Arsenal trailed 2-0 at Stamford Bridge before Rice capitalised on a mistake from Robert Sanchez. The Blues goalkeeper's wayward pass went straight to the midfielder and he smashed it first time into the net from outside the box. A few minutes later, Leandro Trossard went on to score another for the Gunners, securing a 2-2 draw.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The England star says he had legendary midfielder Beckham's famous goal from the halfway line against Wimbledon on his mind after he saw the recent Netflix documentary on him.

  • WHAT THEY SAID

"Everyone’s been talking about this Beckham documentary, and I watched it for the first time last night," Rice said to club media. "The first couple of clips are the game against Wimbledon where he scored from the halfway line and I took a lot of belief from that.

"I was just thinking that it was bizarre that I watched it last night, and then obviously today taking that shot first time and scoring. It was a special goal to kickstart our comeback, you’ve got to keep shooting – if you shoot, you score!

"In a player’s mind, you get a split second to make a decision. It’s the quickest thing that you have to do; you've got to think whether you pass the ball, Leo was free in front of me, or you go for goal yourself. I’ve just watched it back, it was a great finish so I was happy with that."

    WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

Arsenal hope to make it three games without defeat when they meet Sevilla in the Champions League on Tuesday.

Aaron Ramsdale's time at Arsenal is over – Mikel Arteta is right to favour David Raya in pursuit of Premier League and Champions League glory

The Spanish shot-stopper is an upgrade on the England international, who would be wise to start looking for a way out of Emirates Stadium

Arsenal returned to the Champions League stage after a six-year absence in spectacular fashion, thrashing Eredivisie giants PSV 4-0 in front of a packed out home crowd. Bukayo Saka, Leandro Trossard, Gabriel Jesus and Martin Odegaard all got on the scoresheet to wrap up a comprehensive victory, but the Gunners did not have everything their own way.

PSV managed 12 shots at goal in the match, including four on target – but David Raya kept them all out. He also plucked a number of dangerous crosses out of the air as he commanded his box impressively, and launched many of Arsenal's attacks with his superb distribution.

Raya had to wait for his chance after joining the Gunners on loan from Brentford in the summer, but he has now started ahead of Aaron Ramsdale in two successive matches, recording back-to-back clean sheets. If Mikel Arteta opts for the 28-year-old ahead of Ramsdale again when Arsenal host Tottenham in the north London derby, it will confirm a permanent changing of the guard.

Ramsdale played a key role in the Gunners' return to the top four last season, and would have every right to feel frustrated if he does indeed lose his spot to Raya. But it would be the right decision from Arteta, who must be ruthless to take his team to the next level and deliver some long-awaited silverware.

    'It's not about rotation'

When quizzed on his reasons for dropping Ramsdale in Arsenal's 1-0 victory at Everton last weekend, Arteta bizarrely claimed that he plans to rotate his goalkeepers during matches as the season progresses. He told reporters: "Tell me why not. You have all the qualities of another goalkeeper and if you want to do something to change the momentum, do it. They have to play regardless of the competition."

But this wouldn't be the first time that Arteta has eased out a first-choice goalkeeper, as Arsenal legend Thierry Henry noted on while covering the PSV game as a pundit. "It's not about rotation. I don’t think Mikel wants to rotate," said Henry. "He went to get a goalkeeper that I think, and he thinks, is going to win him the league. There is no rotation there. Bernd Leno went through the same thing!

"When Ramsdale arrived, Arteta wanted a goalkeeper that could get him into the top four. I think he sees Raya as the guy that can get him to win the title and that's why he plays him."

    Better all-round package

Raya made more saves than any other goalkeeper in the Premier League last term (154), helping Brentford finish ninth. Ramsdale totalled 95 stops for Arsenal and posted a save percentage of 68.6, while Raya's came in at 77%.

Those statistics are misleading given the fact Ramsdale played for a team with the joint-third best defensive record in the division. Brentford faced far more shots over the course of the season than Arteta's possession-obsessed Arsenal side. But the Gunners boss has always stressed the importance of having a keeper that can help build from the back. Ramsdale's distribution in 2022-23 wasn't bad by any means, as he completed 1276 passes – 572 of which were forward.

The former Sheffield United goalkeeper deserved all the credit he got for helping Arsenal push Manchester City in the title race right up until the final weeks of the campaign. But the numbers show that Raya was far more influential for Brentford.

