New Zealand knock over Australia again

New Zealand took their winning streak over Australia to five with a 17-run success in the second Twenty20 in Christchurch

ScorecardAmy Satterthwaite’s 42 saved New Zealand as they recorded another important win•Getty ImagesNew Zealand took their winning streak over Australia to five with a 17-run success in the second Twenty20 in Christchurch. The visitors had a chance to end their drought when they held the hosts to 115 for 9, but they were unable to break free in their reply and were dismissed on the final ball for 98.Australia were a worrying 35 for 3, with Alex Blackwell and Lisa Sthalekar already gone, before Shelley Nitschke and Jess Cameron (16) combined. After Cameron was unfortunate to be lbw trying to sweep Kate Broadmore, Nitschke lifted the pace with a couple of strong boundaries to fine leg and straight down the ground, but they still needed 39 off four overs. The asking rate was too high and Ellyse Perry (6) holed out at long off, giving Sara McGlashan the first of two good catches. Her running take at long-on took care of Nitschke for 45 off 51, ending Australia’s charge, but McGlashan wasn’t finished and her long throw helped run out Rene Farrell. Suzie Bates got 3 for 24, including the final-ball stumping of Julie Hunter, but all the bowlers had kept the pressure on.Amy Satterthwaite, the Player of the Match, revived New Zealand after Perry crashed through the first three batsmen in the opening three overs. Perry was on a hat-trick after having Aimee Watkins lbw from the fourth ball of the day and picked up Maria Fahey to have the hosts 5 for 3 with Blackwell’s sharp catch in the gully.Satterthwaite arrived to save her side and put on 45 with McGlashan (16), who was dropped a couple of times, and was the eighth to fall after collecting 42 from 47 balls. A late push from Rachel Priest (14 off 9) took the team into three figures and gave them a match-winning total.Sthalekar picked up two wickets, including bowling Sophie Devine with a big off break, to support Perry’s 3 for 14. The teams’ next engagement is an ODI at Queenstown before the series concludes with two games in Invercargill.

Newcastle transfer news on Brereton Diaz

Newcastle United are reportedly tracking Ben Brereton Diaz ahead of a potential transfer move.

The Lowdown: The Chilean from Stoke

Born in Stoke-on-Trent, Brereton Diaz changed his national allegiance to Chile in June this year after playing for England at youth level, and has since managed to score three goals in nine games for the South American nation across all competitions (Transfermarkt).

The Chilean press have since raved about him after some of his performances in the Copa America and in World Cup qualifying, with journalist Cecilia Lagos claiming that the 22-year-old is a ‘box killer’ who is ‘so eager’, ‘so active’ and ‘fits like a glove’ (BBC).

Brereton Diaz has become such a popular player in the South American country that he is now the face of their Pepsi commercial (BBC), and his aim is now to help Chile qualify for the World Cup in Qatar next year.

The Latest: Newcastle tracking him

As per Football League World, Newcastle are among a number of clubs who are now tracking Brereton Diaz ahead of a potential move.

Leeds United, Burnley, Brighton & Hove Albion and Southampton have also been tracking the 22-year-old, who has admirers in Sevilla as well.

The Verdict: Wilson alternative?

With 16 goals in just 19 Championship games so far this season (Transfermarkt), Brereton Diaz has shown that he looks capable of making the step up to the Premier League.

The 6 foot 1 striker could be a very nice alternative to Callum Wilson, who does come with injury scares. Notably, Newcastle failed to win and only managed to score four times in the four-game period that he missed earlier in the campaign (Transfermarkt).

Thus, when Wilson is injured or finds himself out of form, Brereton Diaz would be a valuable understudy to have, and the two could even play alongside one another if he is particularly impressing Eddie Howe.

He might also attract a new Chilean following to Tyneside, and he seems like a player who the Toon Army could easily get behind.

Celtic: Reo Hatate deal moves closer

Celtic are closing in on a deal for Kawakasi Frontale left-back Reo Hatate, according to Stephen McGowan for The Scottish Daily Mail (via 67 Hail Hail).

The lowdown

The Japanese defender is valued at £720,000 by Transfermarkt, but his contract is up at the end of January, so Celtic appear to be lining up a free transfer.

The 24-year-old has made 36 appearances this season, scoring six goals and providing three assists. He’s notably versatile, having operated as a central midfielder, attacking midfielder, left winger and right winger in addition to his preferred position.

