Chelsea have to make a change to keep this star

With Chelsea’s disappointing elimination from the Champions League in midweek to Paris Saint-Germain, it is guaranteed that Roman Abramovich and Jose Mourinho will be even more motivated to be crowned European champions next season.

To achieve this, summer expenditure seems likely, but keeping the current star-studded Blues squad together will also be critical to the West London club’s chances of success.

Given the amount of money that Chelsea’s stars are paid and the likelihood of the Premier League title this term, seeing a first-team player leave seems unlikely.

However, the only real concern surrounds Branislav Ivanovic and his expiring contract.

The Serbian defender’s current deal culminates in the summer of 2016, with reports in the press that he has been offered an extension to take him up to the following summer.

There is no doubting Ivanovic’s importance to the Blues; versatile enough to play at either full-back or centre-back, powerful and determined, he is arguably the Premier League’s best defender.

However, an internal policy of offering players over the age of 30 a mere one-year extension could well isolate Ivanovic and play a negative part in ongoing contract negotiations.

The likes of Didier Drogba and Ashley Cole have left Stamford Bridge in the past, turning down 12-month extension options from the Blues in the process, and the last thing that Chelsea want is to enter a similar situation with Ivanovic.

The Serbian is seemingly confident enough at securing a new deal that he does not even need to employ an agent for assistance, but it would be somewhat surprising if the star is satisfied with extending his current contract for only one more year.

With the likes of Real Madrid accredited with a reported interest and a vast number of suitors surely available if Ivanovic did consider leaving Stamford Bridge, the 31-year-old could practically pick his next employers if he so wished.

As the Eastern European shows no signs of ageing and continues to contribute massively to the Blues’ chances of silverware, Chelsea will be tempted to break their one-year policy for over 30s this time round.

The last thing that the club needs is uncertainty and constant media speculation over the future of one of their top performers, similar to the will-he, won’t-he saga that has played out surrounding John Terry and Frank Lampard in recent seasons.

Chelsea will maintain that no single player is more important than the club – and that is true.

However, to keep Ivanovic happy, motivated and playing to his best, offering him a longer-term contract makes sense.

Replacing the Serbian enforcer with a player of the same stature, physicality, awareness and experience would take some doing, regardless of their Russian owner’s endless financial reserves.

When young players are thrown into the breach the saying ‘if you’re good enough, you’re old enough’ is often applied – the same applies here to Chelsea’s integral elder statesman, who deserves a longer term deal as a reward for stellar performances.

Mourinho adamant PFA Team of the Year should be all Chelsea players

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho believes that the Professional Footballers’ Association Team of the Year should have all come from his team, before insisting that the selected squad does not have the capability to win the Premier League, Mirror reports.

Despite having no less than six players – Eden Hazard, Diego Costa, John Terry, Gary Cahill, Branislav Ivanovic, and Nemanja Matic – in the all-star lineup, Mourinho was bewildered that star midfielder Cesc Fabregas was omitted even though the Spaniard made an incredible 16 assists during the campaign.

WANT MORE? >> Chelsea Transfer News | Latest Transfer News

‘The Special One’ did admit that he was biased, but when asked whether there should have been more Blues players in the squad, he replied that all of them should have gained the recognition.

He said: “Yes, all. I think so. But I know that this is the Chelsea manager speaking, and obviously I respect every one of the players in that team, and especially everyone that chose.

“The players from the other teams have the right to choose. Obviously great players were in that team, and great players were outside that team.

“But just as an example, the season Fabregas is doing, the number of assists and quality of his game – not to be there is a bit strange.

He then added that the selected team – which included Manchester United’s David De Gea, Southampton ace Ryan Bertrand, Liverpool’s Philippe Coutinho, Arsenal winger Alexis Sanchez, and Tottenham’s PFA Young Player of the Year Harry Kane – can’t win the title due to a lack of balance.

“And I think that team wouldn’t win the Premier League. Because that team is four defenders, Matic and only five to attack.

“So it’s a team without any balance. That team is missing a midfield player, and I think that midfield player should be Fabregas.

“But this is not important. I look now as a fan not a manager. It looks like I’m in a pub discussing things that aren’t important, because the important thing is to be champions.”

Chelsea will clinch the title if they manage to beat Leicester City this Wednesday and then Crystal Palace on the weekend.

This is the West Ham youngster with a bright future ahead of him

West Ham have a rising star in the making as one of their youngsters was made captain of the U17 England team.

Sixteen-year-old Reece Oxford signed a professional contract with the Hammers in January and the defender will lead out the team in Tuesday night’s match against Spain.