The 28-year-old completed 1,475 passes in total, and a whopping 1,047 those were forward. He also managed over 600 more touches than Ramsdale, which shows that he demands the ball more often than his new Arsenal colleague.

Raya also made over double the amount of high claims as Ramsdale, who has never really inspired confidence in the defence when it comes to rising highest to gather corners and crosses. It's no coincidence that Arsenal looked a more solid, fluid unit against both Everton and PSV; Raya is simply the better all-round package.

    Raya lays down the gauntlet

Arsenal started the season well even with Ramsdale still in the No.1 role, securing wins over Nottingham Forest, Crystal Palace and Manchester United, but they did also drop two points in a home date with London rivals Fulham.

The Gunners fell behind in the first minute, with Andreas Pereira capitalising on Ramsdale's poor positioning to score from some 35-yards after intercepting a wayward Bukayo Saka back-pass. Ramsdale got his angles all wrong for Joao Palhinha's 87th-minute equaliser, too, though the Portugal midfielder did catch his volley from a Harrison Reed corner sweetly.

Ramsdale's tendency to stray from his goal-line at the wrong moments is one of his biggest weaknesses, and he always has a mistake in him. He is erratic, which goes some way to explaining why he has only won four caps to date for the England national team.

Raya is far more assured, and has already had a calming effect on the Arsenal defence. The Spaniard is also has full faith in his own abilities, as he said at his official unveiling: "The way the team plays out of the back, being confident and taking possession to the other team is the main thing why I fit in perfectly."

He has backed up those words so far, and is holding himself like a man that knows his position is secure. Speaking to reporters after the PSV game, Raya said: "If Aaron comes back in he needs to fight for the team and to win games."

The Brentford loanee has cleverly laid down the gauntlet, which will only increase any doubt that may exist in Ramsdale's mind over his standing in the squad.

    Ramsdale's options

Ramsdale was rewarded for his strong 2022-23 campaign with a bumper new contract at Arsenal, which ties him to the club until 2026. But six months on, his future at Emirates Stadium looks anything but certain.

If Raya continues to start ahead of him in the biggest matches in the coming weeks, Ramsdale will be forced to explore potential exit routes in January. He has to be playing regular football to have any hope of one day usurping Jordan Pickford as England No.1, and wouldn't be short on options if he does decide to leave the Gunners.

According to the , Chelsea and Bayern Munich are both monitoring Ramsdale's situation with a view to a potential winter swoop for the Arsenal net-minder. The Blues would have to pay a hefty fee to prise Ramsdale away from their London rivals, but that won't faze their Todd Boehly-led ownership group – which has spent over £1 billion ($1.2bn) on new players over the past year.

Two of those players bought this past summer were goalkeepers, with Robert Sanchez joining the Blues from Brighton before Djordje Petrovic's move to Stamford Bridge from the New England Revolution late in the window. However, Sanchez has struggled to convince in his first few games under Mauricio Pochettino, and Petrovic is just considered to be a back-up at this stage.

There is a genuinely possibility that Ramsdale could walk into the No.1 role in Chelsea's team, but he'd probably never be forgiven by Arsenal fans if he took that step. Bayern are in greater need of a new keeper right now, and he would be able to call on England team-mate Harry Kane to help him settle into new surroundings in Germany.

Bayern have been looking for a long-term replacement for Manuel Neuer for some time, with the 37-year-old facing a real fight to even get back on the pitch after breaking his leg in a ski accident last year. Sven Ulreich has been filling in, but Ramsdale would surely go straight into Thomas Tuchel's line-up if the Bundesliga champions can pull off a deal in 2024.

Mbappe to LFC ‘almost impossible’ in 2021

Liverpool have made an enquiry about Paris Saint-Germain’s Kylian Mbappe but the ‘sense is’ it isn’t a deal they can do this summer.

That’s according to Chris Winterburn, a journalist for Marca, who revealed the Reds would have to sell one of their current stars to make a move possible.

The lowdown

As Winterburn’s report notes, Mbappe is about to enter the final year of his contract at the Parc des Princes, meaning he has the right to a leave on a free transfer next summer.

The Frenchman’s statistics at PSG are breathtaking, with 132 goals and 61 assists in 171 appearances.

