Sunderland: Promotion the priority, but it will be through play-offs for the Black Cats

Sunderland have the distraction of the EFL Checkatrade Trophy Final this weekend, but next week sees them back to their main objective of winning promotion to the Championship.

Regardless of what happens at Wembley, failure to get out of League One will overshadow anything else, and with only having been beaten on two occasions, it would be a wasted opportunity.

Manager, Jack Ross, insisted this week that he didn’t come to Sunderland to simply stabilise the club, he came to get the club promoted.

Now is the time for him to finish off the job he has started, and see the season out with the club becoming a Championship side, whether through automatic promotion, or the play-offs.

We have looked through the remaining League One fixtures, and through the help of a League One prediction calculator, we have determined that the season will end in heartbreak for fans, as far as automatic promotion goes.

We have Sunderland finishing the season on an impressive 96 points, but still three points behind second-placed Barnsley.

The irony is, in our opinion, the Black Cats will not lose another game in the run-in, with wins over everyone — including Sunday’s opponents and promotion rivals, Portsmouth — with a pair of draws at Fleetwood and Peterborough.

That will mean Sunderland will only have lost two games all season, which is the least defeats in the division.

All season, the problem for Ross’s side has been the number of draws, and their inability to turn many of those into victories.

Currently sitting on 16 draws — with two more to come from our predictions — is a potential loss of 32 points. Had they converted just a quarter of them into wins, and promotion would almost be a foregone conclusion.

Other than that, the main problem is out of Sunderland’s hands, and that is the form of their rivals. Luton and Barnsley have been very impressive, and if they see the season out in a similar vein, the two automatic spots will be theirs.

Of course, this is all speculation, and there are sure to be ups and downs, and twists and turns, during the final weeks, but it should serve as a warning to everyone, where the priorities should lie this weekend at Wembley.

He’ll be a legend! Southampton fans love what Hojbjerg has said about his teammate

[ad_pod ]

Southampton picked up where they left off for the international break on Saturday as they emerged 1-0 victors of a difficult clash with Brighton, in which Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg claimed the winner. The Saints captain showed his credentials as such with his comments on Nathan Redmond post-match and the fans are loving it.

Former Norwich man Redmond teed up Hojbjerg just after the restart, bursting forward and releasing the Dane on the overlap, before he found a way past Mat Ryan in net for the Seagulls despite the angle narrowing by the millisecond.

Having been made permanent captain in December when Ralph Hasenhuttl took the helm, former Bayern Munich man Hojbjerg has been an ever-present in the starting XI and is showcasing his excellent leadership skills on a weekly basis.

His recent words on Redmond and the speedster’s performance have gone down very well with the St Mary’s faithful.

Former Wigan & Fulham man, Jimmy Bullard recently showed that he’s still got it! Check out the video below…

Shrewd addition of Nicolas Lopez can help Wolves solve big issue

[ad_pod ]

Wolves are currently monitoring Uruguayan forward Nicolas Lopez according to The Birmingham Mail. Although not well known, he would help solve a major issue at Wolves.

What’s the word?

Representatives from Wolves have reportedly flown out to South America to watch Lopez in action for Brazilian club Internacional and they appear to like what they see.

The striker has been among the goals this season, which has included scoring three in three in the Copa Libertadores. He could be seen as an ideal partner for Raul Jimenez who signed for the club permanently on Thursday afternoon.

It’s not yet known what fee his club would command but valued at just £2.7m according to Transfermarkt, it’s likely that it wouldn’t be a pricey deal.

The answer to a major issue

Wolves’ first campaign back in the Premier League has been exceptional and there aren’t too many flaws to be found.

However, outside of Jimenez and Diogo Jota, there aren’t a lot of goals in the team and their lack of depth in attack is a concern.

The signing of Lopez would, therefore, be extremely beneficial. After Wolves’ defeat to Burnley last weekend, a match in which Ivan Cavaleiro started over Jimenez it was clear that they needed more attacking quality in the squad. Especially after Helder Costa failed to make an impact from the bench either.

His ability to play either on the wing or through the middle makes the proposition of signing him even more appealing and would give Santo a better option than he already has outside of his main two attackers.

