West Ham: Dani Ceballos could be a revelation in east London

Making the move to Real Madrid, no matter how good you are, invites a tonne of pressure on how well you perform for the Spanish giants.

We have seen the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema thrive for Los Blancos whereas Gareth Bale and James Rodriguez have faltered in the Spanish capital, and for Dani Ceballos, the youngster falls into the latter.

Since making the move from Real Betis to Madrid for a reported £14.5 million the 22-year-old midfielder has found it hard to find a permanent place in the starting XI and could be on the way out of the club after just two years at Real, and West Ham are interested.

According to the Express, Manuel Pellegrini has opened talks with Madrid over the signing of Ceballos, who could leave for just £20 million, and pulling off such a deal would be a steal for West Ham.

Although game time has been limited at Real Madrid, Ceballos is still a player who could make an impact and impress at a top-division side, and having been likened to Cesc Fabregas in the past, the Spanish international would be a welcome signing for the Hammers.

As well as being an overall quality signing for the club, Ceballos would add much-needed creativity to the Irons, who have been heavily reliant on Felipe Anderson this season. With the Spanish playmaker in the side, though, the burden will be lessened for the Brazilian winger.

Ceballos would be a coup for West Ham if they are able to pull off the signing, and the Spaniard would bring something new to the team that have needed a new dynamic for the past few seasons. If David Gold and Sullivan splash the cash, that is.

West Ham fans, would Ceballos be a good signing? Let us know!

Rangers: Dapo Mebude can be Steven Gerrard’s secret weapon in 2020 title push

Let’s be honest, who was that bothered about Sunday’s final game week in the Scottish Premiership? Rangers certainly didn’t seem to be as Kilmarnock ensured Steven Gerrard ended the season in defeat, although taking the positives from the clash, the Gers got to see 17-year-old Dapo Mebude get a run out in the senior side.

Ultimately, the youngster couldn’t mark his appearances with a goal or a win, but he still did enough to impress the supporters with his neat touch on the ball and willingness to put in the hard yards in his time on the pitch. There now must be thoughts amongst the Bluenoses that Mebude is more ready than they thought, and he’ll be expected to get more minutes in next season’s title push.

The weekend’s action may have been the last time which the Gers witness Alfredo Morelos bag for the Gers, and if he does find himself packing his bags and leaving Glasgow this summer then it will be up to Steven Gerrard to either recruit a replacement or source one from the youth sides. If he opts for the latter, Mebude is the obvious candidate to step up and try and add goals.

Jermain Defoe, Kyle Lafferty and Dapo Mebude have enough goals in their boots between them to replace Morelos, it’s just whether the fans, and Steven Gerrard, can put their combined faith into the strikeforce. It obviously helps that Stevie G has added goalscoring wingers in the form of Jordan Jones and Jake Hastie for next season, but without a doubt, Mebude will be the mystery element for the Gers.

The 17-year-old is blatantly being looked at as a star of the future as he was rewarded with a new contract back in January, tying him down to Ibrox until 2021. That’s a much longer deal that most players of the youngster’s age get at the famous Glasgow club, and you simply cannot rule out the youngster playing his part next season as Rangers target Celtic’s Scottish Premier League crown.

Rangers fans, do you want to see more of Dapo next season? Let us know, comment below!

Liverpool fans on Twitter love the sound of a Sessegnon swoop

Liverpool fans are in a strange position ahead of this summer. The Reds did a lot of their much-needed business last summer, bringing in a top goalkeeper and a reliable defensive midfielder as well as cover for the front three in Alisson, Fabinho and Xherdan Shaqiri. However, this summer what they need is a lot less clear.

There have been far fewer rumours linking players with an Anfield switch this summer, although there have been a few talks of a left-back coming in deputise for Andrew Robertson, and this report from The Daily Mirror is looking at the possibility of bringing in Ryan Sessegnon from Fulham. The youngster is a boyhood Kopite and whilst the Cottagers want £40 million for him, he shouldn’t cost that much.

When Fulham went down a lot of clubs will have turned their heads to have a look at Ryan Sessegnon’s situation, and The Mirror have reported that alongside Liverpool the likes of Manchester United, Tottenham and Juventus are all looking at throwing their names into the hat to sign the versatile left-sided ace. He may not be as good as Andrew Robertson, but he can provide cover for the Scot and is certainly better than Alberto Moreno.

Charlton Live podcast discuss Lee Bowyer’s big selection headache ahead of Wembley date

[ad_pod ]

Charlton face Sunderland this weekend in the play-off final at Wembley Stadium, where they will wrap up what has been a hugely successful campaign, particularly amid ongoing struggles away from the pitch.