Last season, he scored 42 in all competitions and finished as top scorer in Ligue 1 with 27, seven clear of nearest challenger Memphis Depay.

Even though his deal is winding down, he’s valued at a whopping £144million by Transfermarkt.

The latest

According to Marca, Liverpool have sounded out the possibility of a transfer, albeit ‘more out of hope than expectation’.

The Reds would probably need to sell Mohamed Salah or Sadio Mane to raise sufficient funds for the move.

PSG, the report adds, won’t countenance a sale this summer simply to ‘avoid the financial loss’ of the 22-year-old departing on a free transfer.

While there would be no transfer fee per se in 2022, if indeed Mbappe chooses not to extend his stay in the French capital, the move would still involve a signing on-fee, payments to agents and potentially the highest salary in world football.

Liverpool ‘can’t afford’ to meet Mbappe’s demands, ‘nor would they want to’.

The verdict

Mbappe to Liverpool seems likely to remain in the realm of fantasy. Even if Salah or Mane were to be sold, which feels unlikely in itself, the Reds know that making the move would probably obliterate their wage structure.

The Reds might find themselves anxiously watching on, praying Mbappe doesn’t end up in the hands of one of their rivals, with perhaps the best case scenario a move to Real Madrid – rather than the likes of Manchester City or Chelsea.

He’s so good that, with the right team assembled around him, he could be at the dominant figure over the next decade of football, much in the same way Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi have been.

For now, Reds fans will have to take links with the superstar with a bucketload of salt.

In other news, fans react as an exciting image emerges.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Neymar has now joined the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema in Saudi Arabia and is convinced that he has made the right move at 31 years of age. He is working on a lucrative contract, but insists that no backwards step has been taken when leaving European football.

  • WHAT THEY SAID

Neymar said when asked if would be getting enough competitive action at club level to ensure that he is at his best when joining up with the Brazil squad: "I assure you that soccer there [in Saudi Arabia] is the same. The ball is round, there's a goal, and if you look at the names that have gone to the Saudi league… I don't know whether it is better than the French league or not. I want to win titles for Al-Hilal, my head won't change much. Everyone said the same when I went to France [about competitiveness], and it was the place I was hit the most in my life. I am sure that it won't be easy to win the Saudi championship, other teams got stronger, have famous players. It will be very interesting and I am sure you will be watching."

How the USMNT should line up vs Trinidad & Tobago in crucial Gold Cup clash: Brandon Vazquez over Jesus Ferreira up top

GOAL takes a look at how the U.S. could line up, including a difficult decision up top.

It's not often that you see a team on four points, fresh off a six-goal win, facing a must-win game. And yet here the U.S. men's national team is, knowing that their path to another Gold Cup trophy may just need another three points, and a few more goals, on Sunday evening.

The U.S. heads into the match with Trinidad and Tobago with a chance to win their group. Win without Jamaica making up three goals in their all-but-assured clash with St. Kitts and Nevis and the U.S. is good. A draw, though, leaves the U.S. second in the group, most likely. A loss? Well, that would be another dark, dark day at the hands of the Soca Warriors as the USMNT would almost certainly crash out.

Winning the group is vital. Whoever finishes top will be placed on the opposite side of the bracket from Mexico, a team that very much looks like the favorites. The second-place team, though, would get El Tri in the semis in what will almost certainly be a marquee match.

Because of that, B.J. Callaghan can't quite mess around in this game. He can rotate, sure, and he can play some younger players against a T&T team that should be pretty overmatched. But the U.S. can't get complacent, especially knowing that goal difference could easily come into play.

So, how does Callaghan handle it? How hard does he push for a top-of-the-group finish? And which players, ultimately, give the U.S. the best chance of achieving exactly that? GOAL takes a look…

  • Getty

    GK: Matt Turner

Sean Johnson got the nod last game and, to be honest, it would be nice to see Gaga Slonina get a game. But this is a must-win game for the U.S., so Turner will likely be the guy.

He was tested a bit against Jamaica but he shouldn't be here if all goes to plan. However, with a knockout spot on the line, its unlikely Callaghan will want to play musical goalkeepers.

  • Getty

    RB: Bryan Reynolds

Let's give the kid another go.

