Afridi targets World Cup momentum

Shahid Afridi said a good performance in the two-match series against New Zealand would build into Pakistan’s preparations for the 50-over World Cup

ESPNcricinfo staff04-Dec-2014There might not be much relevance to a Twenty20 contest right now, but Shahid Afridi said a good performance in the two-match series against New Zealand would build into Pakistan’s preparations for the 50-over World Cup.Pakistan have had a tough time in one-day cricket over the past 12 months. They lost to Sri Lanka in the Asia Cup final in February, and conceded a three-match series to the same opposition in the UAE. Recently, they were beaten by a young Australia side 3-0. But an upswing in their Test form has put the team in a good frame of mind.”I think the boys are feeling very confident ahead of the series and my side is a very well-balanced one,” Afridi said. “You can’t compare the T20s with the ODI cricket. It’s a totally different format. But I think a victory, and to have a winning combination is very important. You feel more confident after a victory. Each victory and each game before the World Cup is important to us.”Afridi also voiced confidence in his bowling resources. Umar Gul, who has recovered from knee injury and appears fit for international cricket after going through six first-class matches in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy. Wahab Riaz is also making a comeback after hurting his knee during the second ODI against Australia in October. Since then, he’s played two four-day games during which he bowled 68 overs.”Both Umar and Wahab have performed very well for Pakistan in the past,” Afridi said. “They are both looking very fit and they seem to be in good form. I am very happy to see them in the squad.”With Mohammad Hafeez under scrutiny for his action and Saeed Ajmal – the top wicket-taker in T20s – suspended from bowling, Afridi sees an opportunity for fringe players to shine.”Our spinners have done very well despite Ajmal’s absence and played a very important role in our wins. I believe that Pakistan has got good bowling strength. We have bowlers sitting who are waiting for their chance to get into the team. It’s not as if we are struggling to find another spinner. I think we have always been blessed with good bowling combinations.”

From Beckham to Figo: The most shocking football signings of the 21st century

Goal counts down the transfers that have surprised over the years in the world's most popular sport

The appointment of college football coach Ted Lasso as Richmond FC's new manager might be one of the more bizarre signings in football, but the sport's history is littered with shock transfers – successful and infamous…

Getty20Ronaldinho – AC Milan to Flamengo

In 2011, Ronaldinho had a whole host of admirers when he was leaving AC Milan.

His transfer to Flamengo was not exactly a shock as he returned to his homeland, but the real head-scratching moment was the fact that Brazilian rivals Gremio were so sure they had they had re-signed their former player that they held a celebration with their fans before Flamengo came in and snatched him from under their eyes.

Andrea Pirlo was no stranger to a shocking switch, having first traded Inter for AC Milan and later joined Juventus on a free transfer, prompting Gianluigi Buffon to claim "God exists".

However, in 2020, he went one step further, taking over as coach of Juventus's Under-23 side without any coaching experience before being promoted to the top job just a week later following the sacking of Maurizio Sarri.

French winger Julien Faubert had an unexpected career journey. He went from Cannes to Bordeaux to West Ham before stunning the world when Real Madrid came in with a deadline day loan offer for him in January 2009.

He played just twice for Los Blancos, even being pictured sleeping on the bench during a game and missing training as he got his day off mixed up.

Getty17Edgar Davids – Retired to Barnet

In 2012, former Ajax, Juventus and Netherlands legend Edgar Davids came out of retirement to play for his local London club.

But rather than a Premier League giant, the Champions League winner was appointed joint player-coach at… League Two side Barnet.

There, he wore the shirt number 1 and would not travel to away games if the team was required to stay in a hotel overnight.

Barnet were relegated but Davids stayed on and managed the team in the Conference. He left in 2014 and has not had a managerial job since.

Ten Hag claims he has backing of United playersNegative stories emerged after Newcastle defeatManager says comebacks show unityWHAT HAPPENED?

The manager is facing renewed criticism following the Red Devils' meek surrender to Newcastle. He has also had to deal with several stories claiming he is losing the support of some players, which led to the club banning four journalists from Tuesday's press conference. However, Ten Hag has insisted that the players are still supporting him.

