Fairlie Dalpathado dies aged 85

Fairlie Dalpathado, a successful allrounder for St Joseph’s College and Ceylon, as it was then known, has died at the age of 85 at his residence in Kirillapone

Sa'adi Thawfeeq09-Jan-2010Fairlie Dalpathado, a successful allrounder for St Joseph’s College and Ceylon, as it was then known, has died at the age of 85 at his residence in Kirillapone. He was buried according to his wishes within 24 hours by his family. As a player, Dalpathado excelled for his alma mater and later for Sinhalese Sports Club and then All-Ceylon (as Sri Lanka was then known as). He dominated in a post-war era where cricketers of his caliber were hard to come by. Dalpathado is best remembered for leading the unbeaten St Joseph’s side against a Combined Schools team led by Vernon Prins of St Thomas’, which included eight captains and nine centurions, in 1943. In this historic encounter Dalpathado contributed 59 with the bat and then bundled out the strong Combined Schools side for a mere 35, capturing 6 for 17 with his right-arm fast-medium deliveries. However, the organizers refused permission for St Joseph’s to enforce the follow-on fearing an early finish to the match before the chief guest Governor of Ceylon Sir Jeffery Layton arrived.Dalpathado moved to SSC to display his all-round skills and in 1949 made his debut for Ceylon under the captaincy of Derrick de Saram against a West Indian side led by John Goddard. He also represented his country under the leadership of Malcolm Spittel against Freddie Brown’s Englishmen and toured Pakistan with the Ceylon team led by Sargo Jayawickrama in the 1950s. He was at the time regarded as the leading allrounder in Sri Lanka.Even at the age of 60 he showed that he had not lost any of his touch as a bowler when he took eight wickets for Chilaw Marians (he was born in Chilaw) against Wattala Antonians in a division III cricket match. Dalpathado turned to coaching to pass on his valuable experience to future St Joseph’s players. He coached his school on three different occasions – in 1949 for a year, from 1965-73 and from 1975-88. During his 20-year tenure as coach, Dalapathado produced four champion sides and five outstanding captains in Rohan Weerakkody, Ashley de Silva, Nirmalal Perera, Jeevaka Candappa and Jonathan Alles.Dalpathado also excelled at tennis taught him by his father. He worked at the Tea Control Department and retired at Tea Small Holdings as assistant manager. He is survived by his Indian-born wife Therese Abraham whom he met during one of his tennis tournaments to India and son and two daughters.

West Ham fans are delighted as Manuel Lanzini returns to training

[ad_pod ]

West Ham fans have taken to Twitter in jubilant fashion after it was revealed that Manuel Lanzini would be returning to training, following a seven-month injury lay off after suffering a knee injury with Argentina in the build up to the World Cup, as reported by the club’s official website.

The diminutive No.10 is one of, if not the most, important players at the London Stadium, and his creativity and ingenuity in the centre-attacking midfield role is a huge feature of the Hammers’ attacking play.

In the 2017/18 season, before his untimely knee injury, the 25-year-old hit five goals and recorded six assists in 23 Premier League starts (as per Whoscored),  and has become a fans’ favourite since arriving on an initial loan deal from Al Jazira back in 2015 (as per the BBC).

Who should replace Marko Arnautovic if he leaves West Ham? FFC’s James Jones has the answer! Check out the video below to find out…

The east Londoners have since signed Felipe Anderson to provide some creativity in Lanzini’s absence, so when the pair of them are fit and available to take to the field together, the London Stadium will be undoubtedly drooling to watch them strut their stuff alongside each other.

Amongst all the doom and gloom of the Marko Arnautovic transfer saga that has dominated the club this month (as per Sky Sports), news of the Argentina international’s return has put smiles back on West Ham fans’ faces at least…

West Ham could lodge Sule bid

According to reliable club insider ExWHUemployee, via the West Ham Way website, an exciting transfer update has emerged involving Bayern Munich star Niklas Sule.

The Lowdown: West Ham eyeing emergency defenders…

Since both Angelo Ogbonna and Kurt Zouma have been sidelined due to injury, manager David Moyes has made the signing of an emergency centre-half one of his top priorities for the January transfer window (The Daily Mail).

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-updates/” title=”West Ham latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Links to Burnley’s James Tarkowski, Liverpool’s Nathaniel Phillips and Manchester City’s Nathan Ake have been prevalent over these last few weeks with the trio thought to be on recruitment chief Rob Newman’s radar (The Evening Standard).

