Arsenal Urged To Sign £80k-p/w Rival Player

Presenter Terry Flewers has said on The Football Terrace that Arsenal could land Mason Mount as their next Martin Odegaard even if he's not wanted by all supporters.

What's the latest on Arsenal and Mason Mount?

It appears the Gunners are in line for a busy summer with Bayer Leverkusen hoping to land Granit Xhaka while West Ham United captain Declan Rice could be signed for big money.

Another name to add to the mix is Chelsea midfielder Mount. Indeed, the player has rejected contract offers from the Blues and so could depart soon with Arsenal discussing the Englishman as a potential target.

As a player who stars for a rival London club – and even divides his own fans – many Gooners might not be keen on this deal for the £80k-p/w man.

Flewers seems to think that but he believes this could be a good deal to get done regardless of what the fanbase may feel.

He told The Football Terrace (1:14:06): “The way I'm seeing Gooners going "no" to Mason Mount, there's a part of me that just thinks will history repeat itself and him be like an Odegaard.

"He was someone that Gooners didn't want, as an example."

He continued: "In the summer, most Arsenal fans online picked Richarlison over Gabriel Jesus. Now I'm not saying you don't need more than Gabriel Jesus, but out of the two, one has been a resounding success – comparatively to a guy that's been booked more times for taking his shirt off than he's scored goals."

Did Arsenal fans slam the signing of Odegaard?

Flewers is certainly right in claiming that some Arsenal supporters haven't always been right with their opinions on new incomings.

For instance, there was a major backlash online when the club announced the signing of goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, with the player saying: "I saw the backlash.

Aaron Ramsdale and Mikel Arteta

"That’s when I made the decision to turn comments off, notifications off for people I don’t follow on Instagram and Twitter."

But seeing as Odegaard, Jesus, and Ramsdale have all been regulars for Mikel Arteta this season as they pushed for a Premier League title, it's safe to say those deals have come good even if there may have been doubt regarding those deals initially in some sections of the fanbase.

With that in mind, if the club do decide to chase and sign the £80k-per-week Mount from Chelsea this summer, the fanbase certainly shouldn’t jump to any damning conclusions before at least seeing him turn up in an Arsenal shirt first.

Arsenal: Media Buzz Over "Excellent News" Out Of North London

Members of the media have expressed their delight as Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale pens a new deal at the Emirates Stadium.

What’s the latest Arsenal contract news?

The Gunners and manager Mikel Arteta currently have a few first teamers heading into the final year of their respective deals, with Bukayo Saka, William Saliba, Jorginho, Rob Holding, Granit Xhaka and Mohamed Elneny all falling into that bracket.

Arsenal talks have been held over extended deals for both Saka and Saliba, according to reports, but Arteta’s side are reportedly willing to let Xhaka leave as Bayer Leverkusen push for a deal.

Tying down the likes of Saka and Saliba is imperative given just how crucial they have been for Arsenal this season, but claims suggest real progress has been made in regards to the former.

The England international is apparently set to sign a new deal, but as Arsenal wait to announce that news, the Gunners have at least managed to officially agree fresh terms for Ramsdale.

Aaron Ramsdale for Arsenal

The 25-year-old has been a key figure and Arsenal have rewarded him with a new four-year contract which doubles his wages to around £120,000-per-week.

Members of the media have heralded Arsenal for the move, with both Piers Morgan and Daily Mirror journalist John Cross saying this on Twitter:

Arsenal journalist Adrià Jiménez Muñoz also praised the club’s announcement video as “wonderful”, with Rwandan Sports Journalist Rigoga Ruth calling it the “best deal” for Arteta.

Who is Aaron Ramsdale?

The former Sheffield United keeper put pen to paper on a move to Arsenal in 2021 and hasn’t looked back since – being praised for his impressive 2022/2023 season in particular.

Ramsdale is currently repaying every penny of the £30 million paid to sign him two years ago, having featured in every single game of Arsenal’s title race (WhoScored).

Still just 25, the shot-stopper could well be Arteta’s number one for years to come, and that certainly seems the case off the back of his new and improved deal.