"Oh yes, I am sure, you can see for instance the comeback against Brentford, the Burnley game, the Fulham game, every time the team is there, showed great character, great determination, resilience so we are together," Ten Hag said. "You can see you can’t play such great football as we did recently without unity."

United had won five of their previous six league games before facing Newcastle, but were brought back down to earth at St James' Park and were hugely fortunate to only lose 1-0. The defeat continued United's dreadful run against teams in the top half of the Premier League table.

DID YOU KNOW?

United have scored just 16 league goals this season. Only five teams in the Premier League – Crystal Palace, Everton, Luton, Burnley and Sheffield United – have scored fewer. Ten Hag's side are currently down in seventh as a result, nine points adrift of leaders Arsenal.

Kylian Mbappe is still playing Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid for fools: Superstar striker is the most powerful player in the world

The Frenchman doesn't just have two elite clubs dancing to his own tune – he also has an incredible level of control over the entire transfer market

Unlike nearly everyone else connected with Paris Saint-Germain, Kylian Mbappe was in good spirits during Saturday's Ligue 1 clash with Lorient. While those seated around him at Parc des Princes were bitterly frustrated watching the champions try – and fail – to break down the team that finished 10th last season, Mbappe was spotted several times laughing and joking with new PSG signing Ousmane Dembele. And why not? The game did nothing other than prove just how important he is to PSG.

The day before, Luis Enrique had stated that he was still hoping to see an amicable resolution to Mbappe's contract stand-off with Nasser Al-Khelaifi & Co – but the new coach pointedly added: "The philosophy of this club is very clear: that the club is above everything and I share it 100 percent."

Undoubtedly admirable and heartfelt sentiments on the part of Luis Enrique – but simply not applicable in this case. The events of the last few days have proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that Kylian Mbappe is bigger than Paris Saint-Germain. Right now, in fact, he's probably the most powerful player in the world.

(C)GettyImagesAcutely aware of his own worth

The morning after being given what must have felt like a terrifying glimpse of a future without Mbappe, PSG announced that the France captain had been welcomed back into the fold with open arms.

To casual observers, that would have looked like a remarkable turn of events. PSG, remember, had seemingly stood up to Mbappe at long last. When a letter confirming his intention to leave the club in 2024 was mysteriously – and conveniently – leaked to the press, Al-Khelaifi insisted that Mbappe would have to find himself a new club before the close of the transfer window. PSG understandably had no intention of losing the world's most valuable player on a free transfer next summer.

Things turned so toxic that PSG rather pettily took down Mbappe posters in and around their stadium, stopped selling his shirt in the club shop, while also resorting to the mother of all guilt trips by claiming that if Mbappe leaving for nothing would result in a "wave of redundancies".

They even accepted an offer from Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal for Mbappe, in an attempt to force his hand. Mbappe, though, refused to even discuss the transfer. Why? Because he can. He's the man in demand, the player holding all the aces here – and he knows it. This is a young, generational talent who is acutely aware of his own worth, particularly to PSG.

Advertisement(C)Getty Images'Cornerstrone of the club's project'

Al-Khelaifi made Mbappe "the cornerstone of the club's project" last year for a reason. They are utterly dependent upon him, and not from a sporting perspective. His goals can be replaced. As former sporting director Leonardo pointed out, Liverpool, Bayern Munich and Chelsea have all won the Champions League since Mbappe joined PSG – so it is possible to win the trophy without him.

But PSG's superstar-obsessed owners clearly do not believe that is possible for a club with no competition in France to maintain relevance on the global stage without a player of Mbappe's stature – one that is immensely popular with young fans from every background – and certainly not at this moment in time.

With Lionel Messi and Neymar having left this summer, Mbappe is their one remaining icon – and the one most important to their brand. They could build a better, more cohesive and functioning team with the money made from selling Mbappe, one capable of finally realising their dream of conquering Europe, but without the World Cup winner, they would just not be as attractive a proposition in terms of marketing and commercial opportunities, or even just in terms of attracting social media followers.

Mbappe and his team know all that, which is why they could afford to simply sit tight and call PSG's bluff.

Getty ImagesMaking Madrid wait too

Because it's not as if Real Madrid are going anywhere. Mbappe led Florentino Perez down the garden path last summer, and yet the Spaniard still clearly wants to sign him. He is even prepared to wait until next year to do so.

