It means Steve Clarke’s team now face the task of trying to secure third place in the group in order to gain one last shot at qualifying for Euro 2020 as their defeat to Russia firmly ended any hopes of automatically doing so.

There are just two qualifiers left for Scotland as they face Cyprus, who currently hold that sought-after third spot, and then Kazakhstan.

Despite it only being against San Marino, who place last in FIFA’s world rankings, the result should offer up some encouragement considering the barrage of defeats suffered in the lead up to Sunday’s match.

Sheffield Wednesday had a player involved with Liam Palmer featuring the full 90 minutes, playing back in his more natural right-back position.

Per SofaScore, Palmer recorded four tackles and three key passes, proving to be a vital cog defensively and in the buildup to any attack.

His showing last time out against Russia was particularly poor as he was part of a defensive that shipped four versus the Russians. Wednesday’s key man lost possession 13 times and was dribbled past on one occasion.

But here, the long-serving Owls man managed one clearance, one successful dribble, and a passing accuracy of 86%, also per SofaScore, to round off a better afternoon.

Now as previously mentioned, San Marino are no barometer of top quality – let alone that of the Championship – but you can only beat what is in front of you and Palmer has done the job asked of him.

If anything, he showed that one bad game hasn’t thrown him off completely and he has the ability to bounce back.

The 28-year-old has played 152 of his 232 career matches at right-back for the south Yorkshire club according to Transfermarkt’s recorded figures.

Lots of Crystal Palace fans have taken to Twitter to react after they heard that Christian Benteke had scored his first goal since April.

The 6 foot 3 striker found the back of the net just three minutes after coming on for Belgium against San Marino, as Roberto Martinez’s side recorded a 9-0 victory.

It was Benteke’s first strike since his headed effort against Arsenal back in April, his one and only goal from the 2018/19 campaign.

In total, the 28-year-old has netted just four goals in his last 58 games for the Eagles across all competitions – you could say that it is a surprise to even see him in the Belgium squad, let alone scoring.

One would presume that Palace fans are hoping this goal will give their £27m forward a bit of much-needed confidence in front of goal, although the quality of the opposition – and the fact that goalkeeper Simone Benedettini didn’t even dive – somewhat reduces the validity of the strike.

Dele Alli was back at his best and rescued a point for Spurs against Watford, but it could have been more if he wasn’t let down by his manager and those around him.

The England international has found first-team minutes hard to come by since his return from injury earlier in the season, but he showed signs that he was back to his best on Saturday and tried to get his team going.

However, as is typical of their recent form, Pochettino’s side to failed to get going with other attackers such as Harry Kane and Lucas Moura not involved as much as they should have been, and a negative formation holding Spurs back.

The Argentine decided to start with three centre-backs, understandable given his side had conceded 13 goals in three games, but not against a Hornets side winless in the league, having scored just four goals and conceded 20 prior to the meeting.

Pochettino realised a mistake was made, too, and decided to swap Son Heung-min for Davinson Sanchez, but it would have been ideal for Alli if the South Korean had started.

An added dimension in attack

Calls from fans for Lucas to feature more were made after the Brighton defeat but he struggled to make an impact on Saturday with 20 passes completed and a pass accuracy of 80%.

That meant Spurs lacked options in attack, and despite Alli’s best efforts to act as the main creator in Christian Eriksen’s absence, he couldn’t find a way through Watford’s defence – until his own effort late on.

It was a situation which could have been avoided had Son started. He provides the pace but also the desire to run in behind, which Lucas lacks, and that failure to stretch the visitors once again made Tottenham too easy to contain, as it was against Brighton and Newcastle, to name two examples.

Alli was a threat throughout, taking the ball past opponents with three successful dribbles and looking to provide chances for his teammates with two key passes – matched only by Erik Lamela.

The Argentina international was another who showed why he shouldn’t be kept on the bench, and had he been on the pitch for longer he could have shared the creative responsibilities with Alli, and in doing so allowed the 23-year-old to get on the end of chances, as he did for his goal.

Everton have failed to fill the void left by Romelu Lukaku in 2017. The lethal powerhouse may not have won over the entirety of the club’s fanbase, but it’s impossible to argue with a goal scoring record that makes him the club’s all time top Premier League goalscorer.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Cenk Tosun haven’t showcased enough quality to suggest they are capable of filling the void left by the Belgium international.

It is, after all, an incredibly tall order to fill the boots of such a clinical centre forward.

While inconsistency has become a notable feature of his time in the Premier League so far, Richarlison is the one attacker residing within the Toffees’ ranks who looks most likely to provide the level of potency that followed Lukaku to Manchester.