Hatate was part of the Japan squad which competed at the summer’s Tokyo Olympics, helping them to achieve a fourth-place finish.

The latest

McGowan wrote in Saturday’s edition of The Scottish Daily Mail (via 67 Hail Hail) that a deal between Celtic and Hatate is at an advanced stage.

The 24-year-old looks poised to become the Hoops’ first January 2022 addition and apparently he has already told his team-mates that he’s bound for Celtic Park.

The verdict

Clearly, Ange Postecoglou and Celtic are trying to build upon their successful swoop for another J-League star in the form of Kyogo Furuhashi – coming into this weekend, the 26-year-old is the joint-top scorer in the Premiership with seven goals.

Hatate may not be their only January addition from The Land of the Rising Sun either, with Yokohama F Marinos attacker Daizen Maeda also heavily linked with a switch to Parkhead.

If the Japan defender does arrive, you’d imagine that he’d compete with Greg Taylor and Boli Bolingoli for starting opportunities, boosting the depth of the squad in a position where Celtic have had their issues this season.

Klazinga and van Schoor put Namibia ahead

The third day belonged to Namibia after UAE’s batting lost their way following a solid start to give away a 72-run first-innings lead

Cricinfo staff07-Dec-2009
ScorecardThe third day belonged to Namibia after UAE’s batting lost their way following a solid start to give away a 72-run first-innings lead. Namibia opener Raymond van Schoor then put the game further in Namibia’s favour with a patient 87, which increased the lead to 206 by stumps.UAE started the day at a solid 185 for 3, and the overnight pair of Arfan Haider and Abdul Rehman progressed steadily to 238. Haider had moved to 84 when he was dismissed, sparking a collapse from the lower order – the final seven wickets going down for 59 runs. Medium-pacer Louis Klazinga was the architect of UAE’s downfall; he grabbed a wicket in each of his five overs, starting from the 85th.It was van Schoor’s turn then to press the advantage. He hit five fours and a six in his fifth career half-century to take the lead beyond 200. He was in sight of a century when he fell to left-arm spinner Fayyaz Ahmed with less than three overs to go for stumps.

Yarmolenko to be axed in West Ham shake up

It’s hard to find faults within the current West Ham side as they continue to impress and exceed expectations in the Premier League this season, sitting third in the table currently.

However, we do expect David Moyes to be looking to add quality and consistency to his already high functioning side, as he will be keen to keep up with the top four quality of Liverpool and Manchester City, to hopefully achieve a Champions League spot at the end of the season.

That said, Andriy Yarmolenko, who was once dubbed as “special” by his teammate, Declan Rice, has embarked on a poor run form as of late that could easily see the £100k-p/w player benched or worse, axed and moved on completely from the London club, especially if Moyes does well in the January transfer window.

Jesse Lingard is strongly connected with a move back to West Ham in a permanent deal, which will likely push Yarmolenko out of the team, depending on how Moyes decides to use the Manchester United midfielder’s versatility in the attacking third, should he re-join the side in the next few months.

They may receive a helping hand in landing that deal by shifting their offensive dud on in the next few months, a move that could potentially save the club millions when it comes to expending the cash received, rather than having to dig deeper into their current war chest instead.

Yarmolenko’s biggest problem at West Ham is his bad run of injuries which has seen the winger become an unreliable member of the squad. In fact, the Ukrainian has had seven separate incidents of injury or illness over the last three seasons with the East London club, and as a result, has ultimately become a liability for the side.

Moyes could capitalise on an opportunity to sell the winger back to Dynamo Kiev in January or the summer, as their president, Ihor Surkis spoke out to confirm the interest of bringing the player back to his home club, on NV Sport;

“There is no such agreement, but it depends on both parties. If Andriy has a desire, I will gladly give him the opportunity to end his career at his home club. I have great respect for what he did for Dynamo, and I consider him a very decent man.”

West Ham will be hoping to continue their run of fantastic form as the Premier League returns this weekend, as the Hammers travel to the Molineux on Saturday afternoon. Unfortunately for Yarmolenko, he will probably play a minimal role for that game and beyond.

Newcastle in talks with Unai Emery

A development has emerged regarding Newcastle’s pursuit of Villarreal manager Unai Emery.

What’s the talk?

According to Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie, the Magpies are attempting to bring in the Spaniard ahead of the clash with Brighton in the Premier League on Saturday, claiming that there is a feeling the 49-year-old has unfinished business in England.