Again, though, Mbappe will decide if or when he moves to Madrid. He may yet sign an extension at PSG, but if he does, it will be once again done on his terms. Indeed, do not be surprised if he manages to 'persuade' PSG to put a 2024 buy-out clause into the agreement – and for a fee that he knows Madrid will be willing to meet.

In that sense, Mbappe is displaying an element of control over not only his career – but also the transfer market – that we have never seen before.

He has been a little fortunate in that regard. Cristiano Ronaldo had to move to Saudi Arabia because nobody wanted him in Europe anymore. Lionel Messi was forced out of Camp Nou on account of Barcelona's financial problems. Mbappe, though, is in a position to do as he pleases, and while he decides what's best for him, several other players are stuck in the departures lounge. If Mbappe stays at PSG, Madrid will simply have to sign a goalscorer this summer. And PSG, of course, would need to sign a replacement if he were to leave.

Either way, Mbappe is the potential catalyst for a chain reaction that would see a succession of forwards switch clubs.

imago imagesSpineless PSG panic under the pressure

Not that he'll care about that, of course. For now, his sole focus will be on seeing what else PSG are willing to offer him to sign a contract extension. They bent over backwards for him last summer, while this time around they have replaced Neymar, with whom Mbappe fell out, with his France team-mate and good friend Dembele. More Mbappe-approved moves yet be made at the Parc des Princes.

Of course, the club have tried to make out that a relationship that appeared broken has now been mended thanks to "very constructive, positive talks" between the two parties led to the player being "reinstated into first-team training" on Sunday morning. In truth, though, a desperate and spineless PSG panicked under the pressure and decided to give Mbappe everything he wanted once again.

In the era of player power, not one has more than Kylian Mbappe.

Wrexham beaten by Accrington last time out'Heavy' celebrations didn't go unnoticedBarnett eyes victory this weekendGOALWHAT HAPPENED?

Accrington secured a 2-0 win over Wrexham back in November and wildly celebrated the victory at Crown Ground. Now, wing-back Barnett, who missed that game due to a knee injury, wants to settle a score when they meet at the Racecourse on Saturday.

AdvertisementGettyWHAT RYAN BARNETT SAID

He told Welsh publication, The Leader: "I was injured for that game but the lads said Accrington celebrated quite heavy after that win. It's not something that you take personally. When we win games, we celebrate so you have got to take it both ways. It would be nice to get one over on them so bring it on. That's what you get when you play for this club, everyone wants to beat us. Since I have been here, we have almost used it as a challenge. We know every team is going to give 110 per cent because they want to beat Wrexham but we will be ready for it."

Getty ImagesTHE BIGGER PICTURE

This fixture has a little bit of niggle between the two sides as a war or words took place in the reverse fixture over Accrington's ticket prices. That, the "heavy" celebrations, and the fact that Wrexham could go back into the automatic promotion spots if results go their way is plenty motivation for the Red Dragons.

Middlesex prepared for Rogers' departure

Angus Fraser described himself as “chuffed to bits” after Chris Rogers was included in Australia’s Ashes squad