Everton legend Duncan Ferguson – a man who knows what it takes to thrive on Merseyside – has praised Richarlison and he believes he is getting better with age.

The Brazil international is currently in a bit of rut having scored just two goals in the Premier League this season.

What makes this all the more concerning is the fact both goals came in the same game against Wolverhampton Wanderers, meaning the Brazilian has failed to score in eight league games out of nine.

But Ferguson has suggested that his dry spell isn’t a major cause for concern and he will continue to improve over time.

Ferguson told The Athletic: “Richarlison is getting better as he gets older.

“Coaching helps but every player improves with age too. You’re better at 21 than when you’re 19.

“Lukaku was the same.”

Being compared to a striker of Lukaku’s ilk is a compliment in itself for Richarlison, but his haul of 13 league goals last season proves that it’s justified. By comparison, Lukaku scored just 10 league goals in his first full season as a permanent Everton employee, a fact that underlines the scale of the 22-year-old’s achievement in the most recent campaign.

Over time, especially with coaches like Ferguson working alongside him, Richarlison could turn out to be an elite forward. Silva should consider playing him down the middle more often, with the form of Theo Walcott and Bernard finally clicking on the wings against West Ham last time out.

Silva is in desperate need of goals still, as the club still languish in 15th after the West Ham win, but perhaps the answer to his problem is standing right in front of him.

Everton have sorely missed Lukaku in the past two years, but Ferguson’s quotes suggest Richarlison could blossom into the lethal goal scorer they need in the coming years.

وحول رحيل المدير الفني جمال سلامي عن قيادة الرجاء وتأثر الفريق المغربي برحيله، أكد أروابارينا أنه لا يهتم مطلقًا بتلك الأخبار ويركز مع فريقه فقط وتجهيزه للمباراة الهامة، ولا يصح الحديث عن أمور تخص المنافس.

وعن الإصابات في الفريق المغربي، نوه أن هناك متابعة مستمرة له من جانب الجهاز الفني ولكنه يمتلك عناصر مميزة وبإمكانه التعويض وتولي مساعد المدرب المسئولية يعني أنه لن يكون هناك أي تغيير في الشكل الفني والخططي والفريق سيلعب مواجهة قوية قدر توقعه وبيراميدز جاهز لتلك المواجهة.

وتطرق المدرب للحديث عن لاعبه أحمد فتحي، قائلًا: “لاعب رائع للغاية وصاحب تاريخ طويل ووجوده أمر رائع في بيراميدز ووجوده مهم جدًا داخل وخارج الملعب”.

Phil Parkinson suffered his second loss as Sunderland boss against Shrewsbury on Saturday but he is confident that his style can produce a winning formula.

What did he say?

A big issue for Sunderland under Jack Ross was their inability to score goals. Last season, that resulted in too many draws which meant they had to settle for a play-off place, but it appears that it is an issue that has stuck with the squad since his departure.

The Black Cats drew a blank in Parkinson’s two defeats, which meant that Tuesday’s thumping of Tranmere likely came as a welcome relief for fans, many of whom enjoyed the attacking display of Duncan Watmore in particular.

That is the style Parkinson is looking to implement at the Stadium of Light, and suggested that dominant performances like the one on Saturday would lead to points for his side more often than not.

Speaking in his post-match press conference, as reported by SAFC.com, he said: “We have totally dominated the game and the one attempt from them has resulted in a goal.

“In terms of the way we wanted to set out I couldn’t have asked for anymore but as everyone knows it’s all about sticking the ball in the back of the net.

“We have completely dominated the game – if we keep playing like that then we are going to win a hell of a lot of games at this level.”

Change in approach?

Parkinson’s success in taking Bolton up shows he knows how to manage a big club playing at a lower level than they are typically accustomed to, but his comments indicate he will alter his methods.

That could be a worry, as it creates a risk that his new strategy may be less effective. However, it may be a necessary one.

His promotion-winning Wanderers team scored only 68 goals in 2016/17, 12 less than the Black Cats managed last year, and therefore his achievements there were built on a solid defensive foundation, as his side conceded only 36.

As a result, his desire to move towards a style with more attacking intent and dominance of the match is of a significant contrast to his tried-and-tested method, though he may feel he has quality attacking players at his disposal.

One of those could be Will Grigg, who has 101 League One goals in his career, and if Parkinson can instil that clinical edge into his players, and Grigg in particular, then Sunderland should be able to gather some consistency.

It will be interesting to see if the manager continues to set his team out in a similar fashion, as if the Black Cats’ midfield imposes itself onto the opposition they should be a handful, as the display against Tranmere suggested.