The team’s defence of their UEFA European Championship title came to a crashing halt last week after a disappointing 1-0 loss to Russia but their next game is still equally important. It will determine who will qualify for the FIFA U17 World Cup in Chile later in the year.

Described as a “wonder kid” Oxford has pushed himself close to a long-awaited first team debut for the Hammers and in April he scored a fantastic goal against Manchester United’s U21s side in a 3-2 defeat. The goal pushed him into the West Ham news feed and as he had been regularly training with the first team it was hoped manager Sam Allardyce may give him his debut before the end of the season, but with only one game to go this is looking more unlikely.

Many fans have been calling on Big Sam to use some of the talented youngsters the club has in the run-up to the end of the season. The Hammers have been dropping points all over the place and have won only two games since Christmas, which has seen them plummet to 11th in the Premier League table.

While fans should still be happy with their position it seems a bit of a disappointment compared to the beginning of the season. With very little to play for in the table after it was clear they would not get a Europa League spot (unless through the Financial Fair Play League), many called for Allardyce to bring in some of the young players to give them a chance especially as some of the key players were struggling with form and fatigue.

Allarcye believes that previous attempts to bring in the young squad players a chance have always backfired. He said: “It is always difficult for me.

“If we were in a better position with our results it would have been a good thing to look at the odd player. But the pressure with us at the moment to get results means it would be difficult for me to do.

“If you put a youngster in and lose you get criticised, the youngster might get criticised, so it is difficult.”

While it is unlikely that we will see him in the Premier League for the Hammers. final game against relegation contenders Newcastle, it is certain that fans will see more of him as he develops as a player.

With him already playing international football and showing an impressive leadership quality in his interviews about the European Championships in Bulgaria, it is hard to believe that he is still so young.

Why Liverpool ‘should’ risk this striker against Stoke

The Premier League campaign starts this weekend, with all eyes on a Liverpool team post Raheem Sterling and Steven Gerrard.

Brendan Rodgers’ men have moved quickly in the transfer market this summer to make up for the disappointment of last season, which culminated in an embarrassing 6-1 humbling at the hands of Stoke on the final day of the campaign.

Ironically, the Merseysiders return to the scene of the crime this weekend, as the Reds face Mark Hughes’ men again at the Britannia Stadium.

With no Liverpool player reaching double figures in the goals tally last term, Rodgers has looked to bolster his attacking options before 2015-16 and the club’s forward line will have an entirely different look about it this season.

[ffc-gal cat=”liverpool” no=”5″]

Much of the expectation will be placed on Christian Benteke’s shoulders, with the powerhouse Belgian becoming the historic club’s second most-expensive player after the Reds activated his £32.5million Aston Villa release clause last month.

Benteke will hope to avoid a similar fate to the only man that has cost the Anfield team more, Andy Carroll, and to do so will want to prove any doubters wrong with a quick start to life at his new club.

However, the former Genk hitman is currently not at 100 per cent fitness, with question marks over whether Brendan Rodgers will throw his new striker directly into the mixer.

There certainly are other options, such as Divock Origi or Danny Ings, while fellow big-money addition Roberto Firmino could well operate as the furthest man forward if he is deemed fit enough to feature.

That said, despite Rodgers having more options in his attack than he did last season, fielding Benteke from the start against Stoke makes sense.

The powerhouses Belgian showed a glimpse of what he is capable of with a spectacular strike in a pre-season win over Swindon recently, while Rodgers has been full of praise for the striker’s displays in training.

As such, it looks like Benteke’s confidence is high – which is something that Liverpool would be best advised to tap into.

During his time at Villa, although injuries took their toll also, it was evident when the centre forward’s self-belief was either high or low, with the striker unplayable when he was in the mood.

If there is a chance that Benteke is in similar pomp at the moment, he could well be the man to reverse a 6-1 defeat into a victory.

Similarly, facing Stoke is always a physical challenge and having someone of the Belgium international’s stature and physique leading the line shows that the visitors are not ready to be intimidated like they were in May.

Ultimately, Rodgers will have to live and die by his transfer decisions this season, with Benteke’s fortunes potentially dictating whether Liverpool’s campaign is a success or failure.

As such, getting the Belgian into the team from the beginning of the season makes sense.

In Focus: Sakho to leave West Ham for Premier League rival

According to Wales Online, Swansea City are keen to sign West Ham United forward Diafra Sakho during this month’s transfer window.

What’s the story?