Cloudy outlook for Yorkshire as Berg tips contest

“Don’t look down, look up” goes the old Yorkshire adage about whether to bat or bowl first at Headingley. A few hundred miles south at the Ageas Bowl the proverb is ever-more appropriate, as overhead conditions appear to be shaping the game at Hampshire’s ground with increasing regularity.Upon winning the toss in this crucial match, with repercussions for the top and bottom of the Championship table, Yorkshire captain Andrew Gale looked up, saw a cloudless blue sky and opted to bat. With the two most recent first-innings scores at this ground being 637 for 7 and 548 for 6 Hampshire would have been forgiven for preparing themselves for another long stint in the field, having last week been run ragged for 137.4 overs in their most recent Championship match at Taunton. In a season in which fortune has frequently frowned on Hampshire, with injuries and illness robbing them of some of their best players, they could probably hardly believe their luck when after just 20 minutes of play, in which Yorkshire’s openers had looked relatively untroubled, the sky was suddenly choked by dense and leaden clouds. Five minutes later the floodlights were on, a couple of balls jagged sharply past the outside edge and the whole feeling of the occasion had been transformed.

‘Family comes first’ – Gillespie

Jason Gillespie has reiterated that his decision to leave his position as Yorkshire head coach was due to a desire to spend more time with his family.
“This decision hasn’t come around as quickly as it may have seemed. It’s been in the pipeline for a little while,” Gillespie said. “I didn’t want to make any snap decisions but considering all things I’m sure it is the right time. Family is the most important thing and the brutal reality is that seven or eight months away from the family just doesn’t work. And that’s just the honest truth. It was a difficult decision to stand down because I love it.
“I feel that we have made some great strides and there is more for this group of players to achieve but it’s time for someone else to take the team further forward.
“My main job is as a husband and a father. Cricket’s my hobby and my second job so to speak. I have to be true to that, and that’s why I’ve made this decision.”

What followed was an engrossingly competitive day that ebbed and flowed as readily as the clouds rolled in and out, in which ball dominated bat for large swathes of it and ended with Hampshire in a decidedly better position than perhaps even they would have envisaged at 11am.If Hampshire are indeed relegated this season, which remains likely, the locals are unlikely to see cricket bearing the intensity and meaning of that which they witnessed in the morning session for some time. The air was heavy with import as Ryan McLaren, Brad Wheal and Gareth Berg stared the top order of county cricket’s northern powerhouse straight in the eyes and matched them blow for blow, beating the edge by getting the ball to spit, bounce, seam and swing. As well as Hampshire bowled in that opening session it was the catching of Will Smith that could be largely credited with the wickets of Yorkshire’s left-handed openers. Both Alex Lees, against McLaren, and Adam Lyth, against Wheal, tried to force balls through the off side delivered from round the wicket that were arguably not wide enough to do so too, and on both occasions Smith, diving to his right at a wide gully, first with two hands and then spectacularly with one, was there to intercept the ball inches above the turf. The brilliance of Smith did not rub off on to James Vince, whose catching struggles continued as he dropped England team-mate and possible rival for a winter tour spot, Gary Ballance, twice in less than 15 minutes at third slip. It was third time unlucky for Ballance however when wicketkeeper Lewis McManus did not make the same mistake as his captain when a hint of swing extracted a fine edge to leave Yorkshire teetering at 57 for 3.It was then that the pendulum began to swing back towards Yorkshire as Gale and Jake Lehmann combined in a 62-run partnership either side of lunch that arrested their slide. Lehmann’s counter-attacking innings of 58 from 73 balls made for enjoyable viewing. He is a punchy player, unafraid to play his shots and his quickness to pick up length is an enticing trait. After Gale was squared up by McLaren and Lehmann brilliantly caught by Jimmy Adams playing one cut shot too many, the game swung towards Hampshire again only for Tim Bresnan to wrest it back with a typically tough fifty from No. 6.It was after tea with the floodlights on and dark skies above that Hampshire built on the foundations of their strong first two sessions. A superb spell by Berg, in which he took 3 for 13 from five overs and got the ball to move wickedly off the pitch, gutted Yorkshire’s lower order, instigating a dramatic collapse from 212 for 5 to 234 for 9. The three wickets sealed Berg his first five wicket-haul since September 2011. He, like Hampshire more generally, were assisted by the conditions but it took skill to utilise them.Just how important Yorkshire’s unbeaten tenth wicket partnership of 41 between Jack Brooks and Ryan Sidebottom was will become apparent after Hampshire have batted. This felt like a good day for Hampshire, especially after being put into the field, but batting was not easy and Yorkshire have the bowlers to cause real damage if helpful conditions persist.

Celtic’s £24k-p/w Machine Was The Real POTY

Scottish champions Celtic can easily brush aside Saturday's Old Firm defeat knowing that it has been another stellar campaign at Parkhead, with Ange Postecoglou and his charges currently on course for a domestic treble as a marker of their undoubted dominance.