He wrote: “Unai Emery is under serious consideration for the Newcastle United vacancy. There is a feeling the 49-year-old has unfinished business in the Premier League since being sacked by Arsenal in 2019. Newcastle hoping to have a new boss in place by Brighton match on Saturday #NUFC”

Fans will be delighted

Newcastle fans will surely be delighted with this news as it appears as though the club are finally closing in on a replacement for Steve Bruce. Graeme Jones has been the caretaker manager for two Premier League games and it has left the team in limbo as they await their new head coach.

Bringing in Emery will put an end to the constant speculation regarding the vacant position and will allow fans to start concentrating on what is happening on the pitch rather than worrying about who is in the dugout. It may also provide some clarity off the field, which could lead to more cohesive performances on it as the manager imparts his wisdom on the players and organises them in the way that he wants.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/check-out-the-latest-newcastle-pif-news-martinez-ward-prowse” title= “Read the latest Newcastle news!”]

Appointing him ahead of the Brighton match could also add to the supporters’ delight as it means that they will not have to endure the two-week international break before seeing a fresh head coach in the dugout. It puts the building blocks in place ahead of the January transfer window, with the club now able to identify targets with the help of Emery.

Fans will also be delighted as he is a coach with an excellent pedigree. He finished fifth and led Arsenal to the Europa League final in his first season in England, before being sacked after 13 league matches of the following campaign. Emery has won the Europa League four times in his career, three times with Sevilla and once with Villarreal, and Newcastle supporters could love to see a trophy-winning coach arrive at St. James’ Park, where major silverware has been conspicuous by its absence since 1969.

Man Utd fans blast Fernandes vs Man City

Lots of Manchester United fans have been blasting the performance of Bruno Fernandes in their 2-0 loss at home to Manchester City on Saturday.

The former Sporting Lisbon maestro was not his usual self on the pitch and could be blamed for the first goal the Red Devils conceded as he failed to show enough effort to stop the cross which led to Eric Bailly heading the ball into his own net.

Fernandes lost out on five of his duels and failed to record a single shot on target, dribble, key pass or accurate cross in the game, while he also lost possession of the ball on 13 different occasions, the most out of any of his teammates (SofaScore).

At least he will be able to have a break with Portugal over the next fortnight before he gets back to playing for United, for whom he will hope to rediscover his best form.

Man Utd fans on Fernandes’ display

These Red Devils fans blasted Fernandes’ performance on Twitter, with one MUFC supporter even going as far as to claim that the 27-year-old was ‘shocking’ in the derby:

New Zealand suffer warm-up defeat

A round-up of the first day of warm-up matches in the ICC Champions Trophy

Cricinfo staff18-Sep-2009New Zealand’s Champions Trophy campaign got off to a poor start in Pretoria, where they lost their opening warm-up game by two wickets to the Warriors. After suffering consecutive defeats against Sri Lanka and India in the Compaq Cup due to batting failures, New Zealand’s captain Daniel Vettori had stressed the need for partnerships. They managed one worth 95 for the second wicket between Martin Guptill and Ross Taylor, with both scoring half-centuries, but the rest of the batsmen failed to build on a solid platform – New Zealand were 173 for 2 at one stage. They lost six wickets for 10 runs during a startling lower-order collapse and were dismissed for 237 in the 47th over. The Warriors’ opening bowler, Juan Theron, caused most of the damage, taking 5 for 42 in 8.1 overs. The Warriors chase also suffered from the lack of substantial partnerships but all their batsmen chipped in with useful contributions. Their top eight reached double figures with wicketkeeper Davey Jacobs leading the way with 54. While the required run-rate never got out of hand, the regular fall of wickets – Ian Butler took 4 for 53 and Daryl Tuffey claimed 3 for 49 – brought the match to a close finish. The eighth wicket fell with the Warriors needing 24 runs to win but Theron came to the rescue with 21 off 19 balls to ensure victory in the penultimate over.Kamran Akmal hit 82 off 78 balls and Naved-ul-Hasan took 5 for 41 as Pakistan eased to a 108-run victory against Sri Lanka in Benoni. Pakistan were initially in trouble, slipping to 64 or 3, after the experienced pair of Younis Khan and Mohammad Yousuf failed to get going. Opener Kamran revived Pakistan by continuing to score at a brisk pace, and they went on to a massive score after Misbah-ul-Haq and highly rated youngster Umar Akmal made half-centuries.Mahela Jayawardene had called on the top order to fire last week, but it flopped in the face of a daunting target of 307. The biggest contribution from the top five was captain Kumar Sangakkara’s 21, which meant Sri Lanka were struggling at 83 for 5 by the 23rd over. Chamara Kapugedera and Angelo Mathews resisted with a 102-run stand but could only bring some respectability to the margin of defeat as they couldn’t keep up with the spiralling asking-rate.South Africa laid down an early marker as they piled up 388 for 4 against West Indies at Potchefstroom. Graeme Smith, Jacques Kallis and JP Duminy all reached the 80s, while Roelef van der Merwe took four wickets. Duminy was the stand-out batsman with 80 off 49 deliveries and two of his five sixes required replacement balls. Mark Boucher also gave a reminder of his big-hitting skills by smashing 55 off 27 balls, adding 116 off 55 deliveries with Duminy.West Indies’ openers made a spirited start, putting on 80 runs by the 13th over. However the middle order caved in – with the exception of Darren Sammy who made a fighting half-century – and West Indies limped to 200 before being bowled out.The only blot on South Africa’s day was an abdominal strain to Herschelle Gibbs when he took evasive action to avoid a straight drive from Smith. Gibbs retired hurt and will have a scan to determine the extent of the injury.

