Jan Vertonghen is a target of Inter Milan, per TuttoSport via Calciomercato.

What’s the word?

The Belgium international has a contract that expires in the summer and the Serie A giants are said to be keen to bring him to Italy.

Indeed, the report states that Beppe Marotta, Inter’s CEO, is exploring free transfers, of which Vertonghen could be one following the end of the 2019/20 campaign.

The 32-year-old remains a member of the managerless north London outfit’s squad and has made nine appearances in all competitions thus far this term.

Get a fee

Spurs need to stop this from happening.

The club are staring down the barrel of the gun when it comes to three players: Vertonghen, Toby Alderweireld and Christian Eriksen.

All three have contracts that expire in the summer, meaning that Spurs could lose three first-teamers without receiving a penny in exchange.

With Vertonghen, they cannot allow him to run down his contract before leaving and would be better off receiving a fee.

If that means taking any bid that comes in during the January transfer window, then so be it, ditto if it means convincing Inter to part with a figure that might well be lower than what Spurs would usually expect to receive with the benefit of signing the Belgian six months early.

At least, in that scenario, Spurs would be able to reinvest whatever funds that landed in their coffers to replace him.

Sunderland’s midfield has been a weak point of the team all season long, and if the issue is not addressed in January then it is unlikely their form will improve in the second half of the season.

Stewart Donald has stated previously that there will be funds made available to Phil Parkinson, and though there are a number of areas which could do with new additions, midfield is perhaps the biggest priority.

Will Grigg continues to fluff his lines in front of goal but his manager has maintained his faith in the striker, believing he will come good at some stage.

Given the Northern Ireland international has scored more than 19 league goals or more in four League One seasons, he could be right, but in order to do so he will require more chances to score, and therefore greater creativity from his teammates.

The current crop of midfielders simply don’t provide that. Grant Leadbitter’s 1.4 key passes per game rank him highest, yet he is not a regular starter, which means that responsibility often falls to George Dobson and Max Power.

Neither have shown many signs that they are up to the task, as evidenced by their respective 0.3 and 0.4 key passes per game, and that means the Black Cats are too easily stifled.

While both fare better in a defensive capacity, with Dobson averaging 2.4 tackles per game and Power one, Sunderland need greater balance in the middle of the pitch, and a ball-player would be an ideal addition considering the team has averaged just 52% – the eighth-highest amount in the division.

Too often Sunderland have looked bereft of ideas in attack and have been too easy to keep quiet as a result. Parkinson was meant to change that but other than the 5-0 win over Tranmere he has failed so far.

That is highlighted in defeats against the likes of Lincoln, Wycombe and Shrewbury, all of whom the Black Cats failed to score against, and the midweek trip to Gillingham also produced the same result.

Parkinson needs a spark in the middle and preferably a player with a bit of pace and an ability to drive with the ball at feet, otherwise it is difficult to envisage their form turning around any time soon.

Zavon Hines has been speaking about how he came to get his coaching role at West Ham United, as reported on the club’s official website.

What did he say?

Hines was forced to retire in February, while at National League side Bromley, due to medical advice he had been given.

While this will have been a massive blow for the West Ham academy graduate, who represented the club’s first-team 31 times, it did end up leading to an opportunity to make a return to his routes.

The 30-year-old started with the club in July and is currently an Under 14s coach, looking to help youngsters forge a career in the game, as he managed for himself.

He spoke to West Ham’s official website about how the opportunity came about: “It all happened quite quickly, when I decided to stop playing, I was speaking to [then-West Ham U16s coach] Jack Collison all the time. He’d been through a similar situation to me, and we kind of grew up together, so he told me to come in to see how Chadwell Heath was again.

“I wasn’t expecting to coach straight away – I’d never thought about it like that – but I’ve always wanted to help out.

“I was in and around the Under-18s, and it just reminded me of how it was when I was there as a kid. I enjoyed it so much I came back a few more times, and eventually I decided to try for my coaching badges and take it from there.”

A bit of positivity

Things are pretty miserable at West Ham at the moment, with the team on an eight-game winless streak and sitting 17th in the Premier League table, while questions can begin to be asked about whether there was much point in leaving Upton Park.

Therefore, it is nice to see some positivity coming out of the club, especially when it is considered how Hines’ career came to an end.

Collison excelled in his role as part of the academy, earning himself a move to Atlanta United, so the hope will now be that Hines can follow in his former teammate’s footsteps and contribute to the club.

A fan asked Hay during his weekly Q&A session whether or not there’s a chance of Leeds signing the Norwegian after his release clause emerged recently.

“Absolutely no chance in the Championship and we’ll see whether anyone has a proper go at getting Haaland in January. He’s hot property and the way he’s scoring, someone will go big on him soon. If he’s still there next summer and Leeds go up? It’s possible. They tried to get him previously but couldn’t match Salzburg’s money.”

Massive statement

What a signing this would be.

Not only would it be an absolute coup in terms of what it would do for the team on the pitch, but it would also be a huge statement of intent after promotion.

Imagine if the Whites announce their return to the Premier League by signing a player that’s regularly scored goals in the Champions League.

Haaland’s name has been on a lot of people’s lips and he seemingly can’t stop breaking records as he’s already broken six in Europe’s premier competition this term.

It would immediately put the big teams on alert, and it would go a long way towards re-establishing the Yorkshire outfit as one of England’s top dogs.

Will this move happen? Who knows, but Hay believes it’s possible, so watch this space.

وأتم: “الوضع المالي كارثي داخل نادي الزمالك في الوقت الحالي، لن نعطي وعود لا نستطيع تحقيقها وستكون الأمور كلها واضحة أمام الجميع”.

Danny Rose has appeared to take a dig at Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy, per The Guardian, and has confirmed he has not had a single conversation with manager Jose Mourinho.

What’s he said?

Asked after Spurs’ 3-1 Champions League defeat to Bayern Munich how it felt to have a manager such as the former Real Madrid boss in control, Rose is said to have replied: “Who said he’s in control of the club?”

Of course, the left-back almost left north London in the summer, even travelling to Watford’s training ground on deadline day.

He has previously said that he will not countenance the possibility of leaving in the summer and that he wants to see out his contract at the club, which expires at the end of next season.

And he has confirmed that he has yet to sit down and chat with Mourinho about his future.

He said: “I’ve never had a conversation with him [Mourinho] and I don’t see why I need to.

“As I said before, I’m here for the next 18 months, so I don’t see why I need to have a conversation with the manager.

“I want to do as well as I possibly can, work as hard as I can to achieve what looked impossible a few weeks ago, and that is finishing in the top four [of the Premier League].”

Appalling attitude

Rose has history for this.

He has given tell-all interviews in the past, outlining his desires to leave Spurs and then to stay at Spurs and now he is admitting that he couldn’t care less about talking to his own manager.

The shot at Levy is unnecessary in the extreme; managers aren’t given full control when they take over, obviously, and to suggest they are would be imbecilic.

But to say he has no need to talk to Mourinho – maybe even to pick his brains about tactics – is an absolute nonsense.

Rose needs to do better and, while he is set on staying at the club, it doesn’t appear that he’ll be winning many friends while he does so.

Meanwhile, one Spurs ace was in terrible form against Bayern Munich.
