Mauricio Pochettino will be working hard behind the scenes at Tottenham to get his squad ready for the upcoming season. Today’s Spurs transfer roundup includes an update in the pursuit of a Ligue 1 star, one of the club’s youngsters exiting the club on a temporary basis and a rival entering the race for a La Liga midfielder.

Ndombele signed

Tottenham Hotspur have completed the signing of Lyon’s Tanguy Ndombele, per the club’s official website. Spurs will reportedly pay a club-record fee of £53.8m for the French midfielder.

Amos joins QPR on loan

It was confirmed on Monday that Luke Amos will join Championship side QPR on a season-long loan. “I know the quality that Luke has and how he can impact matches. I am very grateful to Mauricio Pochettino, his staff and John McDermott who have helped to make this loan happen,” said manager Mark Warburton.

United rival Spurs for Lo Celso

Marca (via Sports Witness) is reporting that Manchester United are very interested in signing Giovani Lo Celso from Real Betis. Gianluca Di Marzio had previously reported that Tottenham had made a €70m (£62.7m) bid for the player, but it appears United are very keen to land the midfielder as well.

وبحسب صحيفة “ديلي ميل” البريطانية، تراجع مانشستر يونايتد عن فكرة دعم الدوري الأوروبي الممتاز والذي كان مدعو للمشاركة به من إنجلترا مع كل من ليفربول، آرسنال، تشيلسي، مانشستر سيتي وتوتنهام، بعد تحذير فيفا الأخير.

هناك بعض الأندية الأوروبية الأخرى التي تسعى وراء تأسيس هذه البطولة وعلى رأسها ريال مدريد، يوفنتوس وبرشلونة، خاصة وأن أرباحها تصل إلى 348 مليون يورو.

There are a lot of incredible Italian managers out there in the game today. From Massimiliano Allegri to Maurizio Sarri with Carlo Ancelotti and Antonio Conte inbetween, it’s hard to get away from it. Claudio Ranieri, though, fleets in an out of the top-class category and Newcastle would be smart to avoid appointing him.

Rafa Benitez did a fantastic job under difficult circumstances at St James’ Park, given the way Mike Ashey has the club in financial shackles. The 2005 Champions League winner has been one of the best coaches in the world for a number of years, his CV speaks for itself, but now he’s left the St James’ Park hotseat vacant.

That’s why the Ranieri talk has come about. Sky Sports have claimed that the former Chelsea, Leicester City and Fulham boss is interested in the job at Newcastle United, but that news will not come as music to the ears of our resident Geordies given the 67-year-old’s recent work.

Indeed, it would be a big mistake to appoint the Italian. Leicester City’s 2015-16 title-winning season might be the miracle that the Magpies will hope they can replicate, but Ranieri’s three jobs since certainly don’t offer much hope.

Those jobs have been at Nantes, Fulham and AS Roma, where the football and results have all been underwhelming. Indeed, he led Nantes to a ninth-placed finish during the 2017-18 campaign which was as a step backwards for the club as they finished in seventh position in the 2016-17 campaign. Also, he failed to prove himself on his return to the Premier League with Fulham, sending them on the path to relegation by securing just three wins in 17 games. And, he didn’t exactly make any headlines at AS Roma, his latest job, as they missed out on a Champions League place.

Indeed, it makes no sense to move for a manager who’s done more harm than good over the past few years and some Newcastle fans appear to agree (as per HITC).

After weeks of speculation, Leeds United have finally landed their man. Helder Costa has signed for the Yorkshire club on an initial one-year loan deal which will become permanent at the end of next season.

The Whites will reportedly fork out £15m to sign the Portuguese in 12 months’ time, but the way they have structured the deal may work out well in the long run.

What’s the story?

It had been reported for a while that the Whites wanted to sign Costa on loan, but the announcement of the deal came with the news that they were also going to sign him permanently next summer.

The former Wolves man’s stats in the Championship prove that he has the potential to be one of the signings of the season, but one thing that may excite United fans is the ingenious way in which Victor Orta negotiated the move.

Smart negotiating

Orta has had his critics since becoming director of football at Elland Road, but this move has to be heralded as one of his greatest.

It was thought that Leeds would have to sell some of their key players if they wanted to make any big signings this summer, but the structure of this deal allows the Whites to delay this for another year.

Indeed, if they don’t go up, they may have to sell some of their most valuable players to subsidise the Costa fee, but if they are promoted, it allows them to keep hold of their stars.

This method of transfer allows Marcelo Bielsa’s side to be as strong as possible for the upcoming season, and although they may have to make some sales next term if they don’t go up, they have given themselves some time and one has to believe their chances of being promoted have drastically improved given the proven quality Costa has at this level.

