Leeds United may have lost to Wolves on Monday, but dropping three points isn’t the worst thing to come away from this game.
Indeed, the Whites have come away from that match with a worrying injury to a key player as Kalvin Phillips looks set to miss six weeks of action after damaging his shoulder against the Midlands outfit.
Usually, an issue wouldn’t be such a problem for Leeds as their near-£100m spend this summer has left them with a lot of alternatives in key areas, but one thing they don’t have is a Phillips replacement.
Phillips plays a very unique role as the anchor-man in Bielsa’s 4-1-4-1 formation, and there isn’t another player in the first-team squad who plays that role like he does.
Adam Forshaw would be a decent replacement, but he’s still not fit, and even if he was, he’s not played for a year.
Leeds should have planned for this eventuality, professional footballers may be incredibly fit, but they’re not robots, injuries happen, and missing Phillips for six weeks will completely unbalance the team.
There quite simply isn’t another player in the squad who can play that role, so somebody will have to be a makeshift defensive midfielder playing out of position.
There’s no doubting that Phillips is one of Leeds’ most important players, he’s started every game so far this season and he’s an England regular these days.
He was tipped to shine in the Premier League as soon as Leeds were promoted with Kevin Phillips describing him as a ‘top player’, but now the reality is that they will be without a key man for six weeks and seven points from five games suddenly doesn’t look like such an amazing return.
The worst part is that this could all have been avoided. Victor Orta had lots of money to play with this summer, spending nearly £100m, and he completely ignored the blatant need for a back-up defensive midfielder, and if that ends up derailing United’s season, it will be an inexcusable error that the Spaniard has made.

Mas a reviravolta veio mesmo com a chegada de Juan Carlos Osorio, em junho. O colombiano apostou no “Monstro” desde o início e o lançou como volante no segundo tempo de um clássico contra o Corinthians, no Morumbi, dia 9 de agosto. O desempenho na posição impressionou nos cinco jogos que fez, até com gol. Breno havia renascido. Resultado: renovou contrato e é considerado parte da espinha dorsal do time de 2016.

أصدر نادي باريس سان جيرمان، بيانًا طبيًا، ألمح من خلاله إلى اقتراب سيرجيو راموس، مدافع الفريق، من العودة من الإصابة، حيث يغيب عن النادي الباريسي مُنذ انتقاله إلى “حديقة الأمراء”.
راموس كان انضم إلى باريس سان جيرمان، في سوق الانتقالات الصيفي الماضي، في صفقة انتقال حُر، لمدة عامين وذلك بعد نهاية عقده مع ريال مدريد.
ولم يشارك سيرجيو راموس حتى الآن في أي مباراة رفقة باريس سان جيرمان، بسبب إصابته في ربلة الساق، والتي ما زال يعاني منها حتى الآن.

ويبدو أن سيرجيو يقترب من التعافي من إصابته، حيث قال النادي الباريسي في بيانه: “راموس يواصل التدريب بشكل فردي على أرض الملعب، وسيعود إلى التشكيلة في الأيام القليلة المُقبلة”.
وأوضح النادي تطورات إصابة ماركو فيراتي، والذي سيغيب عن الفريق لثلاثة أسابيع: “ماركو يعمل في صالة الألعاب الرياضية (الجيم) وحمام السباحة، ويتم رعايته وفقًا لبرنامج طبي للتعافي من إصابته”.
وأتم النادي بيانه مُتحدثًا عن لياندرو باريدس قائلًا: “لقد استأنف الركض، بعد 19 يومًا، عقب تعافيه من إصابة في عضلات الفخذ اليسرى”.

Matip’s 6 ft 4 stature will prove difficult for 5 ft 7 Gabriel Jesus and 5 ft 5 Raheem Sterling to counter against, especially if long balls are played in towards the attackers.
The Cameroon international uses his height to his advantage and is very strong both in the air and on the ground when battling for possession. Last year, Ian Wright waxed lyrical over the 29-year-old and his “absolutely brilliant” performance against Sheffield United.
If he pulls off a solid shift on Sunday, Klopp and many others will feel a huge sense of relief knowing that he is up to the challenge of stepping up in the absence of Virgil van Dijk. A win over their main title competitors will be a massive boost for Liverpool, who are already making strides towards their second Premier League success story.