A key figure for the Hoops yet again this season has been that of diminutive marksman, Kyogo Furuhashi, with the Japan international having swept his own 'treble' on Sunday night after claiming three club awards, notably being named as the Glasgow side's Player of the Year, as well as taking home the Players' Player of the Year and Top scorer gong.

The 28-year-old – who currently leads the way in the Scottish Premiership with 24 league goals – has also been crowned as PFA Scotland's Premiership Player of the Year due to his prolific consistency in front of goal, having edged out the likes of Reo Hatate and Callum McGregor, as well as Motherwell's Kevin van Veen.

With 30 goals to his name in 43 games across all fronts to date, it is hard to argue with that host of honours that the former Vissel Kobe man has received, albeit with there perhaps having been another of his teammates who was also deserving of recognition, in the form of Cameron Carter-Vickers.

How good has Carter-Vickers been this season?

According to former Celtic Park hero Jackie McNamara, it is Carter-Vickers who has been the "the player of the year", with the "immense" ace having perhaps gone "unnoticed" at times for the vital work he does in the defensive third, as per McNamara.

The 25-year-old's impact is certainly appreciated by Postecoglou, with the Greek-Aussie hailing the centre-back as "outstanding" back in March, while also lauding him as the "best defender in the league" due to his all-round dominance.

Interestingly, the former Tottenham Hotspur ace's average match rating of 7.14 in the league this season actually places him ahead of that man Kyogo (7.08) – as per Sofascore – with that a further indication of the defender's brilliance in the backline.

Celtic's Cameron Carter-Vickers

The United States international also deserves great credit for having played through the pain barrier in recent weeks prior to ending his season early to undergo surgery, with journalist John McGinley lauding the 6 foot 1 ace as a "warrior" and a "winner" after starring in the Scottish League Cup semi-final win over Rangers last month – a fitting way for Carter-Vickers to bow out.

The £24k-per-week sensation also notably stepped up as skipper in the absence of usual captain, McGregor earlier in the campaign, with his leadership qualities having been lauded by teammate David Turnbull, who described him as an "example to everyone else."

Of course, the remarkable haul of goals that Kyogo was able to achieve will catch the headlines, although Carter-Vickers has certainly been an undoubted, understated star in his own right this season.

Klusener confident of Zimbabwe batting out final day

Zimbabwe batting coach Lance Klusener is eagerly anticipating the final day of the second Test against New Zealand, even with his side three down and still 329 runs adrift

A fondness for the fight at the end of an innings still flickers in Lance Klusener, South Africa’s former and to date only real finisher. Now, in his role as Zimbabwe’s batting coach, Klusener is eagerly anticipating the final day of the second Test against New Zealand, even with his side three down and 329 runs adrift of the target of 387.”We are pretty confident we can bat for the day,” Klusener said at the end of day four. “The pitch is pretty good and New Zealand have been in the field for a long time. From a team growth point of view, I am really looking forward to it.”Klusener’s charges showed marked improvement from the first-Test performance when they collapsed to 36 for 4 and 164 all out in the first innings and 17 for 4 in the second, when they eventually totaled 295. They’ve done better in the second Test, with a first innings total of 362 which included a half-century opening stand, a 148-run partnership for the sixth wicket and a second hundred by a Zimbabwe batsmen in the series with Craig Ervine joining Sean Williams as a centurion. The difference, Klusener explained, came with a chance in mindset. “We wanted to place a value on our wickets. In the first Test match, there were a couple too many soft dismissals. There were a couple that were a bit soft again here but we were prepared to grind out tough sessions and bat time. We want to make sure bowlers work hard for our wickets, like we had to do for theirs.”It also came with a change in personnel. Tino Mawoyo recovered from a thumb injury to take his place at the top of the order alongside Chamu Chibhabha and Klusener thinks they could be the pair to take Zimbabwe forward. “Since I have been involved, I’ve noticed we’ve always struggled to get a good platform. Tino and Chamu have settled things a little bit and take some shine off the ball. I am extremely impressed with them and hopefully they can grow as a partnership together.”Their stand was only worth 45 in the second innings and two wickets towards the end of the day will leave Zimbabwe’s middle order exposed early but Klusener believes they have the players to bat out the day. Zimbabwe still have four specialist batsmen at their disposal: Ervine, who took a knock on the knee but should be all right to bat again, first-Test centurion Williams, Prince Masvaure, although he is nursing a sprained ankle, and debutant PJ Moor. All four have shown signs of being able to occupy the crease and for them, Klusener had a message: “Their job is not finished,” he said.Ideally, he would like all of them to bat like Ervine did. “Craig was really organised. He had a good plan. That’s where we need to get to with the other batsmen because it’s one thing having a plan, but it’s important to be comfortable with the plan.”Ideally, New Zealand would prefer none of them to bat like Ervine. Although Trent Boult gave Zimbabwe credit for showing “great resilience”, he warned them it would be a “a new challenge to bat on a tiring wicket”.But the condition of the strip has remained fairly stable and it will as tough for New Zealand to take wickets as it will be for Zimbabwe not to give them away, and Boult knows it. “The challenges is the pace. It’s been a wicket that we don’t find where we come from. It’s a testing surface but a good test at that,” he said. For Boult, who has yet to reach the speeds he did before he injured his back during the Australia series last summer, the challenge has also been against himself, but he feels he is getting back to his best. “I would have liked to take more wickets but that’s the way it goes. I feel I am getting better with each spell,” he said. His end-of-day burst was particularly impressive, when he got the shape away and picked up the late wicket of Tino Mawoyo. Tim Southee followed up with a similar delivery to get rid of Sikandar Raza and the two late scalps gave New Zealand the edge, according to Boult. “We know it is a very slow and unresponsive wicket. Nice to come back here and only have to grab seven,” he said.Only seven? Or as many as seven? Klusener would say the latter.