Alan Gardner24-Apr-2013Angus Fraser could have been forgiven the sort of intemperate outburst usually reserved by fast bowlers for fielders who drop catches but Middlesex’s director of cricket, and a man who knows what it is like to contest an Ashes series, was not going to spoil Chris Rogers’ day. Fraser described himself as “chuffed to bits” after Rogers was included in Australia’s Ashes squad and said plans were in place for the county to sign a replacement overseas player.Rogers is Middlesex’s Championship captain and opener, as well as their most prolific run-scorer for the past two seasons, but his involvement in the Ashes means he will be unavailable for at least four games – against Warwickshire, Sussex, Durham and Derbyshire – between July 10 and August 25. Middlesex have won both their opening fixtures to make them the subject of early title chatter and Fraser was confident they can cope without Rogers during a crucial period of the season.”We were prepared for it,” Fraser said. “I know Chris said he thought his international days had been over but we had given it some thought and realised over the winter, watching Australia’s results, that he could well come into contention. So we have been speaking to other people and had other things in place and we’re now following those up so hopefully we’ll be able to cater for Chris being away.”The Ashes is quite short and sharp so, looking at the County Championship, Chris would probably only miss four games, which means he would then come back for our last four fixtures, hopefully. We’ve got contingency plans in place but we’re delighted for him. Some Middlesex members might feel ‘We’ve lost our captain, someone who’s been integral over the last two years’ but we want everyone at the club to achieve what they want to achieve on a cricket field. We’re chuffed to bits for Chris and want to see him do well.”Rogers has played one previous Test for Australia, against India in 2008, but his form in England, where he has scored more than 9,000 runs for four counties, prompted Australia to turn to the 35-year-old again; two weeks ago, he made a half-century in each innings as Middlesex won at Trent Bridge, venue for the first Ashes Test. Should he be involved for the whole series, he could conceivably return for Middlesex’s Championship fixture against Somerset, which begins three days after the conclusion of the fifth Test at The Oval. While Middlesex would not be drawn on who his replacement would be. Adam Voges, who was also an outside bet for Ashes inclusion, has been signed for the FLt20 and extending that deal is a possibility. Voges bats in the middle-order, as does Eoin Morgan, who will return from the IPL towards the end of May, but Joe Denly is capable of opening, while Paul Stirling, Adam Rossington and Adam London provide options from within the second XI.”We’ve obviously had a very good start to the season and Chris has played an important role in that,” Fraser said. “We’ve got another six games before he departs, I believe, and that takes us to halfway through the season. We want to do well in those six games and the person that comes in to replace Chris while he’s away, we’ll hope he can fill the void. You can lose players through injury – we’ve got a squad and expect some of our younger players to come in and perform, should any openings appear. We’re hopeful that we’re not going to be short of a class batsman for any part of the season.”

Bangladesh have talent, need self-belief – Law

Stuart Law, the new Bangladesh coach, has said his aim is to build a self-reliant Bangladesh team that can help each other and rely less on the natural talent of individuals

Mohammad Isam18-Jul-2011Stuart Law, the new Bangladesh coach, has said his aim is to build a self-reliant Bangladesh team that can help each other and rely less on the natural talent of individuals. Having arrived in Dhaka on Monday morning, along with new fielding coach Jason Swift, Law told his first press conference as coach that he needed to work with the team before identifying areas where they needed improvement, but felt a little more professionalism would help.”I’ve seen Bangladesh play a lot of good cricket. They’re very talented,” Law said at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka on Monday. “The captain [Shakib Al Hasan] was rated No. 1 all-rounder in the world not long ago; Tamim Iqbal is a destructive top-order batsman. Maybe there are areas away from cricket in which they need to improve. A little bit more professionalism maybe, but I haven’t seen them up close to see what makes them tick.”Maybe it’s not about natural talent but a bit more mental toughness, self-belief. That’s what I can impart. The bigger you are the harder you fall. We are a minnow which is a good thing because we go into every game as an underdog and there’s nothing to lose.”Law has played against both Shakib and Tamim; he represented Lancashire and MCC against Bangladesh A in 2008. He will start work on July 20 when Bangladesh play a practice game in Mirpur and his first assignment will be to prepare the team for their tour of Zimbabwe which starts with a tour game on July 30. He said his approach to the side would be to initially observe and see what made the players tick.”I like to observe rather than sit down and tell them what to do. I have a 9-year-old son and he doesn’t like to do what I tell him either. I’ve learnt over my time, the more the players want to do it, the better for the team. It’s not about what I want, it’s about what they want. The tour of Zimbabwe should be a good one, in conditions that we are comfortable playing on. It should be a good way to get into the role.”In the first weeks, the job will be to put names to faces. Once we get into that, we want to make Bangladesh cricket team a team they think they should be. It’s about what they expect from themselves. If they believe they should be the seventh, sixth or fifth best team in the world, that’s where we should aim at first. If they all perform at their optimum, the sky could be the limit for this team.”Law played the role of interim coach for Sri Lanka on their recent tour of England but chose to join Bangladesh after the ODI series ended as they were offering him a permanent job. “Sri Lanka were not in a position to offer an extension in the contract. So there was no job on the table from them. Bangladesh had contacted my management company to seek the possibility of joining. Having been here and knowing the passion that Bangladesh people have for cricket and their team, I saw it as a great opportunity for me while I’m still young as a coach.”Hopefully I can impart the knowledge that I’ve gathered from my 31 seasons of cricket and make the players as good as they can be.”