Bloomfield ride on high on Randiv heroics

A round-up of the fourth round of matches in Tiers A and B of Sri Lanka’s Premier League Tournament

Sa'adi Thawfeeq28-Oct-2009Tier AFor the second successive week, a spinner took nine wickets in an innings and 13 wickets in a match. However on this occasion, offspinner Suraj Randiv’s effort handed Bloomfield Cricket and Athletic Club a win by five wickets against Sri Lanka Army Sports Club at Reid Avenue, unlike Sohan Boralessa’s effort, which failed to produce a similar result for Colombo Cricket Club against Moors Sports Club in the last round.Randiv’s achievement was more creditable because he backed up the excellent bowling performance with a maiden first-class century that enabled Bloomfield to win after conceding a first-innings lead. The victory kept Bloomfield in contention for top spot, with table-leaders Nondescripts Cricket Club ahead by just four points.Army caused a wave of panic when they surprisingly took a first-innings lead. With the exception of Randiv’s 172-ball century, the Bloomfield batting collapsed dismally to be bowled out for 216 in reply to Army’s first-innings total of 251. However, Randiv’s magnificent bowling effort saw Army collapse for 231, leaving Bloomfield 267 for victory. Randiv, who ended with figures of 9 for 109 off 35.2 overs was deprived of a perfect 10 in the innings, when one of the batsmen was run out. Even during the chase, Bloomfield had to rely on Randiv’s batting talent to see them through, as they lost half the side for 154. Only an unbroken sixth-wicket partnership of 113 between Chamara Silva and Randiv saw them reach their target in 36 overs.A dejected Army coach Simon Hewawitharana said: “It was our game and we threw it away, trying to play for a draw. It was our own mistakes that contributed to our defeat and gave Randiv so many wickets. He bowled to a 7-3 leg side field and our batsmen had no difficulty playing him but they were nervous.”Defending champs Colts Cricket Club were jolted by table toppers Nondescripts Cricket Club who defeated them by six wickets at Havelock Park. In a low-scoring game, Colts were bundled out for 170 and 224 by right-arm fast bowler Kosala Kulasekara, who picked up a career-best match haul of 7 for 115. Left-arm spinner Chanaka Komasaru also contributed with a five-for in the second innings. Nondescripts, in turn, did not make much headway, being dismissed for 200 in the first innings. Chasing 195 for victory, they made a horror start with opener Upul Tharanga caught and bowled by Chaminda Vaas for a first-ball duck. Nondescripts stumbled to 15 for 3 and then to 81 for 4, before Farveez Maharoof took them home with a career-best of 115 not out, only his second hundred in a first-class career spanning eight years.”Maharoof’s effort was vital for us at a point when we had lost three early wickets but if you take the whole match in perspective it was due to the contributions of all the team members that enabled us to win,” said Nondescripts coach Hemantha Devapriya. “It was a major achievement to have a team like Colts bundled out for 170 in the first innings. Kosala’s four early wickets helped us immensely.”Former champions Sinhalese Sports Club (SSC) kept up the pressure on the top two by outclassing Moors Sports Club by an innings and 83 runs at Maitland Place. Kaushal Silva and Thilina Kandamby celebrated their selection for the India tour with notable contributions that helped SSC pile up a massive 466 for 7, which forced Moors to follow on. Silva impressed with 75 off 100 balls and Kandamby scored 102 off 153 balls after Sri Lanka Test opener Tharanga Paranavithana and Hans Fernando had laid the platform with a 143-run partnership for the second wicket. The Moors batsmen collapsed twice to the spin of Sachithra Senanayake and Kaushal Lokuarachchi, who shared 14 wickets between them.A career-best bowling performance by offspinner Asanka Silva saw Badureliya Sports Club record their second win of the season, beating Saracens Sports Club by nine wickets at the Panadura Esplanade. Silva followed his four wickets in the first innings with a brilliant bowling performance in the second, capturing 7 for 73, as Saracens were dismissed for 200 and 187. Ranesh Perera’s maiden first-class century gave Badureliya a handy 166-run first-innings lead that left them with 22 runs to get for victory.Colombo Cricket Club (CCC) continued their wretched form this season, suffering a crushing ten-wicket loss to Chilaw Marians Cricket Club at Maitland Crescent. CCC put up a pathetic batting display to be bowled out for a 167 after choosing to bat. From that point, it was the Marians who had the game under their control. They made use of a good batting track to pile up 403 for 7, and CCC barely managed to avoid the ignominy of an innings defeat when they left Marians with 10 runs to get for the win. Left-hander Milinda Siriwardene’s career-best 151 not out and his partnership of 157 for the sixth wicket with Janaka Gunaratne (88) knocked the wind out of the CCC sails.Former Sri Lanka Under-19 cricketer Lahiru Thirimanne’s second first-class hundred of his career ensured Ragama Cricket Club gained vital first-innings points over Tamil Union Cricket and Athletic Club in a high-scoring drawn match played at Maitland Place.