It is not exactly breaking news that Sakho wants out of West Ham this month. The forward came close to leaving the Hammers on transfer deadline day after expressing a desire to leave, but ultimately stayed with the Premier League club.

Sakho’s agent Thierno Seydi recently revealed that his client was still keen on leaving West Ham, and would push for a move during the January transfer window.

According to Wales Online, new Swansea boss Carlos Carvalhal believes that Sakho has the capabilities of firing the Welsh outfit clear of the relegation zone in the second half of the 2017-18 campaign.

Swansea are expected to be active this month as the board prepare to back the recently appointed Carvalhal, and it appears that Sakho, who is valued at £9m by transfermarkt.co.uk, could be heading for Wales.

What has happened to Sakho at West Ham?

Sakho has made 14 Premier League appearances for West Ham this season, but he has not started a single match in the top flight during the 2017-18 campaign, and has managed just two league goals.

The Senegal international actually netted 10 Premier League goals during his first season with the Hammers, but managed just five during the 2015-16 season, and just one Premier League goal last term after struggling with injury.

The 28-year-old’s record of 18 Premier League goals in 62 appearances is far from disastrous when considering that a lot of those came off the bench, and there is no question that he has the credentials needed to find the back of the net in the top flight.

Swansea need proven Premier League performers in a bid to move clear of the bottom three, and it does appear that West Ham are prepared to sell due to the abundance of options they have in the final third of the field.

Southampton fans react as club lines up Daniel Sturridge loan deal

According to reports in The Telegraph, Southampton are hoping to sign Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge on loan during the January transfer window, and Saints fans have been quick to have their say on the rumour. The Telegraph says that Mauricio Pellegrino wants to strengthen his struggling team in the New Year after selling Virgil van Dijk to the Reds for £75m, and he would be keen on bringing a proven goalscorer like Sturridge to St Mary’s on a temporary deal until the end of the season. The south coast outfit certainly need some help in attack after scoring just 20 goals in 20 Premier League matches so far this term, and with 75 English top flight goals during his career the 28-year-old could be the answer to their goalscoring woes.Southampton supporters took to social media to give their thoughts on the story, and while one said “I’m actually desperate to sign Sturridge”, another wasn’t so keen and said he is “such a greedy player who doesn’t pass the ball when he should”.Here is just a selection of the Twitter reaction…

In Focus: Securing best Scottish talent is key for Rangers

As reported by The Daily Record, Rangers are looking to negotiate the transfer of Hamilton midfielder Greg Docherty this weekend.

What’s the story?

Graeme Murty’s side have already made a number of signings during this month’s transfer window, potentially transforming their starting eleven in the second half of the season.

However, it seems Rangers’ business isn’t done quite yet, as they prepare to finalise the signing of Scotland U21 international Greg Docherty.

The Daily Record report that the Ibrox side are locked in talks with Hamilton in an effort to sign the midfielder, but the Lanarkshire side won’t budge on their £600,000 valuation.

If they really are intent on bringing him to Glasgow then they’ll have to act soon, with the paper also reporting that there’s interest from the likes of Cardiff City and Preston North End.

Talent drain

Rangers have seen far too many talented Scottish players leave the country and move to England in recent years and it’s important they secure the futures of the most exciting youngsters before that lure takes hold.

Docherty has shown enough potential to justify his reported £600,000 valuation and the Light Blues shouldn’t be messing about trying to get him on the cheap when it’s clear Accies will hold firm.

With three goals and six assists so far this season, Docherty has been a key man for Hamilton and at just 21 has plenty of room for improvement too.

After so many loan signings this month, it’s time for the Ibrox side to show a bit of decisiveness and meet his valuation.

Former Leeds United coach out of a job, fans react

During Garry Monk’s time in charge of Leeds United last season, the 38-year-old has assistant coach Pep Clotet by his side.

Not long after the former left Elland Road at the end of the 2016-17 campaign, his backroom staff member followed.

Rather than continue working with Monk, Clotet took on the manager’s job at League One outfit Oxford United.

During his spell in charge, the Spaniard oversaw 10 wins, eight draws and 11 defeats in the third tier.

Following back-to-back defeats to Walsall and Bury, a managerial change was made by the U’s, who currently sit 10th in the league table.

Since the news of Clotet’s sacking was announced, Leeds fans have tweeted various reactions.

Some have expressed sympathy for their former assistant coach, while others have rubbed salt into the wound.

A handful have even called on the board to replace current manager Thomas Christiansen with Clotet.

Meanwhile, in the Championship, Leeds reside in 10th place following a four-game winless run.