Hampshire prevail in thriller at The Rose Bowl

Champions Warwickshire suffered defeat at the start of their Clydesdale Bank 40 campaign, narrowly beaten by three runs by Hampshire at the Rose Bowl

ESPNcricinfo staff24-Apr-2011
Scorecard
Champions Warwickshire suffered defeat at the start of their Clydesdale Bank 40 campaign, narrowly beaten by three runs by Hampshire at the Rose Bowl. Chasing 275 for victory, Chris Woakes needed to hit the last ball of the match from Dominic Cork for four to win. But Woakes could only hit it back to the bowler and Hampshire had completed victory in a high-scoring match on a batsman-friendly wicket.Ultimately Warwickshire were left to regret the final over of the Hampshire innings, in which Boyd Rankin conceded 24 to Neil McKenzie including a six and four fours. Hampshire, who lost the toss, went from 250 for 5 at the start of the last over to 274 for 5 with Rankin finishing with unflattering figures of 0 for 57 from seven overs.South African McKenzie was Hampshire’s top scorer with an undefeated 87 which included nine fours and a six. Johann Myburgh contributed a useful 64 at the top of the innings asWarwickshire captain Jim Troughton had cause to regret his decision to field first. His doubts must have increased as Warwickshire slumped to 48 for 3 and then 89 for 4 in reply when Troughton was caught at slip for 25 in the 19th over. Varun Chopra began the Warwickshire revival, carrying on his outstanding form in the County Championship by making 54 before being run out by Cork.Darren Maddy added a useful 49 before he too was run out by wicketkeeper Michael Bates and the target always looked just beyond the champions. They required 55 off the final five overs and 32 off the last three, but Rikki Clarke kept his side in the match with an aggressive 59 off 38 balls before being stumped.Keeper Richard Johnson kept Woakes company as the England hopeful indulged in some big hitting. He struck three sixes in his unbeaten 34 off 21 balls but experienced former England pace bowler Simon Jones dismissed Johnson with the last ball of the 39th to set up the last-over thriller.Woakes and Rankin needed 14 off the last over from Cork and the former raised hopes by drilling the penultimate ball for six, but the Hampshire captain kept his nerve and his team held on.

Eight maidens to victory

In a series speckled with Indian wickets, the spell Peter Siddle remembered most fondly was one that passed without reward