Newcastle Make Approach To Sign £14m Premier League Striker

Newcastle United have approached Wolves to enquire about signing Hwang Hee-Chan this summer.

The Magpies have enjoyed a thrilling season which secured Champions League qualification for the 2023/24 season and are expected to spend splash the cash.

Indeed, The Telegraph even report that Newcastle are set for their biggest summer spend ever.

What's the transfer latest on Hwang Hee-Chan to Newcastle?

According to The Mirror, a couple of Premier League clubs, including Newcastle, are interested in a "surprise transfer" for Hwang Hee-Chan this summer. Spurs, Aston Villa and AS Roma are all keen on signing the 27-year-old.

Wolves are under pressure to sell due to the club's need to comply with Financial Fair Play regulations. Hee-Chan is one of the best players at Molineux and his departure could generate a decent sum.

He joined the club in a £14million move from RB Leipzig and while he hasn't exactly set the Premier League alight, this season he managed four goals and three assists in a Wolves team that scored just 31 goals in the league.

Newcastle have approached Wolves but Julien Lopetegui, who is dismayed at the news his club is under pressure to sell, wants all incoming and outgoings to be completed as soon as possible.

Any clubs wanting to sign Hwang Hee-Chan will need to act quickly.

Could Hee-Chan be Newcastle's Roberto Firmino?

Three years ago, the Bundesliga published a player profile on Hwang Hee-Chan ahead of the South Korean's move to RB Leipzig, likening him to Roberto Firmino.

Indeed, the site wrote about the similarities between Firmino and Hwang Hee-Chan, with the former bidding farewell to Liverpool fans on Sunday – scoring a brilliant goal during the Reds' entertaining 4-4 draw with relegated Southampton.

The main similarity between the two players is arguably their ability to drive past players with the ball. Firmino, due to his comparative lack of pace, relies more on deft touches to elude defenders while Hee-Chan, seemingly, has more pace and power.

This allows him to speed past defenders and midfielders on the break. For Wolves, a team that relies on counter-attacking and resolute defending, his pace will be a huge miss if he leaves.

For Eddie Howe, Hee-Chan could be a valuable asset to a side that has shown considerable threat both on the counter-attack and during longer spells of possession.

The centre-forward has four years remaining on his contract with Wolves and so have the power in any negotiations to come.

Abbott out of Quadrangular A-team series after ankle injury

Fast bowler Sean Abbott, captain of the National Performance Squad, has been ruled out of the ongoing Quadrangular A-team one day series after fracturing his left ankle, Cricket Australia said on Thursday

ESPNcricinfo staff18-Aug-2016Fast bowler Sean Abbott, captain of the National Performance Squad, has been ruled out of the ongoing Quadrangular A-team one day series after fracturing his left ankle, Cricket Australia said on Thursday.Abbott suffered the injury during the rain-affected match against Australia A on Tuesday. A release from the board stated that the bowler was struck on the ankle off the final ball of the match, and will undergo scans in Sydney to assess the injury. Batsman Matthew Short will captain NPS in the remaining matches of the series.”Sean was struck during Tuesday’s match and suffered some damage to the ankle bone,” Stephen Timms, a Bupa Support Team Physiothrapist, said. “Sean will undergo further scans in Sydney to assess the full extent of the damage and treatment required.”Abbott took two wickets after NPS’ first two matches in the series. Victories in both matches put NPS on top of the table, ahead of Australia A, India A and South Africa A. Their next match is against India A on August 21.