Left a gettable target of 239, Sebastianites folded tamely for 137. The batsmen displayed their inability to play spin falling to left-armer Gayan Sirisoma (11 for 123 in the match) and offspinner Thamara Abeyratne (7 for 82).Panadura Sports Club’s chances of reducing the gap were thwarted by Burgher Recreation Club who held them to a draw at the Burgher Recreation Club, after Panadura barely managed to scrape through to a narrow three-run lead in the first innings. Neither team benefited greatly by the result and it only allowed Lankan Cricket Club to pull ahead. Sri Lanka Navy Sports Club and Singha Sports Club secured their first wins of the season defeating Moratuwa SC and Air Force Sports Club respectively.

Like Tillakaratne Dilshan before him, a change of name for Suraj Randiv has brought success to his wavering cricket career, which has seen him hopping clubs in search of an opportunity to represent his country. Bloomfield, the club that Dilshan also represents, is Randiv’s fourth in a first-class career spanning five years. He started off at Matara Sports Club and then went to Nondescripts Cricket Club and Sinhalese Sports Club. While Dilshan changed his original name from Tuan Mohamed Dilshan to Tillakaratne Mudiyansilage Dilshan, Randiv changed his original name from Suraj Mohamed to Hewa Kaluhalamullage Suraj Randiv Kaluhalamulla last year. The move has had its effect.Dilshan, promoted from a middle-order batsman to opener, is currently enjoying great success with the national team in all forms of the game. Likewise, Randiv has emerged as the leading wicket-taker in the Premier League this season with 29 first-class wickets at 18.89. The performances have not gone unnoticed by the Sri Lankan selectors, because he was named as a standby for the Test squad for next month’s tour to India.Bloomfield owe their current No. 2 position on the points table to Randiv, who not only excelled with his bowling but also contributed lavishly with the bat, scoring his maiden first-class century in last week’s match against Sri Lanka Army Sports Club. Perhaps the presence of Muttiah Muralitharan has kept him from breaking into the national side, but an injury to Muralitharan before the Galle Test against Pakistan early this year, earned Randiv a call-up.