Reynolds was fantastic in the last game, scoring one goal while creating chance after chance from the right-hand side. Callaghan could go with a veteran like DeAndre Yedlin but he shouldn't, simply because Reynolds has earned the chance to be the go-to for the rest of the tournament.

  • Getty Images

    CB: Jalen Neal

It's going to be hard to take him out of the XI now.

He's been the USMNT's breakout star of this tournament and he hasn't put a foot wrong yet. His passing has been fantastic, with Neal routinely breaking lines with ease against St. Kitts and Nevis. With this being a similar game, Neal's ability with the ball is a big, big asset for when the U.S. looks to kickstart the attack.

    CB: Miles Robinson

Once again, it all depends on health.

If Robinson is good to go, he is the best center-back in the team and it would be nice to see what Neal looks like next to him. If he isn't good to go, though, Matt Miazga will likely be the guy, even if he has been slightly shaky so far.

Lionel Messi and David Beckham: The superstar bromance that has transformed Inter Miami into a MLS superpower overnight

The seven-time Ballon d'Or winner has made a dream start to life in Florida with the help of a guiding hand from a Manchester United legend

Lionel Messi is the new face of MLS. That was always going to be the case when he confirmed Inter Miami as his next destination after leaving Paris Saint-Germain, but he showed the move is not just a marketing stunt in his first two competitive outings for his new club.

Messi marked his debut in a Leagues Cup clash with Cruz Azul by scoring a trademark 94th-minute free-kick to snap Miami's 11-match winless streak, and followed that memorable introduction up with a stunning brace in a 4-0 rout against Atlanta United. Messi fever has taken hold in America, and no one is enjoying it more than Miami co-owner David Beckham.

When Miami were awarded a MLS expansion spot in 2018, Beckham pledged to build the best team in the competition, before adding: "I think Miami needs a star. You have to realise the audience we have and Miami would expect us to bring in a star. That’s what we plan on doing."

At the time, Messi was still very much a one-club man lighting up European football at Barcelona. But Miami stepped up an ambitious bid to make him their 'star' man when his happy marriage with the Blaugrana began to turn sour in 2020.

"I spent three years. A year and a half, very intensely," Miami's managing owner Jorge Mas recently told when quizzed on negotiations with Messi. "I saw it done at the end of May. Beckham talked with Leo, only about football issues, because he was playing. I didn't want him to feel pressured. We've talked in Barcelona, Miami, Rosario, Doha… I spent the entire World Cup in Qatar, watching Argentina."

MLS commissioner Don Garber has added on Beckham's role in the deal: "It’s just not often that things align, and you deliver on the things you say you’re going to deliver. I think that’s cool. David is a special guy. People don’t understand how smart David Beckham is, how thoughtful he is and how hard-working he is."

It's safe to say that Messi would not be in MLS right now if it wasn't for Beckham. And his blossoming friendship with the Argentine great is also bringing joy to supporters across the United States and beyond.

  • Getty

    'Dream come true'

Beckham initially paved the way for an influx of top players to MLS when he joined the LA Galaxy after leaving Real Madrid in 2007. It was written into Beckham's contract that he could purchase a franchise for just $25 million, and he exercised that option in 2014 to create Inter Miami.

It was the former England international who shined a spotlight on the potential of soccer in the United States and MLS as a global brand. And the early signs certainly indicate that Messi is capable of fully realising it.

The World Cup winner's unveiling at DRV PNK Stadium was a glitzy affair that saw 21,000 people pack in to watch him being presented with his new No.10 shirt. The event was delayed by a thunderstorm, with Miami chief Mas describing the downpour as "holy water" when eventually accompanying Messi to his specially made stage in the middle of the pitch alongside his brother Jose and Beckham.

Messi's delight was written all over his face and he warmly embraced Beckham, who was visibly emotional when addressing the crowd. "It's a dream come true," he said. "Leo, we are so proud that you have chosen our club for the next stage in your career."

Miami would later release images of Messi's official contract signing in the club's offices, with Beckham watching on next to him like a proud father. The Manchester United legend enjoyed a stellar playing career himself, but seems to be getting just as much joy out of seeing his vision for Miami come to fruition after so many years of hard work.

Beckham said in a recent interview with : "I never thought I would have the same feeling as an owner as I had when I was a player. When I got the phone call [to say Messi had chosen Miami], I had the feeling I had when I walked out at Old Trafford or Wembley. I was like, ‘We’ve just beaten all competition to sign the greatest player to ever play our game’."