However, that hasn’t stopped links to other central defensive additions, with Irons transfer source ExWHUemployee sharing news on a new name West Ham could now swoop for.

The Latest: Ex makes exciting Sule claim…

According to Ex, it is believed that Moyes and Newman now want Germany international centre-back Sule with West Ham holding a ‘firm interest’.

The insider also says, at this stage, it is ‘likely’ West Ham could ‘make a bid’ to sign the 26-year-old with his contract currently set to expire at the Allianz Arena in 2022.

The Verdict: Big move…

Sule, amassing 37 international caps and becoming a consistent performer for Bayern at club level, would undoubtedly be a terrific signing for West Ham and Moyes.

While Julian Nagelsmann has only started him 10 times out of Bayern’s 17 Bundesliga matches, Sule has arguably proved to be one of their best players in the Champions League this season.

Over his four European outings, the towering 6 foot 5 powerhouse has averaged a higher pass accuracy (94.5%) than any Bayern player with more than one start, with Sule also averaging more clearances per 90 (2.5) than anyone in their squad over the competition thus far (WhoScored).

Lauded as ‘unbelievable’ by Nagelsmann (Bundesliga), West Ham would do well to land an accomplished central defender who can also even operate as an emergency full-back.

Valued at £31.5 million by Transfermarkt, Moyes and co may feasibly be able to negotiate a lower price tag given Sule’s contract situation and the fact he could leave on a free in the summer.

Taking all of this into account, we would urge the club to prioritise a move for the decorated star.

Sri Lanka seek to avoid early exit

With Afghanistan, Ireland and Bangladesh unable to produce an upset in their opening World Twenty20 matches it is now down to Zimbabwe to shake up the established order

Andrew McGlashan in Providence02-May-2010With Afghanistan, Ireland and Bangladesh unable to produce an upset in their opening World Twenty20 matches it is now down to Zimbabwe to shake up the established order. And if they do Sri Lanka, one of the favourites for the title and last year’s finalists, will be on an early plane home or trying to find somewhere to hang around before the series against New Zealand in Florida. The idea of Zimbabwe beating Sri Lanka isn’t as outlandish as it may sound. They have laid their maker during the warm-up matches with victories over Australia and Pakistan to reinforce the feeling that their game is on an upward curve, even if that graph does remain on a gentle gradient. Coupled with that there is the pressure on Sri Lanka, who know it’s win or bust for them. They were in a very different situation last year when they moved to the final unbeaten, and the defeat against New Zealand was clearly tough to stomach for Kumar Sangakkara. There were a number of stages when they were taking control in the opening match; as Mahela Jayawardene and debutant Dinesh Chandimal were adding 69 for third wicket, when Muttiah Muralitharan and Sanath Jayasuriya struck in quick succession and when Jacob Oram was bowled. But unlike the side in England they just couldn’t quite find that way to win. Lasith Malinga was unable to defend 10 off the last over as his length, for once, deserted him, and the lack of momentum at the start of their batting effort proved costly. One innings does not change Tillakaratne Dilshan’s stats as one of the pre-eminent Twenty20 batsmen, but it continued his poor form from the IPL.”We were a bit slow in the first six overs, which put us under a lot of pressure,” Sangakkara said. “We probably lost a bit of momentum in the first six overs and that was vital to try and kick on and keep the momentum going.”Sri Lanka were one of the most active nations at the IPL with eight of this squad involved for various franchises. It can be a double-edged sword which was shown no more clearly than by the performances of Jayawardene and Dilshan against New Zealand. Jayawardene enjoyed a productive tournament and his form prompted a change in tactics from Sri Lanka who promoted him to open in place of Jayasuriya – someone who played in Twenty20 style before the game was invented. There was something incongruous seeing a Sri Lanka score of 135 for 6 with Jayasuriya nought not out without facing a ball having come in at No. 7, with youngsters Chandimal, Chamara Kapugedera and Angelo Mathews preferred ahead of him during the final overs. Jayasuriya is no spring chicken and was almost invisible during the IPL as he played just four matches for Mumbai Indians, but in this team he is being picked almost purely for his left-arm spin.Still, Sri Lanka have a team that should still be masters of this format especially with their depth of spin bowling on these slow West Indian surfaces. Jayasuriya and Muttiah Muralitharan were the pick against New Zealand, while Ajantha Mendis’ performance showed how quickly fortunes can change in Twenty20. When he removed Scott Styris he looked to have struck a match-winning blow, but Oram put the next two balls over the rope and it was game on again. There is a thought that batsmen are starting to work out Mendis after the astonishing start he made to international cricket. Like Jayasuriya he was barely used in the IPL – just two matches for Kolkata – and he does appear to have lost a little of that zip which made him so lethal. Coupled with Dilshan’s struggles it means Sri Lanka’s two x-factor players are not the force they were last year. They should still beat Zimbabwe, but will need their flamboyance to progress further. The tournament will be worse off if Sri Lanka aren’t in the Super Eights, but first they must earn the right to be there.

Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney are out for revenge! Midfielder Ryan Barnett admits Wrexham looking to 'get one over' on Accrington Stanley following 'heavy' celebrations back in November

Wrexham beaten by Accrington last time out'Heavy' celebrations didn't go unnoticedBarnett eyes victory this weekendGOALWHAT HAPPENED?

Accrington secured a 2-0 win over Wrexham back in November and wildly celebrated the victory at Crown Ground. Now, wing-back Barnett, who missed that game due to a knee injury, wants to settle a score when they meet at the Racecourse on Saturday.

He told Welsh publication, The Leader: "I was injured for that game but the lads said Accrington celebrated quite heavy after that win. It's not something that you take personally. When we win games, we celebrate so you have got to take it both ways. It would be nice to get one over on them so bring it on. That's what you get when you play for this club, everyone wants to beat us. Since I have been here, we have almost used it as a challenge. We know every team is going to give 110 per cent because they want to beat Wrexham but we will be ready for it."

This fixture has a little bit of niggle between the two sides as a war or words took place in the reverse fixture over Accrington's ticket prices. That, the "heavy" celebrations, and the fact that Wrexham could go back into the automatic promotion spots if results go their way is plenty motivation for the Red Dragons.

Trott found to have broken finger

Jonathan Trott has been ruled out of action for three to four weeks meaning he will miss the end of the English domestic season, after scans revealed a fracture to his right hand

ESPNcricinfo staff05-Sep-2012Jonathan Trott has been ruled out of action for three to four weeks meaning he will miss the end of the English domestic season, after scans revealed a fracture to his right hand, but is expected to be fit for the start of the tour to India.Trott took a blow from Dale Steyn during the fourth ODI against South Africa at Lord’s on Sunday and although initial x-rays did not reveal serious damage further investigation has found an undisplaced fracture on his middle finger. It means Trott will be unavailable for the CB40 final against Hampshire at Lord’s and the final round of Championship matches, although Warwickshire are on the brink of securing the four-day title with a game to spare. An ECB statement said: “Although initial X-rays were clear, a subsequent MRI scan revealed a fracture at the base of his third metacarpal. No intervention is required and the 31-year-old should be able to resume batting in 3-4 weeks and is expected to available for the tour of India next month.”Jonny Bairstow took Trott’s place for the final one-day international against South Africa at Trent Bridge and Ravi Bopara moved up to No. 3 but fell for a second ball duck to Dale Steyn.England are expected to name their Test squad for India next week before the start of the World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka. There are a number of issues to resolve, not least whether Kevin Pietersen will be available but also the likely absence of Ian Bell for the Mumbai Test as his wife is due to give birth.

New Zealand knock over Australia again

New Zealand took their winning streak over Australia to five with a 17-run success in the second Twenty20 in Christchurch

ScorecardAmy Satterthwaite’s 42 saved New Zealand as they recorded another important win•Getty ImagesNew Zealand took their winning streak over Australia to five with a 17-run success in the second Twenty20 in Christchurch. The visitors had a chance to end their drought when they held the hosts to 115 for 9, but they were unable to break free in their reply and were dismissed on the final ball for 98.Australia were a worrying 35 for 3, with Alex Blackwell and Lisa Sthalekar already gone, before Shelley Nitschke and Jess Cameron (16) combined. After Cameron was unfortunate to be lbw trying to sweep Kate Broadmore, Nitschke lifted the pace with a couple of strong boundaries to fine leg and straight down the ground, but they still needed 39 off four overs. The asking rate was too high and Ellyse Perry (6) holed out at long off, giving Sara McGlashan the first of two good catches. Her running take at long-on took care of Nitschke for 45 off 51, ending Australia’s charge, but McGlashan wasn’t finished and her long throw helped run out Rene Farrell. Suzie Bates got 3 for 24, including the final-ball stumping of Julie Hunter, but all the bowlers had kept the pressure on.Amy Satterthwaite, the Player of the Match, revived New Zealand after Perry crashed through the first three batsmen in the opening three overs. Perry was on a hat-trick after having Aimee Watkins lbw from the fourth ball of the day and picked up Maria Fahey to have the hosts 5 for 3 with Blackwell’s sharp catch in the gully.Satterthwaite arrived to save her side and put on 45 with McGlashan (16), who was dropped a couple of times, and was the eighth to fall after collecting 42 from 47 balls. A late push from Rachel Priest (14 off 9) took the team into three figures and gave them a match-winning total.Sthalekar picked up two wickets, including bowling Sophie Devine with a big off break, to support Perry’s 3 for 14. The teams’ next engagement is an ODI at Queenstown before the series concludes with two games in Invercargill.