Harmison and Panesar await their fate

Steve Harmison has caused England’s selectors the most timely of headaches ahead of Sunday’s first Test squad announcement

Andrew Miller04-Jul-2009Steve Harmison added the wicket of Ricky Ponting yesterday, along with Phillip Hughes for the second time in the match•Getty ImagesThe speed with which England vacated the field at Edgbaston on Friday afternoon revealed plenty about their mindset in the lead-in to next week’s first Test in Cardiff. The time was 5pm on a perfect summer’s afternoon, and the opportunity was there for at least another hour and a half of fine-tuning. However, it was not deemed necessary by England’s think tank, who have seen enough already, and just want to get the proper action underway now.On Sunday, that action will come one step closer to fruition when the national selector, Geoff Miller, unveils England’s trimmed-down squad for Wednesday’s massively anticipated Ashes opener. That Miller has spent the week in the stands at Worcester, watching the Lions – and more pertinently, Steve Harmison – rather than fussing about the form of, say, Monty Panesar, suggests that 11 of the expected 13 names on his list will be fairly easy to second-guess.All the permutations, therefore, come down to the selection of two men: the squad’s spare batsman, and of course, the extra seamer, a man who remains highly likely to complement the chosen triumvirate of James Anderson, Stuart Broad and Andrew Flintoff, given that Cardiff’s reputation as a raging turner has resulted in a mere 17 wickets for spinners, out of a possible 120, in three Championship matches this season. Regardless of his three morale-boosting wickets at Edgbaston on Thursday, Panesar’s own figures for Northamptonshire last month were 2 for 149.The fact that England have yet to finalise their squad was telegraphed by the sight of Miller’s fellow selectors, James Whitaker and Ashley Giles, joining him on the balcony at Worcester for the final day of the Lions match. As fate would have it, the England captain, Andrew Strauss, arrived at the ground just as Harmison and Graham Onions were about to take the new ball in Australia’s second innings. That pair, plus the injury-prone but highly rated Ryan Sidebottom, are the front-runners for that final berth, and their fates will be revealed in an announcement at Old Trafford at 10am on Sunday. If the heart says Harmison, after the fury of his performance against the Australians this week, the head suggests that Onions will be permitted to continue in the role in which he excelled, in albeit subdued circumstances, against West Indies earlier in the year. Having claimed five wickets on debut at Lord’s, including four in seven balls, Onions impressed with his versatility in the second Test at Chester-le-Street, where at various stages of the match he found swing, bounce and aggression to meet his team’s requirements.Continuity calls for Onions’ inclusion, even if Harmison is the last man that the Aussies would wish to line up against right now. Besides, the impression gleaned from the winter campaign in the Caribbean is that Harmison still has a lot of ground to make up with the management – not least the hard-bitten new coach, Andy Flower – after a lacklustre series of performances. His inclusion would be expedient in the circumstances, but having gone to such lengths to arrange that squad bonding exercise in Flanders last week, it would be peculiar if England went fishing outside their initial squad of 16 at this crucial stage of the series. What is more, it is arguable that Harmison may already have done his job for this summer. In 2005, his furious five-wicket onslaught on the first morning at Lord’s was the performance that spelt out to the Aussies the extent of the challenge that awaited them. If truth be told, he was rarely as effective thereafter – he made vital incisions, most notably the dismissals of Michael Clarke and Mike Kasprowicz at Edgbaston, but claimed just nine wickets at 50.22 in the remaining four Tests of the series. What Harmison has done, however, is put on the sort of welcoming committee that Australian sides have habitually laid on for English touring teams. His unbridled hostility with the ball has been coupled with a selection of choice barbs that reveal an astonishing appetite for a tussle from a man who came across so meekly in Australia three years ago. It hasn’t quite been like watching the long-retired Dennis Lillee and Jeff Thomson chopping England down to size in regular tour openers at Lilac Hill, but it’s not far removed.Even Harmison himself does not expect to feature at Cardiff, but the lurking menace of his Worcester performance is quite enough national service for now – in particular, the manner in which he has dissected the technique of Australia’s wunderkind opener, Phillip Hughes. “I have put loads of doubt in him [Hughes],” said Harmison. “I imagine I’ve put doubt in a lot of the batsmen’s minds.”As for the 13th man in the squad, Michael Vaughan’s retirement has cleared the clutter quite nicely as far as the selectors are concerned. Regardless of his first-ball duck for the Lions, Ian Bell’s class is such that he’s unlikely to be shunned at this stage of the series, even if his temperament has yet to convince everyone. Including, quite possibly, the man himself.Possible Test squad Andrew Strauss (capt), Alastair Cook, Ravi Bopara, Kevin Pietersen, Paul Collingwood, Ian Bell, Matt Prior (wk), Andrew Flintoff, Stuart Broad, Graeme Swann, James Anderson, Graham Onions, Monty Panesar.