  • Getty

    10 years in the making

In the same interview, Beckham also revealed that Messi was in his thoughts right from the beginning of his journey in Miami. “It all came from a conversation over a glass of wine at dinner," he said. " I turn to Jorge and say, ‘One day, we need Messi to come to our club’. It was probably when we first met. I actually found on my phone the other day one of the first presentations that (advertising agency) Doubleday & Cartwright did — they mocked up one of the jerseys with the logo on and Leo was wearing it. That was 10 years ago.

"So it was always in my mind. I suppose every owner of a sports franchise thinks, ‘We want to bring the best players to our club’. Does it happen for everyone? Of course not. But we were sat at dinner and we were like, ‘OK, if we could bring Leo for our market, for our fans, for this part of the world, there’s no one better’.”

Even before Inter Miami had played their first MLS game, Messi was on the agenda. In September 2019, Beckham and Mas travelled to Barcelona for a meeting that would pave the way for Messi's eventual arrival in the U.S.

“We got on a plane and flew to Barcelona from London secretly,” said Beckham. “We snuck into a hotel, met Jorge Messi (Lionel’s father and also his agent) and started the conversation. It purely went, ‘We would love your son to play for our team one day. We know he can’t come yet, but one day we would love to have Leo in Miami’.

“Then obviously Jorge (Mas) did an incredible job creating a narrative around what he could do for the sport in this country, what he could do for MLS and what he could do for Inter Miami.”

  • Tears after Cruz Azul debut

Inter Miami earmarked a July 21 date against Cruz Azul for Messi's debut long before he touched down in the U.S., and Beckham played his part in drumming up anticipation for the game. "We don't know if Leo is going to play the game or if he will have minutes, because I think that, after all, he needs to be ready," the Englishman said to . "We have to protect him and make sure that he is ready, because he has been on vacation and has just arrived in Miami."

New Miami boss Gerardo 'Tata' Martino, who previously worked with Messi during spells in charge of Barcelona and Argentina, ended up introducing Messi as a 54th-minute substitute – but it felt like a pre-planned move designed to invite a rapturous ovation from the capacity crowd.

It certainly had the desired effect anyway, and Messi got himself straight into the thick of the action with the home fans willing him to produce a moment of magic whenever he got on the ball. Despite Messi's best efforts, Cruz Azul managed to keep Miami at bay and the game looked destined for a draw – until the 36-year-old won a free-kick on the edge of the box in stoppage-time.

Messi is well past his prime now, but he remains peerless when it comes to dead-ball execution, and he showed it again with the whole world watching, curling a beautiful effort into the top left-hand corner of the net.

A number of celebrity figures in the stands rose to their feet in awe, including tennis legend Serena Williams, but it was Beckham's reaction that really caught the eye. After sharing a hug with his wife Victoria, Beckham was seen with tears in eyes, and he had to take a deep breath to compose himself.

"As soon as I saw the free-kick given I thought this is the way it's meant to end," the 48-year-old told reporters after the game. "It's so exciting tonight for our fans. All of these people that have come down here to see Leo just step on the pitch, let alone just do what he's done. It's a dream come true for everybody in this stadium and everybody around this country to see Leo step into the MLS and perform, and I don't have many words for that."

    The power of Thor

Anthony Hopkins' line reading as Odin holding Mjolnir in the 2011 blockbuster 'Thor' is iconic to a certain generation of Marvel fans, not least because it set up one of the most famous scenes in the entire franchise.

When audiences saw Captain America catch Mjolnir in 'Avengers: Endgame' for the first time some eight years later, they cried tears of joy and cheered in unison, as it was finally proven that the power of the hammer did not belong exclusively to Thor.

Messi's eldest son, Thiago, just so happens to be a Marvel fanatic, and his favourite character is the God of Thunder. Miami boss Martino handed Messi his first start for the club against Atlanta United on July 26, and after breaking the deadlock just eight minutes in, the diminutive forward pulled out a Thor-inspired celebration for Thiago and his other two sons, Ciro and Mateo, as they sat pitchside.

If ever there was a footballer worthy of Thor's hammer, it's Messi, and his gesture to summon Mjolnir aptly captured the magic of his immediate impact at DRV PNK Stadium. There was, however, some initial confusion over the meaning of the celebration.