'He looked like a Man City player' – Pep Guardiola 'will want Kobbie Mainoo in his midfield' after dazzling display at Everton, claims Man Utd legend Gary Neville

Gary Neville believes Pep Guardiola "will want" Kobbie Mainoo in his Manchester City midfield after the Manchester United star's display at Everton.

Neville praises Kobbie MainooClaimed Guardiola would want to sign himGot his first-ever Premier League start against EvertonWHAT HAPPENED?

The United legend was left impressed by Mainoo's performance against Everton as he played 72 minutes at Goodison Park. He also received praise from club captain Bruno Fernandes, who claimed on that the teenager should have received the Man of the Match award instead of Alejandro Garnacho.

Neville further suggested that by the first look at his style, Mainoo seems like a player who would fit in well at Manchester City and that Guardiola would love to have him in his midfield.

AdvertisementWHAT NEVILLE SAID

Speaking to , Neville said: "It was impressive and there’s no point getting carried away by it because the reality is he’s got 17 or 18 years in front of him and he’s got a lot of work to do. But sometimes when you see a player come in for the first time and the way in which the temperament, he’s obviously got technical ability and skill, you don’t play for Manchester United in the first place if you haven’t got that, you don’t get picked by Erik ten Hag if you haven’t got that, but what you don’t know is how they’re going to handle it.

"He’s gone in here at Goodison Park, in what could have been the most ferocious atmospheres for many a year in a hostile environment, and he looked class. We know he’s class, we know he’s got class, he’s got that ability, but he looked class in that environment. I always judge players when it’s the most difficult part of the game. When Manchester United had their most difficult period in that first half just before half time for 20 minutes I thought he was the only player who showed up, the only player who still looked like himself."

GettyTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Further complimenting the youngster, the former England international said: "The biggest compliment I can pay him, and it hurts to say this, I hope people can take this in the right spirit… he looked like a Manchester City player. Honestly, I was watching him and thinking, ‘that’s a player that Pep Guardiola will be looking at and thinking, ‘I want him in my midfield, that’s what my midfield players do’.

"Thankfully Man United have got him because he looks so composed, so graceful, always looking over his shoulder, knowing where everyone is, letting it run across his body. At 18 to be doing that out there, he’ll have tougher games, he’s got a long challenge in front of him, there’ll be injuries, ups and downs, there will be other players coming in, he’s playing at a club with huge demands. But that was very, very good."

From Beckham to Figo: The most shocking football signings of the 21st century

Goal counts down the transfers that have surprised over the years in the world's most popular sport

The appointment of college football coach Ted Lasso as Richmond FC's new manager might be one of the more bizarre signings in football, but the sport's history is littered with shock transfers – successful and infamous…

Getty20Ronaldinho – AC Milan to Flamengo

In 2011, Ronaldinho had a whole host of admirers when he was leaving AC Milan.

His transfer to Flamengo was not exactly a shock as he returned to his homeland, but the real head-scratching moment was the fact that Brazilian rivals Gremio were so sure they had they had re-signed their former player that they held a celebration with their fans before Flamengo came in and snatched him from under their eyes.

Andrea Pirlo was no stranger to a shocking switch, having first traded Inter for AC Milan and later joined Juventus on a free transfer, prompting Gianluigi Buffon to claim "God exists".

However, in 2020, he went one step further, taking over as coach of Juventus's Under-23 side without any coaching experience before being promoted to the top job just a week later following the sacking of Maurizio Sarri.

In 2012, former Ajax, Juventus and Netherlands legend Edgar Davids came out of retirement to play for his local London club.

But rather than a Premier League giant, the Champions League winner was appointed joint player-coach at… League Two side Barnet.

There, he wore the shirt number 1 and would not travel to away games if the team was required to stay in a hotel overnight.

Barnet were relegated but Davids stayed on and managed the team in the Conference. He left in 2014 and has not had a managerial job since.