Raul Jimenez is turning it on for Wolves and Mexico right now! He definitely deserves the song in the video below…

It remains a strong possibility that the Midlands club could qualify for the Europa League next season and as a result they will need a considerably larger squad than they boast at present.

Wolves have targeted the likes of Andre Silva but after signing Jimenez it’s possible they may look to buy someone far cheaper.

Hearts: Derby day tomorrow, but Levein is already thinking ahead to next season

Tomorrow sees the Edinburgh derby take place at Tynecastle, with the hosts knowing that a win against their arch-rivals will put them — temporarily at least — within two points of a Europa League spot.

Equally important, will be the four-point gap they will open up over their noisy neighbours, ahead of the division split which happens after this weekend’s round of matches.

With their remaining games — apart from the clashes against the top two — all against their direct rivals, as it is for the others too, the opportunity to put daylight between themselves and Hibs in sixth, will effectively mean the Europa League chase is between just three teams, albeit for just one likely remaining spot.

But manager, Craig Levein, is already looking towards summer recruitment, in a bid to make sure they can ensure a top three finish next season, in a less frantic way.

The former national team manager knows that he needs to be able to break teams down when they allow Hearts to come on to them, and to do that, he needs to bring in players with an eye for a magic pass, and who can create something from nothing.

He told the Edinburgh Evening News: “It does seem to be that we are better in the games in which teams will have a go at us. It’s harder when the opposition sit in and we have to make the running. That’s something which is really interesting for me for next season.

“We can do both things, which I think we’ll need to do next season. I think we need more creativity in the last third. I think we have players who can do that but we aren’t doing it as regularly as we need to do it. We could do with another couple of creative players in the final third.

Levein’s summer shopping has already started, with Livingston central defender, Craig Halkett, penning an agreement to join Levein, which will become official when his current contract expires at the end of June.

The prospect of bringing some flair to the side should excite fans, and although they are still in the Scottish Cup and fighting for that Europa League spot this season, next year could be one for Hearts fans to savour.

What are your thoughts on the job Craig Levein has done this season? Can they reach the top three this year, starting with a win over rivals Hibs tomorrow? Let us know your thoughts…

Liverpool: Julian Brandt is the Philippe Coutinho replacement Jurgen Klopp should be going for

It seems weird to remember there was a time Philippe Coutinho played for Liverpool.

The Brazilian superstar, who was sold to Barcelona last January for a reported fee £142 million, was meant to be a sale that damaged Liverpool in the long-run and hamper their chances of Premier League glory, yet over a year later and the situation couldn’t be any different.

Whilst Coutinho continues to struggle in La Liga, Liverpool have had one of their best seasons ever in the Premier League as Jurgen Klopp leads to current league table ahead of Manchester City with five games to go, and things could be getting even better for the Reds.

According to BILD, Liverpool are interested in bringing in Julian Brandt to Merseyside this summer by activating his £21.5 million release clause, with Juventus also interested in the 22-year-old playmaker.

With Coutinho constantly linked with a move back to Liverpool, it makes sense why the Reds would be tempted to bring back their former superstar, but if Klopp is to play it smart, the German manager should be bringing in the Bayer Leverkusen player instead.

At this moment in time, Brandt is making Coutinho look like a schoolboy as the Brazilian has struggled to even get a look in at Barcelona and wouldn’t even be considered for an Anfield return with Brandt in the picture. Indeed, the youngster has produced seven goals and 14 assists this season opposed to Coutinho’s 10 goals and five assists, and the crazy thing is that the Bayern Leverkusen man has played eight less games.

Coutinho has lost his magic touch and Brandt appears to have gained it.

At just over £20 million, Brandt would be a bargain for the club, something Liverpool have been brilliant at over the past few seasons with Klopp, and at the young age of 22, the playmaker has plenty of time to develop into a better player than he already is.

His versatility to play as a number 10 as well as a winger makes Brandt a player who Klopp could get a lot of use out of for the fee Liverpool will be paying for him, meaning he can slot in for any system and formation utilised by the German manager.

Coutinho returning to Anfield might seem like a fairytale story, but the reality is that Liverpool needs to move on from their player and realise that Brandt is the one who Klopp should be going for.

Liverpool fans, would you take Brandt as a summer signing? Let us know!