How Tottenham must line up when they host Arsenal at Wembley on Saturday

Tottenham Hotspur will look to maintain their bid to finish in the top four in the Premier League this season when they host Arsenal in the latest episode of the North London derby at Wembley on Saturday.

Spurs currently lie in fifth position in the standings, but they are just one point behind fourth-place Chelsea and two behind Liverpool following their hugely entertaining 2-2 draw against Jurgen Klopp’s side at Anfield last Sunday.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men were on course to both win and lose the match in the closing stages of the thrilling encounter, before Harry Kane’s last-gasp penalty gave them a share of the spoils after the England international had missed one in the 87th minute.

While the north London bragging rights are up for grabs this weekend, Pochettino will also be well aware that he can extend his side’s advantage over their arch-rivals to seven points with a victory and boost their chances of securing a Champions League spot.

That won’t be his only concern though, and with a huge European trip to Juventus to come on Tuesday night the 45-year-old will be considering how he is going to utilise his squad, and he may be considering making some alterations to his XI.

Here is how Tottenham must line up against Arsenal on Saturday, ahead of Hugo Lloris in goal…

Defence

Pochettino has plenty of big decisions to make in his back four for the visit of the Gunners on Saturday, with the main one being whether he decides to start Toby Alderweireld or not.

The Belgium international completed the full 90 minutes on his return from a hamstring injury against Newport County on Wednesday night, but the Argentine boss should choose to save him for the trip to Juventus instead rather than risking him three times in six days.

Davinson Sanchez is more than capable of dealing with Gunners striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang despite his struggles at Anfield last weekend, and his pace could be key at Wembley.

Elsewhere, Jan Vertonghen looks to be a certain starter while Ben Davies and Kieran Trippier could get the nod at full-back after Danny Rose and Serge Aurier started against the League Two side in midweek.

Midfield

Pochettino has another important choice to make in the middle of the park, where Mousa Dembele, Eric Dier and Victor Wanyama look to be battling for the two midfield spots.

Dier endured a nightmare first 45 minutes against Liverpool after his under-hit back-pass was capitalised on by Mo Salah, but he did improve after the break.

Substitute Wanyama made an instant impact with a stunning strike though, and he has pushed himself in contention to start against the Gunners.

Having played 78 minutes against Newport in midweek however, Pochettino would be better off saving him for the trip to Turin and keep with Dembele and Dier in the middle against Arsene Wenger’s men.

Tottenham’s front four pick themselves at the moment if everyone is fit and if they don’t have a huge Champions League match just around the corner, and that should change Pochettino’s thinking on Saturday.

Christian Eriksen has started all but one of Spurs’ 26 Premier League matches this season, and it would perhaps be a good idea for the Denmark international to start the Arsenal match on the bench with the important clash against Juventus just around the corner.

It’s not as though Pochettino doesn’t have the options to replace the Dane either, with Erik Lamela starting to get back to his best and making an impact on the pitch after he won the penalty that saw the north London outfit secure a point at Anfield, before he found the net in the 2-0 win against Newport County on Wednesday.

Lamela would either start on the left or the right-hand side of the three behind talisman Harry Kane, with Dele Alli in the middle and Son Heung-Min on the opposite flank in order to cause big problems for the Gunners defence.

In Focus: Milinkovic-Savic could be a massive midfield force at Man United

As reported by The Daily Mirror, Manchester United are considering making a big money move for Lazio midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic.

What’s the story?

While the Red Devils managed to put together a statement performance against Chelsea on Sunday, driven by their excellent midfield display, question marks have lingered about the direction of their midfield all season.

With Michael Carrick set to retire and Marouane Fellaini on the brink of a summer exit, Jose Mourinho could do with another stellar signing in the middle of the park if they’re to compete for major honours next term.

One name on the shortlist, according to The Mirror, is Lazio man Sergej Milinkovic-Savic.

The paper say that Man United are one of a number of top clubs tracking his progress this season, with his transfer expected to cost around £80m.

Is he the player Mourinho needs to complete his midfield puzzle?

[ad_pod ]

Worth that kind of money?

Milinkovic-Savic is a dynamic midfield all-rounder who is having an excellent season in Italian football, netting 11 times and assisting three more. That’s a significant contribution to a Lazio side who are pushing for a European spot in the Serie A table.

Alongside Paul Pogba he could be form a ferocious partnership, especially if the duo were anchored by a purely defensive minded teammate like Nemanja Matic.

Just 22 years old, he has a massive future ahead of him and if Manchester United can do a deal, he’s definitely a player they should be looking to bring to Old Trafford this summer.