Beckham was sitting close to Messi's family and also had a huge smile on his face as the seven-time Ballon d'Or winner raised his hand. It was suggested on social media that Messi was simulating a 'hold my beer' signal for Beckham, as a tongue-in-cheek way of acknowledging his own brilliance.

However, Messi's wife, Antonela Roccuzzo, later took to social media to set the record straight. She posted an image of Messi performing the celebration with an emoji of Mjolnir and the amusing caption "Thorsday".

So as it turns out, Messi and Beckham did not have their own private celebration organized ahead of time. But the Miami chief reacted with the same child-like exuberance as Messi's sons, which just goes to show how much he has grown to love MLS' new poster boy.

Leeds interested in signing Neco Williams

Leeds United are reportedly among a number of clubs interested in signing Liverpool youngster Neco Williams in the summer transfer window.

The Lowdown: Williams could leave Liverpool

With Trent Alexander-Arnold the Reds’ undisputed first-choice right-back, the Welshman’s first team chances on Merseyside appear slim moving forward.

For that reason, Liverpool are reportedly willing to sell Williams this summer, with £10m enough for prospective suitors to prise him away from Anfield.

[freshpress-quiz id=“359346″]

The Latest: Leeds keen on potential move

According to Goal’s Neil Jones, Leeds are eyeing up a move for the 20-year-old, with Southampton and Wolves also showing an interest.

Williams has won 13 caps for Wales and is currently playing at Euro 2020, starting in his country’s 1-0 defeat against Italy on Sunday.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-copy-2/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=“none”]

The Verdict: Long-term Ayling replacement?

Eventually Leeds will have to start thinking about replacing Luke Ayling, with the Whites hero turning 30 in August.

Williams could be someone who fills that void, possessing top-level experience at Liverpool and looking like a player who should mature over time. One particular performance for Wales in March led to him being described as “majestic” by Wales Online reporter Paul Abbandonato, hinting at the promise the 20-year-old boasts.

His energy levels should suit Marcelo Bielsa’s style down to the ground and he averaged one tackle and interception apiece per game in the Premier League last season, showing that he can defend when required. All things considered, he could be a worthy addition at Elland Road.

In other news, Leeds have suffered a setback in their quest to sign one player this summer. Find out who it is here.

Barcelona player ratings vs Real Betis: Raphinha offers response to exit rumours while Robert Lewandowski finds the net again

Raphinha scored and assisted, while Robert Lewandowski was among the goals for the second straight game to lift Barcelona past 10-man Real Betis

After a week in which his name continuously popped up in transfer talks, Raphinha looked a player who wanted to fight for his place at the club. The Brazilian had a hand in two goals as Barcelona returned to form with a 4-0 win over Real Betis.

Andreas Christensen opened the scoring for the Blaugrana, meeting Raphinha's cross with a well-taken header. Lewandowski added a second, turning in Jules Kounde's delivery for his 19th league goal of the season.

The decisive third came before half-time, with Raphinha bagging his first goal since early March.

A Guido Rodriguez own goal made it four in a second half of relatively few chances. Still, Xavi's side dominated possession and were able to introduce youngster Lamine Yamal for his first-team debut.

It was a welcome win for a team that has struggled of late. Barcelona have wrapped up La Liga at this point and will want to close out the season in style. This was a performance that suggested they can do just that.

Scored Barca's second with a lovely finish. Should've had another but hit the post. The goals are coming back.

    Gavi (6/10):

Started on the left, looked far more comfortable in a midfield three. Inexplicably avoided a booking.

    Subs & Manager

    Marcos Alonso (6/10):

Brought on to play left centre-back to replace the recovering Christensen.

    Ansu Fati (6/10):

Given 30 minutes to impress. Almost grabbed an assist with a wonderful pass.

    Ousmane Dembele (N/A):

A welcome return from injury after three months out.

    Franck Kessie (7/10):

    A runout to relieve Pedri.

    Lamine Yamal (7/10):

Became Barcelona's youngest-ever debutant at 15. Almost scored. What a night for the teenager.

    Xavi (8/10):

Finally had something resembling a full-strength squad at his disposal, and went back to his signature midfield. Worked a charm, as the Blaugrana bagged three before half time. The second half wasn't quite as convincing, but he will take the three points and much-improved showing.