West Brom were linked with a multitude of potential striking options throughout the summer transfer window but they can be glad that they didn’t secure one absolute dud.
According to Joseph Masi at the Express & Star, the Baggies held an interest in signing Rennes forward M’Baye Niang on loan back in September.
It’s claimed that Albion sporting and technical director Luke Dowling’s previous dealings with the Senegalese powerhouse at Watford would’ve helped in a move whilst the player himself was open to returning to the Premier League.
The Midlands outfit eventually signed top target Karlan Grant from Huddersfield Town in a £15m deal and they can count their lucky stars that Dowling didn’t follow through with interest in Niang.
The 25-year-old has always been tipped for big things as a player once compared to Alexandre Lacazette and described as strong, quick and skilful despite being 6 foot 2.
However, he would have also arrived with so much baggage as French football expert Jeremy Smith told the Express & Star that tensions have risen between Niang and the Rennes head coach, following on from high-profile controversies at AC Milan.
Reports in France claimed that the Ligue 1 outfit wanted around €20m (£18m) to let him go, which would’ve been one expensive gamble and a half for West Brom.
He’s also thought to be Rennes’ third-highest earner on £51k-per-week, via Salary Sport.
Since his summer of speculation, Niang has played just one match all season which came on the opening day, playing 64 minutes before being withdrawn. The former Hornets flop then made the bench in the next game, but he has not been seen in any matchday squad after that.
The €30m-rated (£27m) striker would’ve been one disastrous signing for the Baggies, so it was thankfully one massive bullet dodged.

واستطرد: “جهاز حسام البدرى أكثر جهاز تعرض للظلم على مدار تاريخ الأجهزة التي تولت قيادة المنتخب، كان يعاني من عدم القبول لدى الجماهير مما تسبب في صدور قرار الإقالة، لا يوجد جهاز يرحل وهو لم يخسر أي مباراة”.
وأتم: “مباراة الجابون الماضية شهدت أفضل تغييرات وقراءة للمباراة ونجحنا في إدراك التعادل بفضل تلك التغييرات والمجازفة”.
واختتم: “لم نتوقع صدور قرار إقالة الجهاز، لم نتوقع هذا السيناريو، لكن استشعرنا تحضير القرار ونحن في طريقنا للعودة”.

Já não é mais segredo para ninguém que o Vasco está buscando a contratação de uma camisa 9. O técnico Jorginho e a diretoria tratam a chegada de um goleador como prioridade para o time na temporada e vários nomes estão sendo oferecidos para a direção. A bola da vez é o ítalo-brasileiro Amauri, mas o elenco confia nos nomes que tem à disposição. Prova disso é que o zagueiro Luan rasgou elogios ao amigo Thalles, jovem promessa das categorias de base do clube.

Thalles é uma aposta do técnico Jorginho para esta temporada. O jogador chegou a ter problemas com o treinador no ano passado. Em uma entrevista coletiva após um jogo do Campeonato Brasileiro, o comandante chegou a dizer que estava de “por aqui” com o atacante. Já na primeira entrevista em 2016, Jorginho mostrou muita confiança no jogador e revelou que tem conversado e o orientado bastante.
O Vasco começou a temporada com quatro nomes para a posição: Leandrão, Thalles, Riascos e Caio Monteiro. Desses, Leandrão foi emprestado ao Boavista para a disputa do Campeonato Carioca. Thalles e Caio Monteiro (que será observado neste período de pré-temporada) são crias da base e Riascos tem contrato – que não deve ser renovado – até maio.
No primeiro treino em que esboçou um time titular para 2016, Jorginho utilizou Riascos naquela posição. O colombiano foi quem terminou a temporada passada como titular da equipe, ganhando a vaga de Leandrão, que foi titular em boa parte da arrancada vascaína no fim do Brasileirão.