Daniel Brettig at Adelaide Oval28-Jan-2012In a series speckled with Indian wickets, the spell Peter Siddle remembered most fondly was one that passed without reward. On the third evening of the SCG Test, he and Ben Hilfenhaus delivered eight consecutive maidens between them, squeezing Sachin Tendulkar and Gautam Gambhir with precision pace bowling of the highest standard on the same pitch Michael Clarke had used to construct his 329.While no wickets were forthcoming during the spell, Siddle remembered it as emblematic of Australia’s bowling across the series, which at times reached heights not even the bowlers themselves might have thought possible. The bowling coach Craig McDermott has moulded the attack in his own image, and its combination of speed, swing and stamina has been a rare sight.”Just the way individually everyone has stuck to their guns and played their role perfectly at each end when bowling has been superb,” Siddle said after claiming the match award in Adelaide. “The batters have set us up at times as well and we just knew we had to go out there and be patient.”I think the best bowling spell we had was probably in Sydney when me and Hilfy bowled a partnership, we didn’t get any wickets but we bowled [eight] overs straight of maidens. I think that just summed up the summer and what we wanted to achieve. In every match that we bowled, that is what we wanted to go about it. That was perfect and showed what we were all about.”Siddle proved himself to be the rugged heart of the Australian attack, a position never more evident than on another late afternoon earlier in the series. Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid had pushed India into a position of power when Siddle burst one through Dravid’s defences, then stood crestfallen when replays revealed a no-ball. Redoubling his efforts, he proceeded to puncture Tendulkar’s defence before stumps, a mighty blow for India and source of a surge of confidence among the hosts.”I had to turn it around or else the bowling coach and captain would have really been on my back,” Siddle said, grinning. “Getting a wicket off a no ball and then getting one quickly around the corner is always pleasing, it makes everyone a little bit happier.”But I think any wicket, it doesn’t matter who you get, any Test wicket is obviously a good achievement it doesn’t matter if it’s Sachin or a Yadav at No.11, you want to get all 10 and you need to get 20 for the match, it doesn’t matter which one you get, as long as you get all 20 like we have been.”Siddle said the partnerships established by the bowlers had been a major part of the attack’s improvement on last summer, when England’s batsmen made both he and Hilfenhaus look ordinary by comparison.”There is always a lot of emphasis on batting partnerships and our big emphasis coming into this summer was bowling partnerships,” he said. “We went about that spot on and no matter what attack we had, we stuck to our guns, we did the job, and that was our plan, we didn’t steer away from that.”We knew every morning we rocked up and had to bowl in partnerships and be consistent and be patient and I think it showed in the performances. Everyone that bowled got the job done and lucky enough a few of us got the rewards.”Well as they bowled, however, Australia’s pacemen know there is room to excel further. Aiding this will be the return to fitness of James Pattinson and Pat Cummins, which would allow the national selectors choice of a fearsome arsenal for their next Test assignment in the West Indies.”The way we are going as a unit definitely but we still have room for improvement,” Siddle said. “We are going in the right direction. The good thing about the whole summer was the number of guys who played from [Mitchell] Starc and Jimmy Patto. There was a big turn around from the start of the summer to now but we never changed, we always stuck to the same game plan which was to be patient, bowl in good partnerships and we would get the rewards.”That showed no matter which line-up we put forward on game day we got the job done. At different times each individual got the rewards.”

Akram offers to coach young Pakistan fast bowlers

Wasim Akram, the former Pakistan captain, has offered his services tp the PCB as a part-time bowling coach

Umar Farooq17-Oct-2011Wasim Akram, the former Pakistan captain, has offered his services to the PCB as a part-time bowling coach. Akram said he is ‘ready to work for Pakistan’, but would not be able to do it full-time because of family commitments.”Coaching is a very demanding job,” Akram told reporters at Lahore airport. “It requires a 24/7 [twenty four hours, seven days a week commitment] that I cannot afford while my personal life is a little unsettled. I have two kids to look after. But if they want my services, I am ready to work, but only in my free time.”In the past Akram has turned down the PCB’s offers to coach, citing his responsibilities as a commentator. While he did state that he still doesn’t have much free time, he said that whenever he is in Pakistan, he could juggle his routine to have time to coach fast bowlers.”I have emphasised before that while I am free in Pakistan, give me about 10 to 15 young fast bowlers to coach for a month and I am ready to work. We have outstanding facilities at the National Cricket Academy. Send them to Karachi or I can come to Lahore as well.”When asked about the upcoming series between Pakistan and Sri Lanka in the UAE, Akram said Sri Lanka are a good side but not good enough to beat Pakistan. He pointed out that the bowling attack has struggled without Muttiah Muralitharan, who was responsible for 40 per cent of the team’s wickets during his career.”Sri Lanka is a good team but without Murali [Muralitharan] and [Lasith] Malinga they can’t bowl out Pakistan twice in Test cricket,” Akram said. “I don’t see Pakistan losing unless they play very bad cricket.”Pakistan has experience as Younis [Khan], Misbah [ul Haq] are there in the line-up and another veteran (Shoaib) Malik is back in the side. So with all this, we can understand that the team isn’t lacking any talent. They just need support and need to play good cricket.”Pakistan will play three Tests, five ODIs and a Twenty20 International in the three Emirates of Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah, as Pakistan are currently unable to host international cricket amid security concerns since the attack on the Sri Lanka team in 2009. Given the situation, Akram said the PCB should create an alternative home country for the team.”The idea is to play as much cricket as they can,” Akram said. “If teams aren’t heading to Pakistan, come up with an alternative hub and a system for Pakistan’s home series and give its team more cricket – that will help them to flourish.”