Promotion seemed so unlikely when the season began but is now just one game away for the Addicks – their achievements have been surprising to say the least but the fact that Lee Bowyer will be scratching his head as to who should start on Sunday shows just how far the SE7 outfit have come in the past eight months or so.

Charlton Live podcast were keen to discuss the big selection headache facing the former midfielder in Thursday night’s match preview and they’re predicting one harsh decision.

What did they say?

Well, speaking on the final pre-match podcast of the term, host Louis Mendez said (00:16:08):

“There’s a question at the back as well, and he has had a very good second half of the season, and he wasn’t the only one really so he might feel unfairly picked out here but (Naby) Sarr looked a little bit nervous [against Doncaster], maybe I’m reading too much into that but we know we’ve got an able deputy in (Jason) Pearcey. Bowyer will have a few decisions to make.”

Tom Wallin then added (00:16:41):

“For me, that one at the back, I think, as we’ve said several times it’s going to be gutting for whichever of those two misses out but, for me, I think I said it on Sunday’s show as well or whenever we did a show last, it’s got to be Pearcey (who starts), just for that experience.”

Harsh on Sarr

The big Frenchman has exceeded all expectations this season having endured a rocky few years since signing from Sporting Lisbon in 2015 and has largely kept the aforementioned Pearce out of the starting XI – not an easy feat.

Lionel Messis have been spotted at The Valley, Boundary Park and even in Wales in the video below…

The last thing that Charlton need, though, on this match of all matches, is players who might not be up to the occasion and Sarr’s ‘nervous’ performance against Donny should be a warning sign for Bowyer. It’s harsh to leave the 25-year-old out based on a singular uncertain game amongst however many great ones but 31-year-old Pearce’s experience will be priceless on Sunday.

The Match: Real Madrid 3-1 Liverpool

[ad_pod ]

It’s a stage that isn’t an unfamiliar one for a club with such an esteemed European pedigree like Liverpool’s.

The Reds have appeared in numerous European finals throughout their rich history, winning five of them to cement themselves amongst the Barcelonas, AC Milans and the Real Madrids of the footballing world.

It was the latter who Jurgen Klopp’s men faced in the Champions League final last year, where they had the chance to record a sixth European crown with victory in Kiev.

Has Alisson been Liverpool’s most important signing of the season? Check out the video below to find out why Jurgen Klopp thinks so…

Unfortunately, the Merseysiders fell at the last hurdle and lost 3-1 to the Spanish giants, mainly due to Loris Karius making two errors that will unfortunately live with him for the remainder of his days.

The German’s mistakes have been well documented, but what else went wrong for Liverpool that day and what do they need to work on to avoid a repeat of a similar outcome?

Firstly, just by taking a look at the WhoScored numbers from the tie, we can see that Klopp’s side were battered in terms of possession.

Madrid had 66% of the ball and practically dominated proceedings throughout; Liverpool only really troubled them at set-pieces, which is where they got their goal from in the end.

Of course, Mohamed Salah’s early withdrawal through injury killed the game and made it hard to replicate the team’s usual tempo, leading to a flat performance.

Zinedine Zidane’s men bettered Liverpool in almost every department; the Reds made seven more tackles than Los Blancos, but other than that, they were outfought all over the pitch.

The reigning champions had more corners, won more headers, had more shots, more dribbles, better passing accuracy, and more.

There are a few reasons as to why.

Other than the fact that Los Blancos had won the previous two editions of the competition and were clearly a superior side, other factors went against Liverpool.

As aforesaid, Salah’s early withdrawal was pivotal, and meant that Adam Lallana had to come in and replace him, which was never going to work – he had made just 15 first-team appearances that season.

The two are vastly different operators, with the Englishman specifically lacking pace in comparison to the Egyptian which severely affected the Reds’ tempo and their ability to hurt Madrid on the break.

And in all, compared to Zinedine Zidane’s bench, Liverpool’s was extremely weak.

Klopp’s bench was as follows:

Simon Mignolet, Ragnar Klavan, Alberto Moreno, Nathaniel Clyne, Dominic Solanke, Emre Can, Adam Lallana.

That simply isn’t good enough when your opponents have Gareth Bale and Marco Asensio on theirs.

This year, that isn’t that case as Liverpool have strengthened significantly, and will be able to have game changers such as Gini Wijnaldum, Daniel Sturridge, Divock Origi and Xherdan Shaqiri waiting in the wings.

Whilst that aspect has improved, Liverpool must not allow themselves to get burnt out too quickly as they did early on in Kiev, and need to be patient and trust the process.

That has been a hallmark of this season; a far more measured approach from Klopp’s side. Now it’s a matter of making sure the size of the occasion doesn’t lure them into an early burnout.
