could make him an asset to a new-look side.

Having kickstarted his tenure in his homeland, the 29-year-old moved to Germany in 2013 and has never looked back. He has been a mainstay throughout the Red Bull revolution of the club, starting when they were in the third tier and progressing up into the Bundesliga.

He could now be set to finally depart, moving to Elland Road to help earn another promotion. The speedster has just one year left on his £66k-per-week deal.

Farke will likely notice the physical similarities the lanky front-man shares with Alexander Isak, who the German boss managed briefly during his time with Borussia Dortmund's reserve team.

How many goals did Alexander Isak score last season?

Both of these men have come a long way since their paths last crossed, as the coach has since led Norwich City to two Championship promotions, whilst the Sweden international has become Newcastle United's record purchase, joining from Real Sociedad.

Last year marked his first in English football, with the gangly forward acclimatising to its physicality well. He would notch 10 goals in just 22 Premier League appearances, impressing through what was an injury-hit campaign.

Although he likely is a far more technically-superior asset, given he has also starred from the wing, Poulsen has also shown a similar turn of pace to rival this dynamism, clocking a 21.2 mph top speed in the Bundesliga just five years ago. That has since dropped to a still-strong 18.95 mph.

alexander-isak

However, his 23-year-old counterpart showcases that youthful exuberance well, given how the 6 foot 4 Magpies ace ranks against other strikers across Europe. He sits in the top 7% for successful take-ons per 90, whilst also being in the top 5% for blocks made per 90, via FBref.

It is such solid defensive work rate that truly brings the two even closer together, with the RB Leipzig man having been lauded by teammate Willi Orban for such a tireless attitude: "With or without the ball he's a machine. And he does an incredible amount of work for us."

Boasting 68 caps for his country too, the experience he would bring to Yorkshire would be phenomenal.

Not to mention that he does know where the back of the net is, although he might not find it with as much regularity as he would like.

Just last season saw him score just four goals in all competitions, and the year before a further six in the Bundesliga alone. However, it is his mere physicality that would prove to be a huge asset, especially in a league as physically demanding as the Championship.

Although their time together was short-lived, Farke could still seek to reimagine his relationship with Isak by signing Poulsen this summer.

Liverpool Turned Down By "Monster" Midfielder

Liverpool have reportedly been turned down by Fiorentina midfielder Sofyan Amrabat, who has agreed personal terms with Premier League rivals Manchester United this summer instead.

Who is signing Sofyan Amrabat?

Amrabat has been heavily linked with a move to England ahead of the 2023/24 season after entering the final 12 months of his current Fiorentina contract.

The 26-year-old has been linked with moves to Manchester United and Aston Villa, whereas the Reds were thought to be showing an interest towards the end of 2022.

It was reported in December that the Morocco international was top of Jurgen Klopp’s midfield wishlist and that the player was keen on a move to Anfield at the time.

However, as we know, Liverpool have since bolstered their midfield by bringing in Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai from Brighton and RB Leipzig. Despite this, it looks as if Amrabat has remained of interest on Merseyside, with Liverpool recently attempting to make a last-ditch offer.

The Metro relayed reports from Italy in the last 48 hours regarding Liverpool and a late move for Amrabat. It is claimed that Fiorentina will accept offers in the region of £25m for the midfielder as they look to balance their books.

The Reds are believed to have come forward and offered Amrabat a move to Anfield in recent days, however, he has turned the club down as he has agreed personal terms with Manchester United.

Who else do Liverpool want to sign?

It doesn’t look as if Amrabat will be turning out for Liverpool next season, and he could have been a shrewd addition after an impressive 12 months.

Hailed as a "monster" by broadcaster Carlo Garganese, Amrabat was praised by former England manager Fabio Capello for his displays at last year's World Cup in Qatar which saw Morocco reach the semi-finals, with the Italian describing Amrabat as the 'Gennaro Gattuso of Morocco'.

"If I have to name one name, besides the well-known Hakim Ziyech and Achraf Hakimi, it would be Amrabat. He is essential for balance and a great runner. I read that he covered more than fourteen kilometres against Spain. I see him as the Gennaro Gattuso of Morocco."

Liverpool appear to be after a new No.6 even with Fabinho's proposed move to Saudi Arabia being up in the air, and it seems as if their attention is also on Southampton midfielder Romeo Lavia.

The Reds have even had an opening £40m offer turned down for the Belgian, with the Saints holding out for £50m, so it seems as if those at Anfield are looking for another marquee signing.

Amrabat may have ended up costing half of Lavia’s asking price, but unfortunately for Liverpool, it looks as if he has his eyes on a move to Old Trafford, where Champions League football is on offer for the upcoming campaign.

It will be interesting to see who ends up joining Mac Allister and Szoboszlai in midfield next season, and who knows, if Lavia does end up joining, Klopp could have a completely new first-choice midfield three to pick from.