Wolves Could Lose £28k-A-Week Hero This Summer

Influential Wolves goalkeeper Jose Sa is reportedly a summer transfer target for Aston Villa, according to a fresh rumour regarding his future.

Is Sa a key man for Wolves?

The 30-year-old joined Wanderers from Olympiakos in the summer of 2021, and ever since that point, he has been one of the most important players at the club. He has performed with great consistency and class between the sticks, winning the Supporters Player of the Season award in 2021/22 and shining in all facets of his game.

Sa has made 72 Premier League appearances since arriving, meaning he has almost been an ever-present, and he has proven to be an inspired signing overall. The hope is that he remains at Molineux for the foreseeable future, but there is always a chance that interest in his signature could emerge once any transfer window arrives.

The Portuguese's current Wolves contract expires in the summer of 2026, which does at least put them in a strong bargaining position, but he could feel that a fresh challenge makes sense at this point in his career. A new update suggests that one Premier League rival is already circling, ahead of potential exits of other key players, such as Ruben Neves and Joao Moutinho.

Could Wolves lose Sa to Villa?

According to TuttoMercatoWeb [via Sport Witness], Villa are eyeing up Sa as a direct replacement for Emiliano Martinez this summer, with the Argentine set to "say goodbye". Wolves are believed to value their stopper at €20m (£17.3m), but it remains to be seen if the Villans are willing to spend that amount.

In truth, that sounds like a bargain for Villa, considering what a standout player Sa has been for Wanderers since joining, being hailed as "outstanding" by former defender Andy Thompson. Given his contract situation, Wolves would surely want more money for him, with his performances justifying a higher price tag.

Losing the Portugal international would be a major blow for Wanderers, considering he has arguably been one of the Premier League's most consistent players in his position over the past two seasons, and it wouldn't be easy to find a tailor-made replacement who is at his level.

Unfortunately, the idea of joining Villa could appeal to Sa, though, with Unai Emery coming in and potentially guiding them into Europe, depending on the outcome of Sunday's final-day action in the league. He could see Wolves' Midlands rivals as a step up, in terms of quality, and a chance to find another gear in his career.

Celtic Could Find Taylor Heir In Swoop For £2m Prodigy

Celtic can complete the domestic treble at the start of next month if they are able to overcome Inverness in the final of the Scottish Cup.

It would cap off an excellent second season for Ange Postecoglou at Parkhead but that may not stop the Australian from aiming to upgrade his squad in the summer.

The head coach may want to improve his side in the hope of making more of a dent in Europe, after being knocked out in the group stages of the Champions League, and he could also snap up some younger prospects who could be future stars for the club.

According to the Scottish Daily Mail (26/05/2023, print edition, back page), the Hoops have reportedly been keeping tabs on English left-back Archie Brown, who is available for a fee in the region of £2m, with a view to a possible swoop for the defender ahead of the 2023/24 campaign.

Who is Archie Brown?

He is a 21-year-old full-back who is currently playing for FC Lausanne in Switzerland and the youngster could come in as the eventual heir to Greg Taylor's position in the side.

In the Scottish Premiership this season, the current Celtic whiz enjoyed a terrific campaign as he averaged a Sofascore rating of 7.08 across 31 appearances, which placed him tenth in the squad.

Celtic defender Greg Taylor.

The £15k-per-week ace, who ex-Hoops star Mark Wilson branded a "leader", made his presence felt at left-back by constantly bombing on to make an impact in the final third. He ended the league season with three goals and four assists to go along with his 1.3 key passes per match for the club.

Of the players still at Celtic, only four players created more chances per game than Taylor and this suggests that whoever ends up replacing the Scotsman in the future needs to be able to produce attacking quality from left-back.

Brown, who is over four years younger than the Hoops ace, fits that profile as the youngster has been in fine form for Lausanne this season and has experience playing as a winger in his academy days at Derby County.

The Englishman has scored five goals and provided four assists in 34 league appearances for the Swiss side from left-back this term and managed 15 goals and nine assists in 40 outings for the Rams at U18 level as a forward prior to his move across Europe.

He has also shown signs of being a defensive presence at the back. In the Super League in 21/22, Brown made 2.5 tackles and interceptions per game across four appearances, which is 0.3 more per outing than Taylor made in the Premiership in 22/23.

These statistics suggest that the ex-Derby prodigy has the potential to be Postecoglou's dream heir to Taylor's position in the side at left-back as the dynamo has the scope to develop into an attack-minded defender who can also win possession back on a regular basis.