وعن توقيت المفاوضات، أوضح: “كل ذلك حدث بعدما أعلنت أنني غادرت الزمالك، الأمور سارت بشكل سريع جدا، البعض كان يستطلع رأيي قبل رحيلي عن الزمالك كنت أرفض”.

وتابع: “لكن فور إعلان رحيلي تلقيت اتصالاً من السعودية وعُرض علي العمل هناك من التعاون وهو إسم كبير”.

وأكمل: “عندما توليت فريق التعاون كانت البداية، صعبة، واشتغلت أن اتنشل النادي وأعتقد أنني نجحت في ذلك، استطعنا الوصول إلي مراحل متقدمة في دوري أبطال آسيا، والآن نحتل مركز خامس في الدوري ولدينا طاقم فني ولاعبين علي مستوي جيد وحققت أرقام قياسية لفريق التعاون بالنسبة بالدوري السعودي الأقوي في الدوريات العريبة”.

وواصل: “أنا سعيد بالعمل في التعاون” مشيراً أن ما قدمه مع الأهلي والزمالك هو ماجعنلي معروف والجماهير تقدرني”.

وعن دور حازم فتوح في عرض التعاون وماهي العلاقة بينكما، أوضح: “هو وكيلي، تلقينا العديد من العروض قبل الرحيل عن الزمالك بعدة أشهر، وحقيقة الأمر أن وجودي في الزمالك هو من سمح لي بتلقي هذه العروض”.

وأتم: “لكن العرض من التعاون السعودي جاء بعد انتهاء تعاقدي مع الزمالك ووجدت الظروف جيدة وجهاز فني جيد في انتظاري، وهم أشخاص يتمتعون بأخلاق عالية وهذا ما شجعني على قبول المهمة”.

Lots of Liverpool fans have taken to Twitter to mock Everton’s reported interest in Lille forward Nicolas Pepe, who is rated at £58.5m – the same report also states that they are interested in David Neres, Malcom and Bertrand Traore.

The Ivory Coast international is hot property right now after hitting 22 Ligue 1 goals last term for Lille, helping them finish second and earn a place in the Champions League as a result – only Paris Saint-Germain striker Kylian Mbappe scored more with 33.

That form has led to heavyweights such as Inter Milan, PSG and the European champions Liverpool being interested in his services.

Perhaps that is why the Liverpool fans on Twitter have found their Merseyside rivals’ interest in Pepe as a source of humour. Realistically, why would he leave to join Everton when he could play Champions League football with his current side or any of the aforementioned clubs interested?

It would certainly be a real statement of intent from the Toffees if they signed Pepe or any one of the other names mentioned, no matter how unlikely it may be.

Ligue 1 side Dijon are monitoring Rangers’ Borna Barisic with the aim of signing him from Steven Gerrard’s side, according to Soccerlink.fr, via The Daily Record.

What’s the story?

Barisic has only been at Ibrox for a year but Dijon are reportedly attempting to lure the Croatia international away from the Gers. The French side is looking at replacements for Oussama Haddadi, who went to Al-Ettifaq Club this summer.

The left-back had an inconsistent debut campaign at Ibrox, playing 22 times, but he was never a favourite of his manager.

Gerrard was fuming at his left-back for not returning from international duty having picked up an injury, and after this admission from Gerrard, the 26 year-old’s future at the club looked grim.

However, he started and starred in the Gers’ 4-0 win away at St. Joseph’s in Europa League qualifying last week. Barisic set up two goals (although his ‘assist’ for Connor Goldson’s goal was probably a goal in itself) in the first-round victory.

Bye-bye Barisic

Playing only 22 times from a possible 53 games that he was eligible for isn’t good enough for the only recognised left-back at Ibrox. Jon Flanagan and Andy Halliday both covered in the Croat’s regular absence last season, despite not being natural left-sided defenders.

On his day, Barisic looks capable of influencing games from his left-back berth and his seven Croatia caps haven’t come about by accident. And yet, you don’t have to look far for a more consistent alternative.

Kilmarnock’s Greg Taylor has been of interest to the club this summer, according to The Daily Record, and as a full Scotland international he might be ready for a big move to Ibrox.

Taylor was “excellent” on his Scotland debut according to manager Steve Clarke, and didn’t look out of place against a star-studded Belgium side.

The 21-year-old missed just five matches of Killie’s 46 game season last year, so is a much more trustworthy option than Barisic.

Quite simply, the 2018 signing’s injuries and inconsistent form make him a huge risk going into a campaign with several competitions to fight in.