Lionel Messi disappears! Winners and losers as fans whistle superstar in another PSG home defeat

An ineffective Paris Saint-Germain created little and were made to pay by a clinical Lyon in their fifth Ligue 1 loss of 2023.

The boos rang around Parc des Princes at full-time as Lionel Messi strolled off the pitch. And PSG's notoriously passionate ultras had reason aplenty to be upset. They had put up with a miserable Paris showing, watching their World Cup winner unceremoniously exit after turning in a drab showing in a 1-0 loss to a mid-table Lyon side.

There is unlikely to be much jeopardy in the rest of PSG's season. They have a healthy lead atop Ligue 1, and after being bounced from both the cup and Champions League, are only expected to see out the campaign.

But that doesn't mean it's not without drama. Messi has been linked with a sensational return to Barcelona, and parts of the Paris crowd made their feelings known about their superstar with constant jeers. And his team didn't do much to help him, either.

Lyon took the lead in the second half, with substitute Bradley Barcola sneaking in at the back post to finish a sweeping counter-attack — a deserved opener from a well-drilled opponent.

The last time PSG went behind at home, they were ineffective in their search for an equaliser. And it was the same case here. Manager Christophe Galtier made a few attacking changes, while Messi picked up pockets of space. But the Parisians rarely tested Anthony Lopes, with a deflected strike that required a diving stop the closest PSG came to a real threat.

PSG will likely still see out the league, and were done a favour by Montpellier, who scraped a point against Marseille on Friday. But it's not going to be pretty, especially if these performances continue.

    WINNER: Bradley Barcola

He wasn't even supposed to be on the pitch.

The mercurial Barcola was benched for the first time since February 17, with manager Laurent Blanc leaving the pacy attacker out of his XI. And after Barola entered play for the injured Amin Sarr, he made his case for a regular start. Barcola was impactful from his first few minutes on the pitch, terrorising the languid Danilo Pereira with his electric pace and trickery.

And it was that athleticism that provided Lyon's opening goal. Barcola dashed in front of Achraf Hakimi to meet a cross at the back post and finished calmly across a sprawling Gianluigi Donnarumma. He could have added a second shortly after, cutting inside Pereira and firing on goal — but the keeper made a neat stop to keep him out.

    LOSER: Lionel Messi

The Barca links can't have helped, but it is slightly baffling to see Messi this sloppy. Usually so smooth and reliable on the ball, the forward surrendered possession three times within the first 20 minutes, including a blunder inside the Lyon box that saw a promising counter fall apart.

There were further mistakes, too. The Argentine consistently saw the ball trickle away from his reliable left foot and also blasted a shot over from long-range in a desperate attempt to make something happen late. As the contest drew to a close, Messi was jeered whenever he touched the ball by PSG's passionate ultras. Perhaps a move away is in everyone's best interests at this point.

    WINNER: Laurent Blanc

The first time these two sides met this season, back in September, Lyon could have felt hard done by the result. They conceded an early goal, and had their chances, but fell to a frustrating 1-0 loss. That was under fomer manager Peter Bosz, though. This is a new era.

And Blanc clearly knew how to make things happen against his former club. Lyon were bold here, with the away side unafraid to challenge a makeshift PSG backline. He was happy to go long and use the hold-up abilities of Alex Lacazette to allow his side to saunter forward. Meanwhile, he was sturdy at the back, and ensured that Mbappe was always double-teamed. It all amounted to an opportunistic goal and stout defensive showing.

It is, admittedly, rather easy to take points away from PSG these days. Still, Blanc had the perfect plan to do so. It must have been all the sweeter for the fact that it came against his old club.

    LOSER: Kylian Mbappe

Can this really be the same player that dominated the Netherlands a week ago? Are we sure that the real Mbappe is not hiding somewhere, disguised?

Some players operate more effectively in certain systems, and Mbappe has always been electric for France. But this sort of drop off is near hard to believe. Mbappe was wasteful and lacking in direction against Lyon. He tried to break out the signature moves and darting runs, but found himself swarmed every time. And it led to a selfishness of sorts, the player refusing to pass and instead going alone on a few occasions.

The loss cannot be entirely pinned on him, but the change in quality that comes with a switch in badge is alarming.
